I'm 73 years old, and have been playing electric guitar since I was about 18. My absolute favorite guitar tone is a vintage Les Paul Junior (and now have a 1957 LP Jr.) When I heard "Mississippi Queen" I knew I'd heard the perfect tone (to my ears.) Back in the day, we didn't understand anything at all about how good tone was achieved. I was a broke-ass kid, so all the equipment I ever got was used. I got a used Epiphone Coronet, just like the one in this video. I thought it was ugly, so I traded it for a Gibson Melody Maker. Hey, I was coming up in the world! I went from an Epiphone to a - - Gibson! Yay!
Except the Melody Maker had an anemic little Strat-style single coil pickup. It never sounded any damned good. Eventually, I was able to buy a brand new Gibson Les Paul Standard with P90s. I didn't realize until many, many decades later that that Epiphone Coronet had a P90 in it! I essentially had had "my" Les Paul Junior sound right in my hands... and I let it go before I ever discovered that, because I thought the guitar looked ugly.
    Congratulations on this find, Matt!

@@elwolf8536 It's hard to imagine in the age of the internet how -poor- the flow of information was back then. There weren't even guitar magazines yet. All you had was what you learned from the people in your immediate location. For example, around that time I was offered a used Tobacco Sunburst Strat with a maple neck. I didn't buy it. Why? Because the strings buzzed. I didn't even know you could adjust things like that!
My biggest regret is the Fender Bassman head and cab I bought, probably for around $50 or so. I was psyched to have a real Fender amp. But all the Fender amps I'd seen were black. This one was brown Tolex. ...So I spray painted it black. Just shoot me, okay?? A vintage Fender Bassman in brown Tolex! Then I sold it. Hey, I'm a guitar player. This is a bass amp. I should get rid of this thing and get a real guitar amp.
Luckily, I never did sell that 1970 Gibson Les Paul Standard... and still have it today. Also, one of the cheap used amps I bought was a Hilgen, from a small amp company in New Jersey where I lived. I kept that, too. It still sounds amazing, with creamy breakup and very sweet distortion. The circuitry is all hand-wired point-to-point -- not even the "turret" system, but genuine point-to-point like boutique amps of today have.

Possibly the finest tone ever. I do love P90s on a 50s Les Paul goldtop, but that aside, I don’t think much else can compete with the tone of a 50s LP Junior (or Special). It’s the ultimate guitar tone, in my opinion. Took me years and years to figure out where that holy grail tone was coming from.

Matt, I just love the "Gibson" the owner scratched into the headstock. There's a certain irony to it: if the owner regretted the "second class citizen" connotation of the guitar being an Epiphone rather than a Gibson (a trap I fell into myself with my Coronet!) ...his way of addressing it certainly didn't up the guitar's street cred. If he'd done a perfect job and had stenciled Gibson up there, it'd only have drawn honest criticism, like, "Hey, this is bogus! The guitar ain't no Gibson! What're you tryin' to pull here??" But as it is, that scratched-in name just adds to the funk of the guitar.

    • @Colhogan06
      @Colhogan06 2 ปีที่แล้ว

That's a good point. If he was really trying to pass it off as a real Gibson he would have tried to do it in a more authentic way. I once had an old Fiat when I was stationed in Germany. In a very round about way it resembled an old BMW. The basic shape.. So I got a BMW logo, and put it on the car next to the Fiat name. I used to call it my Fiat-BMW. It got some laughs. Which is what I was looking for. Some of the older Germans didn't appreciate the humor much, but the younger ones did.

@Bobby Murphyepiphone is suffering from the legacy of old where their guitars weren't bad but weren't good either.
This mostly changed when Gibson opened their own factory in China nearly 20 years ago to have better control over quality. That was a big risk that paid off.
The probuckers certainly are the real deal in terms of paf sound it's more vintage sounding than burstbuckers which have a slightly more contemporary feel. Both are outstanding pickups. The big change was epiphone staring to use nickel silver for both covers and backplate. Epiphone even sell them for around the same price as burstbuckers. They even make custom versions like the ones used in bonamassa black beauty and slash signatures. The black beauty got stellar reviews for good reason.

I owned a Deluxe Reverb in 1966, and took a lot of flack from my bandmate who had a Twin. No one wanted the Princetons or Champs back then, and my Deluxe barely made the cut. Now I see Deluxe amps in use everywhere and people are ditching the “too loud” Twins. The desirable amps to have in the 60’s were the Twins and Bandmasters driving a Bandmaster bottom or two. We used to build knockoff bottoms with four 12’s. It’s amazing how the times have changed the desirability of the small, low-wattage practice amps that no one wanted as much in the 1960’s.

As a side note, Ace Frehley owned and played a Coronet back in the early days, I saw pictures of him with it.

Matt, Do you have a variac? I always ease up voltage and make sure I’m running old amps at intended wattage when I’m testing old stuff. Also modern power is much hotter and fluctuates. My old stuff sounds better with the power dialed in.
I’m Jelly about the Epi. I think you got one that sounds like a Jr rather than an ornery esquire.

I'd replace the electrolytic caps, have a proper 3 wire safety cord installed, get the reverb working, set the bias, clean the pots, and go from there. The amp looks like it was not heavily played, and I'll bet the tubes you have can not be improved upon. They are the same as an "NOS" purchase. If you think there's anything lacking at that point -I'd look to replace the speaker. But judge with your very good ears. Uncle Doug would be an awesome crossover video experience - let him do his magic for all of us to see. You know we're all nerding on the same utube creators........

A quick Google search produces pictures of Coronet variations with Bigsby vibratos. The hole pattern appears to perfectly line up with the screws attaching the Bigsby.
Otherwise, in addition to the scrawled Gibson name, the bridge on this guitar is either not original or someone installed, then removed a a Bigsby from this guitar.

You acquired a beauty...why...because 1st I love Princeton and yes that is a 1964- with Quam Speakers- those were made in Chicago...( that is where I am from) they still are made today in Wisconsin...and I have two Quam 12" from1964 that My Fathe-rIn-Law had in his shop...they are mint...the other reason I love this AMP is I can finally say that My Brother designed the 65 R.I Princeton Reverb in 2008 he worked as a Sr.Designer for 17.5 years and retired this year...now also I have an L.D. Heater Catalogue from When Epiphone was first bought by Gibson - it is a hard bound book...and Epiphones that were like the Gibsons Coromet and even some of the Hollow Body ES Guitars were more Expensive for the Epiphone Version than the Gibson Counter part... I had one of these with two pickups Humbuckers that was made in 1970 and it was Japan made with a Bolt on neck...I bought it in 1997 for about 250 now you can't find them for less than 800...listen to that deep sound of that amp...WOW....YOU GOT A BEAUTY and now MICHAEL CAMPBELLL got nothing on you....YOU WANT TO SEE THE REAL SOUND OF THIS AMP...RUN THE AMP - INTO THE 2 BY 12 THAT YOU HAVE ....YOU WILL BE BLOWN AWAY...i USE MY PRINCTON WITH A 2 X 10 CLOSED BACK TREMOLUX CABINET...and yes House of the Rising Sun was the first song I learned on MY Gibson Es-120T - Guitar in 1968...thanks for the lighting up my memories... - ALSO IF YOU NEED A GREAT TECH / AMP DESIGNER...MY BROTHER IS AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEER SINCE 1965 - JUST OPENED HIS SHOP IN SCOTTSDALE AZ...and as a Designer for FMIC for 17.5 years (RETIRED THIS YEAR) "he is one of the best guys for maintaining professional players amps..." ( he did EVH's stuff) he also designed EVH for 10 + years..YOU CAN find me at Facebookand you can even write me at UCN Biz Group Marketing or go direct to him and if you want his contact info...his company is K.A.R.R Amplifier & Restoration Service --- www.kaplansampservice.com/ Tell HIm Brian sent you - (His little brother)

monadyne: I was born in Inglewood, CA, raised in La Cresecenta-Glendale, I'm same age as you, 73 now. My mom took me to buy my first electric guitar, to Wallich's Music City in Hollywood(a landmark place). I had to decide between between a Gibson Melody Maker and a St. George Japanese guitar, which at the time was WAY more flashy, a lot of chrome. I fell for the St. George....stupid, stupid, stupid. I used it with my first band in hs(65-67), and the other guitarist had a Fender Jaguar and started playing better than me. We couldn't find a good bass player, so I switched to bass(had a Framus Star Bass, then Mozrite Ventures Model bass) and we played that way for three years. The other guitarist's dad was an electrical engineer, and made us both Fender Bandmasters from the schematics! They were cool! I knew a guy who worked for JBL and he got me a new JBL D-130F 15 inch speaker for.....$20.00. When I switched to bass, he got me a D-140F speaker for $50.00 and I put them both in an old used Dual Showman cab, and bought a Fender Bassman amp 100 watt for $250 new. All that stuff is gone, given or donated/traded. Hindsight is 20/20, wish I had the amps, basses. However, now I put out the $$ and have two beautiful Martins, HD7(Roger McGuinn model) and a D42, as well as a Taylor 410, and Fender American Strat. I also picked up a Harmony H22 bass that only needed a little work(they are worth about $2-3000 now), so at 73 I now have some really nice gear to play. I was like you, too influenced by the wrong things, but then who knew a LPjr or MM would end up being so desirable?

That white fuzzy stuff could be Asbestos and should probably be removed. it could have been an asbestos wire insulator.... if it's not that, then maybe some type of mold, either way you want to get rid of it and carefully.
and god damnn it how do you keep getting cool shit, ...even when it's junk it's awesome and sounds amazing.

Wow! Another very nice find! This video really helped me out. I appreciate your time and knowledge. A friend of mine stopped by my house about 2 weeks ago, and he had 3 items. A cheap guitar in bad shape with a matching little cheap amp (First Act)... and (drum roll)... a MINT CONDITION Fender Bronco Amp! He gave all the stuff to me!! I'm blown away with this amp! It's in pristine condition, and sounds amazing! It's the best sounding amp I've ever owned. It's the nicest thing a friend has ever done for me. It even looks like it has been in a smoke free environment its whole life. But, I was having a hard time dating the amp (I knew it was between 1967 to 1975) until I watched this video of yours, which prompted me to do even more research, and, I'm now pretty confident that it is a 1968. It has the built in Vibrato, which is very nice! The tubes look unused. All of the parts look mint! No rust. I haven't opened the chassis yet. But the on/off power switch (slide switch on the front) needs replaced. I'm wondering where I can get one of those switches. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you for this video! Very nice find you got there indeed! I've been a fan and subscriber for at least a couple of years now. Keep the amazing content coming!
