Hey flowti! Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad to see you coming back. Project Mishram is dope. I'm so glad to see that some people are enjoying them! I also enjoyed that Kankar album! Black metal is tough for these lists, just because there are so incredibly many black metal releases. I unfortunately can't include everything, lol. As for Bal Lada, my recommendation would be to watch the music videos & the 'making of the album' video. Then, also, approach it like a doom metal album, or a Wardruna album, rather than a black metal album. That background context and change of mindset might help you see it from a different angle. And if not, I mean, oh well! Not all music can be for everyone. I do genuinely believe bal Lada is a great album though, so I bet you'll at least come around to 'yeah, that's a cool album, not bad'.

Hey David! I always look forward to hearing from you. Lol, you've called me out on having not done my due diligence with Manntra. I didn't look into where they're from, I just heard the album and was like "That's clearly German production". However, it would seem that the Croatians have similar audio engineering practices. I wonder what the genre tag should be for Manntra. It's clearly a genre of Pop / Groove metal, and the majority of the artists in it are German. Memoriam is pretty much the bolt thrower after party, eh? There's always a need for some good clean riffing and decipherable lyrics in death metal. Man, I kind of forgot about Exanimis. It came out early in the month and I had forgotten about it by now. Certainly some incredibly fun symphonic death. I'm wondering if I should have given it more consideration for the spot I gave Ghosts of Atlantis. I had honestly kind of forgotten how much I enjoyed this one. Also totally missed Introspect, because it's labelled as an EP. I'm enjoying listening to that one right now. Post rocky with a touch of the djents lol. Midnight Odyssey - I think I gave this a listen, but I don't remember much about it. I'll make a note to revisit this one. They certainly know how to make some cover art though, and I'm always a sucker for black metal with some chant singing lol. Super madNES sounds quite fun. I was just super excited to see a new Azarath album because I loved their album from last year so much, lol.
lol, I know right? I kind of make a point to always discuss the genre and give a general description, as I feel like it's a good way to help people learn the metal subgenre jargon and whatnot. I figure it's helpful to just be like "here's a sound, and here's the word people use to describe it".
Polish, doomy, folky black metal? Varmia sounds quite juicy - definitely will check'em out. Otherwise, despite the usual ovehype I thought March was quite mediocre for metal . You seem to ignore the sludge royalty of Eyehategod but I'd give'em my #1 just for the novelty
Hey Count Deangeli, thanks for taking the time to comment! I felt that with both Dvne and Wolf King having had fantastic sludge adjacent albums, Eyehategod was a fair omission. In truth, I do these top lists because I feel they're really the best format for music discovery, and as such, I take somewhat of a bias towards more obscure artists. The music critics are around for helping sort out the riffraff and critiquing the work of well known artists, but I truly don't consider myself to be a music critic. As such, I felt it was much more important to put some newer and less established artists (though just as good!) on people's radar. When it comes to making the list, I always have like 12 albums in hand, and I'm like "Well, there's only going to be 1 sludge record". Usually there are a lot of solid releases in any genre, and so the choice of which to pick mostly comes down to who I want to give some recognition to, or who is being the most innovative and standing out from the pack.
The limiting factor is actually my ability to find them, not listen to them, lol. I don't necessarily listen to the entirety of every album. Once I decide an album won't be making it onto this list, I move on to the next one. On the flip side, some of the best albums get like 5 listens.
