Wundervolle, klare Interpretation, großartige Stimmen und beseelte Musiker. Diese Kantate vermittelt inhaltlich Zuversicht, Freude und Erlösung. Stefan H.
Somehow the tenor sounds the most youthful among all the voices. Now and then I will be listening to this in the background, and whenever I watch the video I am surprised again.
Only Bach could composed this masterpiece cantata. The voices are superb. The melody is sublime and the musical movement is so wonderful that becomes this cantata one that I like most of all. The sensitivity and delicacy are extreme. Viva Bach!!!
Discovering the Netherlands Bach Society only in the last six months, I am grieving for the years of my life that I spent without them. Every performance is a revelation of joy and bliss. It makes me so happy not to have a single cloud of criticism cross my mind, but only love and delight. The instrumentalists are all stars in addition to the singers. But a special shout-out here to the video director, whose framing and shot changes beautifully enhance the phrase structure of the music, helping us "see" what Bach was doing. Hoping to hear this ensemble in person before too long.
Bach never bores me. Even with original instruments, Bach sounds irresistibly modern. Thanks to AoB for sharing. Thanks forever to Bach for being with us. :)
This cantata is so very dear to me ... it is the first of Bach's cantatas I ever performed, back at NYU, in ... well, ... blush ... never mind that part! So wonderful to find this splendid glowing performance!
What a beautiful cantata. Noticed at 11:50, seemed like a small thing, but lead violinist gives a little smile to the soprano before performing a wonderful sublime aria. Humans working together both professionally and personally producing such beauty. Thank you to all the wonderful musicians who enrich my life, a whole ocean and most of a continent removed.
I agree. The music takes us to a more sublime place in our lives. Bach captured this probably more than any composer. I hate to be sappy but its only in these comments that one can share the affect this has upon listening to this.
The fugue in the second section has as its subject a descending scale starting on there 4th scale degree. Such a beautiful treatment of such simplicity.
I agree and have commented the same. Not just about the violinist (Shunske Sato, musical director at the time), who does that often; check the Aria mid Cantata 147. One can feel the camaraderie and shared appreciation for the occasion, the material, the union. I'm sure in a short time's robots will be able to replicate many things, but art resides in the exquisite humaneness of its production.
In the Aria Er segnet the level of organic symbiosis between the soprano and the violin soloist is amazing. They deeply understand this music and bring it with a brilliant less is more attitude. Congratulations to the orchestra. World class.
This is so beautiful! The harmony between the soloists and the musicians feels almost Divine. What a comfort for the soul....thank you all! Bach was a genius without any doubt!🙏🏻
The clarity, the richness. How immensely moving. That duet at 8:22, the strings of the theorbo peeping throughout. As some say, Bach really did write everything. And it doesn't sound a day "old" (not that it would matter)!
What a wonderful story about Bach marriage, and then his friends marriage, that I can read about in the fore-text! True or untrue. And what a wonderful soprano Dorothee Mields has. And how wonderful is is listening to this 30 april, when spring is said to come to us here in northern Sweden. Well, we have to wait for it a little bit longer!
If anyone asks me why I like Bach the answer is so obvious when you hear such heavenly lines interweaving majestically as above ......... Beautiful performance!
It seems the Netherlands Bach Society has turned me into a glutton. I simply cannot get enough of these corpulent feasts for the ears, mind, body and soul. In the words of the Bard, if music be the food of love, play on.
Thank you, thank you for these life enhancing recordings. Such a privilege to live in the age of the Early Music/historic performance revival, and the internet.
The tenore bass duet is fantastic. I love the music and the intelligence and sensitivity of the singers. It looks like the tenor studied every single note to optimize sound. Great artist
Much to admire about this performance and the recording... I like the chosen tempi and the balance between singers and musicians. Simply outstanding! Imho the best version of this beautiful cantata...
A special moment for me when I heard this Aria for the first time a couple of years ago. Recently I decided to make a short analysis on this beautiful vocal masterpiece (it's on my channel for those who are interested). Thank you Bach & this ensemble!
The first Bach cantata that I ever sang, and as Tenor soloist, too. It's still one of my favorites, especially, obviously, the duett "Der Herr segne euch".
Spectacular. Can music and life be any more delightful? I love the ending, with van Veldhoven seemingly tipping his hat and saluting Bach. And Bach saying: "yea, you might think this was the greatest 12-minute piece ever written in the history of the universe. But it's nothing. Now if you would excuse me, I need to work on the music for next Sunday."
I heard this rendition about 2 years ago, and I could not find it anywhere (neither Spotify nor Apple music, nor even youtube at the time). I remembered again today and decided to try looking one more time, and voila! it was the first result when I searched
I love this interpretation! excellent soloists, choir, everything! With this interpretation, they made God come to me! Keep it up! And never forget "The Lord has blessed the house of Israel and Aron"!
Wow there's so much beauty in this piece. I love the setting of string quartet and continuo Bach uses here, and he does it so well. Just a meaningless request, but would be great to see Veldhoven filmed more; interesting to watch a great conductor with such a good ensemble as well
Fascinating to watch the one-voice-per-part performance. I tend to prefer a full choir with soloists--but this is so good, I can't complain. Simply beautiful.
Joshua Rifkin, and his Bach Ensemble, in 1980 recorded the Mass in B Minor this way. eight singers total. on nonesuch label. beautiful. I did not know at the time that it was controversial. it is just beautiful. just like the nederlanders.
0:07 Sinfonia
1:42 Der Herr denket an uns (Chor)
4:08 Er segnet (Arie)
6:40 Der Herr segne euch (Duett)

whenever Dorothee Mields sings, all else shrinks into unimportance.... a rare and bright star in the musical firmament....
No exaggeration, I listen to this recording every single day.
Me too... not alone!!
Same

It's a pity that I can not "like" this performance every time I enjoy it!

The gold-standard for Bach cantatas.Shared by Bachstiftung.
The heavenly voice of Dorothee Mields is what I am thinking of!
As a adolescent I toured with a boys choir around the world and this my favorite pieces of music to sing. Soprano I & II.
The more I listen, the more I enjoy.
Cannot possibly get any better than this
But then I am convinced of that every time I here a performance by the NBS. So what's new.
hear
This cantata is so very dear to me ... it is the first of Bach's cantatas I ever performed, back at NYU, in ... well, ... blush ... never mind that part! So wonderful to find this splendid glowing performance!
Thanks to NBS I have developed such an appreciation for Bach's early cantatas.
Lost for words. What wonderful music, performers, conductor and video.
Such brilliant ornamentation by Mields and Sato in the second movement!
What a sinfonia! What a miraculous balance between voices and instruments ! What a music!

Absolutely marvellous.
I love them all in their entirely, above all the music, the singers, the orchestra, the conductor.
I fully agree; they are all wonderful. Do not forget the videos themselves; they are fantastic; great way of filming!
DIVINE MUSIC + Perfect Interpretation + Perfect Video and Audio Recording = An Incredible gift for all of us. THANK YOU!!!!!!
The tenore bass duet is fantastic. I love the music and the intelligence and sensitivity of the singers. It looks like the tenor studied every single note to optimize sound. Great artist
Great Theorbo continuo. Is almost the profound sound that one must pick out and identify and enjoy.
That is what I call a reference recording. Absolute perfect!
Much to admire about this performance and the recording... I like the chosen tempi and the balance between singers and musicians. Simply outstanding! Imho the best version of this beautiful cantata...
O yes, the best ever !
Awesome! I truly love it! And of course I completely enchanted by Dorothee Mields!
Dorothee Mields.

"Der Herr denket an uns"; "The Lord thinks of us". I don't know if it is true, but this cantata certainly makes me feel this way.

Lovely cantata. Great performance.
The aria is one of my very favourites. Beautifully sung and performed, as was the whole cantata. Well done.
Absolutely marvelous!
