Why Did My Fishing Rod Break, The Stress Test (High Sticking)

  • What causes a fishing rod to break? Was it my fault that the Ugly Stik snapped when I was landing a fish the other night? In this video I use a Shimano brand rod and recreate the event of landing a fish while doing what is know as "high sticking". This experiment was really a lot of fun and the results really have caused me to wonder if I actually did something wrong while landing the Snook that broke my rod or was there a manufacture's defect that caused it to snap in two?

I’ve been high sticking my Medium Inshore Select 7’ Ugly Stik for about a year now and no issues. I always do that, drop the reel down and grab right by the first eyelet. Also when it comes to Ugly Stik, some people are just tackle snobs 🤷‍♂️

Although I'm a woman, I've been fishing for at least 60 years. My father was a stern teacher. He taught me to never hold a rod above the handle area. That was a cardinal since that I never committed. I've therefore only broken them in doors!! Never by high sticking! But he swore that's a surefire way to snap one. I didn't want to mention it though.

Very interesting video brother... I highstick fish in the boat all the time...and exclusively use ugly stick rods especially inshore and i haven't had one break yet...but i have broke many st Croix rods doing the same thing..think maybe there was a production issue with the rod you broke...absolutely a great subject ..

It's due to the broken rod being made of graphite. Graphite rods are strong but the weight needs to be loaded differently. It appears the other rod you used was probably fibreglass. Check out this really good video for a demonstration of why graphite rods can break. m.th-cam.com/video/r5fqh2oHZ-E/w-d-xo.html

Lower end rods have a lower amount of graphite in them which makes them more flexible which is probably why the Shimano didn’t break but the ugly stick did

You are a little off on what "high sticking" is. High sticking does not refer to where you grab the rod at. It refers to the angle you have your rod in relation to the water. When you raise it at a high angle close to 90 degrees and have a load on it the tip cannot act as the shock absorber it usually does. The rod will break closer tO where you are holding it. In the case of your ugly stick up higher on the rod. In the case of my $300 custom titanium skeleton rod it was down lower right above the handle, but I still "high sticked" it.

  • @Brian-xu9uq

It's a good demonstration. One thing I'd like to comment is every stick has a spin and fish kicks sideways. Maybe it try shaking the rod tip to mimic the fish see how the rod tip holds up when the weight is shifting off it's spine.

That's a good question. I don't think Ugly Stik labels this particular rod like that. I'm pretty sure they just call it a medium heavy. It's a long an skinny rod though.

Graphite is a wonderful thing. It allows for a lighter and much more sensitive rod. The downside is it also is much more prone to breakage. It’s a trade off. The Ugly Stick Select states that it has 35% more graphite than the GX2. Its still a composite rod but without knowing the total (proprietary) graphite content, you can’t compare. I expect the Shimano you tested had a much lower graphite content ($20). Additionally, there may have been some minor damage on your Select at the breaking point. All it would take would be a scratch. This is why I use a rod like a Shimano Teramar (or similar) for bridge/pier fishing. It has 2 layers of graphite and 2 of fiberglass. Slightly heavier but stands up better to minor damage. Absolutely nothing wrong with Ugly Stiks. I own one.

But I have seen ugly sticks left on sea walls and rough surfaces break . Don't know the use or storage .or age but. But for the price for what you get I bought more . I have broken 100 and 200 rods faster. You probley got a defective one . But keep us posted if you do it again . Nice videos 👍 one of your fans keep fishing Kap

My best guess is that the Ugly Stik rod had a very small compromise in manufacturing or it was minimally scratched or damaged over time and compromised. J.C. you using Ugly Stik and Penn Pursuit II is what gives you that "everyday man" relatability. I see guys fishing online with Van Staals and just can't relate. Way out of my league. With that said, you should really check out the Penn Spinfisher VI. The drag is strong and it is a super durable reel. You can get combo's online for not too much. You could get a better drag and a sized down reel. Keep up the great videos!

It might just be a mass produced rod issue. I've seen over the years Ugly Stik has decreased their warranty consistently and due to their price point I feel as though they arent concerned about quality anymore with their newer models. I also love the ugly stik brand and find that my older models seem to be the better rods overall.

The more graphite in the rod it become more brittle it becomes more sensitive and the cost is higher. The more fiberglass in the rod it becomes more durable (flexible) less sensitive and usually cost less.

Great vid. JC..yes high sticking is possible but I think it was just a stress point that finally gave up. we put a lot of pressure on those rods a lot more than the average fisherman and they don't last forever, but I also own numerous ugly sticks because they do hold up to all the bumps and punishment I put them thru. I've broke more High end full graphite rods than Ugly sticks that's for sure ...Tight lines brother

I think this is the answer for sure !!! The Ugly Stick rods are not great for sensitivity with lures or feel fishing but tough as nails for for fishing of other types where all that flexibility is not an issue. J.C has been doing this so long his hands are well calibrated to small bites on an unsensitive rod. Wish I was half the fisherman he is.
