Boosted Power: Can This Ford AOD Transmission Take It?

  • In the last episode of Fox Body REHAB, we bolted on our ProCharger, strapped our 1991 Mustang to the dyno, and made incredible power gains to the tune of 306 horsepower and 334 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels - great numbers by anyone’s standards.
    However, now it was time to tackle the Mustang’s Achilles heel, the Ford AOD transmission. Where most automatic transmissions will let you manually shift through the gears, the Ford AOD transmission unfortunately won’t allow you to hold its second gear position. To solve this requires the installation and use of a modified valve body, which will overcome that shortcoming and allow us to not only shift into any gear we select, but more importantly, hold it until we’re ready to shift out of it manually.
    Before we pulled the transmission though, we decided to do a little test fitting of our new wheels and big Mickey Thompson tires, which may or may not have presented us with some problems. Unlike most shops though, we here at Hemmings have Junior Nevison, and let’s say we’ve yet to see a problem that he can’t solve.

    Thanks for keeping the AOD. They work very well with a small cash outlay and a little time as shown here.

    I have a NOS set of Canfield heads that would work great on the build. Another great video with some quality mods.

    Hey Junior...I see you have a professional bandage install on your poking digit at 14:23. Here's a tip that works for me. Heat shrink. Really keeps in all together. Another great video all! Keep it up.

    That shaft that you installed doesn't eliminate lock up. The shaft you installed is just a hardened version of the original shaft. It splines into the direct drum(3rd and 4th gear) on one end and the front cover of the torque converter on the other end. It's a direct drive shaft. The input shaft that eliminates lockup is a whole different shaft.

    2 AOD's down in 4 months. I give up on overdrive transmissions. Going to c6.

    fyi, your past two videos didn't pop up on my subscription feed. A guy at work asked me if I saw the HP numbers with the procharger installed and I had to search for it. This one appeared on my subscription page with no change on my end.

    Going tangent here...what's with the tachometer? I have a one owner 93 GT that I repaired a cold solder joint on the circuit board on the back side of the gauge.

    My eyes may be deceiving me but it appears that the shift detent, or “rooster comb” was not installed into the slot on the shift valve. I did this job on the line for years. Seeing things??

    That transmission is garbage, I don’t care what you do to it. I had mine beefed up internally with better clutches and gears and it still couldn’t handle my supercharged 306. Had it rebuilt twice. Third gear gave out again last week. Good bye AOD. Hello TKX.

      It’s a trans designed for economy, it was meant for 150hp applications. They lasted plenty long when not having 3-400 hp ran through it. I’ve got an aod in my fox and it’s definitely giving me grief but it lasted about 20 years for my dad on the last rebuild so it’ll probably do just fine for me.
