    The running theory is that the people who got Airbending during Harmonic Convergence were not only people who were super spiritual (since the Nomads were the most spiritual nation) but also people who had Air Nomad ancestry since the Nomads were known to have children with people of every nation and some who were not masters (amd didnt have their tattoos yet) went into hiding in the Earth Kingdom during the war and the ability was slowly lost over time.

    • @jadziawynter9241
      @jadziawynter9241 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +53

      There is also a theory that Ty Lee from the original series was a descendent of an airbender because she was so naturally agile and mobile and instead of the usual Fire nation amber color eyes Ty Lee's eyes are dark brown, which you could get if you mixed the grey eyes of an air nomad with the amber eyes of a fire nation citizen!

    • @SoulWolf2852
      @SoulWolf2852 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don’t understand the theory though since the airbenders would’ve came out of hiding once the Avatar came back and/or after the war.

    • @declanmckenna6854
      @declanmckenna6854 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @SoulWolf2852 the theory works under the assumption that the children of any Air Nomads that went into hiding didn't have the ability to Airbend since they were disconnected spiritually while in hiding (Kyoshi's mother for example was an Air Nomad who actually lost her ability to Airbend when she left the religious lifestyle) and that because the Nomads knew that they were being actively hunted and the the Fire Nation was setting traps using stolen Air Nomad items and relics, they would be suppressing and hiding any and all aspects from everyone around them out of fear. I wouldn't be surprised if the Air Acolytes were people who were decendents of these hidden Airbenders who were trying to reconnect with one of their heritages.

    • @resdent2922
      @resdent2922 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SoulWolf2852You also have to realize that it's been a hundred years since the avatar's return, and even longer if you count the at the time still healing tensions between the Fire Nation and everyone else afterward. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those bloodlines had forgotten their ancestry over the generations. And for those who did still remember, they likely either became the Air Acolytes or continued to suppress their practices out of fear that the war could potentially start back up.
      Judging by how things are in Korra's time however, it looks like a majority of them may have simply forgotten their Air Nation roots.

    Love the discussion on the "realness" of Korra's world. Especially with how there's an equivalent to the Industrial Revolution between this show and O.G. Avatar, we still see bending rooted in this world's culture in a way that is very believable. Fire benders that can use lightning work at the power plants. Metal benders form the core of the police force. Sporting events center around bending, etc.
    But at the same time, technology is also allowing for non-benders to close the gap with benders in a way that was never before possible.
    The writers in both shows did justice to the stories they felt needed to be told.

    Bumi had tried to air bend before. Probably quite hard, actually. Remember that scene when he was in front of Aang’s statue and apologized because he couldn’t bend, but that he tried to keep the world safe as best he could anyway. Airbending is absolutely not something he thought he’d ever be able to do.
    Also, about Aang and the air scooter, he actually invented that technique. That was the move that earned him his tattoos, because air benders are deemed to have mastered the skill when they’ve either mastered all of the various training techniques passed down by the monks or they’ve become so advanced with the skill that they create something new. Aang’s invention was the zoomy ball lol.

      The families of benders were often traumatised by it, too, such as Sokka not wanting Katara to waterbend, and Haru's mother trying to get him to stop. Both their communities would have people hesitant about being near benders, just due to the risk of attracting the Fire Nation.

This would go off the theory that The Lee had Air Nomad genes, but basically the theory is (since a graphic novel showed the Fire Nation bated Air Bender with relics after the attacks on the Air Temples) That a bunch NonBender Air Nomads (or Acolytes probably) survived and went into hiding, eventually breeding themselves into extinction. So this would be, most people descended of those survivors. I wouldn't be surprised if the world saw a spike in other benders at this time, but Air was the most obvious, as Air Benders were 'extinct.'

    I think Bending is part genetic part spirit. The ones developing air bending now have air benders in their ancesstry. They just didnt have access to more spirit fuel until harmonic convergence

    The assumption that just because people could airbend they'd all fall in-line with air nomad culture was the height of hubris.
    I immediately thought of how annoying door to door missionaries are when I first saw this and was actually rather glad when that first guy told Tenzin to pound sand.

    Harmonic convergence takes place once every ten thousand years, so the closing of the Spirit Portals was almost exactly ten thousand years ago.

    If you’re wondering how Zaheer learned airbending so quickly, I always saw it as he taught himself all the airbending teachings and airbending as a regular fighting style (it is based on Ba Gua) he just didn’t have the actual bending to go along with all of his knowledge and skills. He was quoting a 400-year-old airbending master from memory.
    This is what I love about the cameos in Legend of Korra. They make sense. They have a purpose. Katara mirroring what her grandmother said about leaving the South Pole makes complete sense. Of course, Aang would be there because Korra is dealing with some of Aang's mistakes. Why wouldn't Iroh offer guidance to another Avatar? Sokka didn't have to be the representative for the South Pole at the trial but it makes sense that he would be. They're not just thrown in there and they're not forgettable.

    I mean, there is a reason why season 3 is amazing ^^ Zaheer and his team are great villains. The most terrifying fact is they already were when Zaheer was only a normal man. Now he has airbending. And...let's just say if people didn't took that element as serious before, now they will.
    Bumi probably know some move from when he was younger but never developed air bending so it stayed like that. And he is a military man, he has training ^^

    People weren't aware of a problem before, now there is a problem, and Korra was involved.
    People always want to blame something for their problems and Korra is the easiest scapegoat.
    Doesn't matter that the problem "she caused" was in order to prevent all of their deaths.
    People are f***ing stupid. That's how it be. Weirdly though most individuals tend to be reasonably smart. Groups just rile each other up into stupidity.

    You guys should read the comics, especially The Rift and Imbalance because the Rift has a big conflict about how machines are replacing benders in factories, and benders are losing jobs. Imbalance has a really interesting plot about non benders feeling oppressed by benders.

    Oh man, the title for the first chapter is so apt. This season felt like such an upgrade from season 2 even in just the first two episodes. The biggest improvement had to go to Korra though. She’s still hot headed but she already feels so much lighter this season. My favorite scene has to be when she’s talking to the guy on the bridge. Perfection
    Asami really is that friend that will hook you up, man. Best girl. Also her bonding with Korra is so great.
    Awkward Mako is my favorite.

Locked away like a final boss without being a bender means he had to be a highly skilled, intelligent fighter and just added air bending to his fighting ability. Now you have all of my top 5 characters Mako, Zaheer, Amon, Lin, and Bolin.

    5:50 I think there were less benders in ATLA. The fire nation took a lot of benders and locked them up from both the south and the earth kingdom. So benders were scarce or they were fire benders attacking and oppressing the other nations.
    So it might have started back then

    15.50 - the harmonic convergence happens every 10,000 year, as for how many avatars there r there's a theory that korra is #183. if u do the math the average lifespan is 55, factor in that aang n kyoshi both lived over 150, some lived even shorter.
    minor spoiler if u haven't read the kyoshi books.
    kurruk the water bender before kyoshi that lost his wife to ko only lived to 33

    I have nothing solid to base my fan theory on, but I think all the new air benders have some kind of connection to air bending in their personalities. Rava closed the portal about 10,000 years ago.
