Ben's vocals are incredible as always, but Greg Hawkes needs mentioning here as his incredible keyboard playing just makes this song! Greg's keyboard playing throughout almost all of The Cars songs through the years had a lot to do with the "sound" of the Cars. They were a unique blend of Pop, New Wave, Rock, and other styles that just worked and created one of the greatest bands of the late 70's and 80's.

He talked and sang at the same time kind of like alot of famous vocalists such as Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon and many older crooners of by gone eras. It was apparently natural for him. His vocals were extremely unique though, like no one else's. His smoothness and ability to put feeling and meaning into each word is unsurpassed in the Rock genre.
Earmuff Hugger yes, I do agree with this. Benjamin had a unique voice, style and pronunciation of words when he sang, it's lovely to hear him sing on "Stay The Night"... It's a sweet typically 80s love ballad but to me it's different from the run of the mill ballads of the time. It's become one of my fav tunes ..."Drive" being my ultimate fav 80s hit..
When I was young with that...impressionable mind, it was the early 80's...and this song was ALL OVER the airwaves. Out of many of their huge hit songs it was THIS SONG that was left behind in my mind only to bang around in there for the next thirty years or so. It still sounds fresh even today. I think that's what every musician tries to achieve- a song of lasting quality that has tremendous "staying power." Ben was...."a natural" when it came to grabbing ahold of a musical idea and transforming it into a wonderful catch-hook and ultimately, a hit song. I absolutely adore this band.
The first time I heard this was a younger brother put an 8 track tape of this in my car, and after that, I was hooked. It's such a great song on a great album.

I agree! Back then, we saved our money, bought the albums, found time to blast them when our parents were out. The Cars weren't a New Wave band but a whole phenomenon of the modern Rock era. They were in the class of "The Greatest Rock Bands Ever" with whole albums full of great songs. They incorporated the keyboard too, so did Boston, but not like this! New Wave at the time was Missing Persons. Not everyone liked them, but EVERYBODY loved The Cars.

:-)
This song reminds me of first surfing on the North side of Hawaii, & then walking
down the staircase at the Hyatt Regency, in a nice white ballroom gown. And hearing
high inspiration from Benjamin's " clear spirit voice". It gives a lot of hope, faith, &
love for people that hear this song!!
Keith: Thanks a lot for the video! It really made my day! I just got back from the outdoor October fest in Chicago! Penny
Am 50, one of my top 10 bands of all time, song structure, song writing, most underrated lead guitarist. Elliot Eastman. Awesome Group!.
One beautiful man right here. Most beautiful voice as well. RIP Ben.
No one wears Black Leather like Benjamin ! sad and shocking he isnt with us.....he would be in his 70 s and still Cool Handsome and Talented.....RIP
He'd look like Rutger Hauer still now, had he aged ..Rutger is now 75 and still a sexy European hunk...much like Benjamin was.
"The Cars" finally in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame
well it sure took them a long enough time, didn't it. I could care less about awards. Everyone who's a real fan knows that who gets awarded and who doesn't is basically a crock!!!! Might as well vote for the most popular senior in the nursing home (which is where many of us may be hanging out in the near future :)
Well overdue for sure
I miss ben , soooooooo much!!! His singing voice!!!!!! It brings me back ,, to 1979 !!!!!!! Thanks for the great videos !!!!!!!!!!! God bless you and everyone!!!!!!!!!!!
This may be my FAV Car's song. I soooooooo love Ben!!
Incredibile vocals and lyrics. Ben really knew how to express the mood of the music with his haunting vocals. Tremendous talent!
Man, I love this song
Me too
Me too!
I’ve been listening to the CARS since the ‘70’s when they were an alternative band n I’m still listening! Love my CARS!
Brilliant song from one of my fave players and voices. Miss him :(
Ben Orr, and the Cars truly rock!!!
One of the most under rated voice and band of all time !!!!!!!!! I am a metal head/guitarist.....But the CARS are one of the best to come out of the mess... Love therm !!!! ; )
Under rated? They've sold more than 23 million records. One of the most popular bands of all time, more like.
Still in awe over Ben!
My favourite cars song , this band had everything RIp Ben and Rick you're music still touches us all Rock and roll heaven boys
This is one of the great songs, period. One too many times...
