All I have done so far is to go Unequal Length Headers and a catback exhaust for the rumble. Once you remove the torque dip, this car is super lovely to drive. It’s so fun.
Pick up a oft tablet and tune it to stage 1, you can do it on a stock car and it will help reduce that torque dip . Once you get headers , you can increase the tune to stage 2 or 2+ ( el or uel headers ) and that will further reduce the torque dip while giving you a little more power
The amount of people that buy these and then line up at their local car meet to drag their buddy in his 5.0 mustang is just insane. Thats like buying a Mini cooper and being pissed off that It cant tow your 6500 pound trailer. These cars need twists and turns and shit to really feel what they can do. Driving in a straight line is boring as fuck anyway.
From what I've heard in videos with the new 2.4L BRZ coming, it sounds really good. Just hope that Subaru hasn't made the engine delicate (official reports is that it is NOT a turbo-removed 2.4 engine from their other vehicles, but a new design) and cause the aftermarket guys to have to update rods, pistons, gaskets, bolts, etc. etc. etc.
He knew what he was building and how he was going to build it, I like it! Should definitely invest in some slotted and drilled rotors and a bbk and at least a stage 2 clutch with a lightweight flywheel.
Installing the Edelbrock eForce supercharger kit was the best thing I ever did to my to my 2016 BRZ. Had DD Performance Research do the tuning and on the dyno I get 287 wheel HP and the car is a perfect daily driver and occasion track car. Yes, I had to go to 8" rims and do a few other mods but otherwise it's mostly stock an fine.
Nice review! The turbo noises are addictive. Still not sure why Subaru doesn't have an STI BRZ with a turbo from the factory. Im sure it would sell like hotcakes. I bet a lighter flywheel will help with heel toe shifting. Might as well upgrade the clutch too while the owner is in there.
They won't sell a factory turbo because a turbo BRZ would cannibalize sales from the WRX, and potentially from the Toyota Supra, which shares a developer with this car. A sad fact, as all anyone wants is a factory warranty on a turbo in this chassis.
@@redlion145 ^ this right here. RWD sports coupe under 3 thousand pounds with a turbo from the factory.. Its performance would be wayy to close to the WRX, shit the price of a brz Isnt too far under the WRX. Here in canada the WRX starts at 29995 while the brz starts at 27995. It would almost be in direct competition with the WRX if they actually boosted the brz from the factory.

Cheaper alternative for more fun in a brz that you plan to daily: Buy new headers with a tune and you get 25-30hp more and the torque dip is completely gone plus your car will last way longer and consume way less fuel
The stock BRZ actually has a pretty good throttle response for rev-matching. I guess the owner may have tuned it with a different map when adding the turbo.

The FRS/BRZ/86 is like the US spec S chassis all over again. Nissan kept people wanting a turbo version through its production run, but it never came. They were left to turbo their own or swap in the SR20 that the rest of the world got. The S2000 fits here too. It was awesome car, but it also left people wanting more. Just a little more.
I love it as NA, makes it more like a blank canvas. That said, hopefully the new 86 comes out still as NA but with better internals and a power bump that makes sense for a 4-cyl
You think the reason Toyota and Subaru never wanted this to be turbo is so they didn’t have competition for the sti market and eventual Supra market? Who would buy them when you could essentially get something of similar speed for much less price? Just a theory
it's designed after the old 86 Corolla. It was never meant to have tons of power. They chose to spend all the money on the chassis. And yes, 300 hp on this car will embarass and STI easily.

A boosted top-spec BRZ is literally my dream car right now. But in my case I don't think I could be bothered (or afford) to completely re-engineer the thing, so I'd be looking at one of those nice little centrifugal blower kits just to fill in the torque hole. Anything more than that and it'd be bye bye wallet or bye bye license. 😆

Honestly I haven't thought about going forced induction on my BRZ, I've thought about remaining NA and make a extra 80hp reliably. Right now though just enjoying her stock
I'd be interested to know how you plan to do that without an engine swap. BRZ owner here, and I've heard the most you can get on NA is 270 HP, and that's with an E85 tune. I could be wrong, but I have researched it fairly extensively.
@@redlion145 270hp would smash every NA FA20 record out there lol Average numbers, on the high side, for headers, drop in filter, exhaust, E85 and a tune is around 210whp. @@matthewvanzyl6158 Perhaps we're talking about two different things. I didn't give figures in terms of WHP, but rather horsepower at the crank. Your numbers may be accurate, I'd have to go and reread the threads on ft86club's website. Regardless, I think we're both in agreement that 280 HP, either at the crank or at the wheels, is outlandish without forced induction.

If there's one engine you can slap a turbo to and not worry about it, it's the BRZ. Because what Subaru did was just take the engine from a WRX, and remove the turbo. So all we're doing is putting it back in. Which honestly, Subaru and Toyota should have done themselves.
I dont know… i think the brz is naturally aspirated for a reason, the compression ratio is 13:1 stock and there’s no way to add forced induction without raising the centre of gravity and losing pace around bends as a result

Pick up a oft tablet and tune it to stage 1, you can do it on a stock car and it will help reduce that torque dip . Once you get headers , you can increase the tune to stage 2 or 2+ ( el or uel headers ) and that will further reduce the torque dip while giving you a little more power
J P yup... changes the car so much for just about $1500
The amount of people that buy these and then line up at their local car meet to drag their buddy in his 5.0 mustang is just insane. Thats like buying a Mini cooper and being pissed off that It cant tow your 6500 pound trailer. These cars need twists and turns and shit to really feel what they can do. Driving in a straight line is boring as fuck anyway.
I love this platform so much I just can’t imagine having to turbo just to hit 300hp.
ayyy the seppuku saga, my favorite off it is kamehameha
I absolutely love the noises this thing makes. They might be slow stock, but I really want to pick one up some day and build it up.
From what I've heard in videos with the new 2.4L BRZ coming, it sounds really good. Just hope that Subaru hasn't made the engine delicate (official reports is that it is NOT a turbo-removed 2.4 engine from their other vehicles, but a new design) and cause the aftermarket guys to have to update rods, pistons, gaskets, bolts, etc. etc. etc.
Super cool to see you driving on New England roads. Makes me feel less bad about Maines roads
He knew what he was building and how he was going to build it, I like it! Should definitely invest in some slotted and drilled rotors and a bbk and at least a stage 2 clutch with a lightweight flywheel.
By far the best driving commentary iv heard in a youtube video. Man knows what hes talking about and describes his experience well :)
this video sent me down a rabbit hole i dont regret
The sound of gearbox is amazingg
Sound of gearbox?
@@Addison0526 the shift sound*
Most respectable BRZ build
6:17 had me pausing the video to look for me phone 😂
I'm gonna be honest here...I looked for my phone while editing it.
This is one of the cleanest BRZ's I've ever seen
That looks like a really fun , manageable amount of power... Sounds unreal too. Good job
Always nice to see someone not abusing the hell out of other’s cars just for the video!
Haha it’s a delicate balance between expressing its abilities and not being a jerk
Everyone's talking about how great the car is, and I'm just sitting here like "I need to know where those roads are in central MA so I can take my BRZ on them" lmao.
Really though, that is a NICELY set up car! Someday I'll get mine turbo'd
i recognized the area because i live literally right where he was recording some of the roads are Bellingham Ma-Hopedale/mendon MA and all the woodsy roads are uxbridge/upton/northbridge MA area
@@massmeetsug343 You my friend are the real MVP, thank you!!
SpartanFore no prob brodie see ya in the area :)
Cheaper alternative for more fun in a brz that you plan to daily: Buy new headers with a tune and you get 25-30hp more and the torque dip is completely gone plus your car will last way longer and consume way less fuel
Yup this is what I plan on doing
You know a build is proper when they get Defi gauges color matched to the rest of the instrumentation :D
The only ones I get
The stock BRZ actually has a pretty good throttle response for rev-matching. I guess the owner may have tuned it with a different map when adding the turbo.
I’m a simple man, I see Tedward, I click
under the hood at 1:14, it looks like that car was MADE to be turbocharged. Such a beautiful clean install. Very nice. That is exactly how those cars should have came out of the factory from day one IMHO.
good vid! I have had this waiting on the watch it later playlist for like almost a year! Sorry. Time just gets away from me these days! Great vid dude!
I love the small turbo noise where it just whistles, my 9-5 does it and it's great
The FRS/BRZ/86 is like the US spec S chassis all over again. Nissan kept people wanting a turbo version through its production run, but it never came. They were left to turbo their own or swap in the SR20 that the rest of the world got. The S2000 fits here too. It was awesome car, but it also left people wanting more. Just a little more.
“cOnTiNuOuS rEcOrDiNg WiLl NoW sTaRt” 👁👄👁
Is this the Open Dump or Recirculating setup? It sounds like OD but I could be wrong. These cars are nuts boosted.
I believe its recirculated...at least that's what the mod list told me lol
Tedward ok thanks!
That really sounds like an atmospheric dump valve to me.
@@basstard13 probably hearing the intake
@@BL1THE yep, alot of subaru aftermarket intakes make that sound
I love it as NA, makes it more like a blank canvas.
That said, hopefully the new 86 comes out still as NA but with better internals and a power bump that makes sense for a 4-cyl
It's seeming like it'll be an FA24, if it keeps most of the same internals it should be amazing for boost
@@krispyywombat7382 here's to hoping it's tuned by Yamaha or something. it could be the next F20C for all we know
impreza0109 I wouldn’t go that far, but the FA24 is making good power in early tuning
@@krispyywombat7382 like i said, just being hopeful LUL
You called it!!! FA24 has no torque dip plus an extra 30lb ft of torque from 3700-7000 rpms
I agree with what you said about the high rpms being sketchy. I also find that very fun to test when it's somebody else's car
Love it, makes me miss my FR-S :( Also, again if you want to take my GT350 out just let me know.
ah sorry yes! That got lost in the shuffle. DM me or email me again because I will absolutely forgot where we left off.
Well you moved on to better things! A gt350 is an amazing car. Im too deep in the hole with my car that it would kill me to sell it :(
@@Ryan-ue9ve I originally thought they meant they were going to race lmao.
You think the reason Toyota and Subaru never wanted this to be turbo is so they didn’t have competition for the sti market and eventual Supra market? Who would buy them when you could essentially get something of similar speed for much less price? Just a theory
i think the guy who made the gt-86/frz/brz was really heavily focused on its handling and just wanted to leave it with low power
it's designed after the old 86 Corolla. It was never meant to have tons of power. They chose to spend all the money on the chassis. And yes, 300 hp on this car will embarass and STI easily.
now this is more KANSEI DORIFTO ready. Well done
I give you mad props for not making it sound like a clapped out civic
it’s cool n all but it’s still slow... you coulda bought something much better for the money of the car+build 😐 but to each their own, after owning my 16’ WRX (protuned) for 5 years, I won’t be able to part with AWD performance EVER, for daily use plus having amazing control and playfulness in the snow with “snow tires” 🤣
I’m upgrading to the next level to an RS3 this coming year.
•Inline 5 Cyl PERFECTION
•Quattro (Haldex)
•Audi Quality Interior
•Closed Deck Block

Dude, i saw that racing line. You rock dude!
I had no clue about racing lines until I started kart racing. Now I see the lines in every video lol!
I have a 2013 FRS with a GT28RS at 12.5 lbs on the lowest setting. Open wastegate dumping right below the engine. It makes such glorious noises. Clean ass car in this video. The way the 86 Twins should have been.

The sound this thing makes is just 🤤🤤🤤
That was the best GT86 driving clip
Nice camera view and mic
I really enjoyed
And i really really Love the GT86 :)
That’s the best performing and best looking and we’ll set up BRZ/FRS/86 I believe I’ve ever seen.👌🏽🔥🔥
This is one of the coolest brz I have ever seen, love the style.
Awesome POV video! I have a Turbo BRZ myself and watching this makes me feel like i'm driving it!
That turbo spools quick. Sounds good.
This is literally how I was going to run my gauges and I thought I was the only one cause I had never seen it but guess I'm not now 🤣 just boosted mine too
So many cars today speak more to owners bank account than the individual. This is more personal than another car same total sunk cost but stock..so while it kills on resale, the value is in the buiLd vs writing a big cheque and driving off the lot in an m3
You could say the same about an M3 vs a hypercar
AceCustomz not really..my thought was a dollar for dollar approximation...roughly..buy a new M3 or tune the BRZ for maybe same outlay..the M3 vs hypercar doesn’t compare on cost..am thinking would be near impossible to spend hypercar money on an M3..
@@johnaitken7430 It's not that hard when you're going to build it into a proper record beating racecar xD (idk what record you're going to beat with an M3 tho... maybe the world's ugliest racecar if you use the new one...?)

ohh god. i was about to sell my FRS and get an STI but this had me contemplate lol. what a nice build my friend. i love it
i used to want to make a 1000hp brz like those big turbo supras, but now that i think about it, this platform really dont need much power to be fun, its low power gives it its character
Class build well thought thru. I like these tuned cars..takes balls to put oneself out there as risk looking an idiot if it flops ..it’s not about winning or losing, it’s about everyone laying down their best and having fun
I’m currently working on a built motor turbo FRS.
As soon as my forged internals long block gets shipped back to me, I’ll be installing it with my turbo kit. The estimated hp numbers, with my build are 450-480hp, which will be right in line with my 450hp goal for the car. At 2800lbs, I think it’ll be a monster.
Here’s hoping 🤞
How long do you reckon the trans will last? I wouldn't be trying any hard launches...
Honestly I haven't thought about going forced induction on my BRZ, I've thought about remaining NA and make a extra 80hp reliably. Right now though just enjoying her stock
An extra 80 hp to the wheels N/a, yeah right 🤣
Yea you gotta go forged block for that...lol
I'd be interested to know how you plan to do that without an engine swap. BRZ owner here, and I've heard the most you can get on NA is 270 HP, and that's with an E85 tune. I could be wrong, but I have researched it fairly extensively.
@@redlion145 270hp would smash every NA FA20 record out there lol
Average numbers, on the high side, for headers, drop in filter, exhaust, E85 and a tune is around 210whp. There's a few outliers going up to 220whp. There are people who'll claim more, but that's on very happy dynos and in their imagination
First thing i did to my turbo brz was a oil cooler , oil catchcan and carbon fiber hood with biggest vents possible to get all the heat out
Currently in between cars RIP to my Stage 2 MK6 Golf R. I wish the brz came turbocharged
This is how the brz should come stock
OH THATS THAT GOOD SHIT!
interesting stuff you need to do a cheat code to unlock TC
BRZ owner here. There are like three traction controls. One is more of a hill/snow assist, and one is disabled by a button in the cabin, but the third is, like he said, disabled by a pedal dance. The third isn't necessary unless you are seriously tracking your car.
looks like a good amount of power for that little car
Yknow, I wasn't a big fan of all the rally cars, STIs, BRZs because of the immature drivers who drive these cars in my city. But I learned to love it, because it isn't the car, it's the driver. This video made me look into maybe owning a BRZ, and building it.
The brz is an amazing platform. Feels alot like a modern 240sx to me.
dope video man, nice meeting you
Thanks and you too. Your Sti looked awesome
What head unit is that?
Around 7:45 you made comment on the rev hang, and that’s just a common Subaru trait. They hang unless you tune it to not hang.
I'm so glad I wore headphones
Everything needs a Turbo! Just plain better!
My fav type of BRZ is the 2013 rocket bunny because it looks the best
"But it ruins the balance....wahhhhh"
A turbo is what the car needed from day one
I love the body styling of this car. this blue is noice

I always thought the old gentleman's agreement of 276hp would have been the perfect number for this car.
with all the hand movements in the into i thought he was going to land a plane!
It's definitely respectable how you don't want to explode peoples cars, but in the end its the risk they took letting someone else drive it. also. if you think thats fun you should see a focus st/rs with anything other than their stock turbo. whole different car, and i wish i was lying
BRZs and GT86s really remind me of early 2000s sportcars. Its ok in stock form, but it has super tuning potential. Look wise and power wise.
I have a built engine and an AVO billet turbo and it made 347 at the wheels on a Mustang dyno on my FRS. The scavenge pump failed (I think it was my fault), so when the new one comes in, I can't wait to drive again.
