Go to any Fish & Chip Shop (Chippie) in both Australia & New Zealand is that you get (3 Three) different types of cooked fish which are' (1 ONE) Grilled Fish is a fillet &/or piece of fish which being fried &/or cooked on a Very Hot Plate Grill & (2 TWO) Battered Fish which is a fillet &/or piece of fish which is covered in either Thick &/or Thin Batter especially Beer Batter & then deep fried & finally (3 THREE) Crumbed Fish is a fillet &/or piece of fish which is covered in Breadcrumbs & then deep fried, of course.

Mushy peas are manna from heaven. In the UK, proper fish n' chip shops used to give away or sell 'scraps' or 'bits' which are the bits of batter collected from the fryer. Delicious.
Being a Northerner, my favourite combo is fish, chips, mushy peas and chip-shop curry.

Just to emphasise, fish n’ chips (a “fish supper” in some parts) was usually sold wrapped in paper ( old unsold newspapers for the outer wrap) & eaten either on the way home (with fingers!) or as soon as home, sometimes with a fork; if eaten outside & mush peas purchased, they would be eaten by scooping up with a chip. F & C we’re the original working class takeaway food; only in the last 30-40 years has eating as a sit down knife & fork restaurant meal become usual. Best ones probably are from the Magpie in Whitby.

Mushy peas are made with marrowfat peas. The peas are left to dry in the field, instead of being harvested when tender. A well known brand of marrowfat dried peas is Batchelors. The peas are soaked overnight in boiling water, along with the soaking tablets included in the box. The tablets contain sodium bicarbonate. After rinsing the peas, they're cooked in fresh water on the stove until they become mushy and the water has evaporated.

Brilliant video! Fish and chips is such a classic British meal! Most often the appeal is to eat it on the Coast out of the paper! (Special memories of romantically chatting and eating Fish and Chips together strolling on the pier and sitting together on a bench. ) But in the Midlands of England where I am from, we are far from the sea. But we have our own secret weapon of orange chips! Massive crispy fish with slightly battered chips!

Its great to see a place like this in the US that people are loving and even better that they called it ( A touch of Britain ) and not a Touch of England as sadly all to often I see in the US Britain as a whole being refereed to as England, like one reactor that was eating Haggis and said it was from England as in Britain. Malt vinegar and salt on the chips and peas is tasty but personally i do not put vinegar on the fish as it can make the batter coating soggy, instead i spread the tartar sauce on the fish.

Haddock fried in beef dripping is how it's done on the North Yorkshire coast. I'm biased, but these are the best fish n tates. Other fish are available in coastal chippy's such as Rock, Skate, Cod and Woof, all fresh out of the sea. Chippy's in my home town of Scarborough all use fresh fish, so the thing that distinguishes the best is the batter. A good chippy guards it's batter recipe as that is what will make or break it's business.
Southern England appears to use vegetable oils to fry in, healthier maybe, but no flavour for me, I just can't eat them at all.

There is certainly flavour in veg oil cooked chips to me, they taste disgustingly bitter, I have to pour a pint of vinegar over them, they need to be swimming in the stuff or the taste makes me feel sick. Don't worry about the vinegar making them mushy cos chips fried in that disgusting muck are already soggy because it burns if you heat it to the proper temperature to get crispy non soggy chips. As for being more healthy, that's debatable.

Cod is the best fish to have.
I have never seen anyone eat it with their hands, the chips yes but not the fish! Brown sauce or, tomato sauce is usually added, not always though, any soda will do. Pickled onions are also good to have, especially the silver skinned onions in white vinegar.

Good to see you trying fish 'n chips with the mushies . . . although, when I saw the size of the fish - I thought to myself, maybe they split the fish and the chips between them from 1 order of it? If it was an order each - then I think my legs may have given way at the small size of the portions! A fish where I am here (battered cod) - don't know what kind yours was . . . would literally almost fit an oval sized dinner plate - and the chip portion would have covered it . . . and at our prices here now which have went up again - that would have cost about £8-9 all in . . . the fish itself would have cost about £5.50 . . .
Sadly I'm not much of a condiment person myself to be fair . . . These days I usually just get the fish itself with an extra small bag of batter thrown in, as it's large enough to do me for the day with a few slices of bread used. If I do mushy peas, then I don't bother with vinegar even, as I just use the taste of peas along with the fish and the bread. If I'm going to put vinegar on, then I don't bother with the peas, just bread. My other way is just to make some gravy and pour it over the fish. The same bread fills you, and also mops everything up at the end, too!
The price of chips here, alone or when added to something has gone a bit wild now - so I just buy a bag of pots and make my own chips or fritters instead in the chip pan. 3 meals out of 1 bag of pots for only a £1 or less, so you can't lose really . . . and have saved about £5 just by doing that by home cooking them . . . and again, I just ,make some gravy to put on them, and have a few slices of bread with them . . .
Anyways, keep on enjoying your various meals and dishes you two . . . as there are still a lot of great UK dishes for you to try out yet . . .

Besides fish 'n chips (not greasy and served with mushy peas), what else is on the British foods menu? Baked beans on buttered toast? Americans who visit the UK come for our fish 'n chips (traditional - eaten using fingers or a chip fork, off of ink-free news paper. Or sit down - on a plate with a knife and fork - in a pub, cafe, restaurant or a takeaway with indoor seating) but Americans who live here know they've settled when their taste buds return from a holiday (vacation) and crave baked beans on toast with a nice cup of tea.

Absolute class! Fish, chips & mushy peas.. with Dandelion & Burdock!! Whoever the English person is who put together the fish & chip tea, must have been from Northern England - just had to be!! Ben Shaws "Dandelion & Burdock" accompanying fish & chips is the law north of Stoke on Trent(or fizzy Vimto if from the Lancashire side of the border; Ben Shaws being a Yorkshire firm 🙄... you can't have everything in life) and you don't really get mushy peas, or 'owt moist such as curry sauce or gravy, served with fish & chips in the south of England either ("South" being south of Birmingham, or perhaps more specifically South East of England & Home Counties. Actually, if you served mushy peas in the Home Counties, not only would they look down on you, but they would also think it was Guacamole at first viewing and not mushy peas - see this for more detail - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North%E2%80%93South_divide_in_England) .
Definitely a Northern England tea - the mushy peas and Ben Shaws D&B is a dead giveaway! Fish & Chips were actually invented in Oldham, Lancashire by John Lee's in the early 1860's. Lancashire is a County in Northern England BTW and not to be confused with our poorer neighbour to the east, Yorkshire, bless 'em!
EDIT - Maybe a northern thing (possibly more Yorkshire than Lancashire 🤔), but many times you see mushy peas with a touch of mint sauce added to them; not everywhere, more likely to be in a pub rather than a regular fish & chip shop, but mint sauce (not dollops of the stuff 🙄) does add a nice touch to it. I think Colman's is the leading brand but Mint Sauce is a common store cupboard item over here.

Also, sarsons malt vinegar and proper chips rather than fries was great! However, and I preface this with, sorry to put a downer on things, but I was also quite horrified to see both the size of the portions(especially of the fish) and the price of the meal! The fish size in Britain is often about 3 times as big as the one you both had on your plates and the average price in the north of England at least for the same order(with the larger portions of fish and chips) is £6.50. Which I think at the current rate of exchange would be around $9(again, for a fish 3x the size). So I'll finish by saying that I can't help but feel the owners/managers of this store are utterly ripping people off for their meals! I really am quite horrified and a little disgusted and disappointed with they're business practices to charge good people like yourselves such exorbitant prices($13.95c) for so little given. We got a jar a mint sauce sent to us and we plan to try it in mushy peas. How much mint sauce do you usually add?

Not being funny but that looks nothing like the fish we have in the UK, more like the Birds Eye frozen fish you find in supermarkets, great to see proper chips though.

It was much better than what we can get frozen here. Though I know there is a big difference in size!

Where’s the rest of your fish?! Tiny portions there.
Mushy peas aren’t normal peas. They’re marrowfat peas that are bigger and a totally different sort. Weirdly, you never see them for sale anywhere here except as pre-made mushy peas.

Ketchup is my typical dip for chips.

You are supposed to mix & match with mushy peas on the fish & on the chips

We did dip our chips in the mushy peas. Next time we'll have to try it with the fish too.

"Served pouched" and "From the grille". OK then, so via a koala and the front of a vehicle. This I would like to see. Are you sure the owners are English?

LOL! I never noticed the typo. We didn't have the fish pouched. Or poached for that matter!

I came here to make the same comment about the 'glaring' spelling error - LOL! Whatever happened to editing before printing ? 😃

You should get a discount from A Touch of Britain with the amount of advertising you give them. It looks like a nice place but I wasn't impressed by the Union flag at 0:25 on the wall menu that was nothing like the true flag.
