Seems like El barely got mentioned and he killed this song. It was like they didn't want to mention his name. Classic nonetheless, one of the best slow grooves.

Yeah, seems as though El was barely mentioned considering the fact that he wrote both his part and Barry Whites parts. Yep, that's right for those who didn't know. I remember the various interviews with some of them including quincy jones, in RightOn magazine, BlackBeat and Jet magazine. And, it was mentioned by Donnie Simpson on Video Soul. This is what happens when you're tricked out of your publishing.
I’m telling you one thing. El Debarge owned that song on the soul train awards okay. Can’t believe he just glosses over El like that.

I was around 19 when Secret Garden arrived. It put me in a zone. Now, almost 30 years later, when I listen to it, it brings more meaning. It’s so beautiful. 😭❤️

Damn! They act like to they didn't know, or forgotten about El DeBarge being on the damn song. Even Al B Sure. He named S. Garrett that also has a song with El DeBarge which is on my youtube channel if you haven't heard it, before he mentioned El. As if she had a leading part or even in the song. & El had the BEST solo & turnt it out, when they all tried doing their trademark vocals at the end.

TRUTH CAUSE AL LIP SINC HIS DAMN PART
El DeBarge had that quite confidence about himself and knew who and what he was. Barry was Barry, and James had his career going for awhile at that point. Al was happy and thankful to be there , but at that point, he was in over his head when it comes to the other guys.
That being said, this is a great song and in my top 10 all time. Thanks to Quincy Jones for putting a great mix of talent together to pull this off.

Wow, Al refuse to give us the full T on the making of The Secret Garden. I remember El DeBarge claiming he wrote the part that Al sang and later Al sued Quincy because it became a million seller and he wanted writing credit along with Q, El and Seideh. Their was a lot of drama behind the making of this classic and hopefully the truth will come out. I guess only Time Will Reveal.their live performance of this classic on the Soul Train Awards was amazing however.

These are all great points..but you gotta give Al his credit too...he comes from blues royalty but he hit the ground running, toured his ass off in patent leather and no socks..greeted everybody in massively long lines with a smile. I was one of them. This cat knew music..WROTE lyrics AND score...the four guys each representing basically what their era of r &b was..in that sequence..the whole thing was genius..in part to the feeling you got from each one..

lol Al sure can talk. I was waiting on some tea about Secret Garden but he really didn’t say anything too deep. I heard an interview with El when he said he had been at the studios all night till the next morning with the others recording their parts. Then it was his turn and he wanted to go home and regroup. Quincy said nope. Do it now. El didn’t like his first take but Q thought it was perfect and that’s what was used.
@Al B. Sure naww bro you made a mistake on the talent that came out of the town you mentioned, Ahmaud, Rashad is from my home town of Tacoma Wa. And Phylicia Rashad was from Houston Texas but as I looked her up she did go to school in Mt Vernon….
