  • Today’s photo is of Clemson’s William Perry chasing down North Carolina QB Scott Stankavage in the 1981 season. Clemson, 8-0, was ranked #2 and the Tar Heels were 7-1 and ranked #8.
The 1981 contest was the first time in the history of ACC football that two of its schools clashed in a battle of top 10 teams and Clemson would win 10-8 to remain undefeated.
    Trivia Question
Most know of Jeff Bryant jumping on a lateral pass that would be ruled a fumble to secure the win. But many don’t know the other key player in that sequence that also went on to become a Board of Trustees Member at Clemson. Who was he?

Trivia Answer: With just over a minute to play and one timeout left, the Tar Heels called a screen pass to fullback Alex Burrus. Scott Stankavage threw the ball behind the line of scrimmage and when Burrus went to make the catch, Bill Smith met him, knocking the ball to the ground. Bill Smith went on to serve as a Board of Trustees Member and his son Cannon played on Clemson’s 2016 and 2018 national championship teams.
