I was today-years-old finding out! Someone was curbing a bunch of vinyl and the Typical Male single was one of them...I was like this couldn't be the same song, let alone the original. I've only known Aswad's version! So glad I didn't leave it :)
I been saying that for years. I remember when I brought the single typical male in 1986 an Don't turn around was the b:-sidean I kept thinking wtf lol this could have been a single
This was my fav Ace of Base song and here I was scrolling through TH-cam and happened upon this gem!! She always owns the song just didn't know she owned this one! What a great song! Beautiful
WHAT??? I always thought Ace of Base’s version was the best... until now. WOW TINA TURNER!!! Why didn’t they release this as a single? It would definitely have been a number 1
I thought Ace Of Base was the original artist for this song (pls don't judge me). Then I happened upon Bonnie Tyler's version & thought she was the original artist. And then I stumbled upon this version by Tina Turner. Oh my, didn't know this song go waaay back. One thing's for sure though, this was another gem written by Diane Warren - the greatest songwriter ever.

Spent my afternoon listening to different versions of this song. Ace of Base, Aswad and Tina Turner's. I love them all but I personally love Ace of Base's version most, since i grew up in the 90's.
I did the same. Ace of Base version is alright, and I never knew that Tina is the original artist. Tina makes this song so much stronger and emotional (yeah, big surprise!) To me Aswad is always the one and only version. It really hit me when came out. Anyway 80's music is always number one!
My mind is BLOWN. I had zero idea umtil today that Tina did it first. Tina>A.O.B. Her emotion in this song gives me goosebumps! Phenomenal woman ⚘️. Rest in power, queen.
Fantastic rendition of her own song. She sounds incredibly relevant; her powerful, soulful voice is second to none. And you can actually understand the lyrics ;) .
Wow! I was TODAY years old when I found out this was the song that inspired Ace of Base's version (Which was one of my fave songs out of 1993's "The sign"). What can I say? Tina's voice and take on it is so powerful and touching that it made me well up at 1:20 am. Great discovery!
Introduced to this song by Ace of Base in 1993, then found out it was a cover of an Aswad song about 5 years later. Now a further 13 years later and I find out that that was a cover as well. I'm thinking of starting a blog for "songs that you didn't know were covers". A few months back I heard the original version of Vengaboy's "We're going to ibiza" ("I'm going to Barbados") which was a bit of a shocker as well.
Thank you for posting this! I owned the Typical Male single when I was a kid and loved this song on the B-side. Never thought I'd find it again. Brings back some great memories. She did such an amazing version of this song. THANK YOU!
Tina had some great B sides in the 80s. I love I Wrote a Letter and Keep Your Hands Off My Baby should have been on Private Dancer, and this should have been on Break Every Rule.
Tina is phenomenal. But I still love the Ace of Base version. Early Tina is fantastic, and gets overlooked. I'm talking Ike and Tina timeframes. Some of the jammiest stuff ever....
The first version was the Tina Turner as B Side of Tipical Male single on 1986. Diane Warren (Her composer together to Albert Hammond) was disapoint about the treat record label (Capitol) gave to the song. Later in 1988 was sent to Bonnie Tyler for record it, but Sony Music dont promoted the album Hide Your Heart and never released this song as a single. Aswad and Ace Of Based did them version later.
I was a teenager when Ace of Base made it big; shame nobody knew it was a cover. Tina Turner's vocals blow away the dance pop overproduced Ace of Base version.
I Knew this song was gave to tina 1st and I love the Ace of base version which is the only reason why I am here right now. But until today I never knew she actually did the song. Love this song both versions.
Gustavo Retana Actually there was already a famous cover of this song before Ace of Base. Don't turn around by Aswad 1988. Tina Turner original version was in 1986 and Ace of Base 1994
I'm the same... I'm totally blown away. Ace of Base's version is one of my fave songs EVER! I just recently found out a couple days ago it's a Tina Turner original, omg!
Hold on a tic, she was the FIRST major artist to record this? And Ace of Base's version came later? I had no idea!!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯 (also had no idea there were so many others who covered it!)
God this was a great version! Should had been a single. Always thought this was a Aswad song Ace of Base covered but she did it and Albert Hammond (dad of The Strokes Albert Hammond Jr) wrote it

Record companies screwed her out of two hits: this record, Don't Turn Around, and 2002's The Game of Love w/Santana. She did revive and give a bridge to Bonnie Tyler's "The Best" so... win some, lose some.
Never knew Tina recorded this until today. What a great version.
I just found out today too! lol
I found out TODAY!
It's her song i believe
Her version is the original, but her label didn't release it.

It went No1 in the UK April 1988 when I was born, covered by Aswad.
100% 👍

Neil Diamond also covered this song. His version is my favorite.
The Ace of Base version has a better arrangement.
Y'all should listen to the reggae version by Aswad
1. TINA TUNER'S VERSION
2. ASWAD'S VERSION
3. ACE OF SPADE'S (Hihi hihi) VERSION
I always liked Aswads version

RIP Tina Turner, thanks for sharing your immense talent to the world
Tina Turner is simply the best.
Tina Turner- The original version was simply the best.
Thanks for the memories. 🌹
I never knew Tina sang the original version.
Neil Diamond also recorded a version before Ace of Base.
This could have been another gold record in her collection. 💜👏
Gold, ha!
I'm mad that I am 36 year's old and never knew she sung this first. Only knew the ace of base cover. This 💩 is deep AF!!! R.i.p Tina :( ❤
I wished that I had the opportunity to see you in concert. Rest in peace Queen🙏🏾
She's "Simply the Best."
Or even better than the rest? 🤷🏼♂️
How did I never know Ace of Base's version was a cover??
This version is too good to have been wasted as a b-side.
I agree!
This shoulda been a hit for Tina Turner!
Search up the version done by Aswad to hear where Ace Of base based theirs on.
Tom Erdahl Ikr. I've just been informed about it today.

Just found out after seeing Tina the musical that she was the original singer of this great song. I always it was an Ace of Base song!
beautiful song, beautiful tina she rockx
Underrated hit from Tina, because although its the very first version, original (1986) never was launched as a videoclip.
Only just found this version really powerful
I like Tina Turner's version a lot better than the version from Ace of Bass. Tina Turner could make every song sound good!
Let's face it - Tina makes any song she does, HER OWN. No discussion!
