    I'm a beginner violinist playing about a year after a very long layoff. I've tried 3 different shoulder rests and could never get comfortable. I was constantly fighting with it. A couple of weeks ago I saw some videos about playing without one and decided to try it. It is much more comfortable for me and playing is a lot more fun without having problems with step one: just hold it correctly. I also discovered a noticeable increase in volume and fullness of sound. I haven't noticed any added problems practicing at this stage of my ability. I hope I can continue as I (hopefully) improve. I use a small cloth pad where the bottom edge of the violin rests on my collar bone to avoid pain.

    Hi Joy... this is one of those topics that people seem to be excessively passionate about, and even though I’m a relative novice, I’ve dabbled with no shoulder rest versus shoulder rest with bunches of trials of different adjustments, and I find that the right shoulder rest, adjusted in a way that makes it easy for me to do everything, and still gives me the requisite leeway of motion, is much more comfortable than not using a shoulder rest, and having that certain part of the left hand sliding back and forth to hold the neck up. They are both doable, but I find it more comfortable to my collar bone to use a shoulder rest! In summary, to each his own, I say!😎😉😘👨🏻 Love your channel!

    An exercise that I do to find the ideal height and shape of the shoulder rest is to play with a sponge! It also has helped me recently to relax my left shoulder, for when I play with my shoulder rest. I think it is a pretty good exercise :)

    I use a magic pad I think it's called which has an adhesive on bottom about the size of a nickel that stays sticky and comes on and off freely. The problem with shoulder rests was arm movements would disturb and exaggerate changes to the violin position because it would follow my shoulder. Funny thing is, I have a really long neck and needed super long shoulder rest legs, but with the pad, even though it sits way lower, I don't need the height at all. I was never truly comfortable until I found the adhesive pad. It's also small and can't be seen from the front. So it looks like I'm not using anything!

    Hi Joy! First of all thank you for your videos, they are a great help!
    I'm learning the violin and I tried first without the shoulder rest, however, I had a hard time with my left hand because I squeezed too much and was holding the violin with it.
    I spent some time finding a good position for the shoulder rest but after I found the sweet spot I felt a big difference, I feel a lot more comfortable now that I don't have to hold the violin with my left hand and I think I'm making more progress with it =)

      In the long run they'll develop tendrill problems and neck pains. I know the idea of "top / majestic musicians" is appealing. They say a lot of things and we go for them because well, they must know better but it isn't the best option. Go for comfort and think of all the hours you'll be forcing your body to provide support and how convinient it is for us just to use a Sr. Cheers!

      It is possible that perhaps you did not clean your violin (strings and all included) and loosen your bow after each play? If not then maybe that's the explanation :)

      Dear Edinburgh, I am sorry to hear that. Some old violins with worn out varnish collects rosin easier and harder to clean. And old strings also can be hard to clean it properly. I hope your newly varnished violin and new strings would be able to be cleaned better even with the accessice rosin.
      Also you might want to consider getting a new rosin, as sometimes old rosins don't work as well as it should. Happy music making!

  • @wolfthunder2526

    I have to use shoulder rest, cuz the gap between shoulder and chin is too long, I'll end up into very awkward posture, squeezing viola too hard with neck and shoulder. It brings pains and aches to my neck.
    I hope i can gain weight soon 😹 so the need of shoulder rest is decreasing over time.

  • @dougnickerson

    I love you Joy :-) I have a KON shoulder rest, which I dont use that much. When i played with the symphony , I used to use a sponge? Without the shoulder rest, currently , I find that my head is leaning to to left , this leads to a pain in a certain spot on the left side of my neck. So, today, i was playing on the street downtown, and I switch to the shoulder rest. However! This causes the violin the to angle down to the right, such that I must change the angle of my bow or I hit the string below. The E string is the most problem . I may switch back to the sponge . Do all shoulder rests cause this problem? This a good topic for a video thank you :-) what's up with you and various violinist using cloth, does it provide support ?

    • @MrRepublicking
      @MrRepublicking 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thrupthi R p Violin is always need tuning everyday. But having good set of strings such as some expensive one's like dominant. I use those, which tend to keep it mostly in tune. Note cheaper strings especially in full packs of each. Tend to snap faster, don't sound great and be easy to slip out of tune. Invest in some different brands, as they can make your violin sound better or worst. I generally have strings G, D, A from same brand and E on another, as it sound great on one of my 19th century violin. Keep the instrument away from heat and extream cold, it can have an impact on the tuning pegs, this letting the slip way out of tune.

      Violin has to be tuned every time and every day as it's normal to go a bit out of tune. While it's true that some violins go out of tune more than others, but it would be a good idea for you to know how to tune the violin. Here are videos I made in that regard. th-cam.com/video/7_yrvphz37E/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/6RZUuB5Jh_w/w-d-xo.html
