    It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive TH-cam experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
    This time we examine a 1997 Volvo 940 Estate 2.3 LPT Celebration Automatic and discover very shiny paintwork, incorrect information about leaf springs, a very nice hazard light switch, a nostalgic glovebox catch, a hugely practical boot and really little anything of any consequence at all.... Nothing untoward, then!

    What a lovely old thing . A credit to its owner , these used to be seen in abundance back in the day .
    Has so much character and sure it'll be good for another £100k miles, it's a shame modern cars are virtually non descript nowadays

      Yes, there used to be a lot more back in the day, but there are still some around for sale. Mind you, they are starting to get a bit expensive. You are right about the character, this certainly has plenty!

    Really incredible car there is something, very special about Volvos of this age and older. Prices are getting very strong indeed nowadays, especially for near mint examples. I've always had a soft spot for the 700/900 range particularly the very early 760GLE saloons, Great review MR Lloyd.

    I had a Rover 618 Si in British Racing Green. Manual, smooth 1.8L Honda Accord engine.
    Let me down once with a Flat battery (not the cars fault). Driver electric window was always failing, fixed it 4 times and ended up the reason i part-ex'd it.
    Had 3 Rover 75's since plus other cars but still think the 600 saloon is pure class.
    You've now got me thinking of getting one as a weekend project / potential show car !

    What a nice car and in lovely condition by the looks of it. It reminds me that I once had this car's smaller cousin - a R reg V70 2.5 petrol with the rare (rear facing) seven seater option. In my experience Volvo estates are such useful vehicles you soon find friends and family asking you to haul stuff for them - some of them tending to forget however that fuel economy is not a Volvo wagon"s strong point ...

      Oh yes, sir! Very lovely condition, it shone so much that it looks as if the paint has peeling lacquer in the thumbnail picture. I would very much like to try an 850/V70, hopefully I will get to sample a bit more white block goodness soon. I agree about the fuel economy, my mother's 240 was absolutely abysmal in that respect.

    I absolutely love this. A proper Volvo. It wears its 169k very well and you can tell the owner has lavished a lot of care on it. Whenever I see a turbo car of the 90s i always hear the slightly posh, enthusiastic voice from Lotus Turbo 2 Challenge on the Amiga saying "Turbo" in my head.
    That child seat takes me back. My dad had the same in his MK1 V70 and i remember the way it sprung out.
    The colour really suits it. Emily Shields (a fellow youtuber who is Volvo daft) has a late 940 that she was wrapping to make it this colour and I could see why. The wide steel wheels give it a menacing stance too.
    Yes feel free to bring it to Scotland. I can't promise you Sherry but I have a good selection of single malts.

      Yes, production finished in early 1998. The 940 was like the 240 before it, Volvo kept making them as although the 850 came out in around 1992, they were sold in parallel for quite a while.

  • @DylRicho
    @DylRicho 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My granddad has had two of these; both manual and in dark blue. A GLE with a terribly noisy VW diesel, and the GL that he currently drives as his main car which has a much nicer petrol engine. Acres of space in the rear (992 L), pushing up to 2,130 L with the rear seats down. Insane.
    My only complaint is that while there's a lot of legroom in the rear, you don't get that much for your feet. That can become uncomfortable quite quickly, and is most likely a design fault with the seats.
    I would question how safe these are on the roads these days. It's a dilemma really. Yes, it's a huge car and it does have some strengthening beams, but it doesn't really have any of the modern safety features that you'd take for granted these days, and 90s steel isn't as tough as today's steel. Fifth Gear did a 40 mph crash test with one of these versus a Renault Modus, and the results weren't great for the Volvo at all. The driver would be left with no legs, at a minimum.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, well sir, as you well know, we don't talk about diesels on this channel... We do talk about the good old red block engine, however, one of the easiest on which to change a cambelt ever! The boot is truly vast, that capacity figure looks correct to me. I saw the Fifth Gear crash test when it was broadcast just over fifteen years ago. Yes, the 940 did NOT come off that well, sadly...

      We have had a couple of other modified cars, such as the Polo G40 an the Suzuki Ignis Sport, but this is the most obvious one due to the different wheels. It was still very similar to standard to drive, though, albeit with a firmer ride due to the lowered suspension. The clear indicator lens were standard on these later 940s.

    I'm slightly puzzled by the fuel consumption figures I see mentioned for these cars. My manual 940 Celebration (one owner) consistently does 34 mpg on the open road (mixture of motorway and cross-country), and I don't hang around. In town (which I hardly ever do), it's about 25 mpg. One feature which I don't see mentioned is the exceptional turning circle, which permits U-turns which few/no other cars can achieve. The downside of this is that it's rather easy to stall the engine at low speeds, especially if the aircon is on at the same time. Another great feature of these earlier cars is that it's possible to disconnect the battery, so you can start her easily after weeks standing idle (or connect up to a trickle charger). I'd prefer a bit of oversteer, so if anyone has tips for that I'd like to hear. I've had some improvement by tweaking tyre pressures, with less in the back than recommended, but even the amount of fuel in the tank seems to have some effect, as does heavy luggage placed well back. My current niggle is that the O/S rear passenger door handle suddenly stopped working, so I can only open it from inside. Sounds like a strip out of the interior panel, which I'm not looking forward to, as I don't want to mess up the interior. However, things have improved as I stupidly set the child lock to "on", so for a few days couldn't open the door at all! I did manage to clear the child lock using a length of wire with a hook made in the end, inserted from the outside, with almost no scratches inside the door jamb. Thank you LVC for posting these very interesting videos!

      Thank you ever so much indeed for watching! I drove a 960 on Tweed Jacket Reviews in 2019, and the turning circle was absolutely ridiculous. Maybe I was expecting it to be like that, and so I didn't even think about it when I drove the 940?

    165,718 miles. So Andy's officially able to remove the running in, please pass sticker from the rear window in another 35,000 miles then...
    I do love the stacked, twin map pockets on the back of the front seats in the later 940s, it's a very good way to add extra oddment storage to an older vehicle that was, perhaps, slightly lacking in that respect originally. Hugely practical cars and very easy to live with. Not much really goes wrong with them, just keep a spare fuel pump relay in the glove box as they do get cooked and fail out due to their position in the centre console very close to the volcanically powerful heater, and it has to be said that the automatic gearboxes weren't really the best, not really up to the standard of the engineering of the rest of the vehicle. Truly a car that you could buy now and still be driving when it's time to hang up the car keys for the last time. The values of 940s are starting to go up in the way of most rear-wheel drive Volvos, but you can still find the odd one being sold, often by elderly owners, at bargain prices and put a little work into to have a really good car, but it won't be that way for long. Don't worry about mileage, it's not important, but maintenance history is everything on these and no car worth considering should be missing that as these really are so incredibly easy to maintain...

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the red block engines are very easy to work on, one of the simplest engines to do a cambelt on according to Mr Coleman. He has worked on hundreds of them! I would have loved to have driven a four speed with overdrive manual Wentworth, but never mind, this was still brilliant.
      Not sure whether this has had a fuel pump relay replacement, Andy told me that that it has a really, really comprehensive service history, so it is probably in there somewhere. You are right, people like Mr Coleman, who could probably set up a Volvo specialist business if he wanted to, say that mileage really is not a factor if it has been properly serviced, I was expecting to see 250,000 miles or more when I arrived, so it is a low mileage car for an old 940!
