Hervey Bay is a great place to encounter Humpbacks. We went there about twenty years ago and the boat was surrounded by a pod of whales. It was a group of males with a solitary female, and the males were showing off and pushing each other around quite a bit so it was rather exciting. Lots of vocalising there too but mostly hooting. They swam under the boat which had a glass bottom, so the views were pretty spectacular. They spent quite a bit of time going round and round the boat. We also observed spy hopping and as we were leaving a couple of the bulls broached spectacularly. The guides said we were very lucky as it had been quite a singular day. The memory of a lifetime and something I would recommend to anyone. They seemed very curious about humans. When we motored back a pod of dolphins swam in the bow wake, leaping out of the water and turning on their sides so they could see us. Astonishing.
Not many people are talking about how Vocal the mom is being? It's like she's also trying to communicate with the people who are watching and waving at them! That's so adorable, I wish I could get this experience if I ever go whale watching

The Tasman Venture is THE best boat for Whale Watching .. we try to do it every year. There are others but they have the best facilities on board and yet it's still less than its competitors. I highly recommend it : )

Just their way of trying to interact with these majestic animals. Plus it would seem like the people don’t have personality if they didn’t. Not wrong to show emotions and gratitude. It takes more strength to show emotions than to be scared trying to act cool, or trying to fit in like a nobody.
Was whale watching once and capt. stopped the boat with no visible animals. He said that there was a cow with calf who likes to come over to the boat to be petted! Sure enough. She soon appeared, came over alongside the boat, rolled on her side to look at all of us, put up her fin and waved at us. She then rolled back and stayed by the boat as we reached over to touch her. She then left and came back with her calf ! Capt. said she had been returning to those waters for a few years.
this is hervey bay Queensland Australia. Every July, August is the whales migration season, they come up from Antartica to have their babies. This is a yearly event, anywhere along the Eastern coast of Australia, just some places a re more secure than others, and the whales know it!!!

We asked if they take a shortcut into Harvey Bay or if they swim around Fraser and back when we went on our tour. Our guide said some take the shortcut and some swim around. Does anyone know for sure? Has anyone seem them swim in through Inskip?
It's where they take there calfs as it's a safe place for them and they can teach there calf's how to do whale things and what not. so yes they do take it as a shorcut
The thing with humpbacks is they don't all sound the same. They're very much like people having their own accents, vocal pitches, and are constantly evolving their calls as well. Especially male humpbacks who spend their lifetimes developing very unique and complex calls to serenade females.
