Easter Eggs are hugely popular in the UK. You will find several aisles devoted to hundreds of different types. Cadbury will make an Easter egg in all of their chocolate bars as well as many other unique types. Cadbury cream eggs are very traditional for Easter but there are also galaxy eggs and many many others. You will probably be quite shocked to see just how many chocolate eggs are bought in the UK at Easter. They tend to be much larger than the eggs I have seen sold In the states and are normally presented in boxes filled with smaller treats.

To add to that you mentioned m&ms in the video those are supposedly based off our smarties, the story goes that during the Spanish civil war this guy Forrest Mars noticed that the soldiers had these little candy coated chocolates as part of their rations and was impressed, partly because they were a good little snack but also that the sugar shell preserved the chocolate and stopped it from melting, he has an idea.
So he goes back to the states and teams with a guy from hershey to make his own version and sells it exclusively to the us military, and so for the duration of World War 2 American troops had m&ms just like the soldiers in the Spanish civil war had their smarties. After the war the returning troops still wanted those little chocolate things so Forrest started selling m&ms to the general public and yeah the restis history

So I noticed that you said you thought he was going to pick grape Skittles. No sweets in the UK are ever grape flavour. The purple ones are always blackcurrant, and probably the most popular flavour over here. In general. The blackcurrant berries are really tart, a tiny hit of something at least as tart as lemon, but concentrated into a tiny berry. As children, we used to pick and eat them from our garden. We did the same for gooseberries, and they are just as tart. Guess the UK has a lot of tart fruit lol. Ok, so I paused the video, going to watch the rest now. Great video so far by the way.

The UK have very strict rules on what can and can not be put into food and sweets(candy) Cornsyrup is banned for example and if you read the back of each packet you will see a list of how much fat etc is inside.
Also when you look at the ingredients list anything that can be an issue with people's allergy's is printed in bold and The words contains nuts are very clear.
A certain UK chef who will remain nameless has just got the UK Govt. to put a sugar tax on Pop (soda) which mean that a can of normal coke costs more then a can of diet coke.

I brought in a packed lunch a lot because as much as I loved pizza I couldn’t eat it everyday for lunch

That flake bar, you can get smaller versions of them. They are commonly used to put in ice cream cornets, what you would call cones. Typically using vanilla ice cream, we call them 99's. Another thing you can do is crumble any flake bar over a bowl of ice cream. That's really lush.

Most British people if drinking Earl Grey would not have milk in it. Tea we have milk in would be what we call "Builders" Tea. A strong black tea with no extra flavours or oils (such as Earl Grey as these can cause the milk to curdle) and then add Milk and/or sugar to taste. In many places a variant on this would be called English Breakfast Tea, but we rarely call it that.

The reason there’s a price on the packaging and not usually like that in the US is because different states add different amounts of taxes whereas in the UK tax is solid and already added on to everything so it’s the one price across the UK.

Munchies are good, but I love the Mint Munchies even more :D Aww I'd love to send you some of my faves and some retro / unusual ones!
The Crisps - Prawn cocktail is my fave of those. Then the Tyrrells, then the Wotsits and cheese and onion would be joint last place.
The sweets - None of them would be my go-to absolute faves I'd pick in a shop, but would pick the minstrels as number one, maybe munchies, flake and mint kitkat 2nd. the fudge would be last, not a fan. (The middle is actually called fudge, proper fudge pieces are better. very sweet though).
Was actually curious how you made your tea, as seen/heard so many horrors haha! Do you have a kettle?
My fave tea at the mo is called Lady Grey - it is black tea with a slight citrus-y hint of orange - so good! Ceylon is also nice as it's again quite a nice refreshing tea. My mum doesn't drink tea with sugar but I have to have it in mine haha

The significant difference between British and American chocolate is the milk used in its manufacture. It's fresh in the UK whilst, due to the greater distances between manufacturing and farm in the US, the milk's life has to be artificially extended. Apparently that makes American-made chocolate less "creamier" and fresh tasting.

In uk and never seen giant skittles, must be really new.
Vimto is a type of juice but the bars come in lots of flavour.
The fudge advertisement used to be “ a finger of fudge is just enough “ that’s why it’s small, just like enough for a small treat, they are sold along with the larger bars, the price is on things so the shop can’t make the price up ( more expensive then should be )
Wotsits come in other flavours, I think maybe bbq? I’ve only ever had original though. Cheese and onion is the most popular flavour in the U.K. for crisps.
To answer your question if they sent you the best we have. Not really, they are good snacks but the are all run of the mill and could fill the box 5/6/7x over with snacks just as good.

      @@loveandjunkfood British Tea Basics.
Tea comes in various forms, but 'breakfast' Tea is what 99.9% of brits drink all the time, very few people drink grey or green tea.
To make a proper brtish cup of tea (Gordon Ramsay voice), put one tea bag in a large mug, not a little tea cup, were not having tea with the queen. Pour BOILING water onto the tea bag and stir, it's important to make sure your water is really boiling well or your tea will come out weak, do not allow any cold milk or water to wet your tea before the hot water goes in, leave to 'brew' for 1 or 2 minutes, squeze the teabag aginst the side of the mug with a spoon and remove it from the tea. Then add milk and sugar to taste, up to two tea spoons of sugar is common, some people drink tea without sugar. Builders and workmen often use two teabags and brew their tea longer, so it looks almost orange once milk is added.

It was a good selection. I haven't had fruit pastilles in years but used to get them as a treat when I was a kid, so you used to try to savour every one. And we pronounce it pastel, like the paint, we're not fancy.
Fudge bars were a favourite as a kid too, the jingle was "a finger of fudge is just enough to give your kids a treat" and are small so kids don't spoil their appetite. Or that's how they sold them to us anyway.
Americans always love prawn cocktail crisps too, I guess because its an unfamiliar flavour. When I was young crisps were either
    Ready salted
    Cheese & onion or
    Salt and vinegar
and that was it, then they started doing prawn cocktail and frazzles ('bacon' flavour).
Its funny how taste and cultural food norms independently evolve innit?

Most people do not buy individual bars of chocolate as they work out much more expensive. Every bar type is sold in a multipack that are usually 4 or 5 individually wrapped in an outer wrapping. Each brand also offers fun size multipack sizes of each type and a small selection box of minis such as Cadbury heroes or Mars Celebrations. They are all mini versions of different chocolate bars. My favourite chocolate bars are Cadbury Wispa, cadbury boost bar, cadbury star bar, Cadbury fruit and Nut and Cadbury old Jamaica.

Kitkat in the UK comes in mint, mint dark, orange, cockies and cream, peanut butter, salted caramel, lotus biscoff, lemon drizzle and Ruby cocoa. I am sure there are other limited editions I have missed but these I can think of off the top of my head. I have read recently that there are new flavours of gingerbread, honeycomb and chocolate hazelnut but I haven't tried them.

Really enjoyed watching this video. I like most of the Crisps, Sweets and Chocolate (haven't tried the mint kitkat though - I think its limited edition for Christmas). What you may be interested in is that our supermarkets in the UK: Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Lidl, Aldi, Waitrose, M&S Food do their own line of food (non food products also). I rarely buy brands. For example the supermarkets will have their own version of Wotsits at a cheaper price. I got the impression that grocery stores in the US just carry brands. Is that right? Sorry if I am wrong. The only exemption I know of is the Target Up and Up line. I have subscribed. I like your channel. Looking forward to more videos.

@@loveandjunkfood Oh yes I will look out for it. Thanks for making it. ...... A very random question I know but how do you boil water? In the UK we use electric kettles that you plug in the wall. They are as common as ovens over here. Just discovered that they are very uncommon in the US. I am very intrigued by it. Have you heard of electric kettles before?

    • @loveandjunkfood
      @loveandjunkfood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, we have electric kettles. We use one at home all the time. Mostly for French press coffee. They are all over here but I think a lot of people still use a cooktop kettle. Also, for your previous question, we do have many store brands in the States. Our Walmart brand (Asda in UK) is Great Value. Other stores have their own knock-offs as well. We typically buy the store brands except if it is for a video. One of our favorite crisps is from Canada. Their Great Value brand had a Chargrilled Chicken crisp that was amazing! We have a video on that if you're interested!

Thanks for clarifying information on both kettles and the food. The Canadian crisps sound good. I will definetly check out that video soon. As its around Christmas, its a UK Christmas staple to have Christmas Crackers. We put them on our dining tables next to our plates and we pull them togther as a family with crossed arms just before we eat. There were a series of Flake adverts in the 80s which basically sold the idea that women could indulge in this chocolate and that they loved it so much that they didn't care that it make bits everywhere. For example, a woman is in a rowing boat, eating a flake. The oars fall into the water and she now has no way to control the boat but she just lies down in the boat and enjoys the flake. Hence, she doesn't care because she's enjoying the flake so much. Similar one with a bath that is overflowing, but she doesn't care, she just lets it overflow while she eats the chocolate. Very memorable adverts that put across the message well. Also, it used to be called, 'The crumbliest, flakiest milk chocolate in the world.' But they stopped advertising the 'world' part. I'm guessing another crumbly chocolate company complained lol
