The Hornet looks like it could be a good first "big bike". Being of a similar size to you I'm concerned I wouldn't be comfortable on something as heavy as 190kg. Big fan of the Roadcraft approach rather than the trousers-on-fire style of riding so appreciate your technique. Thanks for the video.

Great and honest review of the Hornet. I think Honda are on winner with this bike especially as it's a grand cheaper than the more or less equivalent Suzuki that is coming out as well. 👍🏍🏁

Stay with me on this Russ it's tongue in cheek.. 1973 not once on my fizzy did I even expect or get a jerky throttle.. 1974 Rd 200 same, 1975 rd400 same, 1977 suzuki gt750 same etc etcetera.. 50 yrs on yes 50, we (me included) are impressed by a throttle that's not jerky, 🤔 haha. Very enjoyable review Russ.

Really pleased you have done this review because you demonstrated the quickshifter. I passed my test thru a Honda school up here in Newcastle and have placed my order for one of these in the pearl white and got, like you said, the £500 off. A quickshifter is a bit of a mystery to me because I have never used one before. Still waiting for my delivery date but I am a 50 odd year old kid at christmas waiting for mine to turn up. Picked mine up today and really really impressed with it. I am 5' 10 with a 30" inside leg and can just about flat foot it. Riding it is just an enormous laugh, makes you grin from ear to ear. Looks so much better in the flesh so photos and videos do not do this bike justice. The exhaust tone is brilliant as well, stock exhaust that is. Like every person who has reviewed this bike I totally agree that the handling is great. The 600 mile service is £150 and annual service is £200 from Honda. Anyone looking for a change I would definitely point them in the Hornet's direction.

Reminds me of when the MT07 was released super cheap maybe 5k at the time, it's a good bike for the money I think a 90 odd HP twin is more than enough for road duty really. I find my 250 mostly okay for almost all scenarios.....
I really enjoyed watching this review, I am definitely considering buying this bike as my next bike. Can you review the Honda CB650R and the Honda CB1000R please?

Aah yes, never thought about a restricted test ride. I think it's just an ecu plug in so shouldn't be any hassle. Let me know how you get on.
@@RoadcraftNottingham Test rode it earlier today, was good fun. Lovely bike. Hoping for decent insurance quotes so I can justify getting one! It was the first time they had restricted one and they hadn't re activated the quickshifter. I've been invited back to try it with it enabled at a later date.

I know when I saw this bike it really stood out to me. Could certainly be a worthy contender for my '07 Bandit replacement, as I know that I wouldn't touch the Suzuki S8 with a bargepole!
Hondas definitely make good bikes for the money though, the 600 Hornet I passed my test on was an absolute dream to ride (even if I was an absolute nightmare to teach to ride!)
Go test ride one mate, I’m never having an in-line 4 again! The engine in this hornet is so much better! What a bike!

@@johnflavin1602 in short, the front end of it. When I saw it at last year's bike show I was hoping it would look nicer in the flesh, but I actually disliked it even more. It is a shame as I've had a few Suzukis, both bikes and cars, but I just can't see me ever getting an S8
Great review Russ! More please! Looks a lovely bike and looked very smooth on camera. I’m not a massive fun of small dash pods but I do like digital , awkward customer or what! Anyway, nice noise and the quick shifter seemed great. Does a quick shift add any stress on the gearbox?? I’m loving how modern bikes have “modes” especially rain mode etc , I wonder if they’ll ever tie this into tyre temps, would be cool to have a “tyre warming” mode , even if it just lowered the fuel map to keep the torque/power down till optimum grip levels?? Be really interested to see a video about tech on bikes such as electronic suspension etx! Have a great weekend guys! Past my best onto everyone at roadcraft!
The quick shifter momentarily cuts the engine so I wouldn't imagine any damage. I'm sure tech may take temperatures into consideration one day.

There's a reason why this bike is 7k. It's lots of fun for very little outlay.
Pushing buttons and twirling thumb-wheels obviously makes you feel special. In that case, you need to go to your nearest BMW dealership. They'll have bikes fitted with all the tech and toys you could possibly want. 👍
I'm defo planning a test ride as I'm in the market for a new bike. It ticks a lot of boxes for me, although I fear that my large frame might be a bit too big for this bike. 🥺

What an absolute bargain for what you getting. Yellow or grey for me- with the yellow wheel trim/decals... Looks fresh.

I can't think of a reason why I'd want to change modes on the go. I think I'd just select the full power mode and leave it there. That's what I do on my Kawasaki Z1000SX anyway...
And on my Himalayan... there are no modes! 😂👍

I went to buy one trading in my mt09. As an all year rider (no car license) I was somewhat bothered about lack of rear hugger.
The gray would of been my choice of the colours….Honda dealer was lucky enough to have all 4 bikes in the showroom.
As a das bike im sure it would be brilliant.
In the end I opted for the cb1000 👌
Maybe huggers will be available soon. Wish they'd make one for my Zero, I've a muddy ass 😂
That's the only criticism I had of this bike, the lack of hugger. The reg rect and brake reservoir/shock get real filthy on this thing quick. But I'm sure Pyramid plastics or Honda themselves will come up with something.

Time will tell what the quality is like and if the frames rust like several Africa twins I've seen. I'm sure it'll be popular though as it is very well priced. 😊
Deffo, unfortunately the UK weather will kill anything that isn't cleaned regularly. As you say, time will tell.
I would imagine they will revise it in 2-3 years with some updates too. Just like they do with all the bikes
Informative - thanks. Would've liked to know more about the suspension (rather than the quick shifter). How plush, and degree of adjustability (am assuming those forks have none, other than different oil weights and changed springs). Rear shock is just preload?

My enfield 350classic has lovely fuelling at low speed and taking up from closed throttle. Had Africa twin and that was pretty snatchy. Major bug bear for me. Although africa t had fairly loose chain tension according to honda spec which prob didn't help.
I half fancy the cb500f because of the MPG and enough power for the road, but that price and power is extremely tempting, I think that this bike will sell incredible well. The 8s might be the bike to have if you don't want to be one of the masses on the Hornet.
PS my friend has had 5 Aprilia RSV's
I have a CB500F and have no complaints. Fuel consumption is very economical; handling on smaller roads and bends is fun and exciting, and she holds here own on the motorway too, cruising at a steady 70mph with still enough revs left for overtaking. I don't know will I ever get another bike as much as I like looking at them and thinking about them. The two models look very similar, so it comes down to that extra bit of power, I suppose.
The cb500f is an excellent bike. ☺

I do have a question if you don’t mind:
What exactly do the other quick shift modes change from medium? Is it how much force is needed to move between gears? Is it the rev range for up/down?
Yes it's the amount of foot force needed to allow the mechanism to cut the engine for the gear change. My Aprilia was factory set too light for my liking as I like to put a little pressure on the gear lever before changing. This Honda not only has three pressure levels but can also be totally switched off. Great design.

By the way, let’s say it’s turned on, but I still use the clutch, does it behave differently from when it’s turned off?
I did the test drive last week with it enabled and noticed something weird using the clutch, but I couldn’t tell if that was it
I know you're all wrapped up in your cold weather layers but what did you think of the wind at motorway speed. I've just sold my cbr600f and looking for a commuter that would do 2 hours a day on motorways. I had a xsr700 for a few weeks and felt like I was going to slide off the back of it so I'm concerned about another naked bike
If I had to do those speeds for a while I'd look into a Givi type screen personally but didn't feel any uncomfortable buffeting.
How does the Honda Approved School discount work? You mentioned after a couple of lessons you would qualify for a £500 discount

A Japanese 750cc bike for just seven grand is astonishing.
In 1979 jobs in Tescos etc were paying £1 an hour and a 250 superdream was £800.
Now that's £10 an hour so today's 750 is actually CHEAPER.
Well, 6500 £ sounds great - I looked at the Finnish price and it is outrageous 11 890Eur! 10500 £...
Surely that can't be right. It's normally the UK who suffers price-wise.

@@RoadcraftNottingham Yeh, I think they occupy different segments of the naked market. They've not said it directly, but Honda seems to have positioned this bike as the MT-07 killer.
What I enjoyed about the 07 while I was training for my unrestricted is just how uncomplicated it felt. I'm still quite partial to that level of "pure" riding (and how direct a cable throttle feels!), I feel like going more electronic loses a bit of that spark. So maybe it won't eat *all* of Yamaha's lunch :P
They need a sports (fairings) variant to compete with R7.
I've had a quick search for best selling bikes of 2022 and from the few sites I looked at, not one was a sports bike. Mainly nakeds scooters, commuters and the BMW GS. Maybe it's not that important to Honda..?

Ordered mine blind. $12550AUD (£6906). The base MT-07 here is $14490. Was a no brainer.
You'll love it. Only real point is harsher suspension than the CB650r but similar to the mt07. Let me know how you get on.

@@RoadcraftNottingham picked up my bike this morn and have been out and done my first 160km on it! Not much more I could ask for really! Hit the nail on the head. My only two gripes were that the rear brake pedal was set way too high (already fixed that) and the seat, my goodness it's hard and hurts the ol' bone cushions. Give me a soft plush seat and it would be perfect for me. It's a little rocket that handles like a bicycle!

Not a fan of the looks but you can't see the bad part from the saddle anyway. The price seems almost too good.
How much bigger it feels from mt07 or 500x
Similar size to the mt07. Not ridden the 500x but with a 795mm seat height it feels controllable.

The main one is after a while I get pins and needles in my right hand but also price and rider modes and the way that twin engine fires.. Addictive. Although the suspension is better on the 650

if only it looked as good as the CB650R. as it is now, it looks dated already, it has a design that was never really popular at any time, shame it carries a 160 instead of a 180 rear wheel to. Other than the looks, it's a great bike for sure.
Looks are certainly subjective and the 160 tyre makes the handling sharp. Bikes this size don't really need a tyre that wide but I'll agree it certainly looks better.
Like the principle of the bike, but it's a waste. Honda has already been fielding a psrrelel twin 750, admittedly doesn't make as much power but they could've fixed that. Similar style/look, similar in that it seems to not be made for fast riding, so what's the point?
If they had made it a V twin it would've at least had that going for it in the flavour department, parallel twins are a dime a dozen atm. I doubt this will upset the dominance of the Mt-07

@@Aspire198 aah, Leanna has an NC750, totally different bike in all aspects.. That's more a commuter. I don't think there's any comparison there although it's also a good bike.
I’ve never liked these middleweight twins, just seem to end up bumping them off the limiter waiting for something to happen. I guess my preference is for a more top end biased spread of power so you can really get the feel of working the bike hard. Also I think your mistaking torque for flexibility and / or low gearing.I bet it doesn’t make much more than 70bhp at the wheel.
The twins certainly do have a different character to the 4s which are certainly revvier. I've always said "torque" when referring to low down grunt, just a habit. ☺

No matter how Honda likes to make it look otherwise, the real competitor is the MT-09 which is only slightly more expensive, but you get a far superior bike. The MT-07 is much cheaper than the CB750. Personally I find the design of the new bike bland and the swingarm looks extremely cheap for a 2023 model. I'd like to see a V4 naked from Honda with the pre-2014 firing order for that glorious growl or a 450 street legal Supermoto.
The mt07 is £500 more than the Hornet in the UK and the MT09 is £9800 compared with the Hornet at £7000, official prices. And the mt07 doesn't have the rider modes or tc or wheelie control the Hornet does. The mt07 only has 72ish bhp compared to the Honda at 91bhp
I find multi cylinder bikes a little bit characterless against these things
I agree, maybe because this has a story for me I feel a little different about this one. Still prefer my V engines.
Unfortunately, motorcycle manufacturers compete with each other in terms of performance, to the detriment of comfort, the image and preferences of motorcyclists. They all switched to the cheapest option, namely the parallel twins! They were even able to make the V Srom parallel twins! Because it is cheaper to produce! The Hornet we all know is not a cheap parallel twin! Motorcycle manufacturing companies should compete, which more satisfy the wishes and preferences of motorcyclists! And not to trick them with cheap products and exaggerated advertising! The Transalp that had an indestructible V2 engine was made by parallel twins and they say it's better! I'm a big Honda fan, but it seems that for some time it has detached itself from the wishes of motorcyclists and follows the current trend! I have 3 Honda motorcycles, one from 1992 and two from 1995. I would never buy a so-called "modern" one!
New riders don’t care how many cylinders bikes have. Honda have made an outstanding motorcycle that somehow conforms to euro6, beats the mt07 in every category and is super affordable. That’s the kind of thing new riders care about, not how many cylinders it has. And for the industry to continue, motorcycling needs new riders.
But us old riders also like these bikes 😉 😂
The fuel tank is too small
You still get 200 miles because of how economical it is. My Tuono used to give me 95 😂
Please don't bring that Honda into Derbyshire . It's far too ugly.

Quick shifter? Disgusting technology. You know what else I hate? Fuel injection. And turn signals. And electric starters.
