My ingenious approach to EQ has always been to just move things around randomly until it sounds a little less crappy. I think I'll switch to your approach, Colin. Thank you!
Thanks for that, has made things a lot clearer. I’m one of those guys who is baffled by ‘do this’ and ‘do that’, but once I actually UNDERSTAND why, I’m sailing.
Have to admit that i've been lousy with eq on vocals since a couple of years back. The HPF is definitely necessary and most important and i always cut there. The rest depends as you say of the song and arrangement. Tons of instrument or a small setup. I learn more from you in six month than all the time until now from when i start recording. You're simply the best 👏👏
So far the way I have approached EQ is finding a tutorial on here, and copying their settings exactly. Obviously, that doesn't work out so well. As you said, each vocal is different and requires different moves to make it sound good in the mix. Knowing these zones to look at and how they affect the sound will be really helpful. Thanks so much Colin for all the videos you put out. Have learned a ton from you.
That’s awesome, Jay! It’s a tricky balance to not just say “every source is different” or to be too specific and tell you advice that might not work on your actual source. Glad it sounds like I’m striking the balance well!
Huge likes. Thanks a million. I have been searching on TH-cam for days trying to work out why my vocals sounded so crappy. This 5 part series is absolute gold
Great vid Colin. Scanning those frequencies in the context of the mix is a vital step. The science behind EQ is fascinating too :) Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks A lot ! Your'e videos are super simple to understand with great inforation that cross trough . Thank you for helping me and a lot more creators get better and gain comfidence with grageband
Hi Colin I have a good set of ears and was amazed to see my vocal EQ was very close to how you set yours in this cool vid.I will still save this though, this will help anyone, great vid cheers!
This is a great idea! I’m considering making a 4 part series on vocal recording- room treatment, mic choice, mic placement, and recording levels and technique. 🤔
Great stuff Colin! Do you feel like different styles have different rules (for lack of better word) for what works best in regards to mixing? I feel like what works for pop may not work for metal. Would you ever do a video showing some basic ideas for different genres and how the differ from a mixing perspective?
Thanks, JT! I’d say yes and no. Generally speaking the concepts and approach for mixing is universal. There are differences but they are subtle and as influenced by preferences of the artist and mix engineer as they are the genre. I recommend realllly familiarizing yourself with your favorite mixes and using those to inform your decisions. But ultimately just trusting your ears and what you like. This is a big thing im currently teaching in my mixing course
Great video, thanks. The EQ that you make applies to the whole track or just to the selected region? If the lead singer vocals is all in one track, how can I eq different regions differently?>

Game changer- I've been dreading vocal EQ. This actually turned out to be relatively smooth & enjoyable. Great teaching, thank you!

Best video I’ve ever seen on EQ. You didn’t skip anything assuming I already understood. Thank you !!!
Awesome video. Had doubts about doing eq right in GB, and this video gives a simpler and easy way to go about it.. Thanks, Band Guy…

Would be cool if you briefly mention mic set up (i.e. vocal mic type, preamp gain, placement, distance, ect.)

Very helpful
Thank you, Michael!
Yes.
Do you do the eq for the main vocals and the harmony layers all together, or do you do each layer separately?
I'm technically challenged so I just hit the Natural vocal preset .. so can I go in and do what you're doing even though it's Pre Set? Thanks
I downloaded the thing with the dial m2 thingy. How do I see the dial. I just get a list of different variables to play woth

Do you mix & master songs ? I want to do business , I absolutely am hooked on your videos 😭⚡🙏🏾
I need to spend more time watching your videos instead of mixing Colin!
Whoa thanks Tim! But no!! Learning AND practicing are both completely necessary
YOU USED TO HAVE AMBITION AND RELIGION ‼️🗣️
