Good to see Titanium used in the Castrol oils.👍 Great antiwear additve, though not commonly used. Schaeffer used to use Titanium in their 0W-20 add package for a while. They no longer do, which was disappointing.
Good information. I'm biased because I worked at Valvoline in Willow Springs. Some additional thoughts: Blending and real-time testing of the product are very important. Our plants used a high speed, computer controlled in line blending technology to precisely control additives and a triboligy lab to check and verify every run.
Chuck, thanks::: I been kind of VALVOLINE Fan…….etc… actually, just switched both Vehicles to Oil VALVOLINE/Filters , @ my POINT S Tire & Repairs Store,,(( I am cutting. Back Car Work,, downsizing etc…@age 75 young. )).
Hello Chuck, in what year Valvoline started putting in boron additives into their lube oil?. Engine oil meeting API SP specs supposedly have 40% more protection against wear on the timing chain. What additives were added, and it's ppm level, in order to get to SP specs or is it due to using base oil III+ made from gas to liquid technology? 😅😅😅 Thanks.
Valvoline is the only oil I use. I'm sure there are other good brands but any time I use different oil other than Valvoline, I can hear ticks and my engine just feels a bit off
So I've had a few comments here where people almost want to almost challenge me I'm not going to be having conversations with people when I have clear results here that are posted, I do agree that if you change your oil regularly every 3 to 5,000 miles most of these oil brands that have better additive packages are not going to matter they really don't just change your oil and you're going to be good. I'm not arguing with people and I'm not going to debate whether or not I'm better at presenting information versus your favorite TH-camr or somebody else I just don't have time for that so you guys can say believe and do whatever you want I put in a lot of work here hard work here and I don't want that retracted because somebody else is a fanboy of an oil product that I'm showing is not doing very well and that's what I'm leaving it at from there you guys can do what you want if you need help let me know if not I'm out of the comment section
Honestly I'm a long time Mobile 1 user of 9 years but lately my engine has been burning oil. Took it to two mechanics and found no leaks and little carbon build up since I change my oil every 3k miles. They both recommend I change oil brands. Thank you for this content and helping me find a new oil brand.
Glad I saw this comment. I started using Mobile 1 on my 2009 1.2 Renault Clio (125,000 miles) last year. Did lots of research and lots of people said Mobile 1 was perhaps the best oil. The car runs like a dream and even sounds better than before I used the Mobile 1, but, it uses oil like never before. I have to top it up every month, maybe half a litre. There is no oil leaks, no smoke from exhaust. I can't work it out. Where is the oil going? Any advice would be appreciated.
@@stevesalt2921more than likely being burned. I'm assuming you've looked everywhere in the engine bay? Valve gasket, oil pan gasket, rear main seal? I wish we got those cars over here btw.
@@vermontvermont9292 My mechanic found a leak in the end. It was either coming from the cam seal or the crank seal. It kept all the oil in the protective tray under the engine, that's why there was no oil on the floor. He put some Seal sealant in the oil land the oil level hasn't dropped at all. Hopefully that will sort it.
Very interesting results, can't say I am surprised about Mobil one. The valvoline surprised me honestly, really good package and really affordable. Thanks for doing these Boss!
I’m liking the #’s on the Castrol and Valvoline! Will be curious if you have the Penzoil Platinum in another test!!! Really APPRECIATE your time and effort on doing this for us! God Bless🙏
I like to hear this....I've been using Valvoline synthetic for 20 years. 3000 mile oil changes in everything I've owned and always seem to get 200-300k out of my vehicles and my engines look almost new inside.
I have a 2007 Honda Ridgeline. Since its very first oil change, I've only used Valvoline. Not even the full synthetic. Started off on the Valvoline Synthetic BLEND so I wouldn't have to spend extra on the full synthetic. Once it reached 200k miles,..the Valvoline oil change shop advised me to switch to the Valvoline MAX LIFE. Not even joking,...411k miles later..original factory engine & it's still going strong & not even FULL SYNTHETIC!. Im sold on Valvoline. Started off my Tundra on Valvoline...lets see how far I can take that one while im still using my Honda as a daily driver.
I use edge synthetic 5w-30 in both my 2019 3.5 ecoboost f150 and 2006 prius. The f150 has run castrol magnatec or edge since 5k miles and runs like new. The dipstick level reads the same after a 5k mile interval. It idles exceptionally smooth and quiet. The prius was bought neglected with 170k miles and responded VERY well to castrol Edge. Cold starts were immediately less cringe-worthy and it has been steadily improving for the last 20k miles. It also went from burning 1qt of oil every 1k miles to 1/2 of a quart in 3k miles.
@The Flat Rock I think you're right. The oil-actuated VVT system is also working better. I've been doing shorter interval oil changes on it to help clean it up. I change the oil it when it turns black, which was less than 500 miles after the first oil change and more like 3k miles now.
@@Brandon_Nelson92 great that it's working for you. Much better than an engine flush that can dislodge crap that could damage bearings. Possibly the piston rings are functioning better by not allowing blow by so you experience cleaner oil over a longer period. Costs less than tearing down the engine. I've always been leary with VVT engines, I have two vehicles with V8's a Camaro with the LS1 5.7 and a Dodge 1500 truck, 5.7 hemi but it has the deactivation of cylinders. However I don't drive it crazy and it gets frequent oil changes so it's still running fine being 15 years old but only 115,000 miles.
Than you for taking the time to research these different motor oils. Your explanation of the different additives and what they do was clear and concise. Hope the knee is feeling better!
Hello, First, thank you for your work, it is very helpful. Second…today I had Ford put Amsoil signature series in my 21 f150 Coyote engine 😁😁😁I was on bulk motorcraft synthetic Ford uses. I noticed the engine is very, very quiet compared to the dealer synthetic. Also, feels as the engine works easier…I will see how it does in the long run but so far Im happy with what I noticed right away. Cheers,
I've been a long time Castrol fan. Since around 2003/2004. I use all their products in my car. From engine oil and transmission fluid to brake fluid. Been great so far in my 2019 civic coupe ex-t. Now at 55,000 miles. I've also switched filters. The Honda A02 filter is made by fram. It's not even a decent fram filter either, just the mid level at best. So I've switched to wix but only if it's the american made filter. I also use Baldwin filters as well. Really , and especially on the 10th gen civics changing your oil often is a good idea. I'm still old school and do mine every 3500 miles. Just an old habit from 20+ years ago when most of my cars were 10w30 conventional oil. Figured with DI cars these days, and oil dilution, plus a turbo it's not hurting anything to change the oil more often, and especially since I plan on keeping this car for many decades.
I agree, thanks for this. I have good luck for Quaker State for a number of 300K+ engines. But, this was quite interesting. I agree with your assessments.
You are fast becoming my favorite to watch on you tube. Great areas of auto repair and good general information. Many blessing to your shop and family. Thanks for letting us look over your shoulder.
Great video man. Wasn't too surprised that Valvoline won. All of their packages change every couple years, but Valvoline almost always has the best additive packs, and Mobil always add the bare minimum. They'll all work, but if your engine is direct injection or turbo charged then you really need the best.
Great information. I ran the Castrol Edge for years. Great oil. That and royal purple. I know when I switched to Castrol Edge on my 170k Corolla it quoted down a ton on cold start ups. Thanks for the review Boss!
I am currently running with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and happen to have Valvoline Extended Protection on deck. Good to hear it has a good additive package, thanks for the information. Have you heard of XADO motor oil? They use a ceramic-metal additive package.
After seeing this I'll stay with my edge 0w40... it performs well and the numbers are also good. Mobil 1 really disappointed me but I haven't used them in 5 years.
Great video, Rich. Thanks for the time and expense you put into your channel. It's greatly appreciated! I hope your knee is doing better. God bless, brother.
I really liked your video - very educational. A bit of info - I purchased my 1991 Explorer new and swapped out the Ford oil with Castrol 20w50 which I changed every 3,000 miles. At 150,000 miles I was gifted with a blown head gasket. Slight, but, still....... I decided to rebuild the engine. After the teardown I found that none of the bearings, cam, rod and main, were worn. Same specs as if the engine had just come new from the factory. Total shocker. Now I use Castrol 5W50 Synthetic along with Lucas Oil Stabilizer. Engine runs smooth with no hiccups or burps.
Yeah a lot of the oil specs are only because of the EPA and fuel mileage and essentially it comes down to trial and error I know a guy that does nothing but run 15W40 in his 2012 3.5 L naturally aspirated F-150 and it's got 440,000 miles on it
Great job putting alot of info at our fingertips. I know you've said it many times, but it bears repeating.....Just Change Your Oil Regularly. While motor oils have improved greatly, I just can't wrap my head around the recommended 10k mile oil changes. I just continue dropping my oils, depending on vehicles, at 5k and 3.5k Something I was taught 50+ yrs ago.....Oil is the Cheapest Thing that Gives the Most Protection.
I’ve used the valvoline for a number of years in the family minivans, neither ever consumed oil, recently been using pennzoil in the van, engine is still very clean at 150k. Recent experience in my 5th gen Camaro LFX V6 used the liquid moly you have on the bench, I like that it comes in the Liter bottles, and isn’t causing excessive consumption, I had to add a quart at 2300 miles, which is better than the synthetic oil at the shop, the car used a quart of that in 1500 miles.
Given the price point (vs. Castrol edge) and your Blackstone results, it looks like my next oil change will be with Valvoline. As I already trust and use it for my transmission and differential services, I'd be saving myself $5-6/jug, honestly. I can definitely depend on Castrol to protect my engine(s), but it's been getting a little spendy (especially since the 5.7l hemi V8 holds 7 quarts, not 5). Thank you for this detailed video. :)
You give Blackstone labs a lot of business. I've driven by the place several times and until I started watching your channel I never knew the depth of what they do.
My Father and Grandfather swore by Valvoline 10w-40 All Climate oils when I was growing up and as a young driver & hot rodder I used Valvoline All Climate 10W-40 and Valvoline Racing 20W-50. Never an engine failure never an oil related problem. Later on I went to work for Volkswagen. Castrol oils seemed to be used exclusively while some dealers threw in Valvoline on occasion. All good stuff. In my retirement I am all about the deal. Lots of deals on line so I am pretty well stocked up!! In today's world good oil at a reasonable price is where it's at!! Hahaha 😁 😆 Nice video!! Keep up the good work!! 👍 Cheers, Rick in Ole Virginny!!
Thanks, I just changed two of our Vehickes to *****VALVOLINE oil/ Filters @my Point S Shop…..!, Downsizing ,& age 75 young, so letting Mechanics do most Stuff now……though used a “‘Mechanic “” friend , who had a VALVOLINE SHOP for a lot of stuff : tranny, radiator too. Been good results, etc. Previously for several years approx ….
I think one very important aspect which can only be observed with a UOA is the quality of the base oil. I've seen oils with mediocre add packs but outstanding base to do great in the engines. There are examples of that even in the conventional oil sphere.
Per Scotty Kilmer's advice, I going with the "5k-mile/6-month" oil change schedule. Rather than worrying about "oil brands", be faithful on how often you change your vehicle's oil.
Just recently found your channel; great content! I’ve definitely been a Mobil 1 guy for years however recently I’ve noticed it seems like there quality has gone down. After watching this I’m going to switch to Castrol Edge EP in my vehicles as that has been my #2 pick over the years when M1 is out of stock.
Wow that blows my mind I'm 58 and I noticed every time I changed my oil in the past valvoline was very dirty,, Iooks like I was wrong.. Hey thanks for what your doing Rich..
Just did an oil change on my 23’ Honda Civic 2.0 k20C2. I went with Valvoline Extended protection 0W-20 with a Mobil 1 oil filter and wow I can tell a difference in the low idle not hearing the valves as much now compared to the Honda genuine brand oil !!! Happy with my choice and going to keep with Valvoline EP series… 🇺🇸
👍🏻😎 I figured it was going to be Valvoline 1st and Mobil 1 last. Valvoline has been a solid motor oil for 40 years. Mobil 1 has dropped in quality over the years. That being said, I still choose Super Tech 10,000 mile 5w30 for my 06 Vic. $20 for 5 quarts is very hard to beat price wise and performance wise. Before that I was a big Castrol Syntec 5w50 user during the 90's. After BP took over and Castrol reformulated Syntec in the late 90's and it looked much darker than the original formula did and I didn't like the look of new oil that looked dirty right out of the bottle. 2000 was the year I switched to Super Tech. I had 5 vehicles by then and the cost of upkeep became important to keep under control but still have a quality product protecting my engines. Super Tech delivers both.
Funny, I have the MolyGen Green Oil in my 2022 F-150 Now, and I just Purchased that Valvoline Extended Protection 5W30. It'll go in Next. Didn't notice anything as far as Noise or start up Rattle Issues that are any better than the Factory Oil that when I dumped it out Looked Like GEAR OIL? Great Video Rich, and as far as the Valvoline goes, I actually used it in an OLD Model "A" FORD back in the Day. Straight Non Detergent 20W Oil in that old 4 Banger. (That I Personally Built) with an OLD TIMER showing me the Tricks of the TRADE. I'll Probably Switch and Just use the Valvoline Extended 5W30 in my 2022 F-150.V6 EcoBoost.
I use Valvoline full synthetic advance 5W-30 with Dexos 1 Gen3 for my 2002 GMC sierra 1500 pickup truck and it works but before I started using Valvoline ,I was using super tech full synthetic advance 5W30 dexos 1 Gen3 over 4years and I change my oil every 5000 miles but around 2000 to 3000mile intervals my engine oil level gets low so I switch to Valvoline and I noticed the engine didn’t burn a quart of engine oil until round 4000 miles per quart. I am sticking with Valvoline full synthetic advance engine oil. It works. By any chance, are you doing an oil lab results for the super tech full synthetic and full synthetic advance engine oil?
@@FordBossMe also do you think if you did half Castrol edge 5w30 and half Valvoline 5w30 oil in a oil change interval that the both additive packages together would be good for a engine?
Based on the data alone. Mobil 1 EPs additive package seems lacking quite a bit in every department. I’d almost expect to see elevated wear compared to the rest. Valvoline had a huge slug of Calcium. It’s a touch high for an SP/SN+ oil but should not be excessively high to cause LSPI issues. I like the overall additive package. The Castrols were very close to one another and probably could be interchanged based on availability or cost. I don’t think there was enough difference in those two. The LiquiMoly did little to impress me when I consider the cost but the oil still was light years better than Mobil 1 EP.
I just switched to supertech 0w-20 high mileage on my last oil change. seems fine so far. IT was the "10,000" mile rated version not the 20,000. i had been running Pennzoil platinum high milage 0w-20... if anything your results prove here why i really never buy Mobil 1, almost all choices are the same if not better haha
1. Valvoline extended protection!!!!! Winner!!! Awesome. I’ll try it this year. First time using synthetic will be at 95,000. Usually Valvoline conventional at 3,750 per manual intervals. 15 years in after conventional
Mobil has a cool silver bottle and they do a great job of advertising. That’s about where it ends for Mobil 1 . The only other thing Mobil 1 is great at it costing more than better oils .
I was loyal to that 5W30 Molygen, I did 5 k intervals with it but used to be much cheaper so I plan to go with Ultra platinum now. I order in large quantities since everything around me uses 5W30 which is convenient. Also the specs seemed very disappointing for that oil which was another reason.
i got a GR supra. il be adding a Redline euro spec 5w-30. trying to avoid LSPI. Which oil would you recommend for the best anti-wear/anti-friction add pack?
Thanks. It’s interesting with the new API SP and ILSAC GF-6 gasoline ratings along with LSPI the calcium levels have come way down and the magnesium levels gone way up.
A question that I haven’t come across the answer to yet, in my limited skimming of comments in car videos is, if you’re making a bunch of stops around a small town like I live in, is it better to turn your car off each time, not allowing your car to reach normal operating temperature? Or say it’s like 2 or 3 stops in a 2 to 3 mile radius, should you just leave your car idling when you’re in the store for like 10 minutes each stop? I ask because I do these short trips around town often and would like to hear which is the least harmful for the car
I should have stated before that I don’t have a great deal of car knowledge. I just know both practices aren’t good. Love your channel! Looking forward to getting some info from people who reply
ZzDp? Not sure I am writing that correctly. However with my 302 I am thinking something was not around as much based on the flat tappets config and the metal found something to bond to or gummed up the lifter and caused the push rod to bend. Need to watch these more for sure! Love it! Be blessed!
The efforts and expense you have gone through are admirable. Without getting into a TBN discussion one of the reasons for Mobil's low number is the low Calcium. High Calcium is a direct contributor to LSPI and associated issues thus the reduction in all SP rated oils. What Mobil has done with their EP line is blend both Group 3 and the more expensive Group 4 base oil into the product. Last, its all about the balancing act of the total package from the base oils used to the additive package.
Thanks for taking the time Rich out of your day to educate the masses. I can honestly say I was surprised the M1 was last. I've been using it for years but I may switch to Castrol or valvaline now. Again appreciate your time, Cheers from Canada!
Valvoline is awesome. If you have a turbo engine i would suggest the castrol though. Occording to other tests Castrol tends to be the best when it come to fuel pollution and shearing which is common in turbo engines. You cant go wrong with either.
I would hesitate to judge Mobil 1 just off this voa. It’s said in the bitog forum that Mobil 1 ep has 70% pao content which is significantly higher than most other oils on the market. Mobil may run less anti wear additives because the base oil is significantly better. Just my .10 I’m not brand loyal I run whatever is on sale for 4-5k runs with the best filter I can buy at Wally World
I am using Total Quartz 9000 XT 5W30 in my car right now. Car runs smoother than the Mobil1 I put in before. A but tricky to find because they just recently introduced into the North American Market from France. But I hope soon will be at chain stores.
@@FordBossMe Didn't know that before,Thanks! I have the API certified version of the one pictured with Dexos 1 approval. Euro spec oils are made in Europe, the North American spec oils are made in the USA. Total tends to name their products after numbers.
If possible you should get a spreadsheet going that can rank every oil and present it like Torque Test Channel does, so as you keep testing each run can go in a spreadsheet and be re-ranked as new ones are added. Just a thought!
Hi there! I followed your tutorial . I, in Romania, have been using Triax Euro Ultra 5W-30 oil for a month. It is the best oil I have used so far and it is the first MADE IN USA. I also noticed that in the USA Synthetic SRT oil is used What can you tell me about this company, about their oils? How is it perceived in America?
It's not a very big name here but it is a very big oil I am actually currently running it right now and I have a 5 gallon jug of it that I want to send off and get tested so that should be coming soon
As a 3rd generation mechanic and engine builder. None of this matters. Use any synthetic oil, any filter and change every 5k miles and exceed all your engine requirements!!
It’s more about changing oil regularly and keeping at a correct level. We have service vehicles, hot shot service, with over 400k miles. We use O’Reilly’s store brand Dino oil in everything.
Great video...👍 I do have a few questions though, This test was for 5w30, would you think the specs are the same for 5w20? My vehicle is a 2016 Ford Transit with a 3.7, and 60k on the clock, it calls for 5w20 synthetic blend, I've been using Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend every 3k mi.(despite the oil light triggering at 6k), and Motocraft filter FL500S It's a work van so stop and go, long idles, short trips etc etc. In your opinion is there a better oil for that engine? Your advice would be much appreciated.
About Liquimoly, I think that the additive in Molygen is more Tungsten, which Blackstone doesn't really test for in terms of additives. Tungsten is a replacement for Moly, so I've heard.
If you had to pick 1: Royal Purple vs Valvoline. About to do an oil change and want to try one of those. Nice to see you digging the Fram Ultra. I use them and never had a problem.
Well Pennzoil yes it is such an amazing oil the ultra formula it would be tough between Valvoline extended performance or Advanced protection and the Pennzoil Ultra
Gotta love Black Rifle coffee... definitely a good way to start the day off. Enjoy👍 I'm hoping you plan on testing the Pennzoil Platinum and Platinum Ultra. Would also like to see you send a sample of one of the oils with the proper ratio of BG M.O.A. added to it to see how it changes the oils characteristics. Would be really awesome to see a "with BG M.O.A." and "without BG M.O.A." comparison... Thanks for all you do Rich! 🙂
Eventually all that is going to get done but remember my initial testing was on oil that had 5,000 miles on it so some of that stuff is already done but on used testing not new
@@FordBossMe Good deal, Rich. 👍 My techs are seeing some pretty amazing results with BG Dynamic Engine Cleaning service in our shop down here in North Aurora. Can't wait to see the results you get back with the M.O.A. added to the oil.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they were all made in the same factory. You really can’t go wrong though with an API and ILSAC certified oil changed out at appropriate intervals.
Love your content. I did notice in my '20 Sorento, in which I bought new, the pinging issue. I hate the direct injection. I use mid grade or premium Mobil or Chevron or Shell and Speedway and RaceTrack once every blue moon. the very reason for the premium fill ups are for the Kia. I think they put less ethanol in the premium because I do notice a slight difference with power, mpg and responsiveness but I still hear pinging on the first tap on the gas or sometimes changing gears. Makes me wonder. What I learned here is that some oils reduce pinging and I'm not surprised that's true by somehow "sealing" up the cylinder walls better or using thinner oils will help reduce pinging by literally burning the damn oil that's being diluted in the first place. or something. I use the full synthetic 10w30 super tech on everything I own. My expedition has 249690miles on it and I add the synthetic stp oil stabilizer every oil change and it never pings. I only know the first owner did decent with maintenance from the receipts kept. So maybe I use that Dexos approved super tech 5w30 on the Sorento and see somehow if that helps with the pinging. Everyone on my block thinks I put cheap gas in. Lol. I just want some credit for treating my baby good, ya know?
Do a search for 540 rat oil test . It's long but a very good read on today's oil and their additive packages . 540 rat gives his credentials and his testing . He has tested racing oil for several NASCAR teams when they were having wear issues from the oil they were using . It is a long read but worth it . The next to last section is his results on the top performers . There are several hundred oils that were tested and ranked . He also tested various oils with some of the additives you can use today and his results of the oils performance with these additives will surprise you to the results .
Don’t know if you will see this or not, I have a 23 Tacoma and I want to keep it literally until one of use dies, the truck or me lol. I changed at 2500, 5200 and now going to do my 10k soon. So ultra platinum, valvoline or amsoil signature to get me too 300k+ ?
Rich, I think you can’t fix my 16 f150! It’s not broke! I wish you could see what was in my catch can the other day, dirty side! It was almost running over with this milky looking substance! I installed two on this 3.5, at 70,000, have 76,000 now! Last oil change was 73,499, and their was just a few drops in the catch can! Watched you get on that cluster last night with rainman! Boy they scrambling to get your sound going! I agree! Best thing that happened to Ray was getting fired! That was marriage counseling at its best!
Excellent and very detailed video I do have one question when you say you would go with Valvoline would be your first choice would that be based on considering you would have like say an aluminum block aluminum piston aluminum heads what would you do on a motor that would be cast heads and block???
In about any or all friction modifiers additive have high amounts of boron, zinc, sodium and potassium. If you add these additive and don't tell your oil tester they will hint you may have a coolant leak/coolant enters/contamination in the system.
@Ford Boss Me wish people would pay more attention to people that actually test and put the money and time instead of listening to sale pitches. You definitely try informing other which I like.
I have created an open Dropbox Adobe file so I can start scanning these results and putting them in PDF form so everybody can click on them and share them directly from my Dropbox

😅😅😅 Thanks.

Did it help?
The Gold Bottle Castrol, 5W30 Castrol Titanium Extended Performance is the way with Lucas High Milage Oil Stabilize.
God Bless🙏
I’m a huge fan of Valvoline Extended Protection and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Full Synthetic
Mobil 1 fan boy here! Feeling a little deflated. Facts are facts though and I’ll be switching to Valvoline synthetic. Thanks for the info!
Yvw
Same for me
Ye mobile 1 fan boy too… been using penzoil ultra platinum recently for my truck but gunna use valvoline for my 4runner haha
I like to hear this....I've been using Valvoline synthetic for 20 years. 3000 mile oil changes in everything I've owned and always seem to get 200-300k out of my vehicles and my engines look almost new inside.
I get 250-300k using conventional every 3-5k.
@@georgewetzel4380 Me too, using Havoline!
I always come back and watch these oil videos. 😊
I’ve used Castrol Edge synthetic for years in my 02 Camaro SS and still going great at 240,000 miles 😊
Been using Castrol since 73 ans I am 73 lol. Really like the edge. Currently using Kendall cuz retired myself for fun with my town car peace.
@@Brandon_Nelson92 sounds like it freed up the piston rings
Awesome thanks so much for putting this out there. I’ve been using Valvoline oils for a long time and never had any issues.
Than you for taking the time to research these different motor oils. Your explanation of the different additives and what they do was clear and concise. Hope the knee is feeling better!
Hello,
First, thank you for your work, it is very helpful.
Very well done sir! Love your channel! I watch every video you and Ray put up.👍👍 Keep it coming. Especially love the oil and oil filter content.
I agree, thanks for this. I have good luck for Quaker State for a number of 300K+ engines. But, this was quite interesting. I agree with your assessments.
You are fast becoming my favorite to watch on you tube. Great areas of auto repair and good
general information. Many blessing to your shop and family. Thanks for letting us look over
your shoulder.
Great video man. Wasn't too surprised that Valvoline won. All of their packages change every couple years, but Valvoline almost always has the best additive packs, and Mobil always add the bare minimum. They'll all work, but if your engine is direct injection or turbo charged then you really need the best.
I started using valvoline extended protection in my ram 1500 because of what I read about the additives. So far so good
Great information. I ran the Castrol Edge for years. Great oil. That and royal purple. I know when I switched to Castrol Edge on my 170k Corolla it quoted down a ton on cold start ups. Thanks for the review Boss!
You have the most thorough information I have heard since I took a machinery lubrication class with Noria great job
Wow, thank you!
I'm so glad # 3 Castrol Magnetec is very good as it's my budget oil on special here in Australia. So Happy ! 🙂
I just continue dropping my oils, depending on vehicles, at 5k and 3.5k
Something I was taught 50+ yrs ago.....Oil is the Cheapest Thing that Gives the Most Protection.
I always get really good Dry Starts with Pennzoil and I know they use a good amount of Zinc, so I guess this explains why I do.
Boom!!! The Valvoline I sent ya came out on top!!!
Thanks, interestingly me too. Though just relocated to HELENA MT six years ago ( from WARSAW IND)
@@opera93 awesome. My wife and I visit Warsaw from time to time (hacienda)
Hahaha 😁 😆
Nice video!! Keep up the good work!! 👍

That's not scottys advice, that's industry standard
Just recently found your channel; great content! I’ve definitely been a Mobil 1 guy for years however recently I’ve noticed it seems like there quality has gone down. After watching this I’m going to switch to Castrol Edge EP in my vehicles as that has been my #2 pick over the years when M1 is out of stock.
Valvoline Advanced Valvoline extended protection and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum have all been my top three oils so far of your affordable kind
Wow that blows my mind I'm 58 and I noticed every time I changed my oil in the past valvoline was very dirty,, Iooks like I was wrong.. Hey thanks for what your doing Rich..
Dirty oil is good. It means the oil is suspending the particulates vs depositing them elsewhere in the engine.
Happy with my choice and going to keep with Valvoline EP series… 🇺🇸
nice! id love to know how the valvoline extended protection stacks up against Pennzoil ultra platinum
Thanks for this review. I am switching to Valvoline.
Thanks for doing these tests👍. Great Info!👍
Thank you!
I love that stuff in my Sierra
Great unbiased video, hard to get real information these days. I just subscribed.
Thanks for the sub!
@@FordBossMe your welcome, thank you for the No BS INFORMATION and taking the time to do it and share.
Rich, did I miss the evaluation on Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 since the API SP designation has come out?
They use the money for advertising rather than quality
I remember back in the day the Ford 300 , 352 , 360 ,390 265 , 289 , 302, the Valvoline oils worked great for these engines , dam I miss those engines
Thanks for the video Rich. Super informative!
You should try Valvoline advance 5W-30 it's got double the Molly that liquid Molly has from liquid Molly
Would you still prefer Pennzoil Ultra Platinum over others? And which filter do you find is the better one?
OE or Puralator Boss and it's hard for me to pick between the 3 honestly
i got a GR supra. il be adding a Redline euro spec 5w-30. trying to avoid LSPI. Which oil would you recommend for the best anti-wear/anti-friction add pack?
Informative review, good to know. I'd like to see an oil report on 5w/30 Motorcraft Synthetic Blend.
Motorcraft is made by Phillips 66 (Conico Phillips). There top notch oil is Kendall full synthetic.
I will put that out in the morning
Well another reason is the quality of the base stock
But it's still schit oil
Nobody likes it anymore
Quaker State Full Synthetic (gold cap) would be a great oil to be tested, specially by the price point.
Great suggestion!
Thanks for taking the time Rich out of your day to educate the masses. I can honestly say I was surprised the M1 was last. I've been using it for years but I may switch to Castrol or valvaline now. Again appreciate your time, Cheers from Canada!
Right on
Valvoline is awesome.
Just my .10 I’m not brand loyal I run whatever is on sale for 4-5k runs with the best filter I can buy at Wally World
I do what I do and I don't ask just anyone for advice
I think Mobil 1 has been trading on the name for a while. I like valvolines easy pour jug, but liqui molys jug might be a little bit nicer.
I am using Total Quartz 9000 XT 5W30 in my car right now. Car runs smoother than the Mobil1 I put in before. A but tricky to find because they just recently introduced into the North American Market from France. But I hope soon will be at chain stores.
If you look in the community tab you can see I just posted the total quarts I'm going to try it out
@@FordBossMe Didn't know that before,Thanks!
Great information! Love those coffee flavors! GOD BLESS AMERICA!
Hi there!
I followed your tutorial . I, in Romania, have been using Triax Euro Ultra 5W-30 oil for a month. It is the best oil I have used so far and it is the first MADE IN USA.
I also noticed that in the USA Synthetic SRT oil is used
What can you tell me about this company, about their oils? How is it perceived in America?
It's not a very big name here but it is a very big oil I am actually currently running it right now and I have a 5 gallon jug of it that I want to send off and get tested so that should be coming soon
As a 3rd generation mechanic and engine builder. None of this matters. Use any synthetic oil, any filter and change every 5k miles and exceed all your engine requirements!!
Oh gosh here we go
It’s more about changing oil regularly and keeping at a correct level. We have service vehicles, hot shot service, with over 400k miles. We use O’Reilly’s store brand Dino oil in everything.
Yes and no
Some engines run better with certain oils
@@FordBossMe My point wasn’t Dino oil for everything, it was brand doesn’t matter as much as regular maintenance.
Thank you for all of the videos!!👍🏼👍🏼
Great video...👍
I do have a few questions though,
This test was for 5w30, would you think the specs are the same for 5w20?
My vehicle is a 2016 Ford Transit with a 3.7, and 60k on the clock, it calls for 5w20 synthetic blend, I've been using Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend every 3k mi.(despite the oil light triggering at 6k), and Motocraft filter FL500S
It's a work van so stop and go, long idles, short trips etc etc.
In your opinion is there a better oil for that engine?
Your advice would be much appreciated.
The specs are typically the same until you drop down to 0w numbers
About Liquimoly, I think that the additive in Molygen is more Tungsten, which Blackstone doesn't really test for in terms of additives. Tungsten is a replacement for Moly, so I've heard.
Thanks for all you do!
Very informative! Thank you!
If you had to pick 1: Royal Purple vs Valvoline. About to do an oil change and want to try one of those. Nice to see you digging the Fram Ultra. I use them and never had a problem.
Valvoline
I am actually going back and forth with castrol and valvoline, for my GMC when i had my ram he was getting Penzoil
Excellent! Curious though-- would you chose Valvoline over the Penzoil you had in the car before the testing began?
Well Pennzoil yes it is such an amazing oil the ultra formula it would be tough between Valvoline extended performance or Advanced protection and the Pennzoil Ultra
Gotta love Black Rifle coffee... definitely a good way to start the day off. Enjoy👍
I'm hoping you plan on testing the Pennzoil Platinum and Platinum Ultra.
My techs are seeing some pretty amazing results with BG Dynamic Engine Cleaning service in our shop down here in North Aurora. Can't wait to see the results you get back with the M.O.A. added to the oil.
Great breakdown of results !
I’d like to see Napa synthetic,Oreilly synthetic and super tech go up against each other
I wouldn’t be surprised if they were all made in the same factory. You really can’t go wrong though with an API and ILSAC certified oil changed out at appropriate intervals.
Sorry I’m old school, all I use in my vehicles is Amsoil.
Amsoil is OK
Hey! For anti foaming comment on Valvoline… do other additives prevent foaming or would it foam during short drives ?
It can foam any time
Do a search for 540 rat oil test .
Question: Pennzoil Platinum Ultra or Castrol Edge gold jar? Thanks!
Ultra
Great job
Don’t know if you will see this or not, I have a 23 Tacoma and I want to keep it literally until one of use dies, the truck or me lol. I changed at 2500, 5200 and now going to do my 10k soon. So ultra platinum, valvoline or amsoil signature to get me too 300k+ ?
Thank you for this indepth study
Ethanol is one of the worst things you can do to your engine it gives you crappie gas mileage and it truly is a bad thing for smaller engines.

In about any or all friction modifiers additive have high amounts of boron, zinc, sodium and potassium. If you add these additive and don't tell your oil tester they will hint you may have a coolant leak/coolant enters/contamination in the system.
Silicon is a antifoaming agent and every sample is labeled virgin for a good test base
They know when labeled correctly
@Ford Boss Me wish people would pay more attention to people that actually test and put the money and time instead of listening to sale pitches. You definitely try informing other which I like.
