      The people saying "German is not easy" are probably those who haven't had latin at school, so they think that the German language is the hardest one, which though is simply wrong, because there are languages like finish or hungarian that are indeed more complicated than the easy German language in my opinion. So, you should learn the language you really love/like to learn. Then, of course every language is easy!

    Silas, Mein Name ist Adrian. Ich wohne in Amerika mit meiner Familie. Ich lerne Deutsch seit 7 Monaten in der Schule und zuhause. Ich habe die 4 Fälle gelernt. Am Anfang war es sehr schwer, aber es wird einfacher und einfacher und macht viel Sinn. Es ist die Eltern weil alle Pluralformen die sind. So meine, deine. Viel Glück mit deinem Deutsch lernen von Amerika. 😊😊🍀

    • @perpersson5928
      @perpersson5928 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Wenn ich korrigieren darf: Hier hat das nichts mit der Pluralform zu tun.
      Es heißt hier "meine Eltern" weil es Nominativ ist. Wenn man es als Frage formuliert kann man sagen "Wer mag Bier?", Antwort: "Meine Eltern mögen Bier".
      "Meinen Eltern" ist Dativ und kann benutzt werden in Sätzen wie "Meinen Eltern gehört das Haus" oder, als Frage, "Wem gehört das Haus?"
      Zur Vollständigkeit: Genitivform ist "meiner Eltern" und Akkusativ "meinen Eltern".
      Ist wirklich schwer zu lernen und ich wüsste nicht ob/wie ich das schaffen würde wenn es nicht meine Mutterspräche wäre, also Respekt dafür, dass du nach nur 7 Monaten schon fehlerfrei deutsch schreiben kannst. Immer weiter so :D

    _"Every noun has a gender, and there is no sense or system in distribution; so the gender of each must be learned separately and by heart. There is no other way. To do this one has to have a memory like a memorandum-book. In German, a young lady has no sex, while a turnip has. Think what overwrought reverence that shows for the turnip, and what callous disrespect for the girl."_ Mark Twain

      there are some rules, if you take a verb and transform it to a noun by adding the sufix -ung it is always feminin
      also i think all nouns ending with -keit are feminin and there are probably other rules aswell
      but yeah, for the most part, it is random xD

      Ten quotes about German. Take your pick:
      1. When one is polite in German, one lies. Goethe.
      2. It describes things that have no name in English.
      3. A young lady has no sex, but a turnip does.
      4. German is only romantic if you have a past in it.
      5. German is the language of poetry: angry, angry poetry.
      6. Life is too short to learn German.
      7. Learning German is what eternity is made for.
      8. If I want to threaten someone or to speak harshly to them, I speak in German, for their entire language is threatening, rough and vehement. Emperor Charles V
      9. Germans think that they're profound because their language is unclear; they lack the clarity of the French language, and it never conveys what it should, which means that no German knows what he actually wanted to say. My comment: if this were true, German would be used more often in diplomacy.
      10. It might be hard, but it’s still more logical than English.

    Der, Die and Das is in the end not that important. We do understand you without the correct article. Just keep in mind that "Der" is the male form, "Die" is the female form and "Das" is the genderneutral form. Thats the theorety but there are nearly more irregular forms like "Der Tisch" than regular forms. But for the beginning you can go wih just keeping those three in mind. If you say for example "das Tisch" its very reasonable and nobody would judge you because a table is obviously gender neutral, just not for us Germans. :D But whatever its not that important after tall.

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Words which end on "chen" are always genderneutral. This is one of the few rules you can trust absolutely. Anyway, I agree with Flonke. The one tip I always give people who try to learn German is not to worry too much about the article. No German will be angry with you if you get it wrong, and they will still understand you. The only way to learn them is just listen to German until they become second nature to you anyway.

      Articles in German are absolutely important. The rule is to learn new vocabulary like nouns in German WITH THE corresponding ARTICLE. Sorry no shortcuts there. Thats the only way to do it. Otherwise he will not be able to form grammatically correct sentences when the articles are shifted in cases of Nominativ, Genitiv, Dativ, Akkusativ... Without the correct articles he will never make any progress to a more advanced level and sound forever like a cave man in German.

    Best Way to learn the "der die das" words is to just try to speak German, and then being corrected immediately by someone who knows German. Important is that you are being corrected all the time. i know it can be kinda annoying, but it helps alot.
    I can hear that you make many mistakes like in 6:30 "die Grillmeister" and noone corrects you. (its DER Grillmeister, cause he is a male. DIE Grillmeisterin, for female btw)

    • @MagiconIce
      @MagiconIce 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But don't forget, that this is no formal rule.
      An example: The Table => Der Tisch.
      But the table is no living thing and has no gender by nature, it's just male in the german grammatic.
      So you can't deduce the correct german article from the natural gender of an object in every case.
      What others have written before about learning the article together with the noun seems to be the best way, atleast for me as an mothertongue german speaker.
      We don't learn systematical, grammatical rules for our own language, we have the luck to just grow up with it.

    Artikel(der die das) are important, because sometimes they change the meaning. But once you've rememberd all the articles the really hard thing is to get the cases right.(It's getting worse xD)
    Fun fact: Articles change depending on time.
    During the day: der Weizen, das Korn
    At evening/night: das Weizen, der Korn
    If you're alcoholic you always use the night-form.

  • @crappiefisher1331
    @crappiefisher1331 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    i know you said you don't want to focus too hard on "der, die, das" at the moment, but i would highly recommend to simply learn the noun together with the article
    so instead of learning "tree" = "Baum" learn "the tree" = "der Baum" and so forth.. it's a tip most people give foreigners when learning german.. it for sure will not solve your problems with "mein, meine, dein, deine" and so on, but it will still be easier in the long run, if you simply learn noun+article

    • @mojojim6458
      @mojojim6458 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But when der Baum turns into dem Baum or den Baum depending on how it's used in a sentence....that's what makes English speakers shake their heads.

      4 cases and so 4 forms for each kind of article, it is logical and easy:
      Nominativ - Genitiv - Dativ - Akkusativ
      Ein - eines - einem - einen
      Eine - einer - einer - eine
      Der - des - dem - den
      Die - der - der - die
      Das - des - dem - das
      That's it ;-)
      (for "my" or "your" just add an m or a d at the beginning of the word: mein - meines - meinem - meinen; meine - meiner - meiner - meine; dein - deines - ... and so on)

  • @Freaky0Nina
    @Freaky0Nina 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I made the mistake of not taking the determiners serious enough when I started learning french. Believe me, you WILL regret this later. As excruiciating as it is now, keep up and make sure to always include the correct determiner. Of course, it also depends on what your proficiency goal is. If you're not planning on staying forever and no tests are taken (I will admit, I regretted it for the most part because it showed on my french grades later on in school) you can go on concentrating on the words themselves rather than the determiners. It might just happen, that people get confused about what you mean once you're at a level where you can maker longer sentences that include conjunctions.

      @mojojim6458 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey sillas, i am german and i love learning languages and i am currently learning swedish. Last week i was in sweden for a week with my dad who is also learning swedish. And we dont learn grammar at all we just try to speak and sometimes the grammar is right and sometimes its wrong. But its not important to learn grammar to learn how to speak a language. Cuz you learned english as a kid and no one told you about grammar. You just heard what people say and you made mistake but since they talked without mistakes you could pick up thing that you made wrong and knew how to say them right. And in sweden i just talked and when i would make a mistake they would say like „hey that wrong“ maybe they would repeat the sentence in another way without the mistake. So when i would say „i want do eat meat“ i made a mistake with do and to they would say „oh i also want to eat meat“ so they said it right and i could here that they said it differently so i picked it up.
    What i wanna say is that you dont have to look super strict on grammar, as long as you understand the sentence and you can say it (no matter if with or without mistakes) you can talk to people. And this will always make you learn more. When you just focus on grammar you get frustrated and dont wanna learn anymore cuz you think you cant talk in that language even tho natives would totally understand you.
    So i like how you dont really care about the articles in front of the nouns cuz this will come to you when you talk.

    • @MiciFee97
      @MiciFee97 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi, Silas! I am an American who speaks German. I have been learning for about two years, but now I can finally say that I understand and communicate just about everything in German, motivating me to also learn other languages.
    I have been watching your videos for a while now. In ways, it reminds me of my long road to learn German. I would just like to give you a few things which I would have wanted to know in the beginning. My goal is not to come across as arrogant or critical, but rather direct in a helpful way.
    Firstly, I would like to commend your efforts for speaking German -- not worrying about any mistakes. That is quite admirable. However, you have said "the only way to learn is through speaking." I understand your reasoning behind this: you need to communicate in your surroundings. While important, you are looking at the situation from the wrong viewpoint. You cannot practice what you do not know. In other words, you cannot really speak as your goals suggest if you cannot understand.
    Further, you mentioned that you still cannot understand spoken German much. I was in the same place. Just as you put in time to practice football, you must devote time. Listening cannot be avoided. Your learning will come from listening and reading, not by grammar exercises, vocabulary flashcards or even speaking German at restaurants.
    Listening comprehensible input is the key. You must have input (reading or listening) for your desired *output*. The news will not help you right now because you have not had enough input yet. This is a gradual process. You must work your way to understanding.
    Remember immersion does not mean just living in a country. It means gradually surrounding yourself in situations where you understand part, but striving towards the whole.
    I have used tons of free content to learn German from zero to an advanced fluency. I'd be happy to give you some website links. Also, I'd love to talk to you sometime about my experience learning German. (I love helping people find success and joy in languages). Don't give up!
    God bless you and Kaitlyn!
    P.S. The declensions of adjectives (die, der, das and mein, meine, meines, etc.) should fall into place rather easily when you are exposed to enough comprehensible input.

    Sometimes you say Gute Nacht and pronounce it like Gute Nackt. Nacht is the night (like you already know) but Nackt means actually naked. Everyone understands what you want to say and your german has improved very well, but you could try focussing a bit more on the ch sounds. So I would say in the this case you would try to do the sound you make when you gather the spit before you spit it out. I guess you already know what sound I'm talking about.

But it also doesn't really matter anyway.
    Meinen, einen, etc are posessive pronouns. You'll get there in time, it's not that hard, really :)

    As someone whose first language is English, I totally sympathise with Silas on this one. Firstly, why does every noun have to have a sex? For example - der Teppich! What is masculine about a carpet? Die Kreide - what is feminine about a piece of chalk? And then the definite and indefinite articles change according to the function of the word in the sentence e.g. die Frau can become der Frau e.g. ich ging mit der Frau. Then there's all the adjectival endings! AAAARGH! Don't get me wrong, I love German but OMG the grammar is hard work! Germans just seem to magically know it all! :)
    I don't blame Silas for focusing, at least for now, on being understood when he speaks German, and not worrying if he gets the grammar wrong, because that's exactly what I do! :)

    I think some knowledge about grammatical terms may help you with some parts of German. Obviously, our article system is almost completely random and there is no trick other than learning all of them by heart, but when it comes to "mein, meine, meines, meinen, meinem", which are possesive pronouns, there really is a system to it, which is connected to our cases. So you can really look at declination tables and these things will start to make sense.

    hey silas some advice from a professional german chef if you like the cheap pork cuts in germany that much you really should try the good stuff from a butcher sometime in the future those packed up pork steaks are usually of a lower quality and the animals didnt get good food and were mostly just born and fed as fast as possible so they never could develop good flavor thats why they are marinated that much to make up for that missing flavor

    I actually don't find this aspect of German that hard, because I know I am definitely gonna make mistakes anyways.
    For gender I guess there are no shortcuts unfortunately. One strategy I use is using association. For example "der Mann läuft nackt in den Wald", because I know the man is masculine and I use that to associate with forest (I've heard the more explicit or personal the image you create the better the association for the memory), plus their plural matches. If I feel lazy I just tend to highlight the vocabulary blue for masculine nouns. I find your sticker labeling method pretty neat, so I can use different colored stickers for different genders.
    For cases, all I did was that I need to memorize the 4x4 adjective table (actually only 3x4) because I actually don't care too much about the genitive case. Then, whenever I am stuck I don't really need to look up tables again and again which can be so annoying. You can use a song call "das doofe Fischlied" to help you memorize the case ending which shouldn't be very challenging.
    And you are right, you shouldn't focus too much just on nouns, there are so many other annoying aspects about German like reverse verbs, such as "uns fällt was ein", and German numbers and German Pronouns which I find it extremely annoying.
