One time my neighbor rented his home without a contract/lease (whatever), so he couldn't throw her out with her in it, so he called the cops and one of them steps aside and ask him if he has any contract signed, he says no, the cop tells him to wait for her to leave the house, changed the lock and put her shit on the street, ofc he did it! I called him to let him know when she was out! Now she calls the cops because she cant get in and the cops said that she hasnt any legal right! hahahahhahahahahaha (sry for my bad grammar)

The original renter is the one who committed the actual theft. cops are like medical hospital they have triage that mean they focus on high level crime such as big scandal or homicide and then do or commit less resource to certain case that is not so life and death

There are certain laws and regulations in the rental world where it can get to a very thin line whether someone "stole" or extended rental etc.. in the eyes of the law on paper. We all know what it is, they clearly stole the vehicle at a certain point BUT the police need probable cause to make an arrest and to convict has to be beyond reasonable doubt..not because I said they stole it. In the rental world, its not so cut and dry as it seems in matters like this. Although, I agree at a certain point, the police should absolutely be taking this into their hands. In his situation, you're only looking at a week or 2 span which in their eyes is not very long. Kind of like missing persons. You cannot officially report a missing adult until after a certain time period. You cannot come after 3 phone calls not answering and ask the police to help. There is fine lines about adult rights to privacy they cannot cross etc...

Now after a few days have past it becomes something of a matter where you will actually be taken seriously but usually the way people are found in time is if they report within hours not days. But at the end of the day if the car is in sight, the owner can take it back whenever...

Great story. As a former Police Officer I can vouch for you on how a lot and probably most departments handle this type of crime. In Alabama its called Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. To pay $5000 for a stolen car that is legally in your possession extortion, which in turn is a crime. It's amazing how cops did not arrest him and given at least 2 years in jail for not only extorting but also stealing plus a fine that is equal to the market value of that car? Some people would argue for more.
