CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Daisy (Julia Roberts) endures the snobbery of Charles's (Adam Storke) parents during an elegant dinner at their home.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Three teenagers learn a lot about life and love one summer in this romantic comedy-drama. Kat (Annabeth Gish), Daisy (Julia Roberts), and Jojo (Lili Taylor) are three working-class women just out of high school who have jobs at the same pizza parlor in the resort community of Mystic, Connecticut. Kat wants to study astronomy at Yale; when she starts baby-sitting for Tim (William R. Moses), a wealthy Yale graduate summering in Mystic, she finds herself falling in love with him, even though he's married and nearly twice her age. Daisy, who isn't sure what she wants from life, starts going with Charlie (Adam Storke), a recent law school dropout, though she starts to think that it may be more to rebel against her family than out of genuine affection. And Jojo is attracted to Bill (Vincent D'Onofrio), but she doesn't want to get married (she's already left him at the altar once); when Bill announces that he's no longer willing to have sex without marriage, she has to decide if his affections are worth a lifetime commitment. Conchata Ferrell appears in a supporting role as Leona, the proprietor of the pizza parlor, who zealously guards the secret formula of her sauce.

Small detail: Notice how Charlie gets up from the table and gets his own beer when he could have easily ordered one of the maids to do it. Small detail.... but it shows how humble and easy going Charlie is. You see that throughout the movie as he can relate to everybody very well regardless of whether they are rich or not.
One of the things that was so effective in this part is the fact that Daisy was overdressed compared to everybody else. Everybody else is dressed very nicely, but casual. Daisy looks like she is ready for a formal event, not a family dinner. It is a subtle, but effective way to show that Daisy is not part of their world.

This scene is the best in this film no doubt. I never thought of Daisy's clothing used in a subtle manner to illustrate how she isn't part of their world but I agree totally. I love reading comments and learning from others. Your comment is very accurate.

Well, technically he was 17 when they filmed it. The movie released just after his 18th birthday.
He was 17 and needed his mom present during filming. He won the role over Ben Affleck, only because he was 2 years older and could legally film at night (with a parent present).

Yeah, he was 17 at the time. He did an interview talking about this. He said he and Ben were the only ones auditioned for the role. He got it because he was older when the scene was required to shoot in the night.

What a shame the guy playing Charlie never amounted to much. He's handsome and talented. Aside from this the only other thing I've seen him in is Stephen King's The Stand miniseries. The 1994 version not the awful 2020 version.

I gotta say... Daisy really held herself up well in this situation. She was respectful and polite. She didn't show any anger, disdain, or insecurities. In fact I think Daisy was actually enjoying being in the company of Charlie's family. Daisy seemed genuinely intent on getting to know Charlie's family which to me shows that she genuinely loved and respected Charlie. She took their jokes in stride... and when Charlie's aunt made that insulting remark about "Portuguese being hard to train...." Daisy didn't flip out. She maintained her composure. Meeting Charlie's family was a really big deal to Daisy. She had intense confrontations with her mother and sister over it.
The thing that strikes me most about Daisy is that she really has a "heart" for her friends and family. She shows loyalty to those she loves, even though she can be wild and hot tempered sometimes.
I think Daisy sensed that the mother was more open-minded than the father.
It's actually prophetic of the dinner scene from Shrek 2: the father acts like King Harold, and the mother acts like Queen Lillian.

Yeah. Julia Roberts is what I would consider a REALLY pretty, good-looking "Girl Next Door" look. Like, for example, one of the best looking girls in a small town or mid-size city. I wouldn't consider her "model status" pretty though. BUT that's what makes Julia Roberts even more attractive is because she has the personality, charisma, energy, and LIFE to match her good looks EVEN though she is not model level pretty. Most female models are extremely good-looking but they lack personality, energy, and charisma. Julia Roberts has the entire package. She comes across as a woman you would really want to be around.
An uncredited Matt Damon here. I find it amusing/nice that he would later - years down the road after achieving fame - have a voice cameo in an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, "The Unblinking Eye" in Season 4, the spinoff which had Vincent D'Onofrio as its star, and who was also in this movie as Bill.

I didn't remember Matt Damon being in this. What is he about 14?....lol. Of course no one knew who he was in 1988. I love this movie and have always loved Lili Taylor. I always thought she was an under rated actress.

in later years I would see it for sale at like a Wal - Mart or a Target and it would have a different kind of cover on it and it made me irritated . The original cover had all 3 girls with their boyfriends sitting next to them on it . The new cover had Julia Robert's ( Daisy ) face blown up all big with Lily Taylor ( JoJo ) and Annabeth Gish ( Cat ) in the bottom left hand corner all small . I'm assuming they changed it to get peoples attention showing that Julia Roberts was in the movie ? Idk

There are a lot of misinformation in the movie but it is a wonderful movie indeed :) and we Portuguese in the 80's hardly even know what pizza was, it was not something we would ordinarily eat or cook :)
i think the implication is they were an example of a brown ethnic immigrant in new england who might work as waitresses at pizza shops or 'help' for the upper-class white WASPs who are historically speaking the rich people of that region
