@@ellencrimitrent Yes! I love how you talk us through what you’re doing and your thought process as you’re working. I greatly appreciate your style. Many thanks!!
I love Bee paper and have been using it for several years since I started to paint. I have not used the Bee journal but have bought many journals that are 100% cotton paper. I found putting my painting in a journal keeps me my organized. The one journal I really like but it is a bit pricey is the Etcher journals. It has a hard cover but not spiral like the Bee. If you haven’t tried it, it might be worth it.
What I like about Bee 100% cotton journals: the paint is dispersed evenly, it will take water without buckling at least as much as you are going to do in a sketchbook, the paper is heavy enough so that I can use the reverse side of a page for swatches and testing without affecting the painting on the reverse side, with the rectangular sizes you can orient the sketch portrait or landscape, and the spiral saves space as it will lie flat even with one side tucked behind the other, great for travel or painting in small spaces
I get upset with myself when I watch you Ellen, you are so relaxed and at ease when you paint, unlike me, I find myself self getting more and more uptight as I proceed. Is there an exercise that I can do so that I don’t end up with sore shoulders and neck?. I am not normally an uptight person. 🤪😵💫😂❤️
I really like the hardback spiral-bound watercolor journal made with Kilimanjaro paper from Cheap Joe’s. Paper is 100% cotton, 140 lb. cold press, and comes in a couple of sizes. There’s a choice of bright white or natural white. I heard about it from Steve Mitchell of Mind of Watercolor. Cheap Joes is often out of stock though.
I’m finding the Bee 100% cotton watercolor sketchbook to be more similar to hot press than cold press. Which is fine, however, masking fluid doesn’t come off this paper without damaging the paper. I tried 3 brands…Daniel Smith, Winsor & Newton and Goya. I did not use a heat tool.
I really enjoy watching you paint, Ellen. It's fun to see how your painting changes with each layer. The black really gave it a new look too. Thanks for sharing with us. You're The Best!
The painting is glorious. So beautiful. My new favorite sketchbook is where I cut an 11x14 pad in half and bound with a comb binding (I also cut the cardboard backing from the pad and use it as my covers). Looks just like that new Arches sketchbook. It's got a 7x11 format so I can do two small portrait sketches or one wide landscape. I'm thrilled, although I have a tough time not buying sketchbooks, even when I know they're inferior to mine, ha.
I love Bee paper, they were bought by another company awhile ago and the paper was not available for a while. Their postcards were nice as well. Thanks for your videos. Safe travels.
I have searched for the perfect w/c sketchbook forever … I have tried too many brands to list so I tear & pamphlet stitch my Arches cp paper … she ain’t pretty but she works ❤
I have the loose leaf Bee paper, might need to try the sketchbook. What i have noticed is there is consoderably less sizing than i expected. I like the paper for "sketching" or anything that does not require lots of water, but trying to do full washes results in pilling. That being said when i do Beatrix Potter/Winnie the Pooh esk style it works well and will take multiple layers so long as you control your water.
You are amazing, watching you draw/paint gives me hope! I’m trying to fine the right paper, sketch books, that go to class as well as painting at home! So many available, like a kid in a candy store. I’ll look for Beecreative when I’m out and about, love your palette, I’m still experimenting, and love color, so I’m in trouble. I really appreciate you showing placing and free handing, I’m hoping to be as loose and worry free as I see when I watch your videos. Thanks for sharing your baby talents, Karen Dirmish 25:4025:40
I left a message on your website. I recommend Arteza, hard cover, 64 pages, acid free, spiral bound, 140 lbs., 5.5" x 8.5", doesn't say if cotton (I doubt it), perforated pages, but it does not warp with watercolor and I still struggle with amount of water on my brush! I did wet on dry. I live in Colorado so my paints both in the palette and on the paper dry very fast. It works also for my zentangle. Nice tooth.
I think you made me realize why i struggle with some paper. I am in Colorado too and the bee paper i have dries way too fast compared to the arches I’ve used.
Love your painting style and your personality. Would you ever consider doing more of your “therapy Thursday” type presentations? I don’t know if you’re familiar with ASMR videos but your therapy Thursday videos combined the best of both worlds - ASMR and watercolor painting.
This is my favorite sketchbook. It was out of stock at all online art stores for over a year and now the company is no longer making these sketchbooks. I have yet to find a comparable sketchbook unless I make my own from good paper like Arches or Hahnemhule.
Beautiful! I normally do your tutorials on Arches paper but I am seriously considering buying a watercolor journal. Would this be top of your list to recommend? Or would you consider another brand of watercolor journal? I love your tutorials and I love the idea of doing them in one journal.
Loved the video. Interested in any other sketch book reviews you do. Looking for a good one. I have etchr and the book is very expensive and I don't like the quality of the paper. Thanks again for your video.
I’ve been looking Paul Rubens watercolor sketchbook. It’s 100% cotton and I heard nice things about their paper. It’s also has a block format, which some can hate or love (and I’m not sure where I am there ). It would be awesome to see your review of it. I’m also looking to but a sketchbook for travel and don’t wanna spend a ton of money on it.
@@ellencrimitrent just checked amazon and they have both blocks and journals. Just curious about their quality because the price is nice and their covers too, but reviews are different which means either their quality is inconsistent or just a matter of taste. Not sponsored by them, just trying to figure out a nice option for my travel without breaking a bank (and hopefully avoiding a disappointment). Thanks for your review! It’s good to see some more affordable options work quite well too.
I tried this on A5 fabriono drawing book. It has a hard cover and was quite good to paint on. I drew in a micro black pen as my picture was a bit bland. It's not too bad. I usually use bockingford sketch books at the local bookstore. I can't buy the kind you used here in NZ. Many thanks
Ellen, you remind me of Kristy Rice. She really encourages having fun. I know I get to serious but your mini Mondays have helped so much. Thank you for that series.
I straight suck at doing these lol but I watch you bc I love your stuff and I love watching the process to learn. I do stuff well enough people want to and do buy from me but whipping a bouquet out of my head like this just flops 🤣
I dont know if its just me but im struggling with this paper. It dries so fast that i end up having to use way too much water to even get close to the look I want. Like i like the effect and i can see its good paper but how fast it dries is what trips me up
I love how you talk AS you paint rather than voice-over speed drills!!
thanks I dont like them so thanks!

@@marytesta3003 I saw someone else review the spiral bound Kilimanjaro notebook and the really loved it, too. I don't remember who it was, though.

I love this painting it's so stunning. I will try it I would be blown away if I could do something this beautiful.
I don't know how I didn't know these are 100% cotton! I love bee paper gonna have to get some!
I use these for sketching and practice .
Etchr lab sketchbooks are wonderful. Front and back can be worked on. They are a little more expensive but sooo nice.
Good to know!
