    That's exactly what I need for improvement my evolution on violin. When looking my videos playing see my arm very lock and tensions. The bow and vibrato become more natural and easy. Cold make another video about how adjust and position of espaleira (these thing under violin, don't know the correct nome in english).

    Very thorough and helpful Joy. Sometimes the body part we are "blaming" is the innocent by-stander. I have a tendency to lean forward and pull the violin downward- my set up is OK, but my shoulder is trying to make the correction for my poor posture. Similarly, I came to find my tight thumb at the neck was caused by my fingers pressing too hard on the fingerboard (and my thumb was just pushing back to counteract that pressure). When I relaxed the pressure on my fingertips, my thumb was able to relax as well Thanks for addressing this from different cause and effect viewpoints.

    Thank you Joy! I injured my neck years ago and have always struggled with numbness in my hand and fingers. There should be more videos on correct posture on how to hold your violin. Dropping my shoulders is a great suggestion especially when I feel like I'm crushing my violin with my neck and shoulder. Great tips!

    This was helpful as it gave me a bit more perspective of potential problems when playing, but I finally realized my chin rest was the problem! See, I have a shorter neck and my chin rest digs into it a bit. I noticed that when I played I was using my neck to clamp down on it a bit, and it just didn't feel stable or comfortable. So I told my parents that I need a new one. Hopefully we can find one soon.

    Thanks for your insights Joy.
    What's your argument to those who insist on not using a shoulder rest? They claim that way their violin resonates freer with bigger sound. In theory that may be true, but I feel comfort is priority. Agree?
    If I follow my ideal philosophy of simplicity and simplify by ditching the shoulder, then I'll be fussing with experimenting with the right chinrest or some pad......Which actually defeats the purpose of simplicity.

    I just found this video, but it’s so weird because the night after this vid was released, I sustained a very painful injury from tending my shoulder too much! 10 days of not playing violin or moving, taking meds & muscle relaxers, and I feel much better. I wasn’t even aware that I was tending my shoulder at all!

    Hi Ms. Lee
    Enjoying your videos. I'm an old beginner and trying to get to intermediate level. Not many affordable teachers in my area. so you Tube is my affordable answer.
    My question is = do you have play along videos ? and do you have a way for viewers to print the music and play with you?
    If not, are there any sites or channels you would recommend to do this.
    Thanks and keep up the great work.

    Hello Joy Lee! I love your channel and you have helped me sooo much as I am teaching myself violin (nobody in my town teaches). I have a serious problem with tension in my bow hand, elbow and bowing should (all on the bowing side). I cannot remove the tension when doing off string bowing- I tense up a ridiculous amount, because when off string bowing, I tend to have so much tension that it doesn't work and is uncomfortable. OR I relax my fingers of my bow so much, that the bow is just out of control. How do I get the right amount of control without tension or completely losing control of the bow all together? Thank you for any advice you have, I admire your teaching ability and your playing skill. Very patient and talented woman ^_^
    Thank you :-)

    Another option is to get a higher chin rest. I’ve noticed that people who don’t use a shoulder rest tend to go that route.

    I'm a adult beginner and this is my biggest problem right now. I can't practise more than 30 minutes at once cause then I get immense neck and shoulder pain :/ I will try to focus on relaxing my shoulder and ask my teacher to keep an eye out if I tense up.

    Hi Joy thanks for this priceless tips , do you think for a male violinist of student with thick beard can be a factor for violin control ?

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had violin students with thick beard and we were able to make it work well. You might have to try different ways, but as long as you focus on relaxed muscle feeling, you should be able to find a solution. Happy violin practising Ayman!

    Joy can u please discus about futures in music how to became a virtuoso

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ashkar, becoming a virtuoso or anything meaningful has to do in my opinion building a correct habit which can continue for a very long time. If you can work on violin playing everyday no matter how hard it is, day in and day out, you will witness things become easier and nicer to enjoy. But first one step at a time, perseverance is the key Ashkar. Happy violin practising!

    I hurt my shoulder playing with higher positions. I'm 5 inch with short arms and fingers, wonder if it was due to moving my shoulder too close in to compensate for my lack of lengths on all fronts :(
