False Killer Whale Catches Mahi Mahi

  • Edit 10/1/2020 Please Note I have responded to some comments claiming we had injured this fish prior to the video, but I'm just going to explain here and be done with it.
    We absolutely did not interact with these mahi mahi in any way. We did not catch them and deoxygenate them. We did not spear them. We did not gaff them. The wounds on the mahi mahi are from the false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) a species of oceanic dolphin. Mahi mahi are actually the most frequently documented prey of these amazing marine mammals (Baird, 2016, "The Lives of Hawai'i's Dolphins and Whales"). These predators use pack hunting and stamina to wear the incredibly fast mahi mahi down. The fish were indeed trying to use us (and our boat) for cover, but the whales always had the upper hand. An incredible experience that we were absurdly fortunate to witness.
    Encounters with various pelagic critters near Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Video by Ian Roussopoulos and Tyler Bledsoe.

      I’m not sure if it’s entirely benevolent. They very well could be communicating about something, but it also could be territory disputes for food resources. Notice you don’t see the rough-toothed dolphins when the pilot whales are getting the mahi mahi.
      I’m not an expert on cetaceans though, and also i have no clue whether pilot whales and false killer whales are different or not lol
      EDIT: pilot whales and false killer whales are not the same. Who knows what they were doing with the dolphins.

      @1323 V Despite all that, people still refer ro them as whales. For those who keep saying it was caught and released before the recording, a message from some mahi mahi anglers and marine biologists:
    Mahi mahi produce a lot of heat from all their giant spastic muscles trying to break loose from the line. When combined with their inability to radiate heat, this causes them to overheat and die.
    The mahi mahi in the video were exhausted and injured by dolphin teeth, not humans.
    The reason it swam on its side is likely because it had been dragged into deep water (by dolphins) before they started recording it, so its swim bladder (the organ that keeps fish swimming upright) was busted and filling with blood and/or water.
    At no point in the video can you see the shine of a hook or ripples from the fishing line cutting along the water's surface.

The water is also colder the deeper you go, so prey move slower.

    Such disappointing comments "imagine being a fish.." News flash, wild animals aren't buried like humans, they're eaten by the other wild animals. Getting upset that some divers got to witness a very interesting predation with interaction AND while filming from multiple angles but folks are upset at the diver's excitement. Its just soo sad that people think with their feelings instead of their brain. I blame Disney and video games for warping children's realities

So go ahead and volunteer yourself as a meatshield for the prey animal. Your emotional response to save the prey animal will not stop the determined predator in hot pursuit.

      Good catch. I looked at 3:06 in the video again, put it on .25 speed to see if the video was clear enough to confirm gaff marks instead of cookie-cutter shark bites, and it is hard to tell. The front mark doesn't look as clean as a usual cookie cutter shark bite, while the rear one might be. The one on the bottom definitely is a cookie cutter shark bite, but a good case for being a gaffed male mahi could be made just by the front mark. I tried to see if there were any fishing line marks around the mouth but I didnt see any.

    • @madscient1st349
      @madscient1st349  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Amy Richard not gaff marks, those are whale tooth holes. The mahi had been getting chased and beat up by the whales for about 30 minutes before this video was shot. The mahis were very much not up to speed but that was all the whales doing, not ours. Mahi mahi are the most documented prey species of false killer whales. They need no help from us.
