Some great footage, learned to drive in an Atlantean back in 1999 with MTL north, great instructor Bill Barlow got me through with 2 minor marks. You're right about Liverpool council, they've ruined the city centre and surrounding roads with empty cycle lanes. 👍
in 1966 I was a conductor at Speke garage. I well remember the Atlanteans coming in to replace the "back-loaders". Many of the older drivers could not cope with dealing directly with passengers after spending 8 hours a day speaking only to their guard. They had to leave.
Yes one guy, can't remember his name at the moment wrote a book about his time on Liverpool buses. Started out as a guard before coming a driver. Left the buses when Atlanteans came in
OMG I remember these buses. I also remember the driver would close all the doors at the end of his shift and sleep up top on the back seat ready for 6 or 7am. That would be considered inhuman nowadays. And can you believe it was wipepo who did this?

i do like to see videos that show both interior AND exterior views, as this one does. Great viewing. Liverpool should be congratulated on having so many tree-lined streets.
My father used to drive the 28 route out of the old litherland depot (Linacre road)...I passed my PSV in the old PD2 with croxteth park driving school years ago. I worked out of bootle depot driving the 53s / 56s (which I travelled as a kid with grandad) also the 60 route 61 etc...Lovely to see the buses back out..
I'm 52, and now living in Ohio. But... good memories of catching the 10 into town back in the 70's and 80"s. Great video, audio, and just very relaxing to see the area around castle and James Street. Pity there's no room at the Pier Head.
Absolutely nothing. They are free. There are stewards at the events to which you can give a donation if you wish but it isn't a requirement of travel. No fare's are allowed to be taken for legal reasons. As a courtesy I always make a donation
@@Drew-DastardlyI used to say I was 14 when I was 16 ,one day the conductor chucked me off the No 10 because I was smoking . He said if you want to smoke like a grown up ,you should of paid the correct adult fare . That put an end to that caper .

Thanks, the bit from Litherland I was on the long bulkhead seat. You could possibly lie down there. But if you fell asleep you would miss the wonderful sounds from the engine
I remember travelling on the last trams no 6 when I was about three , when i lived by Broadgreen Station . I can also remember the first type of Atlanteans before that 501 numbered one . I remember my mother taking me on either the 80 ,86 or 87 route around 1960 on one , they also used them on them on the 79 route down Childwall Valley road to Lee Park . The first Atlantean like that 501 job ,was on the 81 route from Woolton Golf course to Childwall five ways around 1964 cost 4 d fare child in old money . I used to get to get several buses to my high school in Garson & Dingle & Riversdale Tech from 1965 - 1970 , from Dovecot using many different combinations of routes & numbers . The only numbered buses I remember turning around at Aiggy vale was the 6I & 68 routes to Seaforth , the 60 turned around at the Dingle by Tocky tech high school back to Bootle via Old Swan . Also I traveled on many of the old rear open buses ,& the old Lowdekker Crosvilles ,their gear boxes used to drone & whine like hell . Last time I got on a bus was a few years ago on the 437 Wirral route ,it was a frustrating soul destroying experience , the bus crawled along ,the driver made sure he got stuck at ever road junction ,crossing & roundabout kept stopping to count up the fares ,& then took ages to change drivers ,I got off & walked in the end even though I was on a walking cane . The Merseyside buses have gone well down the nick ,& you need to take out a mortgage just to pay to go a couple of stops . I would only take a bus now if I was desperate & my motorbikes were all off the road .. But it was good to see the old proper green Liverpool buses & parts of Liverpool I remember in better days .👍
Some great memories there thanks for sharing. Liverpool corporations very first Atlantean was E2, which was a prototype for what followed. The very first Atlantean on Merseyside & indeed the very first in municipal service in England was Wallasey No1. Entering service in December 1958. Atlamteans were to serve Merseyside right through to deregulation & beyond. Today's bus 'service' is a shadow of what it used to be. Although the max £2 fare is good value for long distance routes it isn't for short. A merseytravel 'saveaway' isn't as good value as it once was. Though if you make multiple journeys from say Southport to Chester & in between it does work out

They could still be seen around on the 79 route up until about 1964 - 5 . They were completely different outside & inside from the type that’s numbered 501 . The Wallasey ones were Seagreen coloured ,which was actually cream ,as the manager at Wallasey was called Green ,& Leyland were told to see Green for the colour required .. The Liverpool ones were the same style only green . Those with the number 501 were the second version I saw & traveled on ,which was on the 81 route in around 1964 . Speke to Bootle route . I used to get off at a the Fiveways in Childwall ,& could sometimes see the old original Atlantean’s on the 79 route ,going down Childwall valley road . There must of been about two of them in service at least . I am an old codger now & got a bus pass ,but have only used it once to pick up my new motorcycle . I would only use it when desperate ,as traveling by bus these days is a soul destroying experience on a one man bus , with a load of punters glued to mobile phones ,not looking where they are going ,even when they are going up & down stairs or getting off & on the bus . Any good days we had have well been & gone , bring back the trusty Guy Arab bus 👍

@@Merseywail A couple of decades back on the Wirral they had some smart looking Volvo crimson red & cream Mersey buses for a while. They had posh seats & stereo radio for the punters . Next minute they were gone & replaced by these Arriva cowboys using tatty old crocks from some other place . They got newer buses now but as you say bland livery’s & the same one all over the country Arriva blue .
Lovely to see the old green buses driving around the city. I wish we could turn the clocks back and make it a permanent sight.
Don't we all . Today's buses might be environmentally green , but I would prefer to see the old back loaders in traditional livery round our streets

Yes good driver is Bill. Unfortunately Liverpool isn't unique in messing up the roads. It's happening elsewhere too

It disappeared after various mergers, I think some former employee revived it at a local micro pub but it has since ceased

The old depot at Litherland is now a home bargains store. I remember all the buses parked up inside there
I think it was a Tesco at one time lol. When I was on the 53 route I passed it often. And can still visualise it there. A bit sad lol.
