The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!
I post videos every week on NBA history, predictions, hypothetical scenarios and current NBA topics.

Magic can play every position and it's a positionless era. He should thrive especially with all the interior space. Some of his defensive weaknesses become less pronounced tendency to get out of position to gamble on the steal's ability to contest 3's with his size. He's not a great outside shooter but it's better to get your best shooter open looks.

how can you even compare Magic and Steph. Even if they play the same position, their playstyles are completely different, as is the era they play in. Steph hasn`t done much to be worthy of the title "best point guard" even if that`s the position he plays. he has done everything to be the best shooter though. I don`t think he even passed Stockton as a "point guard", let alone Magic.

Magic flirted with 50/40/90 splits the first time he shot 3.5 3PA. Today he is definitely targeting splits like that more, and he would average closer to 25ppg for sure. That efficiency combined with his 6'9 frame, court vision and quickness, he'd make any team today a contender.
I don't think every player from the 80's and 90's magically improves today, but arguably Magic benefits the most from today's style of basketball. He has all day to go to work.

I never understood the weak Era thing. If you are an athlete in an Era where everyone's overall level is sub pat, and you are heads and shoulders above the rest. You should get even more credit from being so far above the norm. If you are from an Era where everyone is phenomenal or good, then it's not as special that you are great or good as well. These guys need more credit in being the first. Cause they didn't have many examples to build off of, they were the originators.

    • @AcousticOlli
      @AcousticOlli 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

but you need to be a lot better to even stand out in a highly skilled era. it`s much more difficult to be the GOAT today than it was in the 80s. That´s why so many people say Wilt is overrated because if he played in the 90s, he wouldn`t even be the leading scorer more than once probably.

    • @Despot-vd3rz
      @Despot-vd3rz 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@AcousticOlli Ok..OK... but you have to visualize this. So in this Era, the training regiments, nutrition, information is more advanced right? Plus they have the blue print to build on. So let's say you steph. You already have Reggie and ray.. let's say your lebron, you already had jordan and magic. So let's say you are Dr. Jay or Larry bird. You are paving the way to excellence. Doing things Noone else did. Think of the imagination you would have to have to be the first to double clutch, or reverse lay up. Or double cross over, etc. That's real greatness to me... so even if the next gens get better, you gotta respect the goats

Magic does not get credit for changing the game. I truly believe there is no such thing as players, his size handling the basketball and being trusted and groomed with guard skills if magic Johnson did not show how possible it was. With all of these point forwards and all of these people that are considered centers but are handling the ball with ease with guard skills. I believe that started with magic Johnson. Guys, his size was not meant to do the things he was able to do with the basketball. Now they're everywhere.

The fact this video needed to be made is a travesty. Everyone who watches basketball knows who Magic Johnson is and not only how good he was but how important he was to the NBA ensuring it became the global powerhouse it currently is.
Nephews today who's knowledge of NBA history begins in 2015 are real keen on propping up Curry as the greatest PG ever and apparently have never even seen a Magic highlight mixtape. Out in the wild a month or two ago I saw somebody say if Magic played today he'd be slightly better than Josh Giddey.

This is so cool :) Magic is amazing. As I mentioned in a comment in one of your other videos, I admire Magic. I'm glad to see a Magic Johnson compilation video.
I agree that Magic is a better PG. Like you, I acknowledge that it's possible that Steph could surpass him in the future. I admire Steph too, but Magic is better IMO for the same reasons that you listed. I do wonder what it would've been like if he was able to play longer. He was so talented at many aspects of the game. It's absolutely amazing how he made the NBA finals for 9 out of his 12 seasons and has 5 rings. I think that, at the very least, Steph would need to surpass Magic in accolades if he is to be the better point guard.
I love the video you made about Magic playing in the 92 All Star Game. Karl Malone's comments are so ignorant. But, I am glad that Magic had a lot of support also. His performance is absolutely amazing and it was a true joy to see his 3 pointers, assists, and defensive stops. Beautiful and moving video. Magic is one of the reasons why I love this game. "A Magical Farewell" is the perfect title.
It's incredible how Magic also scored so much while also having double digit assists. Great breakdown of the 87 Lakers. Seeing AC reminds me of how long his career was. I remember him from the Lakers three peat (2000-2002). Your video reminded me of how I learned about Cooper and Worthy. As a little kid, I went to a basketball class and the instructor talked about Worthy and Cooper and while it's been many years, I do vaguely remember him showing a video with them both. :) So, your video brought back some good memories. It was great getting to see them again and to learn more about them also through your video. Showtime was so fun and the 87 team is incredible. I need to read up more about NBA history, so I can't say whether they are the greatest, but I will say they are a legendary team.
It's sad that Magic got injured during the 1989 Finals. I can see why the 89 Finals result was s shock (especially given how dominant the Lakers were during the 89 playoffs). That definitely is one of the roughest endings for an NBA legend. It's a sweep, but I noticed how close each game was. No double digit wins.
I mentioned this earlier, but I concur that Magic was a superb scorer. He was so hard to stop. I'm still blown away by how he averaged 26 points AND 13 assists (and 8 boards) as a PG in the finals. His stats in the following playoffs is also incredible. I mean, I know that there are some players (i.e. Luka and Jokic today and Bird then - and to be clear, they're all great players) who do also average lots of points (20-30+) and assists, but Magic's stats and skills blow me away.
The 80s had a lot of great teams (esp. in the East but definitely also in the West). I do wonder how the Rockets would've done if Ralph Sampson was able to play longer/didn't have significant injuries. I don't hear Alex English mentioned much today, but I appreciate how you talked about him too. I learned a bit about him before and also through your videos.
The info about the Nuggets being incredible at offense but terrible at defense reminded me of the game they had against the Pistons where the score was 186-184, if I recall correctly. Thinking about that and the previous point of the Nuggets' poor defense reminds me of the Kings. To be clear, the 80s Nuggets team is much better, but the Kings do share one similarity in their 2022-2023 season - great offense and awful defense (plus also one of the highest scoring games ever with the Kings-Clippers game last season).
Eaton was great too. Eaton was intimidating. Like English, I don't hear him mentioned much either, so it was great hearing about him here too.
I knew Perkins more from his years in the Pacers and Schrempf from his Sonics years, but it was great getting to learn more about his time on the Mavs (and to learn more about the Mavs also).
I didn't know much about Chambers before, so it was great getting to learn more about him too.
Awesome video, Jonny! Hope you had a good Saturday :).

As a Bird fan growing up, I didn't fear anything for Boston EXCEPT that 'SHOWTIME' fast break--a simple defensive play or even after a made FG, they were off and running, and tall and athletic, and fast--and they would put 3 or 4 or 5 of them together finishing with alley-oop or 3-pointer, the 'coop-a-loop', the high fiving, butt-slapping, and eventually a needed Boston time-out. They would score 12 points in 1 minute. Boston fans feared this stuff from LA. It would hit like a wave. Best battles at the highest level--so intense. Young fans--check them out--that is the best basketball I have seen in my lifetime--you would think they were playing for their lives.

I put Magic in that maybe 2nd best player of all time debate. He did so much of what the team needed that he didn't get to do what he could have. I absolutely believe he could've led the league in scoring his entire career if he wasn't playing catalyst to the Showtime Lakers. If he never contracted HIV, the Lakers would have traded James Worthy for Larry Johnson and probably Shaq or at least Alonzo Mourning if history played out the same. Worthy was going through some injuries at the time and thought about going back to North Carolina to retire. When Magic retired he became the leader of the team. Further down the spiral I could see an old man Worthy and Jordan re-unite to mentor a young Kobe.

steph would be bounced around like a pinball against the skill, height, and length, of Magic at 6'8", Cooper 6'7" DPOY, Kareem 7'2", 6'9" Worthy, and AC Green at 6'9"--this team is an all-time team that played smart, unselfish basketball, and incredible team defense with incredible length and defensive talent and they are one of the best because they beat the best, as did Boston. This is the big-boy leagues--no pouting, no flopping, no draymon green shenanigans for damn sure. No one has a green light to shoot from 35 with 12 seconds on the shot clock out of respect for the game, and your teammates--they are working too hard to settle for something your opponent would gladly give you. Today's fan should watch those match-ups--any meeting of Boston's Bird, LA's Magic, Detroit's Thomas, Dumars & Rodman, Philadelphia's Dr. J & Moses Malone, Houston's Twin Towers--these are legendary, All-time teams--high IQ teams--only San Antonio's Duncan team has impressed me with their ability to play smart as a team on both ends like those 80s teams. I would tip my cap to the warriors in that department but steph's decision-making with the hero shots are just enough to spoil that argument for them--and it doesn't matter, from an identity and intelligence standpoint, if it goes in. I am surprised Kerr lets him get away with those--a bad basketball decision, and selfish--and yet, he really celebrates himself when they go in, and people (today's casual fan) like it and cheer him on. silly stuff..

He could have turned any team into a playoff squad. I’ve never seen 2 polar opposites. Magic the greatest passer - Curry the greatest shooter. Magic has the crazy passing highlight videos - Curry has the crazy shooting clips. It’s crazy stuff. I think they might be the 2 best most east to play with teammates ever. They could slot in with anyone. Curry might even be the best at that with his shooting and off ball play. Imagine if they played together 😂😂 I think what’s been forgotten with Magic is some of the playoff runs he had. Absurd stuff crazy stats efficiency the whole 9. If someone says they have Steph ahead of Magic I don’t have an issue with it. I have Magic ahead but they are clearly the top 2 and you really can’t go wrong with either.

Magic is the best PG in a history of the game. What should Curry do in order to pass him by? Simply just keep on playing and winning games. It seems like two more really good seasons (with deep play-off runs) from him should be enough. Another question: isn't it too much to ask from the player of his age? Looking at the Steph's this season games I can definitely say: no, he is still that good.

Magic would make mince-meat of steph curry, and so would his lakers do to the best warriors team. The lakers would encourage steph to shoot from 30 and beyond all game. And the problem for steph would be that is the only shot he would be able to get--imagining steph v Magic or cooper on defense with kareem defending the rim--good luck steph. People who weren't alive when the 80s Lakers and Celtics were around missed out on the best basketball played, at the highest level, in the toughest era, full of all-time greats that did more than just score. Magic makes Steph look completely one-dimensional and Magic was a true leader and floor general with the famous Showtime fast-break. I see steph celebrate himself like no other but that doesn't make him the playmaker, defender, rebounder (though steph is good for his size and position), or stealer of the ball that Magic was. Magic had complete game--steph is a great 3-point shooter of all-time.

Magic was not a GREAT 3 point shooter. He was decent. Picture how LeBron was defended in his first stint in Cleveland... Was he capable of hitting 3 point shots?? Sure... but if you were the defense, you'd rather have him shoot outside shots, instead of letting him drive where he could do most of his damage efficiently. Defenders sagging off of Magic was normal in the 80s, while they rarely left a guy like Bird wide open.

There are only seven game changers in the history of the NBA. The other greats are just great basketball players. Game changers meaning coaches tried to develop another guy, or GMs tried to find another guy or there are no other guys that could do what those guys do/did.
    1. 50s & 60s Russell: Dominance without being a scorer
    2. 60s-70s Wilt: Offensive Dominance
    3. 70s Dr J: Artistry (although other guys could do all the things he could do, Doc just looked better doing it)
    4. 80s Magic: Bringing out the greatness in his teammates
    5. 80s-90s Jordan: Other-worldly Artistry, offensive & defensive dominance & excellence at the entire game
    6. 2000s Dirk: 1st big man to do what guards were only allowed to do by coaches (he's the reason big men, 6'10"+, are allowed by coaches to dribble, shoot jumpers facing the basket & shoot threes & he's the reason why the 2000s was dominated by power forwards)
    7. 2010s Steph: Long distance excellence & forcing the league & coaches to put more emphasis on open floor play.
    * 2000s A.I: was a culture changer, not a game changer. He made guys want to be themselves & not just what the media & the league told them to be or forced them to be. His intensity, toughness, heart & realness is what his fans & his haters gravitated to. (BTW, Haters are really fans. They love to pay their money to see the guys they hate probably more than the guys they like. Floyd Mayweather, a big A.I. fan, proved that over & over.)
Kareem could be considered a game changer, but I don't think he changed the game, he just created an unstoppable shot. Bernard King, George Gervin, Adrian Dantley & Tony Parker also created an unstoppable shot. Calling Kareem a game changer means that those guys & Vince Carter, Tim Duncan are also game changers.
Nobody in else has brought anything new or game changing that one of those seven guys didn't already bring, except excellence or dominance at their positions.

Great video , love showtime myself , but you should put an emphasis on the fact that the rules changed after the malice in the palace and the league took out hand checking. That makes it a completely different game and the eras are incomparable. Steph didn't change the game he just adapted to the new rules. Magic will always be the greatest pg of all time

Dude got drafted to a team that had the best player of all time, and I’d bet money that he wouldn’t have those rings if he was alone at the beginning like everyone else. Just had to bring it up because your beginning argument was based on how his accolades are better and he did more in less time, but I bet if Steph got drafted to the cavs he had more than 4 rings….

Steph is a terrific scorer. An unbelievable shooter. But this is not an argument because Steph is NOT A POINT GUARD. He is listed as a point guard. It’s a technicality. Steph has never averaged more than 10 assists a game. Steph is a short SHOOTING GUARD. The point guard position directs the offense, makes plays and sets others up to score. And NOBODY did those things better than Magic. Steph is only a “point guard” on paper. But Magic was the real deal. The greatest point guard ever and it’s not even close. Oh and Magic was a shooter. He could shoot from the perimeter. Just didn’t do it all that often.

Your "changed the game" arguments are laughable 😂😂 magic saving the game didn't change the game 😂 nor did Jordan making it global change anything 😂😂 before curry guards just didn't shoot like that, even Reggie Miller or Ray Allen didn't shoot like curry, they went pulling up from 40 daily. I'll argue jordan showed you can dominate every category (just about) and still win. And magic showed you don't have to be 6'2 180lbs to b a point gaurd. The reasons you used were just dumb. I'd say dirk changed the game as well🤷‍♂️ but it's basically a no argument that curry easily changed the ACTUAL game of basketball more than anybody. Trea young, lamelo, and players like that play like that because curry made it ok. Ball dominate sg? There's one in every Era 😂 jordan isn't special he was just the best at it. Magic is more one of a kind, but still, we had Penny and Oscar and even Ben Simmons. There is a few Currys in the eras but few and far between, Mahmoud Abdul rauf is the big one that comes to mind 🤷‍♂️ obviously magic and jordan are better than curry, but they didn't change everything like he did
