  • Special Thanks to @ai_design and @TeamChampagneNinjas for making this drive happen.
Learn how to operate this Unimog U500 with the 8 Speed Pre-Selector Manual Transmission.
This particular Mog originally came with a smaller single cab but was converted by Plastisol into this quad cab dump truck. Power comes from a 6.4L Inline 6 Cylinder turbo diesel making 260hp and 700 lb-ft of torque. Portal axles give it incredible ground clearance and a crawl gear ratio of 3000:1 allows this to be wildly capable in the worst conditions. To access the engine you must lift the cab (finished in Designo Platinum Metallic paint) forward using a manual hydraulic pump.

You'll have brakes regardless of air pressure. The Air pressure is what actually RELEASES the brakes so you can drive. Run your air tanks out of pressure, and the parking brake engages automatically, and doesn't manually disengage until air pressure is restored. Trick stuff.

Drive large vehicle more often, you'll get used to it. When I first got my Class A RV (35 foot Bus type RV) I was for sure scared shitless driving it, I would not drive faster then 60 mph on the highway, i always though i was going to sideswipe vehicle on to my left, and absolutely hated right hand turns thinking i would flip it on curb, but after driving for roughly 2 months you get used it and you'll start becoming more aware of our surrounding , know your vehicle limitations and develop muscle memory which makes driving large vehicle a breeze in the future. You should defiantly drive more large vehicle it will only help you to be come a more capable driver.

Felt the same on my first day as a delivery driver. Was immediately given a 2,25m wide, more than 3m high, 3000 kg box truck. The biggest kind of vehicle allowed to be driven on a normal driving license (up to 3500kg). My only experience before that were compact cars around 1000 kg. Not only did I have to adapt because I had to drive it for the rest of the day, I had to adapt quickly because there was a time schedule for each delivery as well.
You get used to it fast enough though.
Most of my days were in 'normal' sized vans like VW Transporters, which for a van are incredibly nice and car-like to drive. Definitely my favourite delivery vehicle.

it's what mercedes called Telligent system and eventually they gave up. it does not free your right hand because you still have to shift gears and it does not free your left foot as you still have to use the clutch pedal. on top of that, you constantly had to monitor your gear indicator on the dash because system used a sensor on the fifth wheel and some other inputs to calculate your load, then it chose what it thought was the most appropriate gear when you shift from neutral, so it started in any gear it wanted, which a lot of time was not right. not to mention, drivers who had to use it in offroad models, tippers and such hated it with passion as it took time to shift, so when you preselect next gear and push the clutch to shift, truck slows down and when it finally shifts, the trucks bogs down and... nightmare. some drivers who worked in shifts hated it because the clicking it made through speakers kept them awake while they were supposed to sleep. it was quite an advanced system in the 90s, but as straight automatics became better and better, semi-automatic telligent was done.

Actually preselector manual system is virtually the most common style of manual transmission controls in Europe at least past 90's. It allows multiple cascaded gearboxes yet avoid the problems of drivers needing to remember the correct sequence for each vehicle separately - just +/- lever, while maker may invent whatever combinations to get all gearing ratios they feel as most optimal for it... Yet it is mechanically quite simple - in the old days the lever just rotated a ratchet with cams, opening air valves to shifting cylinders; the air was then supplied from the clutch assist, so you may rotate the cam shaft whatever you can, only pressing the clutch provides the air to actually do the shifting. Of course, now all functions use to be electronic instead of the cams, with engine over and underspeed limit interlocks, tied to engine control to rev match to allowing quick clutch release without jerking and other similar bells and whistles.
And from that evolved the most popular automatic for heavy vehicles: The transmission control computer just has an air valve extra to control the clutch and an automatic shifting logic software...

Many old London buses had Wilson pre-selector gear boxes, the later ones (RT, RTL, RTW, RLH and RF classes) being air operated. The gear change pedal was not a clutch as such but was an operating pedal which engaged the pre-selected gear. Pressing the pedal gave a release of air followed by a clunk. These were great to drive and many now are in preservation and privately owned.

Ow yeah ! Unimog time, and with the inline 6, new ones are 4 bangers only I believe. This trans was a bit weird indeed, nowdays the automated manuals in trucks are way better, even the Volvo trucks dual clutch doesn't makes a lot of sense because it skips gears and you don't always benefit from the smooth shifting with the double clutches. Anyway this Unimog is very capable, and will go just about anywhere

Unimogs are everywhere in the European countyside. For Americans, what you need to know is that it is basically a tractor in truck form. It's a monster truck if monster trucks were actually practical.

Unimogs are very common in communal work here in germany. Its used for snow plowing, street sweeping and so on.
Not sure if this unimog has it but some unimogs can be converted to RHD by just moving the entire steering and pedal assembly to the other side.

Very cool :) You could say that the Unimog is the German Humvee, but founded in 1948. You can still see a lot of old examples in the south of Germany and Austria.
It is really not meant for road driving, although the Un in Unimog stands for Universal.
Here in The Netherlands, you have to have a truck licence to drive a Unimog, because of its max allowed weight being over 3500 kg. For the same reason, you also need a truck licence to drive a Hummer H1 here...

To get in the bed, there's normally a step built into the back flap. Drop the flap, fold the step out.
Don't put the clutch in and then select the gear to pull away - Select your gear, then clutch in. You can select and then leave it ready for you to clutch in, much easier at a red light.
When your at a dead stop, select 3rd and then the gearbox will always start in 3rd to pull away instead of 2nd where you tend to run out of revs too quick.
Don't down shift manually - Just slow it down and then downshift - It'll pick the right gear for the speed your doing.

  • @peterblackmore7560
    @peterblackmore7560 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I learnt to drive in an old post WW2 Daimler in 1967 in Australia. It had a pre-selector gear box, operated by a small lever on the steering column. So you moved the lever to the next gear that you wanted, and then quickly depressed the "clutch". They were very stately which meant that you could drive really smoothly.
Would love to drive this Unimog!!
Great POV - it really was a good driver view.
