- Today we break out the Gehl 100 and hook it up to the 7405 John Deere! I will show you how we grind our dry corn feed mix. Later on I will show you how we let in cows. I hope you all enjoy the video, thank you for watching!

Great to watch you all. My fondest memories are of doing hay with my dad and brothers. My twin brother and I did most of the tractor work because we were the best at, at an early age . I ended up as a pilot, my dream as a child. But my brothers and I became the best of friends as we grew older. Enjoy every day!

Some of the best feed ever made, that ration, for cattle. Made many batches over the years back in the day, I'm 76 now and love the memories your family makes for me, so thank you for that! Love to see that some people can enjoy the love of farming without farming a county or two! Ron from Mn

That Gehl grinder/mixer still looks great to be over 30 years old its been well cared for
Loved hearing your brothers calling in the cows, it seems to be a lost art. I remember getting sent out to the pasture on grandpa's WI farm to call the cows in for milking. Keep up the videos they bring back so many great memories!
You just can’t beet eat corn for cattle feed. The smell of a newly opened ear corn crib can’t be duplicated. Such a wonderful merry. 👍👍👍😊😊😊

It was great to see a farmer use a hammer mill. I remember shoveling corn on cold Wisconsin winter days. Brrr
It might look like farming the old way but when it works for you guys i think it is great to see how efficient you work and It doesn't always need to be bigger and newer and better. I think your dad did a good job building this farm! What is really good to see is that you keep the stable clean and tidy. That means you love what you are doing and keep the livestock healthy and comfortable

As a boy I made trips to the feed mill with both my uncle and grandpa, also there was a portable feed mill that came to the farm on a truck. Again just the fact you do all these things shows how dedicated you are to the farm

When we had beef steers i ground thousands of bushels of ear corn with an Oliver 1800 LP and a gehl 120 mixer mill. made great feed at low cost. I had made up spouts out of sheet metal that I clamped to the wire cribs with vise grips. made it a lot easier line up the dragline. hardly any spilled out that way. I think its great that you can farm on a smaller scale and make it work. keep it up!

Sticking my head in the feed room door while the feed augers into the bin, I will always remember that smell. Also love the snow covered views of the hills and valleys in your neighborhood.
The snow sure makes everything look nice and clean!
Bought my Owatonna 85 mixer mill back in 1980 (its a 1960s model) with out a drop auger. Happy it never had one too ! Still have it and use it !!! Never realized the troubles a drop auger presents ! Always in the way.....and create many other problems too !
A simple incline auger solves the problems. Yes and extra motor........but just need to pull under it.......and ready to grind feed ! A little giant elevator works great too ! When finished....lay it on its side to theres no ice / snow it it. Life can be made easy !

I liked seeing you wrestle with the Saint Bernard. Many years ago when our children were growing up we had three Saint Bernards. They were great dogs for the family to have fun with but not so great around some livestock. Thanks for the great videos.

I watch a lot of different farming videos, a lot! But it occurs to me that farms that have animals never have a day off, especially dairy farms where cows need to be milked twice a day. Y’all are commendable. 👍
Brings back memories we used a 1600 Oliver diesel or a minnie U to grind. And lots of memories bringing cows in! Lol

I grew up on a dairy farm in Youngstown Ohio, when you brought the cows into the barn I had a flashback, your barn looks exactly like the one I milked in. Appreciate you taking the time to record it. You can take the boy out of the farm but you cant take the farm out of the boy! I've been trying to buy a farm for the last 6 years, soon enough!

Seen so many farmers with skid loaders. Yes....nice in tight areas......but otherwise..almost worthless. With a narrow ( four foot bucket ) you can do so much more work ! Dig tile lines....holes....etc. And with a tractor with chains.......feed cattle in 2 feet of snow out in the fields !
I spent an afternoon on a skid loader. If you want to destroy your back...Happy trails......you will get ur done ! Used a skid loader to remove hay bales from a field. Nearly broke my sternum for sure badly bruised !!! Just dangerous !
Tractor and loader.....with proper hydraulics......... amazing !! So much faster moving ! Issue is.......most have a poor cylinder arrangment....same is true with tractor loaders. Most are so primitive !
Primary......get rid of the snow bucket........invest in a narrow digging bucket !

I'm a new subscriber and echo the same sentiment of those who grew up on a small farm. We raised mostly beef and hogs but I helped out on the many dairy farms around us and I know no one works harder than a dairy farmer. I have a million questions but I'll try and watch your past videos, I'm sure that will answer alot.
Yep, grinding feed when it's 20 below is soooo much fun. We fed alot of hogs.Seemed like the colder it got the more feed we had to grind. Lots and lots of fun on the coldest day of the year.Stay warm!! Thanks 😊.

I just watched Emily's video from France and her dad mention how he enjoys your videos. I use to sell Big Gain Feed when the company first started out of Mankato Minnesota. Was good friends of the ones that started the company. Mark and Elton. It is amazing how the hybrids of today slide through crib wires that never did 50 years ago when the ears were so much bigger. I remember when we use to have to shovel corn into our grinder mixer! Before that we ran a corn grinder off the belt pulley on our Farmall Super M!

Every Saturday morning 2 batches of fat hog feed, 2 batches of ground ear corn 1 for fat cattle and 1 for milk cows. If I had a nickel for every scoop shovel I pitched into a artsway grinder mixer. It was a good way to grow up in the 60’s.

For Hot detergent pipeline wash, often shorter is better. If wash solution temp drops below 120 degrees F (49 C) the milk fat starts coming out of the solution resulting in a cleaning failure. End temp trumps circulation time. I found your channel because Farming at LaForge gave you a shout out. I am just starting your vid’s and they are great.

The first video of yours I saw was you grinding feed. Like I probably said then, my most favorite job during the winter. I love grinding feed. When I need to shovel a lot I liked using that Oliver 88. It was all the tractor I needed to stay warm shoveling. I use a Gehl 100 too, just like that one.

@@GierokFarms actually doesn't look that much different than yours really. I like it that your mangers look tiled. I would think it would make them easier to sweep.
Up to say the nineteen sixties most milkers in England were tied up but with the advent of silage farmers moved to lose housing and with it came the slurry and the storing, feeding hay meant dry manure and clean cows, farmers are just starting to turn cattle out as the weather eases and most back ends are covered in manure, grateful for those times on the family farm.

We used an M on our mixer. It was souped up a bit registered 61HP after we overhauled it. Used it on a blower for corn silage on a 70' silo no problem blowing it up, Haylage was a bit slower.

WOW , what a terrific farm video !! Thank you for sharing ! Brings back memories of growing up on dad's farm . He operated a Gehl mix-mill ( don't recall the model number ) back in the 60's . Traded it off for a New Holland model 357 in the early 70's. Seem to recall the New Holland required more horse power to grind grain than the Gehl , did it grind more grain per minute ? not sure on that point.

I am a beef farmer in NE Iowa but use all Big Gain supplements and minerals also. Also run a single axle 14' Knight Slinger also. Mine is 18 years old and needed a little welding last weekend.

I grind feed by myself and its hard to get lined up on corn cribs. I've made the change to filling gravity wagons with corn from crib and filling grinder from wagon. Much easier for me. Give it a try.

That grinder sure made fast work of grinding up the whole corn cobs. Have to ask what is the story behind the wood carved sign labeled "Sweetheart Saloon"? Enjoyed the first 6 videos in the series. I think what would be easier on you guys for your corn cribs is installing a convayor system and just pull the thing covering the conveyor belt and that way your not spilling as much cob corn on the ground that's what I would do but I do like your guys videos

They are okay, not the top producers! Helps improve herd health mixing up the genetics a little bit!
I always thought that a roller-mill was a healthier process for grinding feed, than using a hammermill

I keep 2 cobs of corn on my TV Stand. Started out as fall decor. Kept as a tribute to the corn farmers around here. I hate using the name MickeyMouse. It's my sisters old phone and I can't get it off.
My cousin had a cow that was a greedy little piggy. She would go to her neighbors spot and start eating her food. You had to chase over to her spot all the time.
We have a few of those!
I'm sure you have fine bacteria counts, but I am surprised that the milk inspector hasn't insisted on some type of air injection in your wash cycle. They want surges of solution to clean that system well. Also do you watch the temperature of the wash solution so that it doesn't start redepositing milk fat on the line?What will you replace your Gehl grinder with as there is no more Gehl. Fewer manufacturers are producing grinder mixers every year.
Are bacteria count is good, yeah they are always updating the rules and regulations! I heard New Holland makes a really nice one!
@@GierokFarms I didn’t think New Holland made grinders any more. Could be wrong. Arts Way is the only one I know of these days.
Just a thought. Backing up the grinder to the bin looks like a pain. Couldn’t you put a piece of hard rubber on the end of the auger
