Consider looking for places a little further along the train tracks. Your money will go further, the buildings will be newer (so less likely to have high cost renovations anytime in the near future), you get better apartment layouts and you can still get to the centre in 10 minutes. Generally the areas along the tracks have good train and bus traffic.
Also: better hiking trails in the woods.
But that's really depending on what you want. The Pasila-Alppila-Kallio axis is gorgeous and there's new building going on all the time. It'll be a stunner in a year or two. And has good bars.
Ruoholahti is also gorgeous.

Welcome Dave (and welcome back Cat!)! I have to say, apart from 2 years when I lived and studied in Glasgow, I've lived my entire life in Helsinki and I totally agree with you on it being the perfect blend of large capital and smaller city living. Although I love London with a great and abiding passion, I don't think I would like living there either. Every time I go for a visit there, I need a couple of days of downtime because it's so overwhelming.
Haha I couldn't have put it better myself! London is an AWESOME place to visit. But living here is a whole different ball game!

Welcome to Finland, I'm so happy for you two! Btw, a word of advice: if the apartment is located more than 3 or 4 kilometres from the centre, it is a huge bonus if the apartment is located near a metro station. Even though Helsinki is not a big city, it is still so much faster to move by metro than by other vehicles, especially during rush-hour. If you have to visit the city centre often, moving by metro saves so much time and nerves compared to a tram or a bus.
Thanks for the tip! We'd definitely look to be close to public transport! I'll be in and out of the city quite a bit and we don't want to get a car (if we can avoid it!)

I think you have checked these websites but etuovi.com is a website where people are selling aparments and vuokraovi.com is almost the same but for renting. Oikotie is also one place that I can think of now.

Already commented on Cat's video as well, but welcome to Helsinki! :) We did the move from London half a year ago, and the thing you mentioned about apartments has got to be the best thing about all this. We got a one bed in the most central part of Helsinki for exactly the same price that we paid for a crappy studio in Highgate in London... So I'm sure you guys are going to find a nice place here in Helsinki, good luck with the move!

Living in Canada may give you an idea what's like to live in Finland. I lived in Finland for about 4,5 years, it is a wonderful country except the language/ coldness/ darkness. I moved from Finland to Australia.

Tbh i recommend the area of Töölö, there is a beatiful river and a big park, the apartments are pretty nice, and the connections to the city centre are very good! Also Pasila is a very good place. The train takes you wherever you want in a couple of minutes. I hope you like it:) welcome!

also when looking for an apartment there's many web sites where to look but the biggest sites are oikotie.fi and vuokraovi.com (or etuovi.com, depends on if you are going to rent or buy an apartment). on those sites you can put up a "watchdog" which notifies you if there's any new suitable apartments. good luck with the search!

I would recommend "Jätkäsaari", there are brand new houses with reasonable prices (if you choose renting) and everything is near

I recommend that you check how does the public transport works in the area where you are going to move. Belive it or not there's places in Helsinki where the public transport is not working very well. You can check the bus, train and tram schedules on hsl.fi. I have allways checked the public transport possibilities before filling application for apartment. Good luck with home hunting! 😊

I also live in Helsinki, and wanted to remind you that dont forget about east Helsinki. Its also from the eastest part only 20 min by metro if you find apartment close. I live so near that i can see the minutes when the metro is leaving, and still brand new apartment and not far away from centre. I think you would enjoy Herttoniemi.. 😜

Once you move to Finland, I wish you could "review" Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in July... (I'm gonna be working there 😂) and why I'm recommending you to visit Kuhmo is because we have a lot of forests and smaller trips to the woods here, so it'd be refreshing and calm and relaxing
