    Hey man, horticulturist here, funguses hate metal. Usually a spray with sulphur zinc copper anything like that Will take care of it. They are organic controls so all good. Specifically, Cedar rust says it requires an actual cedar nearby to continue the life cycle. So have a look at what those plants are doing..

      If you wanna reliably be able to eat those fruits then you should look for rust resistant cultivars of apple that are known to be hardy in your zone! Try a few and see what works best for your soil. You can also prune the galls out of any juniper/cedar trees/shrubs that might be around.

    When my sister was a kid she was such a picky eater. My mother got her interested in trying new things by having her help choose vegetables and greens in the garden and take care of them. When it came time to harvest she was more willing to try foods that she had helped choose, care for, and harvest. Maybe letting your boy pick out a few seed packets and a few containers to grow something to feed the family will get him to try new things. Taking ownership of little projects like that really helps. And adding them as ingredients into something they already like reinforces the willing ness to keep trying things out.

    If you're not into fungicides and want an organic treatment, try making a spray from Garlic, stinging nettle or horsetail- mixed with a little water in the blender, spray on the trees. Keeping the fallen leaves clear from the base of the tree will also help. If you have a juniper tree near by, you can get a copper spray to apply to that tree- Juniper trees aid the development of Cedar Rust. Good Luck!

    I smoked a chicken & made that sandwich a few times since watching this video. Holy hell, is it good. I grabbed lingonberry jam because my grocery store didn’t have the tart cherry. So it probably tastes a little closer to cranberry, but it’s still great.
    Also, the chicken was left to dry brine for 96 hours, and it turned out great. The week got away from me & I thought I went too long. Super moist, salt penetrated throughout. Great little natural experiment for how long to dry brine.

    As someone who has been animal free for over a decade, I really think its great and important you teach your kids where the meat you eat comes from. We are too far removed from where are food comes from and I think getting a real sense and significance of the life taken for your plate is extremely important to understand. I feel similar about the plants we eat as well, so I'm glad you shared that!

    Ok, Cedar Rust tips: you need to disrupt the life cycle of the fungus and i personally think the easiest way to do that, is to look for it on the apple trees leaves (which is where it is on apple family trees) and you need to do a hard defoliation of all the leaves infected. If you have a big apple tree, this will be gruesome BUT not as gruesome as trying to find the galls on all the cedar trees. If you take down all the trees that are in the apple family, except your production trees, than you have only a few trees to watch and to defoliate. If those production trees are smaller, than this isn't to bad of a job but it will weaken the trees for that season. After the first year doing this, the second year you hopefully see less effected leaves. Keep defoliating (the infected leaves only), every year until it either goes away or it persists just as bad every year. if you don't see a difference, than give up and look for rust resistant strains of apples and live with the infection.

  • @impudentearworm
    @impudentearworm ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Re: cedar apple rust: call a licensed/insured tree-care company that can provide spraying services. You need something with Myclobutanil in it, which you usually can't get as a homeowner. Spray timing is usually earlier in the year. I can truthfully say, there's a time and place for chemicals - the copper/sulfide sprays don't work as well and yes, they're organic, but they're not necessarily non-toxic. The really big thing, as others have mentioned, is also treat nearby cedars and junipers, AND: if you're pruning at all at any point, tools need to be disinfected between cuts. Good luck, hope this helps! And thanks for the videos, they are such a boost.

    Obsessed with Brad not sending the kids in with nuts but puts a peanut butter bar in the box 😂

    • @JaySay
      @JaySay 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As someone with a fairly mild peanut & tree nut allergy, (very weirdly specific, I won't go into details) at least to me, nuts themselves would pose a bigger "risk" of cross contaminating another kids lunch or the tables because of how many loose ones you'll have, the residue can travel a lot quicker than with peanut butter, etc...
      I know in the grand scheme of it all with kids and how they eat, it doesn't really matter, because kids can and will do anything with food... But when it comes to peanut (or other food) allergies, if a kid has one and those parents know about it, the most important thing to drill into that kid is to not just grab and/or eat any food. You can't always account for what foods 100+ other kids will potentially bring into school, but you can do the best you can at instilling the mindset of being cautious of what food you personally eat.
      That's my take on it, at least. I know some schools are very cautious of what foods their kids bring in, and I fully agree with them if they choose to have a ban on those foods. Kids will do anything with everything; you can't predict what could happen with them.🤷‍♂️
