This video is a prime example for you: No real serious work, no real wheeling (other than highway skating) and your loyal fan club is still here, watching, liking and commenting. Do what you do, film it, and we'll watch. We don't need hollywood production, just Danglearm Dave doing Danglearm Dave stuff.
You made the right decision turning back, a wheeling weekend isn't worth getting wrecked over. Living in the Canadian Maritimes, we live with those conditions all winter long, studded winter tires on the daily driver handle the icy roads much better. Oversize mud terrains on a small truck is not the recipe for ice covered roads.
Truthfully those huge exposed tires throwing winter rocks all over the place, is not ideal either! he's got a new super duty and trailer for the Mazda to arrive like royalty.
Hey Welcome to being a mature adult! Seriously Dave you did a great thing by turning around and the lesson is "Know Your Limit" and I am sure some young people watching will feel better if they have the same situation. Well Done..
I taught defensive driving for years. Out rule of thumb was safe following distance for dry roads - 3 seconds, rain -6 seconds, snow - 12 seconds, and ice - stay home. I know I sound old, but there are a lot of people in a hurry all of the time. There is less consideration for others, and most people dont know the first thing about safely operating vehicles in varying conditions. You made a wise choice. Live to wheel another day.
I fled Washington State almost eight years ago. HOWEVER, I do miss the snow and ice and chaos that comes with winter time LOL. Working at an auto dealership as a Parts Manager I absolutely LOVED the big body orders and all the control arms that I sold during the icy days LOL. Good Call being safe and just returning to your abode - very responsible, sir!!
I had a new 87 B2600 4x4 in high school. I beat on it everyday and it never left me stranded. So Maz Grande brings back a ton of memories. Do what you do and I will definitely watch...
That's maturity & wisdom Dave -- no apologies needed -- I can usually deal with snow but ICE is always a "no go" for me. Enjoyed the tune up & prep work 👍
TDS, You made the perfect decision Dave. All the signs of turning around are in front of you. I'm sure all the viewers doesn't want to see you get hurt. Nice to see you made it home to your family👍. Looking forward for the next episode.
Back in the day, 2010, i used to trailer my snowmobiles to the UP of Michigan. The one thing I didn't like was the white knuckled driving across the Mackinaw bridge during whiteout conditions. I solved that by selling the snowmobiles and got jets skies instead.
Hardest thing to do sometimes is to back-out; whether driving, mountaineering or a scary first date: but you lived to fight another day. We used to get called out to the section of road 20 miles west of Medical Lake for motorcycles that literally got swept-up and blown off the highway and would rendevous for bad weather MVA's out where you turned around, tricky stretch of road!
Love this truck(can't wait for what's in store)and your others!!! I think turning back was a good lesson for the rest of us especially if we haven'tbern in such a situation. When "semi-trucks" cant stick to the ground then even your choice of back roads made more sense... look forward to the next vids!
Bummer on missing the wheeling trip but kudos for being smart and putting your safety first. But solo, backroads driving is also one of my favorite things to do. Keep doing your thing Dave!
If those headlights are anything like old xjs the problem is a voltage issue they make kits to change to a relay style harness and help boost voltage to make a big difference
You made the right decision coming back. Dave, you really need to inspect your vehicles way in advance before these trips! Safety first! Anyway, use your tow vehicle keep this one as a fun vehicle. Just a suggestion.
I used to do snow 'wheelin campouts with friends in Arizona and it was always impossible to predict whose rig would perform best when the other 11 months of the year we used them on dry rocks and sand. Sounds like you made the right choice on turning back when you did.
Hey my friend, just an FYI on those headlights. A lot of us buy those lights just for the ability to put in a good LED bulb. They usually come with a cheap halogen just for the sale. That's why they aren't very good.
Nothing wrong with knowing when to say when. Sometimes it happens, I've had to do it too. I've also shown up late at little sluice to friends hammered, broken rigs and bad decisions. Had to help tow them out the next day, and have those stories to share around a campfire with a good bottle and close pals. Cheers Dave!
Made the right call buddy! That ice is legit. Love the blue tool boxes! Those firefighters looked like they had their hands full on that building fire, they had multiple master streams deployed going defensive. Love the wisdom your throwing down on us!
I have purchased a bunch of h4 housings, from Hella to no name Amazon specials. I always swap in quality Sylvania h4 bulbs, because most of the cheap units come with terrible bulbs.
Yes I agree with you my friend . I have been a over the road truck driver for 47 years and somewhere between 9 to 11m miles across this great country we the people call HOME . ❤❤❤ 🎉🎉
Don;t beat yourself up. You made the right decision. All-wheel drive doesn't mean all-wheel stop. That's the thing that blows me away about people in modern cars. They think they are invincible in slippery conditions. You'll get the Grande sorted. Your safety and family comes first. Your friends know.
Back it off a notch. I love seeing this thing out and about (I checked it out at Moses Lake at the gas station on this trip). Such a cool truck. Glad you took it back home that day. It was pretty bad here in Moses Lake. Thanks for sharing 👍
driving my TJ across New Mexico one year for christmas going to Louisiana, hit a whole bunch of ice. short wheel base with mud tires makes for an interesting drive on ice 😀.Scariest drive I've done, saw sooo many cars and big rigs crashed off the side of the roads, I'm amazed that I made it (I don't have experience driving in Ice) Props to you for not pushing it, you don't even have to be the one who messes up to get into a wreck on ice, some dummy behind you might slam into you.
I did H4’s on my CJ7. Had to upgrade some wiring that led to some cool mods. Ran some BMW Glass housings, tapped the hi/low wires to run as signals for relays. Now my off-road lights take a signal from hi beams to supply power to my KC’s only when enabled, and hi beams are on. Reverse spot is only on when in reverse with high beams. My friend loves it. Not killing people while fumbling for switches is also nice.
@@thedirtheadshed @thedirtheadshed hahah dont feel sorrry, we were excited for you, but seeing what you went thru no reason to push it. We like fun danger not unnecessary danger like driving on a icy highway
You did the smart thing brother. We’ve had a couple of major snow dumps here on the Western Slope of CO… it can catch you out and sometimes discretion if the better part of valor. Love the channel.

You gotta watch bridges and culverts here in the frozen desolate wastelands! They condensation builds up there due to temp differences and that is always the slickest part of the road. You were about 45 minutes from me, I'd have thrown a steak on the fire for ya! heh heh heh Would be fun to tag along. Have a little driveline stuff to sort out, freshly lifted XJ with pinion preload loose, and possibly need a slip yoke eliminator..... by spring the project should be done tho. Just a month into ownership of it.
Love what your allowed to drive on the roads over there , we wouldn't get away with it here in the UK 🇬🇧🙁 would have to be trailered to a off road place . Keep the vids coming 👍
I had to cancel the trip too, but I just moved so I to adult and make sure bills were paid. There’s always next year man, BS isn’t going anywhere. It’s too good 😂
I've left my house with the tow rig and tube chassis buggy on the trailer and turned around 15 mins from the house and said nope, not today, let alone ripping the wheeler down I-90! Sometimes a guys just gatta trust his gut and live to wheel another day. And I live and wheel where you were headed if I had to make a guess on where in the center of WA you were going. Winter's not even here yet so you didn't miss out yet. Spring is really where we get excited for snow wheeling around here!
Sure don't miss that, I used to run to Moses from Spokane every morning a 3am in a semi pulling two empty trailers. You made the right call. The worst thing is cars will pass you doing 60 -70 mph not even aware there on ice then you see them on there roof.
You own 2 of my favorite rigs. The maz and what is now the jeep truck. I don't blame you at all for turning around. I have turned around for the same situation for more important stuff. Sometimes it's not worth it.

Great rule on paper until eveyone uses your "defence space" as an oportunity to cut in front of you. Happens every single time.
Good call ! It blows my mind how people continue to haul ass on icy roads even when they see wrecked cars and trucks everywhere.
The age old problem of: that doesn't affect me
it was wild seeing how many people ran full speed into the sketchy situation. no thanks.
