    My 25 ton truck was stuck in some deep mud on a building site....they had a JCB could pull me out, but no rope except the thin blue nylon line that cable com panies use to pull cable through conduits. One of the guys looked at the thin line, took a knife to it tied one end of 5 pieces then he proceeded by hand to make a rope, within 5 minutes he had a rope...it still looked too thin...but he said it would hold and it did, out came my truck!! I asked him where he learned that, he said " 20 years on Deep Sea Trawlers and you learn how to make ropes and just what a rope will take before it breaks" respect to the guy.

    I did this with 550 paracord. Ended up with a 12 strand rope and put two log chain links on the ends and two hooks. Great to have in the truck.

    I would recommend putting your two machines farther apart so you get longer and therefore more useful ropes

      Im pretty sure they know. They probably just made it short so it could be demonstrated from start to finish quickly.

    Having spliced rope in the past both logging wire rope and fisherman's nylon ropes I've never seen the piece on the end before.
    What is the thing at the end that the father was using called.
    Often wondered how this kind of rope was made.
    Cheers NZ

    I watched a demonstration of this at Fort Ross at the Russian festival just north of Jenner, Ca. I was so intrigued I took a bunch of pictures of a very simple version of the crank as well as 1 made from metal gears just like yours. I have full notes if anyone wants to make this plus notes on each & every step. Pretty cool esp if you boat or just want to make any kind of custom rope. Start with 115 % of desired length. You want 100 ft ?, start w 115. After you wet it down it will shrink & tighten & gain strength. The gentleman demonstrating explained that it can additionally be waxed for smooth closing loops & lassos - so next time you see a huge spool of twine you'll know what its for. He also stressed that you want an odd # of strands on ALL of the hooks at the geared crank end which will determine where you cut & tie off your twine. All get 3 or 5 or 7 etc etc. It just struck me that people had to figure out how to create this before we had machines do everything.

    “How I do it”. My Grandpa and uncles used to do it this way in Mexico. Mexican cowboys came up with method then showed the American cowboys. Lassos were made from certain agave plant fibers. Old farts still make them out of the original materials and old methods and sell the ropes for a higher dollar than the new ropes.

    • @Rustaholic777
      @Rustaholic777 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The center HOOK only turns once per turn of the crank. . . The other three are what you make rope from. . .They all turn about three times for each turn of the crank. . . If you find and read the original manual for that machine you will see that center hook is for finishing the rope. . . The setup here has a crank on the far end for finishing.

    Yup its a lot easyer with 3 people looks like but I learned how whn I was locked up, we normally did it alone, n we normally would just do 3 strand total at a time n if we needed to just re braid tht 3 strand rope into a I think tht would make 9 strands re braided

      You can make a simple but effective one with no gears. Bend up 3 strong hooks , each having a crank handle shape bent at the rear. Start with eye bolts with a long machine thread. Careful pre-planning is needed to locate nuts and washers (that will support the tension on the hooks/cranks) before the next bend is made.
      The forward hook section is secured (but spin freely) in the first piece of plywood or 2x6 which is part of the anchor.
      The 3 bent crank handles go through 3 holes in a second piece of thinner plywood. Those 3 holes perfectly match the triangle pattern of the first 3 holes. Cut the second lighter plywood shape with a kind of paddle handle extending out the side, which allows you to turn all 3 hooks at the same rate. 50 years ago my scout troop got a giant spool of sisal or manilla bailing twine. With that primitive homemade system we made a lot of rope that day.

    • @bobbywhite5319

      The rope is all twisting in same direction and twisting on itself. The friction between the rope causes them to stay

      LaserFalcon ask your mom.

    • @classixdrummer
      @classixdrummer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The initial twist of the individual twine was clockwise which causes the fibres to try to unwind in a counter clockwise direction. The second braiding step is done in a counter clockwise direction causing the twisted twine to try to unwind in a clockwise direction. What that leaves you with is two internal structures trying to unwind in opposite directions which cancels out the tendency to unwind altogether.
