    I was almost f5'ing for your review :). Loved your shots in IG, so I wondered how you liked the handeling of this camera. What a brilliant find to use it as a feux xpan! Does this camera have a multi-aspect sensor like the gh2? Or is the 16:9 mode already cropping in on the sensor. Either way I am now off to gaffer tape my gm1 + loawa 7.5mm and put it in 16:9 mode.

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras
      @OneMonthTwoCameras  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Ahh, so glad you liked it! And yes, I should have been clearer about that - it is a true multi aspect sensor so no crop! Can't wait to see what those GM1+Loawa shots look like. Almost picked up another GM1 myself recently having sold my old one last year. So many cameras loved and lost! :P

    As a tech journalist who had access to an eye-watering stable of high-end cameras through the years, I got this as my personal "fun" camera. I was surprised how many shots from the LX3 actually ended up published in my professional work anyway. 15 years on, I still take it out for a spin now and then.

    I always wanted to start photography, but unfortunately, here in my country cameras are a little bit expensive, so after watching your videos (this one especially), you make me realize that I don't need a big and expensive camera to shoot great photos. So I did a search online and bought a cheap LX3 in perfect condition. Now I'm a huge Lumix/Leica fan and I'm in love with the dynamic black-and-white pictures as you! Thanks for sharing your experience and the settings.

    I decided to get one of these and it's become my most used camera. I don't think twice about taking it places because it's so cheap now and so small it fits in any bag or even pocket.
    I would advise other users to use the flash as much as they can, it's really good for a little point and shoot and the sensor really needs as much light as possible to really utilize the lens and produce a sharp image.

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras

    I think that extreme green white balance when shooting Dynamic B&W is part of their secret formula for that particular look. I've even taken this weird/green white balance as a guide to cool looking black and white with other cameras. This is truly an excellent and magical lens and I agree, the Dynamic B&W is a special thing. This camera is a secret weapon. And the macro factor too, just great.

    I have an LX7 that I just pulled out again. It's super fun! It's got a f1.4-2.3 lens (24-90mm), and has 1:1 aspect ratio option. Takes awesome photos, even better in some cases than my brand new Lumix zs60.

    Wow... Love your review of the LX3. I bought mine back at the end of 2008 when it came out and it’s been my “little buddy” and always with me since then. Being an active cyclist & hiker nothing beats the size and capabilities of the LX3. In a small Mountainsmith belt bag I hardly notice that it's there. I thought about retiring it back in 2012 from active duty & had it converted to color infrared for fun but that just made it a more key part of my kit.
    Even after owning it for 12 years, your review renewed my appreciation for this little camera and even made me start thinking about picking another one up for B/W work. Thanks! Cheers.

    I recently got a LX10 for a ~4000 mile road trip. Expected to use it sparingly but I used my main camera for ONE photo, the rest was with my LX10 and they were AMAZING. I didn’t realize how good point and shoots were, it felt incredible to just whip it out of my pocket and start shooting. Love it so much.

    I owned two in the years it was available. Used it a lot with the wide angle conversion lens. You get 18mm/f2.0 en flash I high sync speed. In those years I had a lot of assignments for the newspaper and often I used the LX3 for reportage style photography. This was also before the wide angle action cams, so having 18mm/f2.0 in a very compact form came in very handy!

    So thrilled to come across this as I've had a lx3 for years which got supplanted by the lx100, but the settings you have shared here for the little gem makes me want to bring it out of retirement. As an old film photographer I too have been delving into the joys of vintage digital and have played around with some old Ricoch cameras & had a D700 for a while, but for some reason wasn't taking advantage of the lx3. So many photographers are caught up in the latest and greatest but there is such great fun to be had from the older cameras. I am sure it's an inspiration for younger photographers also who might want less expensive ways to do 'real photography'. Great stuff, instasubbed & instaliked.
    Just wanted to add that recent firmware for the lx3 provides a 1:1 aspect ratio.

  • @StephenStrangways

    If you love 16:9, the LX2 is a very "pure" way of getting it: the sensor is 16:9, and the LCD monitor is 16:9, so you're making the most of the resolution of both by shooting it that way.

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras

      Would you guys know if the wide angle adapters work on the lx2?

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@longngo1098 the LX3 was designed to accept a Conversion Adapter which the lenses can then screw into. The LX2 was not.
      Some people have designed their own conversion adapters for the LX2 which pressure fit over the lens housing but risk falling off, or that attach to the tripod socket which is safer, but it requires 3D printing and/or hand molding, along with machining on a lathe, so it's not easy. You can't just go out and buy one.

    I bought an LX3 shortly after it came out and it was my daily-carry choice for years and years. I still have mine (with a couple flaky buttons) and it's one of my all-time favorites. My custom settings are very similar to yours, Dynamic B&W mode almost all the time. (The weird color tinge in the RAWs is because it actually bends the white balance to boost the contrast when converted to B&W, which was quite clever.) I never used the official wide angle adapter but your "XPan mode" is a fantastic idea that I will definitely try. Excellent review, thank you!

    A fun thing to do with the LX3 (or LX5). I happen to have an optical accessory finder for 75mm (it came free with the Voigtlander 75mm f1.8 Heliar classic when it was first released.) I pop it in the accessory shoe of the LX3 or LX5 and shoot the camera with lens set to the closest available focal length (60mm in the LX3 or around 80mm in the LX 5). Of course if you have another accessory finder for a different (wider if you prefer) focal length you can use that if you wish. It does not have to be exact - you quickly get used to any minor framing discrepancies.
    Why do I do it? Well I have two reasons. The first is I dislike using the LCD to preview and compose images - the LCD has not yet been invented that works well when shooting outside in the street where reflections and sun flare renders them almost unusable. The second ? Although these cameras are auto focus, using them this way encourages me to shoot as if they are old zone focus film cameras. I let the camera take care of all settings (all except aperture - I enjoy setting aperture to meet my own photographic needs in advance) and just bring the camera up to my eye and shoot when the so "called decisive moment" arises. Auto focus on these cameras is rapid enough that there is little or no effective delay. This makes street shooting a joy. I do not know why I feel quite so liberated when shooting this way but if I shoot with say a Sony A7s (which I have and love) I am much more inclined to feel obliged to obsess about settings and focus. Perhaps because back in the day I would often shoot this way with a Leica M and a wide angle lens with which I would zone focus, using a top mounted accessory finder just like this.

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras
      @OneMonthTwoCameras  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love this! Totally agree about the freedom of zone focusing and just capturing the moment the way we used to have to do.

    Another good wide angle converter is the old Konica-Minolta one, ACW-100. It adds 20% more field of view. Attaches with a step-up filter adapter, 49-52mm
    Edit: Sorry, that's for the LX-5 or maybe 7. My wife has one in a drawer somewhere. She never uses it and I keep forgetting which model it is. Regardless, the ACW-100 remains a good choice if you can find one, for anything that can use an appropriate filter adapter. These things never perform miracles and they weigh a lot but if you've got something that already goes wide like the 3,5,7 do the effect is maximized.

    I got one as a gift the Christmas it came out. Had a few years where I wasn't taking a lot of pics, but have revisited my photography hobby and it's always amazing to me how much you can tweak this camera. The black and white rendering is obviously a huge selling point, but I've always found it great for color flower work. The level of detail is captures in macro work is amazing and it does very well to capture colored light shining through or reflected by foliage. That being said, it DEFINITELY take some of the white balance adjustments and fixes to find what works for a given subject plus final RAW editing to really make that shine. I've also used it, a long time ago now, for pictures of friends dancing in clubs and it can capture that colored lighting with an 800 iso well enough wide open. Definitely end up with some interesting effects because of the slightly long shutter speeds, but a very unique look!

    I have the LX 2, 3, and 5. I recently grabbed my Flashpoint (Godox) mini speedlight and attached to camera and using bounce flash with it as well. When you want to keep your iso low and shape light it works out amazing. However even being a mini speedlight it's still bigger than the camera 🤣.

    Thank you SO much for taking the time to make this awesome real-world in-depth review on the LX3! :D I just bought this on OfferUp with the leather case for $30. Am absolutely blown away by the "mood" of the picture quality and the fantastic macro shots. Can't wait to take this out for more tests.
    Two quick LX3 question in the meantime! I found it convenient when being on iA mode going between landscape shots and macro shots in a short time, the auto-detect seems to do a great job. However I noticed the default picture quality seems to be JPEG and I can't find a way to change it to RAW. Is there a way at all to change JPEG to RAW on iA mode?
    Also I'm noticing I think on Macro Mode things tend to be a little fish bowl'd if your shot is a liiiiittle further that absolutely close up, so probably should switch to landscape at that point? Or maybe makes sense to just de-fish-bowl / de-warp it in Camera RAW / Lightroom etc.
    Thank you again! Just subscribed to the channel, keep up the awesome content!!

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras
      @OneMonthTwoCameras  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the note and great questions! Tragically, like many cameras in auto mode, iA mode only allows for jpeg as far as I'm aware. The closest next best thing would be P mode to open up raw capture.
      Interesting on the macro observation! I have to admit I don't use that feature much so hadn't noticed but I'm sure you're right.

    bought this camera like year ago inspired by your video:) today i found interesting thing. when i add raws to capture one they are already cropped to the size i see on screen or in jpegs, but in fact raws are slightly larger. this thing is more obvious with 16:9 ratio, after cropping to full image it become more like 17.3:9 or 16:8.3
    4:3 and 3:2 doesn’t have much information behind the crop
    can’t confirm this behaviour in lightroom, but anyways this feature is awesome to me, none of my cameras have that

    You got me into digicams and older digital cameras and I can't thank you enough. I was starting to get very disillusioned with modern cameras as most of them basically do the same thing. The endless pursuit of higher resolution, sharper images, faster autofocus and wider DR started to feel so empty and soulless, to the point I just stopped caring about photography for a while (probably was too into the tech more than making images)
    The LX3 rocketed to the top of my favorite cameras list and now I own 3 of them because I can't imagine being without one anymore. I like the renders more than my GR3 😂. Sold off my X100V because I realized I didn't need it anymore, these older cameras have more character and are way more interesting.
    Here in Japan, the Kodak FZ45 and FZ55 is popping off to the point where they're staring to sell out even on Amazon. It's quite literally a basic point and shoot with no RAW support or even color settings but the SOOC Kodak color science seems to have struck a chord within the photography crowd, it's kind of interesting. Digicam boom has been going on for a while here.
    Thank you so much again. Your positivity and enthusiasm is infectious. I rarely ever comment on videos but I really wanted to show my appreciate for what you are doing.

    Awesome pictures from this one, love the wide angle idea. I've done the same thing with my GR and adapter lens (21mm equivalent). Not sure how the multi aspect ratio sensor works? How is that not just cropping? I mean even if it's cropping it's still cool because that's how I do it and it just helps to compose with the aspect ratio in mind.
    I just picked up an lx7 for a nice deal recently. It's cmos but has some other fun changes over the previous models so it should still be fun. Love learning about all these little fun hacks and tips for these cameras! Appreciate you going over them for everyone.

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras
      @OneMonthTwoCameras  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That GRII with the wide angle adapter is fantastic! Shot a whole trip to the Grand Canyon with it before selling and it’s one of the few cameras I really wish I’d held into.
      I’m no expert but my understanding with the multi aspect ratio sensor is that it is oversized so that while it uses the portion of the sensor based on the aspect ratio selected, it’s still outputting the full resolution of the camera (in this case 10 megapixels) rather than cropping in on the resolution by way of a Lightroom style crop. It also allows you to get a bit wider on this camera so the 18mm wide angle actually becomes 16mm in 16:9 because it’s using the full width of the oversized sensor. I mean I pretend to understand it but I don’t totally. That said I love the result. Eager to hear what you think of the LX7 when it arrives!

    Thank you so much for this review and all your reviews! Your photos are beautiful and the kiddies are adorable! I was wondering if you would recommend this one or any other cameras for a beginner who is looking to get some good interview footage as well as look book/street shots? I love the raw sort of soulfulness of film but I need something that also has video, can be set on a tripod, is fairly light weight, and isn’t too difficult to upload and get a good clear image on social media. This one and that super cute Pentax stood out to me but maybe you may know of a better fit. Also, I am a brown girl..not sure if color makes a difference but just in case I thought I should mention.

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras

      I unfortunately wouldn't recommend this or the Pentax for video. What sort of budget are you working with?
      If you want something in the $150 range, you could keep an eye out for the original Sony RX100 Mark 1 which is still an amazing camera all these years later. It's small, shoots solid video and stills and gives you a lot of flexibility. It just requires a bit of manual reading to set up but then you're good to go.
      If you have a bit more budget and want a point and shoot sort of set up that has great out of camera color and doesn't require doing much to set up the camera, I would look at the Canon G7X Mark II. You can see a video I did about it a while ago on another channel - th-cam.com/video/_EUutgfd5qo/w-d-xo.html
