Why Your BRZ Needs a Turbo - 300hp 2016 Subaru BRZ Series HyperBlue POV Drive (Binaural Audio)

  • The BRZ Lacks Power. It's the first thing I hear when potentials buyers dismiss it as an option because 200hp never felt strong enough for such a capable chassis. Forced induction is a quick and reasonably inexpensive way to solve the issue, but should you supercharge or turbo charge? Let's explore this JDL Turbo BRZ build to see how it suits the car.

      No, not really. It was meant to be a cheap RWD manual sports car that handled really well. But, i mean, if you want more power then just get a forced induction kit or something. Just my opinion though.

    • @JonasRosenven
      @JonasRosenven 3 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      @@jamestorrens645 I agree with you on the first part. There are good kits out there from what I've read. Many people just think that they can slap on a turbo and a little cooling and have fun. Adding substantial power to relatively low hp cars is opening a whole can of worms.

    • @Andrei-eb2du
      @Andrei-eb2du 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    • @JonasRosenven
      @JonasRosenven 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@Andrei-eb2du I live in Denmark. I believe you can increase the power output of the original engine up to +20% here. More than that and you have to register the car again as a new vehichle. There are MANY rules connected to that but as a rule of thumb you can add 150% to the cost of the original car. Phew :)

      Jonas Rosenven in Romania it's almost the same story but with a lot more communism, you have to go to an authorized garage by the police, go to the police so they will test everything with your car and it can't exceed 40% more power than stock

    I've had to upgrade my clutch, suspension, transmission mount, motor mounts, wheels/tires, injectors, brakes, and get a tune that is SPOT on. The balance from factory is art and tough to maintain with over 300whp.

      It's nice to hear from a real owner that actually did modify the power output. So many videos just show a car with boosted power but they rarely show what's really involved. Every time you add power you have to add something else too. It's never really just a case of "Slap on turbo/supercharger - get hp - enjoy". Savageese did a video some years back doing a boosted car. Adding substantial power to a car is not a shake and bake thing normal people can just do.

      It’s literally one of the best handling chassis money can buy. Power isnt everything. You can add power to this car. However you will never make an M4, Mustang, or 370Z handle like a BRZ. Yes those cars have more outright grip stock for stock but they are much heavier, bigger, and less nimble then the BRZ which ways a half ton less then some of those, has a much lower center of gravity, and more precise steering.

    LOL near the end of your video, you mentioned the jaw nailing supra. That is my 2nd toy aside from my 240 XD. 93 targa 6 speed. 6766 precision turbo through a haltech p2k that makes tons of noise until 5,500rpm and then does exactly as you described. 750whp on e85 (though I live on an island that has no e85 anymore so I haven't gotten to enjoy it much at these levels in the last 3 years sadly). going back to the miata topic, it's sad to say that even the supra has amazing visibility compared to it (it's actually great in general. round fronts tend to be better than large boxy fronts where the fenders are higher than the hoodline)
    PS: I love that you do POV driving. a HUGE breath of fresh air from thatdudeinblue who - like a bad porno - only shows closeups of his face all the time. I subscribed purely for that. anyway I never sat in the driver seat of an 86 twin.. and I was always curious but seeing the blindspots over the fenders on the one you're in now, I can tell that would drive me nuts.. these are cornering cars, you'd think they'd lower the beltline much more and allow you to view the tire positioning much more precise! Like a dodge challenger, I hate that feeling of needing to "use the force" around corners or just being forced to leave massive amounts of room on the edges of the road

    The FRS/BRZ/86 is like the US spec S chassis all over again. Nissan kept people wanting a turbo version through its production run, but it never came. They were left to turbo their own or swap in the SR20 that the rest of the world got. The S2000 fits here too. It was awesome car, but it also left people wanting more. Just a little more.

  • @the_average_canadian

    I bought a 370z over a BRZ because of the lack of power in the BRZ. It definitely seems like this turbo setup would solve the power issue, although personally I think I'd go for a Supercharger to get more linear throttle response (assuming money is no object).
    That said, I'm in love with the instant throttle response and linear power delivery of the naturally aspirated VQ37 motor in the 'Z. NA all the way.

    • @opiyumpharma5556
      @opiyumpharma5556 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the same dilemma, either a brz/86 or a 350/370. i ended up going with an 86, because i disliked the feel of the z - the ride just felt... wrong somehow. My friend has a 370z which we take out on the backroads together sometimes, and the 86 definately handles better than the 370 (dont get me wrong i still think the z is a awesome car too). He leaves me on the straights but i leave him in the corners. if it had like even just 30 50 extra HP it would turn a great car into an awesome one.
      And i totally agree, i am looking at a centrifugal or twin screw supercharger for my 86. I think they will benifit more from the supercharger than a turbo, even if it means slightly less power

But in my case I don't think I could be bothered (or afford) to completely re-engineer the thing, so I'd be looking at one of those nice little centrifugal blower kits just to fill in the torque hole. Pick up a oft tablet and tune it to stage 1, you can do it on a stock car and it will help reduce that torque dip . Once you get headers , you can increase the tune to stage 2 or 2+ ( el or uel headers ) and that will further reduce the torque dip while giving you a little more power

      They won't sell a factory turbo because a turbo BRZ would cannibalize sales from the WRX, and potentially from the Toyota Supra, which shares a developer with this car. A sad fact, as all anyone wants is a factory warranty on a turbo in this chassis.
