- Iowa State Patrol confirmed four people were killed in Greenfield and another person died south of there Tuesday after several tornadoes rolled through Iowa.

I’ve been wondering about the guy/lady who drove into the tornado in a tanker truck and it disappeared. Hope they’re ok.
Facebook LOST and FOUND should be set-up for people to reach out to total strangers for help or to give help by collecting items on your properties that were dropped from the sky in the tornado. Family pictures/valuables etc.
I thought the same thing. If it was me searching for my items in the rubble I would definitely pick up any pictures. Those precious memories of baby pictures, and pictures of loved ones who have passed 😭

Does the government or anyone keep a running count on how many people lose their homes due to storms whether or not they have insurance, or ask for help from FEMA and how many business are lost due to being destroyed? We already have a housing shortage nation wide. Seems like this year has been particularly bad leaving so many homeless

I’m no expert, but I think the insurance companies track that and then communicate those findings to the government and whoever else.
News recently reported that Iowa had four major insures that are no longer carrying Iowans due to the storms/damage we’ve had in the past years. Wild.

So, then, theoretically, an EF5 wind speed in a totally rural area, nothing but fields or prairie plains, would ostensibly not officially be rated an EF5 due to minimal structural damage?

That's how the EF scale works. By damage only. Even if the winds were measured at 250mph by a mobile doppler unit. The Minden/Harlan tornado on the 26th also was sampled by the DOW truck and its wind was around 220mph which is also EF-5 speeds, but it was not rated that high because the places it did hit was not consistent for an EF-5.

NOT Fuh-JET-Ah scale! Fu-JEET-ah! I'm astounded a degree-carrying meteorologist can't properly pronounce the most famous name in tornado research and more importantly, having no doubt heard it countless times during his supposed education.
Why do the people live in such flimsy houses?
Seriously??
Alot of those homes have stood such weather for 50 to 100 years, and were built much stronger than "flimsy" homes built today. The extreme power of tornados are far above our imaginations. This tornado swung vehicles around like toys.
Because 99.99 days out of 100 the "flimsy" house isn't being hit by an EF3+ tornado and provides for an affordable home. Homes need to be built with the everyday in mind, not to deal with fraction of 1% ever happening circumstances for which in all honesty, a studier structure is still going to be rendered uninhabitable.
And considering this question gets asked almost verbatim every time a tornado hits anywhere, it's time to confirm such questions aren't the inquiries of the genuinely curious, but the work of trolls or spambots. It's honestly getting tiresome.

I agree homes aren't built like they used to be, but even the best built homes sometimes can't survive the strength of mother nature.
I was just thinking that, if the houses were built of bricks or concrete blocks and reinforced with rebars/concrete, they. might be a bit more tornado-proof.
