My brother and I trekked through canyons in northern Arizona on a fox hunt, and stumbled upon a mountain lion, only saw him for a very brief moment. Still one of the coolest hunting moments of my life, to even see one! Hope my brother is lookin down from heaven seeing all the mountain lions now! Rip

I bet steve has traded most of the pleasure he gets from hunting for the grind of running Meat Eater. I bet part of him would rather be his brother Mat, hunting without the film crew and pressure, just enjoying nature. I appreciate what they sacrifice to share it with us!

I love to hunt and fish; however I seldom watch the product placement shows that are typical of the genre. I was hooked by the first episode I saw when they were unsuccessful at harvesting game. I agree with your statement. I just have the idea that Meat Eater has probably grown so much that Steven has lost the freedom he had in the early episodes. You see him hunting with Mat and I almost feel like he would trade places with him if it were not for his desire to spread his brand of conservation. No one man has done more in our lifetime to change the perception of a modern sportsman in a positive direction. I am grateful.
I used to say that but some the terrain this guy hunts is very challenging.
This episode is awesome, because it shows how professional hunting doesn’t always result in high-fence success.
I loved your description of why they use the phrase “catch a lion” instead of “kill a lion”. Having men like these out in front of any type of hunting gives me even more confidence that our sport, past time, tradition however you choose to describe it ,will carry on with what is best for the animals and their habitat making the decisions. Hunting with hounds in my eyes is one of the more ethical ways of hunting bear or lion. it gives you the opportunity to observe the animal and decide weather it is too young to kill or maybe the animal has young ones. in many many cases out here in the mountains of Idaho you may tree the same cat or same bear year after year.
First couple seasons are good but man this show has come a long way.
The fact that this show doesnt BS and finds truths in the hunt/losses makes it leaps and bounds ahead of literally ANY other hunting show I have ever seen.
Great episode!! Love when you’re able to capture what hunting truly is. You do this in basically every episode but the ones where you go home empty handed just hit different. Allows us as viewers to relate to what you’re doing and the purpose behind it. It’s real. It’s not the social media content and hunting porn that is normally out there. Keep on keepin on, Steve and crew!!

@raz issakov There’s no need to hate on someone who is bringing constructive contributions to a discussion. I get your point, but it’s not always true. Hunting with a rifle is no better or worse morally than with any other weapon that is consistently and quickly lethal. In fact, many of the hardest hunts one can do are rifle hunts.
Yes, you can sit in a blind and shoot a deer that walks in close enough for a shot, and there are definitely people who do that not really my style of hunting, but there’s nothing wrong with it per se.
That being said, one of my dreams is to do my duty and help manage the northern rockies wolf population. The most effective way to do that is with a sniper rifle. Not gonna lie, bowhunting wolves would be pretty awesome, but since it’s necessary to bring the population back to reasonable levels, it is generally important to me to choose a weapon that will allow me a higher success rate. But until I get a decent rifle (I’m a poor college kid), I’ll be out there with my bow and handgun 😂

Thank you for putting old seasons up here on TH-cam. Love the show, wish Netflix had every season. Love the heart and soul you put into every hunt. Meat or no meat you appreciate the adventure and landscape. My dream is to hunt mule deer in CO or WY. Ive been sidelined with health issues for years and 2020 has been a year of rebuilding mentally, emotionally and physically so I hope to be able to hunt whitetail soon and mule deer one day! All for hunting, but I could never hunt a mountain lion. Such a rare and majestic animal. A true beauty👍
2 weeks ago, I was hiking up into the Santa Rita's down there on a fresh layer of snow and out of the blue, a mountain lion crossed the trail 50 feet in front of me. 4 seconds later, gone. Amazing animals. I'm not sure I could ever pull the trigger on a mountain lion. I think I'd settle for tracking it successfully. That is an amazing accomplishment.
I've only encountered two lions in my life. The first one was in Southern California, and the second was in Northern Arizona. However, on both occasions they were gone in a flash, and both times I nearly pooped my drawers lol. Do not underestimate these animals because they're incredibly intelligent, agile, and extremely fast. If you're attacked chances are you will never see them coming.

I've hiked thousands of miles through their habitat in the last 40 years. I only got a glimpse of one once during a drought. When it gets very dry, the deer come down lower to feed and bring the lions with them. The cat was near a stream in a rocky canyon less than four miles from my house. Just saw its top side gliding through the bushes for a few seconds.
As someone who has never even had tge desire to hunt, this guy has changed my life. I now understand subsistence living and would LOVE to do it. To be able to know about my food these days is more important than ever. Keep making these! Hopefully I'll get my first deer in a couple months! Also only one lion sighting for my 43 years. Colorado crossing the road in front of me. Most beautiful thing I've ever seen

I saw a panther/mountain lion in the mid 90s in Alabama while hunting. It was in the Waterloo in a very remote part of the management area. It lasted maybe ten seconds but what an experience. Of course, when I reported it to the game warden "I saw a bobcat because we ain't got no mountain lions in Alabama!" until another game warden followed me out and asked exactly where and he would go look. Now I live in Tennessee and they are acknowledging we have some in wets, central part of the state.
Got that in New England. "Ain't no mountain lions here" by State Game Wardens or Biologists. Yeah, got the degree and know what one looks like and their tracks, sign etc. I know what I saw.
@@bixby9797 I’ve seen a big tan cat run across rt 110 in Crystal New Hampshire about 75 yards away called to report a sighting and was told it was probably a bobcat but it was for sure bigger than the bobcats I’ve seen and definitely the wrong color almost a lighter golden retriever colored but short haired long tail and way bigger than a retriever.

Our goats run anywhere from $200 to 1k depending, and those beautiful death machines would snatch 1 a day if they could.
Sadly alot of folks don't understand that livestock is the communities that is in care of by farmers. The more wolfs and cougars are allowed to take, the higher the cost for everyone.

I’ve seen a couple mountain lions run across the road out here in AZ at night but the craziest thing we have seen is a black leopard in the desert.. it was like seeing an alien from outer space
We had a mountain lion at one of the cattle farms I deer hunt in Southern Iowa, they run through calves like it’s nothing, they may have been pushed out many years ago but they still turn up here every so often

Lions are an amazing species. They are the only large cat species that is growing in numbers and range-they are actively dispersing east from the rockies into the black hills and all the way into the midwest. They have even been sighted in Maine. If you’re interested in mountain lion conservation, their current status, or just an interesting book, check out Path of the Puma by Jim Williams. It’s a really good read.
@@mmontan8719 sorry I don't know anything more than what I heard on the news. It does seem like a very unusual place for a mountain lion to be hanging out where it was killed in my opinion though
I remember camping out there for a week or two with some family the year before the Wallow fire came through, man that was 2011. Before the fire it was real green up in those mountains, afterwards a lot of good campgrounds including where we were at burnt and shut down, one of the best places to camp we were sad to see it go. This hunt must have taken place back in 2012 or so. Now it's been growing back a bit, we went last summer and the burn scars are still there, but theres green popping up, the place is coming back to life. Neat to see home state Arizona on here.

I love my German Shepherd, he´s my best buddy :) And it´s really fascinating to see the tight strong bond between the hunter and his dogs... Really cool
GSDs are the best dogs... I was a tiny kid and was scared of the world when I got mine when I was 10 and he was my best friend and gave me so much confidence to walk around with him because I knew he loved me and would jump in front of a bullet for me. I’m 25 now and it’s just over a year since he passed away .Treat your GSD with Love while you still can.
A little "old" , Jan. 22 now, but I like & appreciate the adage, "Catch versus kill". Many of my most memorable hunts of all species resulted in few to no sightings & no harvests. Enjoying the challenges of nature, solitude & varied animal experiences. The pursuit & learning about behaviors of the quarry are invaluable & rewarding in and of themselves.

Great video ...to the Houndsman "its all about the hounds" bareground lion hunting is the ultimate challenge for man and dog.... the hunter wants to shoot a lion the houndsman has so many other things he enjoys ... that young hound that opens up on his first lion track ... the old dog that skips out and picks up a lose ... how the hounds move that track through a bad place .. there is so much for the houndsman to like ...the process .. the hounds and being out and about on a great adventure thats bareground lion hunting and if and when you catch a lion .. well thats just icing on the cake and you might just decide to tip your hat and hope you can cut his track again .... Thanks for publishing this !
Well said! Bare ground lion hunting is badass. However, I would be careful about saying hunters care primarily about killing a lion. While that is part of the motivation-and often necessary in the case of problem animals, or justifiable as a source of meat-to simplify the whole experience to the killing of the lion removes so many of the other parts of the experience that are so meaningful.

Having trained a search and rescue K9 in Arizona. It is always mind blowing with their ability to pick up a track and how scent trails actually work with the winds and terrain. I was in NW Arizona though, where terrain was rocks and shrubs and winds were always high.
I love the explantion you provide to people who have no exposure to the sport. Ive owned my own dogs from running rabbits to pheasants, ducks, squirels, racoons, bobcat and Bear. It is wonderful to feel their love for what they are bred to do. It is also a great resourse to keep the lions in check. If you ever watch a fawn being killed by one or even worse a young lady who gets her scalp torn off then you might understand the checks and balances of predators needed.

I'm from rural Nova Scotia but do lots of hunting in NB, duck and deer mostly. I also just recently learned that Lynx are extinct on mainland NS, not sure about NB though.

Great story ! Especially about life, too many people expect to receive the trophy just because we participate in something. Success takes hard work, preparation and leg work. Those who have spent days in the field know that sometimes we end up empty handed. The knowledge that Steve received in this hunt was huge and with that he was successful !

This one is my favorite episode bc this is my home mountains. I've been all over those mountains and have only seen 2 lions. But I know they have seen me.
I hunt the Bear Wallow area every August during the 2nd archery deer hunt and to say that unit is game rich is a understatement.
This, honestly, is one of the best videos the channel's ever had. This is REAL hunting. And those 2 Arizona lion hunters are 2 of the coolest hombres you'll ever see.

I’m Scottish and went to Canada to visit family when I was 11. My Scottish uncle was an avid hunter and emigrated to Canada in the 60s. We were heading to his cabin one day when he pulled the car over and pointed out this massive mountain lion skirting the tree line. It was unbelievable the size of the thing. First time in my life I was terrified to sleep thinking this huge predator could be scratching at my window 😂

I hate that people who have no clue or idea about wildlife are always standing in the way of the true protectors and lovers of the land and animals. I've never met a hunter who didn't have the most respect, and knowledge about everything to do with their craft. But someone on twitter can tweet enough times to change laws. Idiotic
Not a huge fan of hound hunting, we have a huge problem in N.WI of bear hunters trespassing on private property. Dogs can't read no trespassing signs. Some hound hunters don't care. I personally am a solo hunter/prey type of hunter. But I try to respect that the majority aren't that way.

Three main differences between canine and feline prints, 1. Canines don't retract their claws. All cats, except the cheetah, does. That's the main difference. 2. Cat prints, usually because of size, their prints are usually larger. 3. Their fur in the paws is usually fuzzier, makes for an almost snowshoe type appearance, (for cats that live in cold climates).

I live in AZ I was staying at Fort McDowell Casino for other Arizonians, I was in one of the highest rooms, outside on the balcony, I saw a cougar stalking a group of people, I should have said something or called out lol. At the time I just thought it was so fascinating though lmao.
Floyd Green and Joe Mitchell are some of the best lion hunters in the world. My dad and brother have hunted with them multiple times. Lion hunting is tough work for sure.
My uncle in Idaho hunts bear, cougar, and bobcat with hounds. I've gone a couple bear hunts and it was the most thrilling and exciting hunt I've ever been on. I love the panhandle of Idaho its my home away from home. I gotta get my shit together and get back out there. Thanks for the great video this was incredible.

Hey Steve want to start off saying I love you’re show, I respect everything you are doing. I live in Alberta Canada been out bow hunting for white tail and mule deer, going for a rifle hunt for elk bear and both deer come November . Just watched cougar hunting and I’m sorry to say not a fan.... isn’t it like shooting fish in a barrel? I purposely took up bow hunting cause of my heritage and mainly for the challenge.
From the video it doesn't seem to be. But the final dispatching is basically shooting a cat out of a tree, it would be like trapping a coyote and dispatching it. The hard part is the days long hunt that leads to the moment of dispatching it.

His videos are very well thought out and presented in a respectable manner. As a hunter, I always disliked mountain lion hunting and probably because I thought they were so cool when I was a kid. I never really understood why people do hunt them, but after watching this there's more to it than just sending the dogs. I would never put anyone down that does participate in any style of hunting- but this video just shows a different size of "Catching a Lion." Great clip!

Look at the country, little streams that hold cutthroat trout that have evolved to survive the particular constraints of that environment, the same with the birds and other animals that live there. It's beautiful and never about the chase for one particular species. It's about finding your place as a participant in that particular ecosystem. Win or lose, if you have the right mindset, you'll never lose, just gain more experience. It's, in these places, not the destination, but the journey.
Hunting doesn’t mean killing its a hard lesson

I’m an avid hunter, but as I get older I find it harder and harder to pull the trigger. I couldn’t find it in me to pull the trigger on a big cat like a mountain lion.
