Alot of people don’t realise how influential this Manchester band was on fashion in the late 80s across the country and beyond, the loose fitting clothes, hooded tops etc, working class Manchester fashion spread to other towns and cities and also spread to other countries, cultures and genres of music also took on the image of working class Manchester. It’s strange how some trends start and people don’t realise where things came from. One I am trying to figure out is the chicken parmigiana in the north east, something that wasn’t there when I was a nipper, but is a cultural icon now, where did it REALLY begin?? Wtf lol
looking back on it with 50 year old eyes, my favorite music videos to revisit now are the ones that truly captured a place or a moment in time that the band comes from. This one is in the pantheon of the great examples. Also love how this shows that electronic dance culture originated a movement featuring working class kids. Here after the news of Manchester's 5th Avenue closing. Found a bit of Mondays trivia in the MEN on 5th Ave closure article that it was formerly known as Legends. The Wrote For Luck video was filmed there in 1988. Wrote For Luck was often one of the first warm up tunes played by DJ Ade when it the doors had just opened for the night.
Just put this alongside one of those videos of people dancing in a field at a rave that you can find on TH-cam and you'll see that it's actually a work of art.

First saw them supporting New Order in 1986. Bloke stood next to me in the audience said: "They're half cut, this lot". Me and my two mates were absolutely hooked from that night on. Because apart from New Order and a few other bands. Most rock and roll outfits didn't sound or look like lads that we knew at that point. It had all gone a bit too twee and indie in the mid 80's. I knew from that night on that they'd become massive at some point, they didn't sound or look like any other band on the scene. Despite them looking like they couldn't give a shit, they sounded very tight and very funky even back then before anything had even been released on record. Went from watching them headlining in front of a couple of dozen people at some gigs to headlining G-Mex a couple of years later.
If you were born in the early 70s then the late 80s/ early 90s were our 60s! Made a few Happy Mondays GIFS as they were hardly any & they'll be available through FB & twitter shortly

Here after the news of Manchester's 5th Avenue closing. Found a bit of Mondays trivia in the MEN on 5th Ave closure article that it was formerly known as Legends. The Wrote For Luck video was filmed there in 1988. Wrote For Luck was often one of the first warm up tunes played by DJ Ade when it the doors had just opened for the night.
Both the tune and the video have aged very well, can’t believe it’s over 30 yrs old!?!
Just put this alongside one of those videos of people dancing in a field at a rave that you can find on TH-cam and you'll see that it's actually a work of art.

First saw them supporting New Order in 1986. Bloke stood next to me in the audience said: "They're half cut, this lot". Me and my two mates were absolutely hooked from that night on. Because apart from New Order and a few other bands. Most rock and roll outfits didn't sound or look like lads that we knew at that point. It had all gone a bit too twee and indie in the mid 80's. I knew from that night on that they'd become massive at some point, they didn't sound or look like any other band on the scene. Despite them looking like they couldn't give a shit, they sounded very tight and very funky even back then before anything had even been released on record. Went from watching them headlining in front of a couple of dozen people at some gigs to headlining G-Mex a couple of years later.
