Once you have dialed in your vocal EQ and compression, it is time to add some reverb and delay. But you don't just want to slap on some reverb and call it a day. That's the fastest way to ruin your vocal sound. If you want your vocal to sound upfront, you need to be SUBTLE with your effects. In this video, I'm going to walk you through the top vocal effects and how to use them to support your vocal and create a more professional vocal sound.

Hi Colin. I played professionally in the 80s then quit to raise a family. I retired this year and wanted to get back into music but I'm having a terrible time learning DAWs. I bought an iPad Pro and a Mac Studio hoping to learn GarageBand then maybe Logic Pro but after months of watching dozens and dozens of tutorials, I pretty much gave up. Then I saw one of your videos and I'm full of hope again. I mainly want to record using my digital Piano, synths, acoustic/electric guitars and vocals mostly to lay down backing tracks for me to play/sing along. Wish GarageBand was around 50 years ago when I started!

Valuable for me was your comment that slower songs may take longer reverb/delay, and faster less so. Many artists may miss this little statement and then wonder why their songs sound wonky. You can't apply every trick to every song; that's just not appropriate. So I'm learning from your videos what's appropriate for one song may not fit the next. Q: does every song need reverb/delay? Thanks, Colin.

Great great information! I often copy the lead vocal and just drag the second track some millisecs to get a slight delay and then add some reverb and adjust the levels on everything.. I will definitely try this approach in my next project.
Top notch as usual from your side 👍👍

Thank you so much! You have really helped me get started in GarageBand; it was all so intimidating at first. I feel like I'm finally getting the hang of things.

Excellent lesson, thank you. Just started singing with GarageBand and using effects directly onto my vocal track to date. I shall try this as it looks a much better and more subtle way of enhancing vocals 👌👏👏👏

Thanks, awesome lesson on that parallel processing, Colin! A question:
Would you still do this for each vocal track when recording a project with multiple vocal tracks? (random example: maybe you have 1 distinct take for each side, and maybe another take on the center an octave lower just for style)
Would you decide which is your main vocal and create the effect tracks only from it? Or would you hold back on these effects because you already have many tracks?

Thanks for another excellent teaching. You are deeply enriching my knowledge as to how to have better audio outputs. Am sharing these tips with my musician friends who work with Logic Pro.

    That was a good vid
I like to double track my vocals i also like a slap delay
& reverb - a little verb on one side & delay the other side and give it some pan width

This was a great tutorial! One question I had was in the Vox Verb I didn't have the different settings with the different kinds of rooms. Are there different versions of Garage Band?

Very useful as usual, thanks! When you double the vocals left and right, do you use the same effects on them as on the main vocal?

    Greats as always Col 🙏
Could you maybe do a Vlog on the piano roll for making melodies for songs in garage band? As a singer I like to know exactly what notes to hit , it’s especially difficult when someone sends me a song to work on and they don’t give me a vocal melody or a guide to work with ! let alone what key the song is in or where the verse’s/chorus or bridge are lol.
If you can help that would be great 👍🏻
    Thanks again Colin 🙏

You used plugins here for both echo and reverb. Just wondered if the built in buses for echo and reverb where you set the level going in for each track and set amount in the mix and the echo and reverb settings in the master track are enough at least in some cases.

Hi, do you know why I don't have any pre-made reverb settings in space designer? Do I need to download them off somewhere?

Do you always do the whole vocal on one track rather than a track for verse, one for chorus, bridge, etc...?
