The first time I got this knife almost 15 years ago, I love the simplicity, strength, and performance of this knife. From outdoor cooking to skinning and dressing game with no worries. I speared fish with it twice as a spear, adapted technique needed since it had no barbed end but it worked. The knife is permanently in my pack.
ive have 4 of the "Bushman" knives. i have one i bought directly from CS when they first started making them. These knives are tanks ive abused and beat up the oldest one and it still is like new other than its visual appearence. They are definitley worth the cost.
I have had mine for nearly two years now. I LOVE IT, it comes out of the box EXTREMELY SHARP. It holds great on spear, it throws nicely, and it works great with my ferro rod, but I use a 5" X 1/2" blank. It is a really great knife.
Use an eye bolt eye screw whatever they're called instead of a screw you need a tool with use your thumb and finger then it gives you also spot to tether it
Wow, first person I've seen having trouble batonning with that knife. Shame, as the knife is amazing. An absolute beast of a blade. The problem is the person using it. I mean, for a start, that piece of wood is on bare soil, not the best base for batonning. We all like nice (and pricey) knives, but this is the last knife you'll ever need... "Want" is a different story.
@LONE WOLF Well, you beat me. I only have three Bowie's, one for each hand and a spare. Not bad considering I hated the look of the knife initially but I gotta say, I was soon convinced it's the best end of the world knife going (at any price).
Nice mods. I think I'm gonna trim down a silicone handle grip for a bicycle to make a nice grip. I did to another round knife handle and it works and looks stock.
I have that same bushman and was lucky enough to have it when I went through SERE school. It by far surpassed the knife that was issued to me. Had no problem splitting wood when I needed it. I was really lucky enough to actually spear a deer with it. Back strap and tenderloin over a little fire doing some escape and evading, "Small victory's". If you've been there got the t-shirt you'll understand.
Awesome review... I am looking for a utility blade that I can thump on in the field and not worry about breaking, fracturing, cracking... either physically or financially. The mods you did are sensible are not difficult to do. Can you comment a bit on how the spear configuration extends its chopping capabilities? I wouldn't expect it to chop like an axe... but that additional "swing arm" from the spear extension... thats got to be a home run as a chopper... or is it? thanks
He's just saying that because he knows what all I do to my knives, and it's not a stock knife. Just like I pointed out in the sheath update video that I remembered that I DID square the spine a bit to make it strike better, because with my brand new one I couldn't do it. Lacks experience in...what? When I say "Unbiased" I mean "Not biased for it" like MY reviews are.
The knife is good, I have one of the older SK-5 models. You can also insert a stick a bit >1' long to give it more leverage when chopping. Btw, Will needs to brush up his primitive skills a bit. ;) For starters, You always cut in the direction of the growth when delimbing. You never hack into the V that is formed by the small branches and the stem, b/c this might break out the branch leaving a hole, or cause a glance and you might end up splitting a piece off the stem.
I thought of a cheap mod to address the balance of the knife. Carve a wood billet to fit the hollow of the handle, then drill a few holes down the center, melt a few fishing sinkers and pour them in to add weight.
... oh also, the reviewer was commenting on how he was "fighting" the blade handle when batoning. Could the spear configuration be used to extend the handle length and at least to some degree alleviate that kick back when thumping those logs?
+ADKMTNS Huh? Where are you buying your knives? You need to find a new place. Bushman's go for between $20.00-$25.00 just about everywhere. And yes, they are an outstanding value. It's the best knife that Cold Steel makes, in my opinion.
Also, the not bad for $20 thing is starting to bother me. What dollar amount will have to be spent to find a knife which will perform the same or better?
I was lukewarm on it, not being a fan of hollow-handled knives, but the spear feature totally sold me on it. Now that I think of it - you can always stuff it with something heavy for weight padded with something soft to prevent rattling and a cork plug to keep it in with the screw for when you don't need it as a spear.
Only problem then is that a knife you need almost all the time in a forest, but a spear you always need unexpectedly, when you don't have time to assemble this thing. So, the better option still would probably be to just carry both. I love spears.
So, You would not use the bushman as your primary knife. Can we see you do a video of you sticking your primary knife in a tree and bending it 45 deg.?
One thing I saw on Colhane's channel was he used a screw eye in the hole. The theory was that if you had to stick anything it would act like the crossguard on a boar spear and keep the critter from "running up the shaft" and hurting you.
I take this one as a mid size knife when I travel to the tropics. Not gonna use it as a throwing spear but defense spear and fishing spear sure. Most of all for easy attaching it to a long pole to cut down these stems on coconuts and other high hanging delicious fruits.
I use that or rat 7 as a backup to my bk7 which is my go to in midsized. I have an esee 6 but prefer bk7. Great for larger animal defense if you think ur being stalked and you can add spear game with it. It's a back up and supplement tool
will we be seeing this knife anytime soon? as a comparison to the newer more expensive(comparably) options? seeing videos on this blade makes me wonder why you would buy anything more(except a becker of course)?
I have the Bowie ,as a knife Collector this is one of thee best knives out there, practical ingenious onepiece. so.... what I did was ,after fitting the staff to the blade, I drilled the staff for a furniture threaded insert and use a machine screw . Reason being after a few "uses" less chance of the wood splitting .
It gets your reviewers seal of approval? What makes him an expert? He wears 20 lbs of crap on his belt and around his neck, his man-purse keeps getting in his way, he looks like he may survive an overnighter in Wal Mart. I already have 2 bushman knives and won't trade them for anything this joker may have slung around his waist. I have spent over 27 years in the Army and have gone through several survival courses and escape and evade events that this knife would have fit the bill nicely if I had it back then.
***** Dude, don't even waste the time with shoup. 27 years in the Army? I have more than a few years in the military myself, AND, I can tell you from experience, guys like this are just opinionated assholes used to disrespecting anyone they can get away with doing it to. Without their rank they are NOTHING. NO RESPECT for anyone who can't run really fast, and zero respect for civilians, no matter what they might say to your face. Now he'll come at me, with all the "don't compare with me you will lose garbage", like it means anything to sling insults or start shit on YT. Guys like this would probably "follow orders" to confiscate civilian arms just to guard their precious pension. Probably keeps his troops at work till at least 7:00 at night because he hates his wife and can't stand her,but won't get a divorce and lose half that precious pension. THAT is what guys like him are.
you people should not be judging this man on appearances, I knew a Ssgt Christianson in Okinawa had same body type but could whip your ass in a flash, could run up and down hills 10 miles without breathing very hard and all that in a tropical setting, so don't judge, watch and maybe learn unless you been there and done it, go make a video then and maybe some will come away with a different perspective. I myself am going to buy this for use as a spear seeing how a mountain lion and black bear was seen in the city so you never can tell what kind of crap is going to hit the fan or when.
Thanks for the review! I have so many knives, but always passed this one up. I may to buy one of these. The thing that sold me on it is your demonstration of the spring temper of the steel. Any knife can be strapped to a stick and thrown, but will it survive with the tip still in tact? Good job!
My only problem with that knife is the first time I took it hunting the belt loop on the seath tore off but other then that it’s done everything I’ve asked of it and it’s the best hunting camping knife I’ve bought
oh and another thing, it is an incredibly strong knife (i used to have one) but do NOT put a 12 pound 8 ft long metal pipe in the handle for spearing purposes. it will break. but that was my bad, not cold steel
I got the bowie version of this just recently because of Chris's bushman videos and went to test it out of the box. I dont have very good sharpening skills or any other equipment so Im just a noob messing around with it. I did actually use a sharpening stone on it while at the campsite but I think my technique must have screwed up the blade because after I batoned some wood the edge turned jagged in a 1 cm length and the blade bent when I batoned some cheap firewood. Im not sure if it was mentioned if this steel is made in taiwan or china. I Heard taiwan steel is good or something? Mine says it was made in china. Still a decent knife for the cost. i hope to get the right tools so I can fix the blade and maybe strip all the black off like chris. I mainly wanted the bowie cause it looks more like a spear. I hope the different blade shape doesnt make too much of a difference. Also I ordered mine off amazon and it came with a ferro rod which broke after a few uses and i couldnt even use the bushman spine to strike it, I had to use another knife to get sparks.
I'm not interested in that, I want to see what it CAN do. Few experienced people take knives straight out of the box and into the woods. I'm sure there are a few hundred other videos that do that...
I'm guessing this is the version in SK5 steel? I liked the CarbonV ones and the SK5 alike. Both very strong and tough steels. The hollow handle is nice to attach it to a long pole as a spear but even more to a really long pole to cut that high hanging fruits down. A short stick maybe to reduce vibrations in the handle whilst doing a lot of batoning. A mid size stick as a spear or to clear some brush or vegetation. Great knife as second knife and a good review as always. I do like Will. Nothing wrong with getting a second opinion on a knife. Atb from Holland
Does the physical attributes of a person change the knowledge he or she may hold? I wouldn't go to him for dietary information but bushcraft information doesn't require six pack abs or biceps the size of watermelons.
Fat is food, a little extra fat on you will save your ass. Look up the benefits of fasting, not eating for a few days regularly boosts the immune system, spikes human growth hormone, cures diabetes, and increases metabolism.
If you want to have great efficiency when you are chopping, use the retention method that applies when using the same large knife as the leukku. That is, you need to do something on the end of the handle that looks like a mushroom head and hold it with two fingers showing the tin OK. So the hand will not get tired while holding and the movement will be more abrupt. Sorry, I used the online translator))
My only criticism is the bend testing you guys did. It looks like you could have gotten injured by projectile knife bits if it did break while in the tree. Be careful.
Next video " How to treat poison ivy " I use this knife for harvesting mushrooms . Just slide it over a walking stick to reach mushrooms up in a tree .
Hi Chris, GREAT Channel!! What back pack do you use? I hear the 5.11 tactical rush 72 is good, what do you think? Again, GREAT CHANNEL!!! keep up the GOOD WORK!!!!
I'm just starting out and not really sure what I want or need/prefer in a survival/bushcraft knife.. I don't believe in spending hundreds of dollars on ONE knife... I've been following your videos and a few others, and this knife seems to be a great value. I'm also building the walking stick/survival staff you showed on another video, and also ordered the fish spear attatchement ... I did also order the Shrade SCHF9, as my main blade until I decide what other I would prefer for a main blade.. then this one will become my backup..Thanks again for taking the time to give us your opinions on these products..
Leather! All the experts say NEVER, Ever use leather, but truth is --- I like leather too! Not good when it gets wet, but it sure has a nice warm feeling about it that as lasted me on my knives for literally decades. The biggest advantage of that knife is to make a spear, that would be invaluable for self-defense and getting game once the bullets ran out.
Thanks for the demo/review... killer typhoon just blew straight through my country (Philippines) and I find myself watching product reviews on survival related gear. Kind of empty reflex I know. Tomorrow I better do something useful and get some supplies together for donating.
Viper Magnus I got to agree man it's ridiculous people care more about trees then mankind. There wouldn't be civilization without lumber. Their houses (if they live in one) have wooden frames. The lumber would've been cut from LIVE trees. A lot of circuit boards are made from paper reinforced phenolic resin (paper is made from trees). So they're being hypocritical by having products that have circuit boards. Trees can be replaced. They can be replanted. A life cannot.
+Captain “The Iron Wolf” Arminius Man is the worst invasive species to ever inhabit the Earth as he is the only animal capable of actually damaging the Earth to the point that it would no longer support the more developed life forms. Humans are reproducing at an incredible rate; the rainforest is being destroyed to support this population. Humans can too easily be replaced.
What I don't understand about tree huggers is the lack of statistics to support their point of view. In the USA replanting of forest has exceeded harvest since 1940. We have more trees now than we did 70 years ago. Maybe they should hug trees in another country to have a valid point?
I get if people don't like that guys review, that's cool, I don't agree with destroying live trees either but personally trashing a person for the way they look or what they carry is ridiculous!
and..... some generic candy bars....yeah.. by the way maggots the problem with killing live trees is having no respect for nature..if you are a survivalist you have respect for your surroundings...leave nothing but footprints behind!
anybody can go get a pathfinder shirt and pretend to know what they are talking about....but rarely do you hear any teacher say "i dont know" or I'm not sure" as often as this guy says it!
lastdollarfilms observation is how exactly i know plenty about him. And you can speak for yourself sounding like an idiot! if you knew anything about woodland survival you wouldn't be defending this weekend warrior, wannabe survivalist who is CLEARLY a city person!
Sounds like a good idea to me. We don't have many boars in Ohio though. And any critter running up my shaft is going to meet the business end of Jessica, or worse...Becky. Or REALLY worse..."________" (Don't have a name for the XD9, but maybe I should)
That doesnt make sense the big guy said he was pretty sure it was 90% all chris effort, implying that the knife by itself wouldnt perform. Then turns around and says he cant comment because of it.Make up your mind,What I see is a person who lacks experience, no offense. I operate $10 Moras,Bushmans Randalls/esse and on up 2 high end bushcraft knives. I had no issues with all 3 Bushmans Ive used from different owners at meets.Sounds like the big guy is heavily biased.4 the value, its a great deal.
When you test and review a product it should be out of box with no modifications. period. I want to see how sharp the blade comes. I want to see how well the black stays on the blade. You modified the two things i was hoping to find out from the video.
The Bushman is my primary Bushcraft knife
I just ordered one from Amazon for $25 with free 2 day shipping. It's indestructible, makes fire, and you can spear something with it. Nuff said!
ive have 4 of the "Bushman" knives. i have one i bought directly from CS when they first started making them. These knives are tanks ive abused and beat up the oldest one and it still is like new other than its visual appearence. They are definitley worth the cost.
Historically spears are the most common weapon for a reason, in a melee fight if your weapon can out reach their weapon they are in trouble.
Also, think about all the rabies you can avoid with this.
rangerband handle is the way to go with this knife.
I have one i think its the best thing since sliced bread
I have had mine for nearly two years now. I LOVE IT, it comes out of the box EXTREMELY SHARP. It holds great on spear, it throws nicely, and it works great with my ferro rod, but I use a 5" X 1/2" blank. It is a really great knife.

I have an older model with a Leather Sheath of the under belt type!! I don;t know what year/model it is!! But I like it!!
Where did you find that dude! He hasn't got a clue 😂

The bushman is in the same performance class as most knives around $100.00 Of course you can't make them into a good spear or weed wacker.
He's just saying that because he knows what all I do to my knives, and it's not a stock knife. This video is about 2 and a half years old and this blade is about $42 now, direct from the site. Still a good buy?
Depends. I gave mine to someone because I didn't use it. Makes a killer spear though.
$25 more like it. Who buys from the site anyway???
+ADKMTNS
Huh? Where are you buying your knives? You need to find a new place. Bushman's go for between $20.00-$25.00 just about everywhere. And yes, they are an outstanding value. It's the best knife that Cold Steel makes, in my opinion.
+Joel Brothers you're talking to do wrong person. He said what you're saying practically.
+Bama Woodsman
Huh? I am confused now. Oh well, even at $42,00 (US) I would still consider them an outstanding bargain for what they are.....
is the Bowie or standard best?
I just ordered the standard... Bowie is cheaper but I like the look of the standard more.
what would you guys say if I sent you a knife of mine to do a review and test to get your guys honest options
Mine was sharp as shit out of box. It's a good deal an a hard use knife.
Great knife, bad expert, the man makes the tool. Great job on the knife mods. Nothing wrong with that blade.
12:54 How NOT to limb a tree. Chop on the outside, go with the grain.
I agree
spins are easy, touch it for a few with a file and boom 90o spine
idk why this is a big deal. i expect to modify any tool i get to my specifications
How did you remove the black finish that comes on it?? I like it better without the black finish!
Also, the not bad for $20 thing is starting to bother me. What dollar amount will have to be spent to find a knife which will perform the same or better?
It's hard to tell, but it looks like it took a set after the last bend test - is that so?
I was lukewarm on it, not being a fan of hollow-handled knives, but the spear feature totally sold me on it. Now that I think of it - you can always stuff it with something heavy for weight padded with something soft to prevent rattling and a cork plug to keep it in with the screw for when you don't need it as a spear.

How is that a spear point?
Hello Chris have u tried the Gso 5.1 blade just wondering I'm always looking forward for ur reviews
Great knife, one for the shopping list. I can’t understand the unkind comments about Will, he is a great guy.
I'm guessing this is the version in SK5 steel? I liked the CarbonV ones and the SK5 alike. Both very strong and tough steels. The hollow handle is nice to attach it to a long pole as a spear but even more to a really long pole to cut that high hanging fruits down. you sould do the cold steel marauder next!
That is one out of shape bushman.
You made me laugh cx

Does the physical attributes of a person change the knowledge he or she may hold? I wouldn't go to him for dietary information but bushcraft information doesn't require six pack abs or biceps the size of watermelons.

What steel is the bushman
SK5
1080 high carbon, with a spring temper
Depends on when it's made. Older in Carbon V, Newer in SK5
I have one and like it very much.
My only criticism is the bend testing you guys did. It looks like you could have gotten injured by projectile knife bits if it did break while in the tree. Be careful.
Good secondary knife
Next video " How to treat poison ivy " I use this knife for harvesting mushrooms . Just slide it over a walking stick to reach mushrooms up in a tree .
it is hollow because it is meant to be a spear head before a utility knife...
Hi Chris, GREAT Channel!!
What back pack do you use? I hear the 5.11 tactical rush 72 is good, what do you think?
Again, GREAT CHANNEL!!! keep up the GOOD WORK!!!!
LMBO at the big guy trying to show off the Bushman. I really can’t stop laughing at him.
Personally all these tactical survivalist Rambo wannabe's on you tube just make me laugh & shake my head !
Well why dont you fuckers make some videos and show us how its done?
"Gonna have to apply some bodyweight to the handle" - Will.
This Will guy is a total amateur...
I think he ate the real bushcrafter ..........
10:13 the expert starts chopping right into the direction of his left leg right after he just bobbled the knife.
Ha...he has never handled a blade before last week? Better pack a shitload of bandages
+Brian Hanson says the guy that doesn't have the balls to post his on videos to show how an "expert" does things.

How did it skin out a hog? Looks like it would work for me
"a stick sharpened at both ends" is how I roll. Anyone know the quote?? Good Vid, Chris! I keep one of these in my car.
Derek Neumann Lord of the Flies (quote source) is a great short story.
Tomorrow I better do something useful and get some supplies together for donating.
hey Chris I just received that knife today in the mail is it an outdoor knife? :) thanks p.s. I read enjoy you're videos answer wills too! :)
damn guess lynn was right he said 50-52 degrees on that blade thanks chris good review
I keep a bushman in my car just to have it for a spear but now it pastes this guys test I sure will sleep better.
I subscribed because so many people are butthurt about someone destroying a living tree.
Ridiculous.
Adam Bull It's not a truffula tree.
PREPAREDMIND101 I had to look that up, and then I lol'd.
Maybe they should hug trees in another country to have a valid point?
bought 2007, still going strong cost £10.99p UK
I get if people don't like that guys review, that's cool, I don't agree with destroying live trees either but personally trashing a person for the way they look or what they carry is ridiculous!
compass, near a blade???
+Constantin Nicolae
Sure...for cutting a trail...... (LOL)
nice review i have the bowie and luve it
and..... some generic candy bars....yeah.. by the way maggots the problem with killing live trees is having no respect for nature..if you are a survivalist you have respect for your surroundings...leave nothing but footprints behind!
anybody can go get a pathfinder shirt and pretend to know what they are talking about....but rarely do you hear any teacher say "i dont know" or I'm not sure" as often as this guy says it!
im with u this fat loser pissed me of doin that to trees do that to allready died ones!
Give the guy a break. He needs a walking stick so he can hike his fat ass to McDonalds.
***** and you know anything about him how exactly? Oh you don't know you just decided to sound like an idiot insulting someone. Well done.
lastdollarfilms observation is how exactly i know plenty about him. And you can speak for yourself sounding like an idiot! if you knew anything about woodland survival you wouldn't be defending this weekend warrior, wannabe survivalist who is CLEARLY a city person!
The knife is still only $20 on Amazon.
Mine was $31 for the standard and the Bowie was $23
Sounds like a good idea to me. We don't have many boars in Ohio though. And any critter running up my shaft is going to meet the business end of Jessica, or worse...Becky. Or REALLY worse..."________" (Don't have a name for the XD9, but maybe I should)
That guy seems like he never handled a knife before 😂
Wills a cool guy and knows his stuff. Stop hating
+The Hidden Woodsmen Good to know Will's mom uses the internet.
これは「フクロナガサ」をベースに作られています。実際どちらも良いところがあります!
You modified the two things i was hoping to find out from the video.
that tampon comment was hilarious
+Arizona Survivalist SOMETIMES IS USEFULL FOR STARTING A FIRE !!
That blueing is so damn sexy on that knife.
2000 ibs not 2 ton, just letting yall know
So 1 ton....
war1776 that's still more than most knives
In 2023 it comes shaving sharp out of the box
Not a bad knife at all. One of my buddies swears by it.
Good going Will peace
