- Kirby's Cutter Hat is based on Chi Chi's helmet in Dragon Ball - Hammer canonically *is* just Kirby borrowing a hammer from Dedede. That's what the Pause Screen says.
Parasol Kirby doesn't deserve to be in this list: he doesn't have a hat because *if he did, he wouldn't need the parasol to block the rain and the sunlight* That's literally the purpose of a parasol
Even if it did make sense having more than a parasol would make for a very busy and just redundant design because the umbrella already takes up most of the space for a hat
@@ejfri Dang! The would look sick.. But I think sunglasses would make more sense for Light Kirby, Parasol doesn't need the extra shade, but when Kirby makes a huge flash of light, he'd need something to cover up his eyes. Kinda like metal welding.
Just a little note for beam Kirby: The connection is loose but jesters actually advised and tempered kings’ actions in the medieval ages and the little wand reminds me of an Oracle of some sort, so the jester hat could be some a mash up of a wizard and mystical adviser.
As people mentioned in the comments, I think the hammer being a gift from Dedede is a cute nod their strong friendship built up over the years. Kirby abilities don't tend to pay homage to his allies (with the exception for Adeleine with artist I think?) so I think this design should definitely stay.
honestly, thats why i love bell. the pure joy and stupidity of bashing instruments into your opponents like a toddler while dressed as one is the biggest joy you get for playing with bell
I had no idea Bubble was meant to be a shower cap! I looked at the sprites and always thought it was meant to be some kind of captain's cap, like a pirate! I still think the captain's cap idea is cooler, though knowing it's meant to be a shower cap adds a bit of charm for me.
I enjoyed both of these videos you just put out, but there's actually an in-universe explanation for why the Hammer ability is the way it is; pause screen descriptions from Triple Deluxe onwards have said that the hammer was on-loan from King Dedede, and eventually Kirby flat-out inherited the hammer from the king. Just thought I'd mention that, 'cause it's a super neat detail.
As a Frenchie, I love both the Cutter hat for it's ressemblance to Astérix's helmet (with the wings) and Beam's jester hat. Guess that's the European bias. And even if they aren't completely "fitting", it'll take those two being identifiable as "Kirby things" over "hey it's like Link from Zelda/Ness from Earthbound", because although those are cute references, they take away from Kirby's identity and just make him pass as just a parody, and with how overrused the Sword ability is, it makes Kirby feel like it's trying to use another series' popularity to make itself more popular. Also wow I completely disagree with Bubble's hat: I love the fact that it's a shower cap, it's as wacky and adorable as it should be!
Bubble's hat actually isn't a shower cap, it's specifically the little rubber/silicon caps you give to children so that shampoo won't get into their eyes! It's even more precious.
I think Sword referencing Link is fine considering the fact that Link himself is just a Peter Pan clone, who in turn draws inspiration from the classical depiction of an elf or gnome. Plus, Link doesn't even wear the hat in his most recent appearances.
The reason hammer kirby uses the same hammer as dedede is because dedede was the one who gave kirby the hammer and teached him how to use it(source: the japanese hammer pause description from triple deluxe)
YES!... The ability in Amazing Mirror predates Brawl, so that was out of the question. But for the later appearances, they could have done that, but they probably didn't want change it from the original idea and it would've looked somewhat confusing to some who haven't played Smash, or are new to the Kirby series.
Silvery: Kirby with a paint bucket on his head would be so much better, you kidding me! Also Silvery: *Kirby with a bell on his head is so uninspired.*
I have to disagree with your take on Beam, while I like the typical witch hat well enough the choice to have a less conventional jester hat to represent the ability makes it more memorable to me.
Well, in defense of the Hammer used by Hammer Kirby, there are multiple pause screens that state that it is “on loan from the King”. It’s not a duplicate design. It’s one of the King’s own hammers.
I think Mecha is like that because it's a pretty specific reference to the design language of Gundam. It has the sensor array up top, the v-fin, the backpack and weapons all carry that so it's probably why it's so over the top compared to other ability outfits
I feel like mech as a gimmicky big over the top bulky ability hat really works. Overdesigned mechs are so fun. Cutter doesn't really read cutter to me, but it does read fast. The wings on the helmet remind me of the Pegasus boots from Zelda and the swooshy fin on the top adds to that.
Cutter Kirbys hat is a petasos, a type of hat from the Greco-Roman era, it was often worn by soldiers who would weild spears usually. But it's playing on the fact that roman petasos always had a Mohawk and sometimes thw Mohawk was made from fabric other times it was the same material as the hat. The Greek God, Hermes is probably most famous for this type of hat. Shyna Nera Shyna also wears a petasos Similar hats are all over medieval cultures, like the Trojan helmet and valkyrie helmet.
Honestly? I always thought Bubble had one of the cutest hats for pretty much exactly the reason you dislike it. Looking like a shower cap gives it the vibe of just getting out of a bath. A BUBBLE bath even, y'know, like the ability. Head all sudsy, it really conveys the ability's concept very well. Plus, the wide brim almost makes it look like a blue sun hat, giving it a nice summery vibe and really making it stand out from the rest of the elemental ability hats, and for me at least, its simplicity would dare I say put it above even Poison for me. The ability itself is still a gimmicky reskin of Fire/Ice for the most part but what can you do.
Fun fact. The cutter ability is based off the fictional weapon the eye slugger from the 1967 tokusatsu series ultraseven and in the game kirby and the forgotten land the chakram upgrade is based of off the son of Ultraseven, Ultraman zero and his zero sluggers.
I actually really like Bell Kirby’s hat. Kirby wearing a bell is actually cute and I like the metallic aesthetic. To be fair bell is my favorite triple deluxe ability
For the hammer ability, it was stated in a game (I think either Triple Deluxe or Planet Robobot) that Kirby borrowed the hammer from Dedede. I think that's pretty cute
Cutter is definitely weak, but i think it'd be an easy fix, just add that face mask the cutter enemies have. Seriously, it's so common on cutter enemies to have it that it's kinda weird Kirby doesn't get that. Also, remove the eyes, it's cute, but it doesn't fit this hat. The spider hat can take them. Also, pink star on the hammer solves the problem remarkably well, and the bandana could cover more of the head and have some silver bands around the edge of the bandana to add more to the design. Missile could be an astronaut hel... Shit, okay, right, well it could be an engi.... Damnit! I guess aviators would be the play. And ball just shouldn't have a hat, some abilities just don't need them, and this is a prime example of it. But if it must, why not go beach ball atheistic? The old red and white, with Kirby becoming more beach ball colored when transformed. Well besides the risk of Marx coming in and using Kirby as a means of transportation, but that'd be funny.
Personally I'm not a fan of the bomb party hat. You can say the old one was a recolor of Sword, but it also works perfectly well considering its identical to the Poppy Bros' hats, and just looks cooler overall.
Mecha being so bulky is entirely the point, literally look at any mecha anime ever. If it was just the hate it wouldn't communicate the idea of "mecha anime" at all.
We need to have alternate hats in the mainline games. Forgotten land kinda did something like that with the ability upgrades but you couldn’t switch between the hats.
The cutter hat without the blade on it reminds me of... something. I think there was a European military uniform with A similar hat sometime near the Napoleonic era... Also, I really like the Mecha ability. It reminds me of A lot of the artwork I like to look at on Pixiv. It's pretty much pandering almost exactly to my tastes. I'm not sure if it's period appropriate for RTDL though.
One hat I hated in Return to Dreamland Deluxe was Sand Kirby. It's just the same elemental tiara once again, and it feels really copypasted from Leaf. It would've been so cool for it to be a pyramid or some Pharaoh's hat to make it more unique while still denoting sand powers
Cutter hat just resembles the cutter knight design you get the ability from. All they did was add some eyes and wings for cute points to turn it into more of a centurion cherub
I think I agree with you on the mecha hat, but not for the same reasons. I don't mind the feature density, I just feel like the design of it is a little too blocky. I get that it's supposed to be based on real figures, but something about the combination of the jetpack that juts out past the top of his head and the blocky fists just bothers me.
Cutter is 100% based on Ultraseven/Sluggers in the Ultraman series in general. Kirby grabs and throws the blades in the same way Seven throws the eye Slugger
I like how busy the mecha hat is because of the fact that the ability itself is busy. It's one of if not the most intricate abilities and I think the complexity fits
The fact that almost (are the mines coming out of the hands?) all the abilities attacks come exclusively from the busy hat is why I like it, a detail only, like weapon abilities have, but that’s cause their weapons. The hands shoot elec and fire (also maybe mines), the backpack serves as both cannons and thrusters, it’s all there, and perfectly encapsulates the usual mecha design japan loves.
I don't mind Hammer Kirby's Hammer having a Similar design to Dedede's hammer due to the fact that Hammer, aside from maybe Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Is one of the rarest abilities in the series. Making it feel more special in my opinion
cutter would make a lot more sense as a flight-based ability based on the hat. It looks like the hat you often see on depictions of mercury/hermes and the eyes make it look kinda like a bird
3:27 I honestly feel that way about the Knights helm and Sword Kirby’s Default hat. The link esque hat never really spoke to me and has been massively overrated, especially when applying your criteria to it
i should mention, artist kirby in star allies also has the screen nuke ability of paint kirby, it even removes the ability on use, just gotta guard and hold A
2:20 Dr. Slump is so underrated. (I haven't seen the show I'm talking about the manga) it's pretty simple and a bit childish at times but it's REALLY good.
I think Paint's hat may be a cap in reference to house painters not necessarily artists. House painters usually wear caps. Though I still think the bucket idea would be hilarious if it were Kirby's for this hat.
You know, my guess is that Beam's hat was originally designed for mirror, what with the two colored parts, and then they just used a palette swap for Beam because of the wand. As for Stone, they probably used the same hat as Ninja as a reference to Ninjas appearing to turn into logs, which is similar to how Kirby appears to turn into a rock.
The cutter hat is by far my least favorite hat in the game. Yellow, white, and a big ball of pink just do not work together. Not to mention the awkward shape and inclusion of eyes is weird. I also dislike whip, though I can see why someone would like it. I don't like sword either, I like the reference but it just doesn't fit with Kirby in my opinion. I think beam is fine, but I share your sentiment with wanting a wizard hat, like the one in Kirby clash.
You should look at some of the costume hats from Kirby Battle Royal and Kirby Fighters 2. There are some great ones in there and some…interesting ones.
Hammer Kirby is literally just the "can I copy your homework" meme Also I just had an amazing idea for a new hat for ball. What if they use the pinwheel hat for ball to represent a child's toy?
bubble’s hat was a SHOWER CAP?! this whole time i thought it was like a sick ass pirate hat with bubbles coming out of the top?????? my life is ruined☹️
Cutter kirbys hat is werid but always thought it was based on Kid Chi-Chi from Dragon Ball bcus she also wears a hat with a blade going through it and even uses it
I think the reason stone kirby was given the samurai hat was because of the terracotta soldiers, the somewhat famous army of 8000 stone soldiers that were buried, and also likely due to the need for a connection to ninja due to limited data... sure it isn't perfect for either but the fact they found a connection that atleast makes some sense shows they tried.
The cutter hat is designed to look like the basic enemy that gives you cutter - which itself throws sharpened boomerangs from atop its head. Saying "what about this tells you it lets kirby throw a sharpened boomerang?" is like looking at Kirby's yoshi hat in the Super Smash Brothers series and saying "what about this tells you it lets kirby extend a tongue, swallow an opponent, and poop out said oppenent in an egg?" - it's because the hat looks like the thing that does the thing the hat lets you do. Totally agree with beam, though. If it does look like an enemy that gives you the ability, it's not as common as Sir Kibble is for Cutter.
honestly i kinda like that parasol doesnt have a hat, it sets it apart and realistically why would you wear a hat and be carrying a parasol at the same time
I'm pretty sure bubble Kirby's hat is supposed to resemble a witch hat, with the "shower cap" being the brim, and the bubbles themselves being the long part
Oh my God, I loved Kirby's Bubble Hat bc I thought it was a fancy Captain's Hat (like the captain of a ship), or a musketeer's hat with bubbles on top. I can't believe that was a Shower Cap, that BLOWS!
I never knew Kirby was wearing a shower cap with Bubble. I actally wasn't sure what was on Bubble Kirby's head until now. If you were too ask me, I would say I'm not the biggest fan of Staff. The design of the hat itself jus doesn't click with me.
I remember once reading that one of the pause screen said Kirby's hammer was a gift from Dedede, so why not go all the way and give Kirby an outfit inspired by the king?
TBH, i have a theory why did they design Cutter hat this way. You see, another of Akira Toriyama character - chi chi from dragon ball Z also had a helmet like that, and i guess a winged cap is somehow connected to Arale
It took me years to realize that the hammer ability outfit with the sweatband thing is a reference towards those mochi making stuff LOL. Or maybe its just me- Also, Amazing Mirror is my first ever game too! I agree that Missle should have goggles at least or a scarf maybe but that sounds like a Jet thing too, I always see the missle boss you get the ability from to be one of my favorites in designs
Kirby with the Jester hat from his Beam ability will always be adorable to me

Cutter kirbys hat is werid but always thought it was based on Kid Chi-Chi from Dragon Ball bcus she also wears a hat with a blade going through it and even uses it
For the Hammer ability in the cancelled Kirby GCN, Hammer had an hard hat, likely referencing workers.
This is where I learn that the cutter hat is a reference to ultra seven's eyeslugger
honestly i kinda like that parasol doesnt have a hat, it sets it apart and realistically why would you wear a hat and be carrying a parasol at the same time
I'm pretty sure bubble Kirby's hat is supposed to resemble a witch hat, with the "shower cap" being the brim, and the bubbles themselves being the long part
Oh my God, I loved Kirby's Bubble Hat bc I thought it was a fancy Captain's Hat (like the captain of a ship), or a musketeer's hat with bubbles on top. I can't believe that was a Shower Cap, that BLOWS!
A Kirby-fied version of a Salvation Army hat would make sense for Bell.
Why did I literally just ask myself wtf cutter was 😂😂😂 he was right when he said no one asked this because literally no one has lol
I never knew Kirby was wearing a shower cap with Bubble. I actally wasn't sure what was on Bubble Kirby's head until now. If you were too ask me, I would say I'm not the biggest fan of Staff. The design of the hat itself jus doesn't click with me.
7:40 Kirby has used galaxia before. It's even the final weapon of kirby and the amazing mirror.
BTW Cutter's hat is a mix of Child Chi-Chi and Arale's hats
Do I love listening to Greg universe talk about Kirby hats.
The fact out of all the hats you never brought up bombs redesign is a sin.
Check out my best hats vid for how sinful I truly am
7:40 He HAS though. Meta Knight gives it to kirby for his fight against Dark Mind.
3:00 Magical Jesters are cool, though.
Cutter is a mix of chichis hat from dragon ball for the blade and arale's hat from dr slump, who makes a cameo in dragon ball, for the wings
I think being Kirby's hat it's mint to be a reference to both of the enemies waddle doo and whatever the other one is called lol
i had to stop the video at Cutter hat. The design is genius when you actually know the reference and _why_ it's so iconic.
What’s the reference little bro
I remember once reading that one of the pause screen said Kirby's hammer was a gift from Dedede, so why not go all the way and give Kirby an outfit inspired by the king?
Wait Bubble’s hat is a shower cap? I thought it was a captain’s hat. Oh.
Same here.
I always assumed that the old Stone hat was a reference to the Terracotta Army
Metal Kirby could have had the iron Kirby helm from right back at ya
Paint: he does exactly what I do.
Artist: but better
There are a lot of ones I love in this list, like Beam, Cutter, and Bell... but that’s ok :] it is a fun video!
Or maybe its just me-
Also, Amazing Mirror is my first ever game too! I agree that Missle should have goggles at least or a scarf maybe but that sounds like a Jet thing too, I always see the missle boss you get the ability from to be one of my favorites in designs
2:10 maybe its meant to be the yellow jumping wolly things (springy or something)
Jesters are often associated with magic in fantasy. The beam rod also is kinda like a jester’s scepter so it adds to the aesthetic.
Huh. I always thought the bubble hat was a Spanish Renaissance type feathery hat.
