The performance is so painfully sorrowful, it's almost too much to bear! Beautiful song/aria from Henry Purcell the master of melancholic; brilliantly performed by Mistro Philippe Jaroussky, countertenor & the Ensemble Artaserse.
O, let me forever weep: My eyes no more shall welcome sleep. I'll hide me from the sight of day, And sigh my soul away. He's gone, his loss deplore, And I shall never see him more. -Henry Purcell
Classic music is awsomely beautiful but....... sometimes I believe it doesn't express enough feeling. This piece is the proof that they are some precious exeptions.
+TheChivo666 I would love to take you on a journey through my ancient music collection to prove you wrong. Chopin, Rachmaninov, Handel, Lully, Marais, Puccini and of course Purcell were masters of melancholy, Heinrich Biber, Elgar, and Gabrieli masters of triumph. Holst and Ravel masters of dread. Nowhere anywhere in modern repertoire comes close.
O, let me forever weep: My eyes no more shall welcome sleep. I'll hide me from the sight of day, And sigh my soul away. He's gone, his loss deplore, And I shall never see him more.
He's a countertenor, born with that incredible range but he trained to make it stronger. Not many of 'em running around. Klaus Nomi was also a countertenor.
Philippe Jaroussky has wonderful subtlety and grace. The quality of this recording/video perhaps does not do full justice to his gifts. Certainly, it's worth comparing this to Alfred Deller's own masterful and tender interpretation of "Oh let me weep," also on You Tube.
One of the greatest composers, he was only 36 years old and composing such a songs in the 17th century!
One of the saddest songs I ever listened to... Purcell was a genius composer. How amazing this music can invoke such sorrow
and to die a young man like Mozart and Schubert.
Purcell was an absolute master of the passacaglia-see also Dido’s Lament, with the chromatic descending baseline that repeats again and again.
Life hurts. We sing, we weep. Life's so short. Music of the day or night expands this short life. And then, darkness, so deep.
She's gone, and I shall never, never see her more... These words flow my veins. Devil, what a pain! Long life to your beloved ones
The Voice of countertenor is really wonderful.
his voice, his musicianship, his person, all wonderful!
The performance is so painfully sorrowful, it's almost too much to bear! Beautiful song/aria from Henry Purcell the master of melancholic; brilliantly performed by Mistro Philippe Jaroussky, countertenor & the Ensemble Artaserse.

Deeply touching, of star dust humanity, passing into the void.
I am in love with his voice!
The violin at 5:15 sobs a little as the note catches in its throat. Beautiful. so melancholy and delicate.

Beautiful so beautiful.
Perfect. Perfectly hits the spot. What more can one say.

I love the very Renaissance-like ending by Jaroussky!
Purcell exposes other colors in Jaroussky's voice. His rhythmic pacing here is incredible. I love the image, too! Great video!
Purcell & Jaroussky are a DUO that resonates divinely inspired melody of sorrow.
What genius music from Purcell.
De la pureté dépouillée, merveilleux moment...
fascinating voice, thank you Philippe!
Another Jaroussky's superb performance

Seriously, if you don't think classical music expresses enough feeling you haven't been listening to much. Certainly not to the right things.

This aria seems to describe the loss of your father, Philippe. It is a gift to be able to transcend feelings into poetry.
beautiful piece of music
Es ist einfach unsterblich!!! Po prostu nieśmiertelne!!!
Amazing artist!
Perfection. I needed this today.
O, let me forever weep:
My eyes no more shall welcome sleep.
I'll hide me from the sight of day,
And sigh my soul away.

Klaus Nomi was the BEST!

Wonderful singing ...
Voce d'Angelo Grazie
@78fufluns There are certain songs that I can listen to a hundred times in a row without getting bored - this is one of them.
O let me wee.
The best version of this song i ve ever listened.
Klaus Nomi did many pop songs, but for me when I heard him do Purcell's "The Cold Song", I think I stopped breathing.
Thanks and love, Dad.
Unusually beautiful
Awesome song'n performance🙏👍👏🤝🌹🌻
tout simplement merveilleux!
great! I am crying from this -_-
fantastic
Bravissimo e molto toccante!
No it is a men, but a counter-tenor , he sings the part of the alto song of the female voice ...
Música que sana el alma 💖

Purcell is the Master!
Time of sadness
Bellisimo! Gracias por compartirlo!
I totally get you! I must tell you it doesn't lessen as time goes by ;)

Thanks.
Did he ever do Dido's Lament, that you know of? Have to study that, and hearing him do almost anything makes studying so much nicer. :)
Sublime!
I love you................................. and I'll let you weep
forever
Θρηνητική ελεγεία,Trauer Elegie...!!!
Love it
