Sinéad’s death has affected me like no other musical artists death has. I’ve been gutted since it happened, and my head plays Troy on a loop. We didn’t deserve Sinéad, but I’m glad we had her. Her story is heartbreaking but inspiring at the same time.

Sinead was such a treasure. She fought for victims of SA and got a lot of backlash for it. We kind of failed her. This song also reminded me of a group I don't think you've reacted to yet. Garbage is a powerhouse female-led group with a string of hits. Check out "I Think I'm Paranoid"

Fair play on the keening reference! Keening was performed at traditional wakes and funerals by the elder women of the parish. It comes from the Gaelic word for crying. It was a very raw emotional and expressive. There is another style of singing here called Seán Nós which is performed at pubs and gatherings. Irish people aren’t particularly shy about getting up and singing unaccompanied in public (whether you want them to or not!) I think these styles and the Irish tradition really informs the voices of Irish artists. OConner was sublime.

You seem to have a Siouxsie Sioux shaped hole in your strong female voices collection. Siouxsee & The Banshees is somewhat of an “acquired taste” but they were HUGELY influential in the late 70s and 80s punk/new wave scene. Here are some song suggestions.
    Best song: Cities In Dust
Most accessible: Kiss Them For Me
    Weird wildcard: Peek-A-Boo
Also fun: Hong Kong Garden or Dear Prudence (Beatles cover)

I've requested "I Am Stretched On Your Grave" a few times. It's not one of her more well-known songs, but it is SO amazing. It's an old Irish poem set to music and there's a live version of it where she does a little jig at the end that is just so charming and cool.

"the Last Day of our Acquaintance", Emperor's new clothes", "Daddy I'm Fine"... although that last song is an uplifting one, in light of her struggles of late, it's now kind of sad to hear now. I played her first album on a loop when it came out in '88(?), and she remains one of my favorite artists to this day. I saw Sinead OConnor live at the very beginning of her career in a small theatre in Liverpool, UK in 1987. She was supporting INXS. She was a very troubled soul and was difficult to watch as she was so incredibly angry but I could hear that her voice was absolutely exceptional! Beautiful. A totally unique and deliberately misunderstood (by the business) person. She fought against what she thought was wrong and was let down. I hope she has peace now with her beautiful son xx

LOVE THIS SONG! RIP Sinead! Next try "Emperer's New Clothes". Just some background on this song. Sinead wrote this song after watching the movie Roots and feeling a connection with the Civil Rights movement. The Mandinka Tribe in Africa was known for its rich history in music and so she connected the two with this song. While Sinead was viewed negatively by many because she was a strong, outspoken women who refused to allow the injustices of the Church and other issues go without a voice, she made her impact. Tearing up a picture of the Pope on Saturday Night Live got her a lot of hateful response by people who failed to understand that she was demanding the church do more to protect children from abusive priests. It was not an attack on the Pope himself but since he represented the church he had a responsibility to hold those who hurt children accountable. She was way ahead of her time.

It’s rooted in traditional music in Ireland. There’s a blurred line between rock ‘n’ roll, folk, and Trad music. You hear it in a tradition in Ireland called Sean-nós ( old style) everyone sings every kind of music in Ireland. The traditional music of Sean- nós influences everything you have to hear the music of The Corrs it’s all in the inflections in their voices keening is part of Sean nós it’s that flip in the Voice.

Her vocals were everything. She will be sorely missed. Love her. She always shared she wasn't a singer, but a protestor. She sang about things that mattered and she had a deep message always. Fave was always the powerful anthemtic female song Jerusalem! Oh my gosh that song!!!!!! Of course Nothing Compares to You is so deep and heartfelt. Her first album is brilliant.

Sinead was really talented. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea but no denying she could make you believe whatever she sang. Another artist from my younger years that left this world too quickly. I think of that song Vincent by Don Maclean and the sentiment of that beautiful song seems to echo her suffering and artistic creativity as well. I just watched a post on TH-cam of Sinead on a talk show back in 93 singing Danny Boy accapella and it was so incredibly moving. I highly recommend anyone to watch and listen. Thanks for a tribute to such a wonderful talent Amber and J!

Sinead was so much more that Nothing Compares 2U. I’m happy you are digging deeper. Troy is a definite, it’s a masterpiece. Three Babies is a beautiful song and video. I am Stretched on your Grave is my personal favorite, but I don’t think there is a video to it (?) Either way, I enjoy your reactions, it is a highlight of my evenings, so thank you!

Just in case anyone’s interested, I made this Sinéad playlist a while back. I think it’s pretty comprehensive and covers her career. I’ll note too that I have quite a few playlists, but Sinéads has been viewed 900,000 times last time I checked. And the diagnostics show it’s been viewed from all over the world. She was truly a Universal Mother. th-cam.com/play/PLGY1pEi8PtxR6MPSGlmVpOpAbExncQNJo.html

Bravo! I was prepared to come back and deride your list for not having "This is a rebel song), or "8 good reasons" on it, but you got them both!
They are both amazing as is "Heroine" with U2's the Edge.
In fact there are at least 10 songs on your list that I think are much better than the one everyone knows her for.

@@robertcrawford1791 that is actually what I was expecting, and what would have disappointed me.
someone says they are a huge Sinead fan and yet never heard "8 good reasons" or "Take me to church" or "This is a rebel song", or never even listened to her album "Gospel Oak" for that matter.
They were just fans when it was cool to be a Sinead fan.

Loved your reaction! Fun fact, Dolores O’Riordan was a huge Sinead O’Connor fan and used one of her songs “Troy” to audition for the band, which subsequently formed The Cranberries. She and Sinead were later friends. Her family posted. A very nice story about them when they heard of Sinead O’Connor‘s passing. Someone else suggested watching this song live, I highly suggest that. Her Grammys performance of Mandinka is perfection!
