  • the highly requested topic is finally here, marriage! “when will you guys get married?” “do you want to get married someday?” these are questions we get pretty often in the comments / DMs. this is an episode that we’ve been meaning to record for a while now, so here we are! we get into what we think about marriage, we went through all the stages and steps from falling in love with someone, dating, proposing, being engaged, and finally being married. we gave our personal opinions on each stage and honestly just had a great conversation about this topic.
we understand that not everyone is going to agree with everything we’ve said in this episode and that there’s many cultural differences all over the world so please don’t take anything we say as disrespect or anything like that. We just wanted to have an honest conversation and share our thoughts
hope you enjoy this episode! :-)

I’ve been in a relationship for 7 years now and I totally agree that you don’t have to necessarily get married to call your partner “your family”. I think that for me, everything relies on the fact that I woke up every morning, I see the person next to me and I feel secure, happy and in peace✨

I had many people (older than me and my husband) tell us that everything is going to change and to get prepared... yet when we got married and now almost 2 years out, the one thing that stands out the most was having to refer to each other as husband/wife. Aside from that, our relationship has actually strengthened because we now consider ourselves as our own nuclear family.

you guys this is one of my favorite episodes🤩.. I've struggled for sooooo long to verbalize this topic to my friends (the idea of being a family with my partner without the traditional big wedding) to the point of hiding it from fear of judgement. We also had a very intimate ceremony with only my partner's mom and some champagne after! "It's a feeling first" Yoni put it perfectly, thank y'all for constantly going against the grain :))

Awesome! Congratulations! I am on the exact same wavelength as Alia when it comes to weddings/marriage. It can be hard when everyone in your extended family is a lot more traditional. Though, tbh, none of their marriages are happy/healthy.

Guys! Congrats!!! My partner and I been dating for 7 years and we do not want a wedding! We think it’s a waste of money and we’re both introverts so thinking about a wedding makes us anxious 😂 we prefer to just get married at a court house!! I personally don’t like being surprised so I don’t want a proposal! I’m happy to hear that not everyone wants a “traditional wedding” path

“So now you agree that you wanna get married , so go get married right “, this part took me out! But I’ve been saying the exact same things you guys are sharing. People genuinely complicate relationships for no reason. You can’t be a different person before and after getting married. It just doesn’t make sense.
    ♥️I enjoyed this podcast ♥️

Regarding the idea of marriage I would like to add that it is also important how the wedding ceremony is perceived in Western societies compared to non-Western and/or religious societies. The secular view looks at a wedding as a social agreement while those who come from a more traditional background regard the wedding as a sacred union ceremony and therefore also very significant in their lives, and then there is also a change in the perception regarding the relationship and how one sees the partner afterwards... I hope I was able to clarify myself

    • @Avigailish
      @Avigailish ปีที่แล้ว

And I'm interested in knowing why non-traditional people bother to get married? Because it is definitely a hassle in every way...Why not stay within the commitment you created for yourself independently? 😅

Congratulations!! I was working while listening to this episode and I literally said out loud “what!” when you said you’ve been married 🫶🏼 I’m so happy for you guys. Also, my husband and I have the same perspective on marriage as you two. He proposed me after I took a trash out (he was waiting for me to open the door). It wasn’t what “people” think of proposal, but to me, I was so surprised and will never forget that moment 😂Then we got married after 8 months dating. We both had no desire to get married at first but I guess once you meet someone who you truly love, it just happens. We asked husband‘s co worker to be a officiant and had a tiny ceremony (only 7 people were invited), but it was the most beautiful day I’ve ever had. Love you guys 🤍🤍

As someone who’s in there late 20’s, I agreee with everything y’all said! My husband and I got married at 22 years old, he wore a ring with me when we were engaged and I only wear a thin band(no Diamond) no wedding and we moved in together after only 3 months of dating. Also I appreciate how this podcast isn’t political like everyone else’s!

Now that I know Yoni reads all the comments I’ll address them to him! It’s just easier cause Alia is my girl😝 from day 1 on YT❤
I just wanna say guys, THIS is SO DOPE. I love all your podcasts but this one is so relatable to my story and how I met the love of my life!
I know I’m watching this a couple days late but I really want to hear every second of it😅 I did see the second it went live and I clicked on it immediately,” like” I was your first view and like🥰
Ok, so my husband and I reconnect via Facebook! Years ago we met when we were teens and I had such a crush on him- saw him shirtless playing his guitar and I was smitten at 16😍
He would always message me online, and we would chat, we got along 💯 all the time! I always knew we would be the best partner cause our core values were right there! We laughed every time we talked and tackled the deep 💩
Alright so I’m in my early 20s working in NY, have a two year old son from a broken relationship and he’s out in California with his brother. I have a vacation off work(worked in the food industry) and I fly out to Cali for a week. 5 days in WE GET MARRIED! When they say u know, u know!
On day 3, after staying up late every night ,eating mangos and sleeping under the stars, he told me he loved me and from that moment I knew what love was and discovered a feeling I never felt before in my life! We said, that’s it! Let’s do this thing called LIFE! So there we were,in half a field of weed with donkeys all around us. Us and the good old ground beneath us, in a Biblical sense or as u say in a VERY intimate way! We have never looked back! Today we have 3 children together and it’s been a wild ride! Ppl ask us all the time about wedding and a ring, it drives us nuts we are married, this is us. No I don’t want a white dress, I don’t feel like I’m missing out! I got a committed man! We’re already past our 5 year mark and we haven’t celebrated our union yet, but we’re gonna one of these days…
My goal now is to get to your 3.5 wedding anniversary cause you guys are my tribe 💯
I love your tattoos too and the story behind them, trying to convince my man to get one but he doesn’t know what he wants stuck on him for life besides me🤣 and I LOVE that u guys call each other a family! That 💩 is real! Like legit everything u said is LOVE! Girls don’t need a fancy diamond ring, they need an adventure buddy that’s crazy for them! I agree, use that money go on an epic trip together! Make memories that will last a lifetime for you two, rather then go into debt on a wedding that lasts one day but adds YEARS of stress to the relationship, maybe that’s what changes after marriage the bill lol
I do disagree about one thing, I’m an advocate for PDA, haha, not in teenager/groping and grabbing kinda way, but I’m an Italian woman and I like to reach and be reached for in public, it’s a compliment 💥
    Congratulations guys!!!
I knew that love was REAL ❤

I remember when my husband and I were starting to talk seriously about engagement and he started asking me about rings, he asked me how much I had in mind how much he should be spending on the ring. I am someone who has never been into a diamond ring, I personally think they aren't unique and don't have personality. I told him probably like $300-$400 tops and I remember after we did get engaged he told me he was so relieved because he was thinking he would spend around like $1000-2000 which is a lot in our book. I just can't even imagine having that much money on my finger at all times. He got me a beautiful alexandrite ring that has a purple stone in it and I couldn't love my ring more, it is so unique to me.

That’s definitely interesting! I’m kind of late to give an opinion but here I’m just discovering that u guys have a podcast and I’M LOVING IT ❤
So for the engagement part i would like to explain it ( as a Moroccan Muslim girl 🧕🏼🇲🇦) when the couple got engaged is when they start knowing each other more and more and they kind of get the acceptance from their parents to hang out more so automatically when you’re engaged its literally the period of time when u do start planning your weeding or from another perspective a lot of girls get engaged so they announce that they are taken meanwhile they continue their studies it’s a THING for us Muslim girlies so every little casual «Traditional » step of the process means a LOT to .but u know it’s a whole religious perspective which we love and respect 🫶🏼

My thoughts on marriage, I like the idea of marriage because of love which I feel is the reason for having the ceremony and party afterwards. BUT I feel the government gets involved for the same reason that people got married in the old days, a shared benefit. Like I started truly thinking of marriage with my current bf was to have shared health insurance, and to grow our retirement and financials together.

What Yoni said was absolutely correct it depends on cultures and religions. In some marriage is purely a form of social contract but in other cultures for example hindu, marriage is regarded as a sacrament as For such a sacred union to form, true and honoured companionship between individuals is necessary.

sooo i am someone who has been engaged for 4 years and being from europe i think expectations about getting married are a little different than they are in the states. i got engaged after being with my boyfriend for 5 months and at that point i could not say if i actually wanted to get married, because i did not believe in marriage and never thought it could be a thing for me. for us it is a promise to each other to get married at some point, but since then we had two kids and the focus shifted on them. i disagree with "the relationship should not change just because you are engaged'. things happen. priorities can change. mental health can get in the way of life. if i would not have been engaged there certainly were times where i would rather have been alone/not putting my problems on my partners shoulders. but maybe i just never had a good stable relationship before that :)
if i end up marrying him i want it to be because we want to get married and not because someone else expects us to. so i guess having children first helps with that. and as of right now, i would want to go to the courthouse with him alone and have a big party some other day, without any of those traditions, just celebrrrrating love 🎉🎉🎉

I am enjoying this ep, I was questioning marriage the same way, with the same questions, I do not get the whole thing and why people do it. And every time I asked, the reason was never good. And the legal part and the benefits you get when you get married is the major reason, and I would do it mostly cause of the benefits you get..
And what about the surname change? So ridiculous..

congrats on getting married! i do agree a lot with you guys, especially on the expensive rings, expectations etc. but to many cultures and religions marriage isn't just a piece of paper or a legal thing, to Christians for example it's a sacrament, i.e an "outward sign of Gods grace/goodness". its a spiritual bond per se. and usually engagements are just periods of time to prepare for the wedding especially when its a big event with tons of people. i guess those are the reasons why people are engaged for typically 6-12 months. just wanted to share perspective on that. hugs from Malaysia!

One thing I want to point out is you’re associating marriage with this legal side but marriage can be the ceremony the celebration of marriage wedding and all that is what is meaningful the legal stuff I think most would not care to do and would probably skip if they didn’t have to. But idk!
The push for women to be married earlier then later is due to babies. The older women get it’s just harder and can be a health risk to have children. But I could be wrong but that’s just my guess!
    Great topic! 💗💗

November 18th! Dayum guys im SHOCKED!!! So happy for you both, but totally just was not expecting this like ive kinda been thinking about it all day. I'm currently engaged & to be married in a month 😂 so it was great to know what your opinion is!! We're similar in some ways, for us its a spiritual choice to want to take that step together in our relationship, but we are keeping our elopement super small & intimate, i feel like thats the only way we could make the day (almost) no stress & actually about us as a couple!
Lots of love to you two 🥰

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS S**T!!!! guys, i knew that you guys are on podcast, and thought to myself, i'll check it out when I run out of content to consume on podcast platform (being honest) because I don't usually listen to a podcast where people talk and have a conversation on random topics in a casual manner. i'm not saying those kinds are bad, but i get that kind of content on TH-cam, and have kept podcast to be a place for education vs. entertainment. you guys changed that though!! just subscribed your podcast on Apple... i don't know, i will just say i loved this episode. it's funny that TH-cam finally surfaced a video from your Podcast channel after me following and consuming Alia's content for the longest time. and i'm sold immediately. i'm looking forward to binge-listening to your podcast. i'm going backwards from here -- just downloaded the 'over communicate' episode to listen to later tonight during my walk 🥰🥰🤩🤩

Guys, as a Brazilian my tip is: if you visit Brazil don’t only stick with Rio. Yep, Rio is insanely gorgeous, but northeast from Brazil is insane. Search: Carnaval in Recife, Brazil. Beaches in the north east from Brazil are the most beautiful thing ever.

I define marriage by the religion I live. (Islam)
I understand a lot of things you guys say but, again my religion teaches exactly the right reasons for marriage, the fact that you shouldn’t be involved with anybody before marriage is the complete opposite what you guys talked about.
The real relationship as a married couple starts as soon as you get married not before. Before you get to know the person for as long as you feel like you’d be ready to take the next step ( marriage).
It’s different when people live by their own rules, and define what marriage is for themselves
Islam just safes people from heartbreak and further damage, of course if you go about the way Islam teaches, everything else is not islamically valid.
I really think you guys are really interesting and love how you talk about a lot of topics I also can identify myself with.
I wish y’all a long healthy marriage full of love compassion and peace.

I love this. Thank you for sharing such a special moment with us. It's so nice knowing that my partner & I aren't alone when it comes to our "non-traditional" views on marriage & weddings. To share the same sentiments as both of you, no issues with others going the "traditional" route, but it's refreshing to hear people really emphasize what the meaning of a marriage means at its core. It's about you & your person. To mirror what most people have already said, it's great that you both did this in your own way! Endless blessings to both of you & your union 💕 💕

You have well noted that each country has its own traditions about marriage. It’s impossible to come to a common opinion about the wedding, proposal, rings, etc.. Society imposes this stereotype on us and if they do it wrong, it looks like (criminal side eye 👀you know)
I believe that the most important thing is understanding, mutual respect, loyalty, support for each other. All this is a factor of a strong family. A signed paper won't build a relationship.
Anyway , I also wish you guys happiness, you are the best! Always stay that way🫶🏼
P.S. Yoni, I also imagined as a child I wonder who my future husband is and where he is? What is he doing? 🤣🤣
