- What's the best bang for your buck right now, new or used? We've got ten cars you can buy that are a great value for the most fun and performance. 5 used cars, 5 new cars. Spoiler alert: the answer is not Miata. We'll explain why.
Plus, Matt talks about the all new Porsche Panamera's crazy dancing suspension and what it means for speed; we also discuss that Cyber Truck's steering/brake failure; the least-green cars of the year (one is an EV!); the flaws of "self-driving" companies; and what's wrong with the Mercedes SL43 AMG we have in the driveway.
Q&A questions include:
Is a Chevy Volt a good highway commuter
What to get after owning a Skyline R32 GT-R
To buy a used or new Elantra N?
What we think of slant nose Porsches
Morgan Super 3 vs Caterham

They are really running thin on topics if the show has become an hour of Tesla bashing and a random Top 5 list
It would be an interesting solution to solving the “what type of driver do we need” by having different driving styles that’re geofenced by GPS instead of trying to have one set of logic that covers everything
God bless you
Thaaaaank you
They talked about Tesla for maybe 20 minutes. @@FVPS904
Please, please don't give up your skepticism. I truly think you two can make a difference.
Just as a heads up the 100,000 mile warranties on new Hyundai and Kia are only for the first owner. It goes back down to a 60,000 if I remember correctly for the second owner.
Unless you get a CPO. Then the 10yr-100k carries over.
Love the crew shows. That is a FIRE sweater, Zack.
Driving a super efficient car most of the time and hooning it all the other time does make a lot of sense to me but I do a lot of miles.
People hating on Matt for being realistic of unrealistic cars for 99x of an Americans needs is silly, he is right
Small and light is way more fun and environmentally friendly even if it's not the most efficient ICE. Miata is once again the answer. Although, I have my eye on an Aptera as an alternative that might be fun driving to work. Large truck or SUV for the times when you need room for passengers or large objects.
I fee like a GR Corolla would be even better as its also a hatchback @@thisisme379

Had to weigh in on the Hyundai warranty topic (Elantra N with warranty left on it)....a COMMON misconception in the car biz is that Kia / Hyundai 10 yr 100k warranty transfers to second owners. IT DOES NOT. Only the original owners of these cars when bought new can enjoy that 10 yr 100k warranty.
There CPO does tho, atm trying to get a Tucson/santafe PHEV 2022 under 25k to get the fed tax credit, 21k pretty ok suv and the 100k worry free lol
Another common misconception is that Hyundai/Kia have a 10-year full warranty. Only the powertrain is 10 years - regular warranty is 5 year (vs 3 - 4 years for most).
Still a great warranty, but somehow Hyundai got people to compare their powertain warranty to others regular warranty. Many OEMs have powertrain and rust warranties that extend beyond usual 3 - 4 years.
@@GoPotato69don't forget that all PHEVs have a federally-mandated 8 year/100K warranty on the battery and electric drivetrain 👍
@@The_Stanman thx lol, looking at all phevs or evs under 25k too, 2019 etron suv, outlander phev, and even panamera/cayenne 2016 ehybrids
@@The_Stanman the Porsche ehybrids r really tempting bc the motor is pretty well known to be decently reliable in most audi models , so just worried ab 8yr old air suspension and batt
Aye, another crew show with the boys. Its going to be a good day
I’ve been traveling, out of the country, not a lot of wifi, so happy to be back and get caught up on these
If all the Billions and Billion$ wasted on self-driving had been spent on batteries, renewable fuels or just charging points I think the world would be a far more advanced place.
I love these new “themed” shows. Gives a bit of structure and set expectations, and is well executed. Still watching every minute, even after all these years!
Totally agree on the 987 gen - bought a '05 Boxster with a stick and 65k miles for 15k, and this is most well rounded, bang-for-your-back sports car you can get(if you are brave, you can even take your chances on not fixing the IMS)
Agreed - don’t waste money on IMS - I spoke to several Porsche specialists about replacing it on my 986S and none of them had seen a failure in a decade. Seems if the car made it thru 50k miles or 10yrs then it wasn’t fitted with one of the bad ones at the factory.
94-98 Cobras are fun cars. Biggest upgrade over Fox is rear discs and 5 lug wheels. 94-95s have the finicky EEC-V computer and A LOT of torque reduction built into them that not too many people still tune for. 96-98 DOHCs are a set of 4.10s and a midpipe away from 12s, dyno tunes for some more midrange torque. Steeda offers suspension pacakges on par with MM for less.
Also Skyline GTRs for cars with Turbo w/ ITB
In today's episode of TheShitonTesla Podcast, Matt proves himself correct that a Cybertruck would need a repair.
when a computer failure turns you into a passenger in your own car with no steering or brakes its warranted
The 2002 WRX was $24,000 when it came out. The 2.5RS was ~$19k.
I agree with Matt on the current landscape of AV. But just wanted to point out that non of the automakers or any company working on their testing and dataset and data collected are sharing the data. So the miles driven are all different for different companies. Not counting Uber since their program has ended.
I just got a clean MK1 Audi TT 225hp quattro 6spd in the $10k range; it's not dynamically the best (transverse engine with Haldex, ehh) but it looks great, is quick with room to go quicker, makes fun turbo noises and offers AWD for four season fun.
Good to see the guys back, to fill the time I listened to a few episodes of Carmudgeon Podcast in my opinion it's a little mundane and "in the weeds" compared to TST.
The regular e46 3 series is still, today, the benchmark for how a sport sedan/coupe does ride quality + handling + steering. The ultra smooth inline 6 is a bonus.
new gr86 or rally yaris is a better drive and investment than an old boxster
I almost bought a Chevy Volt based on Matt raving about how great it is. Had it for a week and couldn't have been happier to send it back. Hated how it drove(lethargic and slow) and the terrible visibility and the cargo capacity wasn't quite enough. I was genuinely way happier with my old Chevy Aveo that had amazing visibility, was fun to chuck around corners, got ok mpg and was dirt cheap to repair. I like Matt but I think he's a bit disconnected on what normal people enjoy in a car.
Because he’s wealthy, his taste In vehicles is expensive as hell everytime
SN95 cobra has to be the 5.0 version for sure. Also Matts R32 Skyline had turbos and ITBs.
Seville is one amazing country. In my opinion Granada and Seville are the most viby cities in Spain. As you said, amazing people, amazing food, well dressed people. Highly suggested. Also, amazing driving roads in Spain, even in the so called B roads
Former e46 330ci owner but now am on my second n54 335i. The 335i is a monster in comparison and with simple bolt ons will have nearly 500hp for $12k all day long. The real bargain in my opinion is the n54 as long as you can afford to maintain it well.
What year(s) is an "n54" 335i?
Up till 09 unless it’s a “335is” and then I think it’s 2013 for those.
I’m stuck between a C63 AMG w204 and a s197 mustang GT. Both priced about the same 20-25k. I’m a gear head so I can work on both. Cam adjusters scare me on the w204 otherwise seems bullet proof. No manual makes me question. The s197 I love but they’re kind of simple in comparison.
Mustang for sure. Cheaper parts. Lots of information in them. Good aftermarket support. My brother has a mercades and well it's for sale lol
13-14 GTs are peak bang for buck.
@@JR10_RR yeah they’re mean too.. I’m not doing anything until fall so fingers crossed the market on them is still good. Project over winter ready for spring 🙏
Mercedes parts aren’t absurdly expensive, but modern Mercedes are *incredibly* annoying to work on. Just saying.
Just got my first 911. A 996.2 C4 coupe tiptronic. Yes the cheapest but it’s just had a full engine rebuild at a cost of £10.5k. The same I paid for it. The future of manual classics? There’ll be much fewer drivers that can drive manual. Is an auto a better long term “investment “?
Great range of topics. Good to be informed across the entire spectrum.
Please get Gary Marcus on the show!
I will catch myself thinking about my emissions occassionally but this has put that to rest. My E30 is 1.8 and Accord is a K24 with two catalytic converters. My worst car is the Rover SD1 but that is not only a puny 3.5 V8, but doesn't even run so any emissions at all would be a nice change.
This SL43 super comes off as just a bridge powertrain to something that should really be electric but it isn't viable yet.
The sl43 is the closest Mercedes has been to making an actual sl in a while. The original 300sl was all about lightness hence the designation 'super light's. It was never supposed to be a comfortable S class roadster. The S in sl has nothing to with the s class which is what Matt wants it to be.
The original sl300 gullwing with 6 cylinder was followed by a 4 cylinder 1.9 sl roadster. And the new sl is sort of a similar recipe, the amg gt based roadster cut down to a 4 cylinder.
Somewhere down the line Mercedes completely lost its legacy due to financial crisis and budget cuts. What was once their flagship sports car became a grand tourer. Maybe this is return to its origin but they still need to make it stand up to its name the 'SL' and 3900 pounds is not super light.
I have a 991.2 Carrera T, some mods, totally rips in the canyons, but I’m always side eyeing C5 Z06, they really are great cars that are easy enough to maintain yourself and no problem to beat on like a red headed step child. Also, 100% agree the SN95 is highly undervalued. It’s an improved Fox chassis, with more reinforcement in areas prone to failure that need reinforcement on Fox Body. SN95 Cobra R is also super cool and has a 5.8L that easily strokes out to some big displacement. Please stop talking about these lol, last good value cars out there and y’all blowin em up.
12:25 Tesla bashing begins
Need the end timestamp 🙄
a 30 year old mustang for 13k is not cheap. 30 year old vehicles are 5k-10k market tops, remember the car is old enough to be vantage but plastic enough to not be collectable.
i had 2 brand new company provided e46 bmws back in the day, they were riddled with problems when new. anyone paying 10k for them now is an idiot looking to throw money away.
It would be an interesting solution to solving the “what type of driver do we need” by having different driving styles that’re geofenced by GPS instead of trying to have one set of logic that covers everything
Loving Zach’s Heel & Toe shirt
Making perfect automation seems like a good idea until we end up with a sentient AI that takes control. I sound like a crazy person, but if we stop and think about the implications of these technologies and AI, maybe we should all sound a bit more crazy?
Missed opportunity: brand new US Legends spec race car. Not road legal, but gets you into a track ready racing car for $20k!!! And, it fits in the long bed of an F-250!!! Didn’t these boys drive that car recently?
Interesting, France had far worse tarmac than Switzerland 😁... I know extreme example but it felt like night and day but yeah in Cannes/Nice it felt like stepping back a few centuries with how the tarmac was. Italy almost had better tarmac so I'm curious about Spain, never visited.
Curious about this in particular because old Peugeots were hot but had soft suspension because France's B-roads weren't paved well and as a result they sold legendarily well in Greece and the UK which don't have great tarmac at all, especially in their B-roads.
Hey guys, hyundai warranty drastically reduces for second owner. Like cuts in half. Only original owner gets that 100k
They also don't sell many of those halo trucks... It's pennies on the dollar vs the majority of truck sales
Matt san
They actually have software for full self driving, thats very safe. But the down side is, the car never goes, unless its absolutely sure its safe,
The software has to have risk programmed into it, just like us as humans, we have to inherit some risk, to drive on public roads, like running a yellow light, or not stopping fully at a stop sign.
Great ep!
Very interesting list thanks! I was curious if you were going to recommend a camaro since you guys have typically praised the chassis and handling on latest generation. I've been personally trying to find a good deal on the gen6 camaro, specially want a SS 1LE or really a ZL1 1LE. And there just doesn't appear to be any deals on them. Most seem to sell for still close to new. And for me it's hard to justify when something like the new dark horse interior is so much nicer and it's brand new with new warranty, but I know from everything I've read the gen 6 camaro just has a superior steering feel that I do want. I could kick myself for not getting one back in 2018 they were just sitting on lots while offering incentives. Instead I was remodeling my house....
I have a 22 SS 1LE, its a fantastic car and i would recommend it to anyone who appreciates driving dynamics.
Commenting on their discussion on the SL43 (4 cylinder discussion), I agree the SL43 just doesn't make sense. I can't imagine spending that much and not having a smooth motor, give me an EV before this motor, and I'm still a big fan of ICE. Also I still can't imagine a super boosted 4 cylinder is that considerably better for the environment then a modern N/A V8 making similar horsepower, or the I-6 Mercedes currently makes.
90s Cobra Mustangs are Americas S15 Silvia
If the ACEEEeeeee considered tire usage as well, the bigger heavy vehicles, including EVs, would all do so much worse.
No joke...I genuinely feel like Matt and Zack stand between the masses and the Tesla publicity stunt. Please keep the faith, guys!
Wait, did you just ignore the entire 1g DSMs ? That were AWD/Turbo WAY before that? Neat.
Love this show :)
The AV / EV rants are brutal. It’s taken me from a religious listener to an occasional listener. I don’t care about these electric cars or self driving features at all. It was never the point of this podcast and now it’s the main point. Am I the only one?
It's where the world is going though
Welcome to the Tesla Hate and Watch Show. This podcast is on life support. I hope it recovers.
I love how Tesla simps cope and pretend none of the shit going on at Tesla is happening so they can continue to be mindless cult slaves
03-04 is the way to for a Cobra. Sn95 ain't it.
$5,000/30,000 mi = $0.16 per mile. Not harshing you for getting it wrong on the fly and doesn’t change your conclusion imo.
Todays main topic is once again, how much Matt hates Tesla and Elon
Elon fired the Wife… and Tesla is literally the car of the guy who fired his wife.
Whenever Matt sees a Tesla his blood pressure goes up a point.
Crazy that a cobra from 94 has the same horsepower as a v6 charger from 2023 lol
A 3.6L Charger has 40rwhp more than a 94 Cobra.
@@JR10_RR I had one as a rental car the other day. First time I ever sat in any charger. I was surprised how peppy it was. I actually really liked it lol
Elon leaves the chat and they start talking cars at 39 minutes

Thank you!
Typical
Listening to the pod and just heard you mention the E46 330 Matt. Agree still great choice, even if they have gone up a bit over the last couple years. 1 series could also be included in that suggestion I feel, particularly 128i coupe. Admittedly it doesn't have a spec series like the E46, but it does have similar power to weight, NA motor, wheelbase, and overall sizing. A little tougher to come by in coupe/stick than an E46 probably, but similarly priced. I saw Zack recently reviewed one, and wonder if he would say the same. Obviously I own one of these. haha.
135i's are cool too, but much more maintenance concerns and closer to M car ownership I feel in those terms.
It baffles me that an intelligent person as Matt is would not understand that 99% of what Tesla and Elon Musk put out is pure and simple MARKETING.
Over analyzing what companies say or state is at the same time a waste of time and a favour to them.
At the end of the day everyone has opinions, and even the guy that wrote that book has opinions that are not fact based, but he will cherry pick facts to strengthen the opinion.
I feel all these discussions can be simply put as “I like this, I don’t like that”.
Matt does not like Elon Musk and Tesla, pretty clear.
No need to over support this bias with hours and hours of proof and books and opinions and articles etc etc
And I am not talking about the implicatons or allegations that AV are "safer" than traditional vehicles, we have data on that.
I am speaking about specifically Tesla and Tesla statements that are often taken as an example to base these discussions on.
Anyway, as a petrolhead that would never not drive his own ar, AV will become fully autonomous and 99% accurate in driving behaviour, tech cannot be stopped and Matt is just delusional if he thinks we will not reach that level.
Not just the fact that AV is a long way off, but Tesla charge a fortune for a flawed technology
The Mazda Miata is an incredibly well made car with the most insufferable fan base on the planet.
Skipped half of it as I got bored of the AV/Tesla ranting. No EV fan myself but dear god, enough already. Matt needs to start charging Elon rent for living I his head
Disagree, Mat is one of the only sane voices on the circle jerk around Tesla
I'm sorry you only care about ligh topics and escapism
@@josephkelly4893 no issue with him calling BS. Just wish he’d make his point and move on. Instead he makes his point then goes on the same 20 min rant he has done many times before, about how Elon and Tesla are the devil. We know he hates them but It’s getting boring now.

I would love to see ACEEE compare a 20+ year old shitbox Volvo that already exists to the list of greenest new cars.
You want to have a smaller carbon footprint? Buy a used fucking car ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
How long before Farah starts bitching about Tesla & Musk?
Edit -- Okay okay we know you live in Kommifornia and Elon dumped your wife from her cushy Twitter job, but we're up to 20mins of you ranting about Elon.
The dude has already deleted his tweet about his Cybertruck lmao, cope more
I wish Matt would clarify exactly what tesla claims. On the tesla website, it has full self driving capability as a $12K option, it even says with minimal driver intervention. I read that as not fully autonomous.
That would require him not being an emotional toddler with a vendetta.
You can stop throating fElon, he's not gonna care if you exist, ever.
When Tesla takes legal responsibility, then you will see full self driving.
Using the words "full self driving" is a claim of full self driving capability. How do you miss that???
Same way the “smoking tire” channel is not a burnout channel. It’s just bad marketing, move on.
Sounds like Matt read a book on theory that does not match reality. Where are the bodies? Where are the 1,000s of dead from these millions of self driving cars just murdering with no consequence?
He is just looking for a reason to bash Tesla because his wife was let go from her cush Twitter job and has to look for a tech job in this current economy
The guy who wrote the book was on the show and said cars from 20 years ago didnt have airbags and ABS. That guy doesnt know shit

The moment matt stops being a hater is the moment he stops being stupid
Matt hates Elon's politics (and Elon dumped Matt's wife) so Matt hates Elon's cars. Petty.
As always Matt Farah rabbid liberal
I truly believe that Matt hates Elon and Tesla more than he loves cars and the people from the industry.
I hope it’s possible for you look at the statistics and see how many people have dropped off since you started shitting on Tesla, and Jason. I am far from even remotely liking Tesla, but seeing this show go down like that is just sad.
