    Thank you so much for this. I could literally not find a circuit diagram anywhere. A new GTM60 cable costs R 1850 in South Africa. To put it in perspective, that is equivalent to 74% of the new 2020 legal monthly minimum wage of a domestic worker in SA. Your help will help many others who simply can't afford to purchase a new cable.
    It does seem to me that I might have to purchase a new one. Even feeding it 5.2V DC (2.0 Amp) from a Lenovo tablet charger via USB, it turned the Nuvi on, but it would indicate the charge-bolt sign inside the battery logo & couldn't access any traffic devices. Perhaps I damaged the GTM60 when I fed it 12V a year ago. Thank you anyway.

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are very welcome, and yes you are correct if the traffic receiver in the middle of the cable is subject to 12V it will get damaged. Don't worry you can find a defective one for a few dollars on eBay and use the circuit board from that one to fix this one. Good Luck

    Very thorough video, thank you Sir! OK the cable that is with my cigarette adapter doesn't have a third cable coming out of the receiver, I opened it according to your tutorial and checked. 2 wires going to the cigarette adapter and 6 wires going to the navi unit. There's though the jack opening for the aerial cable. So maybe I can cut it and lengthen? At least only lengthen the cable and keep the Garmin adapter too. It's going to occupy the cigarette adapter, and the other power outlet I have will be for the DVR and all power outlets the car has will be occupied . Thing that bothers me is, as you say these things are expensive, I can't sell it later to get the smart navigation unit with the BC-40 cam. Or, maybe, if it goes well, I can advertise the system as "stealth" installation, as no loose cables can be seen anywhere?

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes as long as there is no third cable going to the Cigarette lighter port it should be fine to cut it short. However remember that you still need the circuit board inside the Cigarette lighter adapter port because that is you step down voltage inverter. The input is 12-24VDC and the output is 5VDC. So you cannot feed 12V car battery power directly to the GPS, or Dash Cam.

    Great video. I have a cable to a Garmin Drivesmart 50 LMT. It has traffic but doesn't have the black box in the middle of the cable. Not sure how it does traffic. Mine has no power, with the LED not lighting. The fuse is good. Do you know if I would have similar circuitry as that in this video if I break into the unit? In other words, if the circuit board is bad on mine, do you know if I can use a board from cheaper Garmin ( without traffic). Perhaps the traffic-specific circuitry is also in the main housing on my cable?

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, If your Garmin Cable is TA10 with a yellow LED, or TA20 with a blue LED then it means your Garmin GPS has the traffic receiver inside of it. So the cable only serves as an Antenna for the internal traffic receiver. In that case you are correct any cheaper cables' circuit board should work for you as long as it is the same current 2A. Also for your information the traffic receiver is inside the black box in the middle of the cable, not on the cigarette lighter part.

      These are some common causes of fuse blowout.
      1. Short Out the output
      2. Let the Cable or GPS get wet
      3. Use the cable on a GPS other than what it is designed for
      4. Use the cable in a car with Bad Alternator
      5. Fried components inside the GPS

    After seeing this I realized that if the cigarette lighter part was not working, but the traffic receiver part was OK, then you could also just remove The cigarette lighter and replace it with a simple USB-A or USB-C cable at the 5v power lines and then have a functioning traffic receiver cable that plugs into a USB port in the car rather than the bulky cigarette adapter. Is that correct ? Of course the USB port in the car would need to be 2A, but many cars have that now.

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, yes you can but add a 100μF 16V electrolytic capacitor to the output so that it can handle the aggressive current fluctuation that the Garmin will subject the USB port to. This way the Garmin Screen will not flicker during usage.

    Hi, your video was very useful for me. I have a GTM25 and plugged it into my Garmin navigation, the navigation thinks it is just a power source and has no traffic information function. I took the power side apart and the structure is different than in your video, there are three wires, two white and one black. One black and one white should be the 5V output and the other white wire should be the antenna, but it's not soldered to any of the solder joints, is this normal?
    The traffic information receiving module near the plug side is also different from the one in the video, it's not plastic, it's rubber molded in one piece, how should I disassemble it. Thanks!

    Will GTM 36 work with Garmin DriveSmart 55 MT-S? In the internet I can find it's useless: "[...]The HD Digital Traffic reception in the DriveSmart 55MT or DriveSmart 65MT is built-in to the GPS unit itself. It does not require an accessory traffic cable. It only requires the TA20 vehicle power cable that comes with it. This means that you don't need to drape your power cable to enhance coverage from the HD radio stations nearby; the signal is received directly through the GPS.
    One can use a GTM36 or GTM60 cable with the DriveSmart 55 or 65, but there is no advantage.[...]"

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The difference between the standard ( Analog ) FM receivers and Digital HD receivers is not only the traffic information coverage, but the speed at which it refreshes. For example lets say there is an accident on the freeway the Digital Receivers will notify you much sooner than the Analog. The same goes when the accident clears. Also depending on where you live the HD Receivers can get more than traffic such as weather conditions road closures etc.

    Hello, my cable is broken close to the garmin navigator. You told it need to be garmin original cable, when replace the cable (so receiver works). But if i buy a cheaper power supply cable, and replace it (soldering new cable to the traffic receiver) I just wonder, does this new cable have 4 cables so the traffic receiver will work??? In most case, the cable is broken and a new gtm 35 cable cost too much for an old navigator.
    So please, where do I find a garmin cable with 4 cables to soldering to the receiver so the receiver works, or I can only repair so navigator get 5 volt power from the car?
