I don't think there's a Toyota product offered that I wouldn't take in its hybrid form.

The paddles don't "Shift" they instead change the minimum and maximum RPM of the engine for engine braking.

If I’m not mistaken I believe the left is the downshift which she should’ve been using to keep that needle out of the red I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure this guy doesn’t understand the concept of the up-and-down shift paddles but please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong

@@We7hePeople Well in an automatic transmission that is true, where there are actual gears to shift. In an automatic, which you may know, can have around 6-10 gears to shift through. Using paddles to shift those gears would change the RPM of the engine and keep it out of redline as you say, however in this video he is driving a car without a conventional transmission such as one with 6-10 gears.
This car uses a Toyota designed hybrid transmission, one they call an E-CVT. It uses a planetary gearset in combination with an electric motor to produce power for the vehicle and rotate the engine. When you use the paddles in this vehicle, pressing the plus button will increase the maximum RPM of the engine, and using the minus button will decrease the maximum RPM of the engine, but this also depends on vehicle speed.
The paddle shifters in this car won't allow the user to determine his own "gear" per say, instead the transmission will choose its own power ratio dependent on vehicle speed, and the "range" at which the driver chooses on the paddle shifters.
So pressing the minus button on the paddles in this vehicle, will only change the maximum RPM of the engine, and allow for greater engine breaking. However the reason the car doesn't do anything when he was attempting to press the shifter is due to either 1)vehicle speed is too high/low for the computer to determine a safe RPM or 2) It was already set to its maximum position in that given "range."
It's really weird that Toyota even placed paddles in this vehicle in the first place, I think they did it just for the aesthetics and not so much driving performance. Although it can definitely help when going downhill so the user isn't using the brakes so much to slow his speed. Even though in hybrid vehicles the initial braking is mostly taken care of by the hybrid electric motors.
If you are interested in learning more about the Toyota hybrid transmission, I highly encourage you to search "Understanding the Toyota rav4 hybrid" in the youtube search box. He is an automotive professor at Weber State University, and has in incredible amount of knowledge of these transmissions. He goes into great detail covering all topics of the design, and how it all works by showing you a model on the table in from of him. The Toyota rav4 hybrid uses the same transmission as the Toyota Camry hybrid, as well as the Lexus ES300h.

@@ehh2681 Thank you for that. It appears I wasn’t entirely clear on how they worked either. I bought the XSE recently and watched a video which doesn’t really explain things quite in the way you have. Thus far it has seemed to me that I understood what I was doing and that it was having an effect however I do think maybe I should look up what that professor has to say because I was unaware of some of the things that you pointed out and I may be more confused now than I was the first time it was explained at the dealership lol

Apologies if I sound dumb but I’m just curious as I’m from the UK, why are Camrys not in Europe generally? Is it only produced in America?

they are stopped producing them in uk, you buy used one's only

Europe is not a big market for non EU mid size sedans. They don't tend to sell many of them, that's why the Camry isn't available for sale in Europe.

Almost all European countries have the Camry in the Toyota lineup and can be ordered brand new. I am really surprised UK is not included

It's sold here in Norway, ever since it became available as a hybrid with decent fuel economy and low emissions. The regular petrol versions aren't available.
