How the NBA Draft Lottery Changed Celtics History [Twice!] | NESN Explains Ep. 2

  • What if the Celtics had drafted Tim Duncan or Kevin Durant? Two of the greatest players in NBA history slipped through the fingers of a Celtics franchise that underwent a brutal stretch in the 1990s and early 2000s.
After the retirement of Larry Bird and before Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, the ping pong balls of the NBA Draft Lottery made sure Duncan and Durant went elsewhere. When they did finally bounce the right way, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum came to Boston. Call it even? Call it lucky!

I wrote an article just after the 2007 draft lottery about this very topic. Titled "What luck of the Irish?" Outlining all the Cs misfortune from Len Bias, Reggie Lewis, Injuries, bad drafts, missing out on Duncan, Durant and (at the time) Greg Oden. Like the Red Sox prior to 2004, I proclaimed the Celtics cursed. The day after publication, Danny Ainge traded for Ray Allen and KG... Making me look like a dumbass. 😂

Celtics losing out on Bias and Lewis careers was tough to overcome and set the organization back years. There was no doubt bias was going to be a generational talent and lewis had just made the all star team.
Imo the world lost out on getting to watch bias develop as a pro. That tragedy gets me 😢

I mean it’s terrible to think that those two kids could have been superstars. The Celtics could have kept on winning. My thing is that people need to get past all the color crap. Either you hate whites or you hate blacks stop with the Bull shit.

I like what has become of the Celtics. We didn’t need Kevin Durant. We traded down for Tatum and go Brown straight up. Now we have so many roll players it’s not fair…

It all came back around when they got the number 1 pick in the lottery they had the Lowest odds of getting. They then traded that pick down to 3 took Tatum and fleeced the 76ers for more. Things have a way of balancing out

After wemby im convinced the lottery is rigged for the spurs whenever they’re bad and need a generational talent

Don't forget 2014 draft, where supposedly cant miss superstars like Wiggins and Jabari Parker were the top prize along with Embiid

TD21 and KD were not meant to be a Celtics. Fate has other plans for the Celtics. But missing out on the Tim Duncan sweeptakes was a very big miss for the Celtics. Tim Duncan helped the San Antonio Spurs win 5 NBA championships and almost 20 years of 50 plus win regular seasons. What could have been 😔😔
Celtics fans should thank GM Danny Ainge for building majority of the core of that 2024 NBA championship team. He deserves a championship ring for that.😊😊☘️☘️🏆🏆

DUNCAN probably wouldnt even won a RING if he was drafted to the CELTICS...
He had stability with POPOVICH and the same staff...he had ROBINSON to help him grow..he had MANU to carry him in 2005 TP in 2007 and K.LEONARD in 2014...

The Celtics would have about 22-23 titles (all in the same city) had they gotten Tim Duncan. We still did alright, by landing Chauncey Billips at 3rd, but idiot Rick Pitino traded him away, in his rookie season. I'm glad they didn't "win" the 2007 Lottery, though, because no matter what Danny Ainge tries claiming years later, he would have absolutely chosen Greg Oden #1, which would pretty much work out as well as Len Bias did. I was livid on that night, in 2007, but I'm glad it worked out how it did. We traded Jeff Green for Ray Allen, then traded for Kevin Garnett a few weeks later, then were able to sign James Posey, Eddie House, and won a championship right away, and contended for several years.

no they wouldnt...DUNCAN had POPOVICH MANU TP AND KLEONARD AND ROBINSON...

draft is a lucky thing..TATUM was drafted to a team that was 1st seed and went to the EC FINALS..
And even with that CELTICS couldnt win so they just paid 4 players over 30 millions.
ANY TEAM in the NBA who can pay 4 players over 30 MILLIONS can be a contender ...CELTICS had PRITCHARD HAUSER and VETERAN HOFORD those are the keys..because the rest is just luck...KP choose to play for CELTICS...if you take him and D:WHITE and put them on the MAVS..THE MAVS would have won the tittle..
AND drafting DUNCAN would probably take the opportunity to draft KD..

They would have drafted Odin, not Durant, and we know what happened with him

No. Danny Ainge was set on drafting Durant had they won the ping pong balls
