I'd highly suggest The LIfe of Brian next. Michael Palin has been doing travel documentaries I believe. If you want to see some great movies he's been in, A Fish Called Wanda is amazing, which has John Cleese as well. And the Terry Giliam movies Time Bandits (he has a very small role, and John as well) and Brazil are also great. I'd also suggest watching some of the original Flying Circus shows, even just some of the highlights. So funny!

Monty Python were famous for their animated sequences, which are drawn by Terry Gilliam a co-director of this movie.

Admittedly surprised that you two had not seen this. It is the right place to start, dare say it is considered the classic of their moves. Eminently quotable from start to finish. Edit: Oh, and the knight who killed the historian was not a member of King Arthur's party. He had a real horse.

In the British artillery service, they skip over the number "five" when counting down: "six, (pause), four, three..." This is because it sounds too much like "fire" and they don't want mistakes. If yous have ever played D&D, I daresay you will have encountered an enchanter character named... "Tim."

The reason there were no credits at the end of the movie is that those responsible were sacked at the beginning oft the movie. They only horse was the one ridden by the killer of the historian.

The crazy thing is the "Do you think this scene should have been cut?" bit WAS originally cut. Eventually it was put back in for home media and now it's the only way to watch it. The first time I saw it was like, "WTF is happening?!" because I'd seen the movie around a dozen times by then.

There was also a soundtrack LP released for the movie. It was based on a radio news reporter covering the opening night of the film. He is describing the people and the theatre and such and when the first horse/coconut scene comes on the screen you can hear many people in the theatre laughing. The reporter is at a loss for words how to describe the joke over the radio. Yes, they even made fun of their own film.

I saw this move in the theater when it came out when I was 11. I had a cool older friend that had introduced me to watching Monty Python episodes on Saturdays nights at 10pm on PBS when I could talk my parents into letting me stay up late for it and I thought it was so cool! I borrowed their records from the library as well. As an American kid, I think I left the theater having understood about 30% of the movie but I loved it anyway!

  • @AlanCanon2222

I'm not surprised that the Ramblers didn't bleep out the word "Ni", the British ear is so much more used to sweary words than our delicate American ears. I am given to wonder, too, whether the Knights Who Say Ni cared about the shrubbery not being too expensive, or just not looking too expensive. Truly this is a work of art which raises more questions than it answers.

World of Warcraft actually inserted a direct reference to this by adding a near invulnerable rabbit monster in a cave on Darkmoon Island on (2012-08-28); a special zone only available the first week of the month via special portal. It's still considered an ultimate flex to have beaten the thing, and have the random luck to have a ultra-rare loot item drop... FOR A MAX OF ONE PERSON per try, no matter how many people are trying.

I always love it when Python gets intellectually dorky for comedic effect! The whole thing with the coconuts being transported by birds is just hilarious, capped off when we see Bedivere experimenting with a bird and a coconut without it being obviously pointed out. Then they do something utterly silly like the knights who say Ni and you get brain whiplash.

  • @manueldeabreu1980
    @manueldeabreu1980 3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

The coconuts were a necessity as they did not get a large budget to do this movie. IT goes to show, sometimes the best movies and gags are due to having to innovate due to lack of resources. Congrats on getting the reference in Worms. One of my favorite weapons in that game, beyond Concrete Donkey. I believe this and the other 'unofficial' Monty Python film, Time Bandits were subsidized by Beatle George Harrison.

I grew up in the 1970s/80s watching Monty Python’s Flying Circus on Sunday nights-the PBS station in Chicago showed it after their evening of British television dramas with British comedies for an hour from 10 to 11, then ending with Doctor Who. The first time they showed Holy Grail, they didn’t actually cut too much of it for content/language. All of my friends were quoting the movie the next week in junior high school.

My favorite MP film. Brilliant absurdity. Endlessly quotable by my friends and me. Don't overthink it. It"s not to be taken literally.
I also love The Meaning of Life. It's more a series of sketches, some of which land more than others, but when they land, they're terrific. And two great musical numbers. Highly recommended.

The Monty Python TV show was a loose collection of sketches that rarely had a overall storyline across the episode. A bit like Saturday Night Live. Often sketches were transitioned with just a cast member coming on screen and saying "and now for something completely different.
The King Arthur story was just the wardrobe bar to hang jokes and humor on.

Are you sure this isn't a re-release? I was surprised to see this pop up, because I was sure I had seen you two do this movie a while ago....
Per John Cleese, Palin is the most popular Python. On tv if they had.a sketch that needed a Hitler or Genghis Khan, they got Palin to do it because he was considered the most lovable. In the 2nd narrative movie, he plays Pontius Pilate. An adorable Pontius Pilate, I might add.

There's nothing like jumping into the deep end feet first, which is what you two just did with MP. This film and Life of Brian are both quite smart. King Arthur repeatedly yells "run away, run away" in part because the word "retreat" didn't enter the English language until the 1400s. "Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of elderberries" is a great insult. It relates to the sexual drive/birthing of many children by hamsters and that elderberry wine was made/consumed by the poor. The Frenchman is basically saying that King Arthur is the bastard son of a whore, impregnated by a drunk. John Cleese actually forgot his character's name and ended up saying "Tim?", which they left in. I worked in the landscape profession for 40+ years and we often, proudly referred to ourselves as Shrubers.

The "Holy Grail" can potentially only be reached after death, so the "Castle Aaarrgh" is the place to find it. The juxtaposition of the Modern Setting after the Quest begins might represent the author's sense that the strictures of modern society make impossible the genuine pursuit of such a goal, perhaps the deepest of all religious endeavors.
Anyways, it's a fun movie, and I enjoyed your reactions.

I loved the Monty Python TV series, Monty Python's Flying Circus, originally aired on the BBC around 1970. I watched it when it was imported to the US a few years later. Each episode was a collection of sketches and animations, with random plotlines and usually abrupt endings (one rule of the Python troupe was "no punchlines" so instead they often ended a sketch by dropping an anvil on the cast). I love this Holy Grail movie, which I find similar to the TV show, but I didn't like the later movies as much.

What type of comedy is Monty Python ?
It is Pythonesque - yes it was so unique that a new word entered the English language to describe it.
    Pythonesque in British English
(ˌpaɪθəˈnɛsk ) adjective. denoting a kind of humour that is absurd and unpredictable; zany; surreal. Word origin. C20: named after the British television show Monty Python's Flying Circus, first broadcast in 1969.
