Man, JP. I am NOT an artist by any stretch, and this evening I was staring at a blank page, terrified but knowing I really wanted to try my hand at drawing a town map for my session two days from now. This video is gold. You are a force of nature! Thank you so much!
Tarakona Tohu is a small traditional fruit farm that has been tended by the Stanier family for nearly 390 years. The 122 acre orchard is set in the south eastern corner of the rolling Herefordshire countryside, near Ledbury, close to the Malvern Hills.
This was a big help. I think I get to go too detailed when I think about drawing something like this, and then I just never do it because, "It'll take too long!" Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the great content, that you are making. This hand-draw maps, get me back nice memories, when I was younger and tried to program a rpg games. Based on the gothic world, I have draw a lot of maps, plans, stories, characters. Never finished it, ended up in dreams, mostly because of over scope of those projects, but this video reminds me a lot.
Great town map, the only thing missing was a Cider Mill, if you have the best apples in the world you need to make some Apple Cider. Would also be a potential trade commodity. Love your tutorials, really are informative.
amazing work....asking for next map....a church, a bell tower, a wizard's tower, maybe a whole tutorial on how to do individual buildings and make them stand out?
I think it would be fun to name the town something to do with the name of the apples, If you've got a name for the apples already. If not I'd suggest something like Starbite Apples and then you could have some cool folklore surrounding the grove popping up after a fallen star crashed nearby and that being where the apples came from. Then you could call the town something like Starfaln or something. This was a fun little train of thought, I hope you get a kick out of reading this at the very least! Edit: The star could have fallen in like the river and changed the water in the area and made the apples grow with a cool colouring and maybe some fun magic properties! Okay I need to stop I'm having far too much fun building this up and it's not even my Town!
There's a town on the Queensland border (the state in Australia in which I live) that has apples as it's primary industry. The town is called Applethorpe.
Great video and great Intro! A name I have for the town could be: Drakenvoss. It roughly translates from Icelandic to mean Dragon's waterfall. Perhaps the town is near this massive waterfall from the mountains where the dragon keeps his true lair and hoard.
Serpentine Grove, Fort Sunther (keeping the name of when it was a military fort/town), Dotan Riverfront, Delicious Ruby (or some sort of red jewel that signifies the apples, and since it's a dragon protecting them), that's all I can think of haha. Words like Orchard, Old, Fort, Valley, River, Hill, and Treasure kept popping in my head
to come up with a town name randomly choose words from other languages and mix them together. the languages can either D&D based languages or real life languages. you can also chop up words and rearrange them to create new names. assigning numbers to word, languages, and syllables, and rolling a dice is a great way to create something interesting and unique for an adventure
Cool Dragon Name + stead(place) or halden(hillside) or wald(forrest) or ach(river) or just google "German Toponymy" and look at the suffixes. Arthakstead, Lurhalden, Bayathwald, Naxumach
At first I thought a dragon eating apples was kind of, well odd. Then I remembered the apatosaurus, the largest animal ever which was a herbivore. Kudos for you for thinking outside the box. I think on some level of also makes your new town kid friendly, which is great for dads who want to teach their kids d&d.
Muffins! The dragon wants muffins. When I was a kid there was a book called _The Muffin Dragon_, IIRC. The dragon initially extorted the baker for all the muffins. After the baker went broke, then the dragon worked out a deal where it provided heat for the ovens. As an adult, it seemed like an underwear gnomes situation, but as a kid I loved it.
I just love your videos about drawing maps! You're a inspiration to me to improving my future games, i hope more people see what you are doing. Oh, for town's name, how about Edens garden...?
This is an older video, but a few of these map videos, this one especially, inspired me recently to try it for my next game. I’m really struggling, not so much with the drawing of houses and trees, but with figuring out where to place them and factoring in like, hills. I just can’t seem to do hills and I don’t know how close a house can be to a river. So many things just look awkward due to placement alone ☹️ still having fun doing it.
Glad you're having fun! Definitely start with pencil so you can erase and move things around. It's great you can tell what feels awkward, now it's just a matter of changing it until it doesn't anymore ;)
Here's a list of words that gets me thinking about a riverside town that grows apples. Red, Scarlett, Crimson, Ruby, Vermillion Ford, Stream, River, Bank, Crossing, Brook, Creek Orchard, Garden, Grove, Yard Apple, fruit Town, burg, ville, ton Somehow I like Ruby Grove and Rubyford best followed by Crimson Creek. The Ruby names evoke the value of the apples for the townsfolk, it could also recall the color of the dragon or its fiery breath. With that said, I really like how Crimson Creek rolls off the tongue. Lastly, Applefort is also simple and evocative and many places where named as such.
Just found this video. I didn’t know you or the quality of your content, but I am 1 minute in and I want to thank you for taking a stand for justice. You didn’t have to do it, but you did.
I'm so glad I found your channel! I'm trying to make a city map for my fantasy book and I'm struggling to design a major element for the city. My people in this country are all tree-dwellers, they live up in the trees with platforms and bridges drawn in between. How would you translate a home-tree from a top-view? A tree with a spiralling staircase around the truck that leads into the platforms and the bridges?
Some name ideas: Drappleton, Afaldraig (Welsh for "Apple Dragon"), or maybe Tarakapu (a portmanteau of the Samoan words for "apple dragon") Also, good on you for putting that statement at the top of the video.
THIS IS AMIZING stuff JP!! When will you be doing that character drawing creation video I'm eager for that to come out. But all things considered you are doing an amazing job love your videos.
I would name it Rödpärlastad, I usually look for a foreign language me or my players do not speak and translate a few words looking for something that sounds cool. In this case Red Gem Town translated to swedish :D Idk is a trick I usually follow because i get stuck at naming things sometimes
A couple thoughts. You might try varying the size of tree outlines. It's hard to suggest different types of trees in this style, but using different sizes at least suggests variety (and makes things like orchards where all the trees are the same size stand out). Remember that where you draw shadows suggests the position of the sun. If the shadows are in the southeast, the sun is to the north and your town is going to be in the southern hemisphere, which may be important in world building.
May I ask if these grey pens are special slow drying pens? Because I have the problem that with all the pens I could find i draw darker when I overlap the strokes. Did I do something wrong?
Oh! Forgot to suggest a name! How about Dragons Delect? Or if the dragon has a name, ______’s Delect? I am a huge user of alliteration in my maps 🤣 So used for a dragon name generator, something like Delbarro’s Delect? Before the apples were brought up I was thinking Dragons Meet, which would be like a double meaning, the people there meet the dragon for disputes but it also means the townfolk are just meatbags to him 🤷🏼♂️
In the lands to the east a small town by spanking over a dark river. A dark Shady Town guarded by the Mystical Dragon mordu that protects the small town from raids of goblins and Orcs. The small town of DRAGON HALLOW has been known for its rare Enchanted apples.
That is tricky! In this case, I think the fort/castle is probably too small and the apple trees too big. I think it's really all about the relationship between stuff. So in the planning phase, figuring out how big trees are or any other sort of natural element can help you determine how big the buildings should be in relation.
Could you go over how you scan and clean up your maps in a tutorial? I'm having trouble removing the blue lines, and can't for the life of me find a tutorial on this exact issue. It's probably something like "how to remove artefacts" or something but I was wondering if there is an easier way of going about it.
I scan at 600 dpi (300 for color.) There are several ways of getting rid of the blue lines. I usually just adjust the levels (Image>Adjustments>Levles) in Photoshop. Try looking up "removing non-photo blue" for whatever program you use. Good luck!
Fantastic video! Here are a few I thought of Blossom Breeze Valley, Pitsville, Cobbler Creek, Sleepy Orchard. I am curious as to the size, weight, and brand of paper you are using? It works well with the markers! Much appreciated!
Thanks! The paper is just white printer paper that is a tiny bit thicker than regular. Not cover stock level, but not super thin either. Cheap stuff, nothing fancy.

Another awesome video JP! Really love watching your method and talent on display. I NEEEEED THAT COPIC MARKER 🤯. And thank you for saying something about BLM! You’re the best dude!
I came here to get tips to draw towns. I clicked like during the intro. That is something that shouldn't need to be said in 2020 but the world is still backwards. Oklahoma Football head coach Lincoln Riley said it best in my opinion, "All lives won't matter until Black Lives do too."
Adam Janssen black lives DO matter and people still complain about things like this, yes its horrible to kill anyone because of the color of their skin or really its horrible to kill anyone period but some people are honestly looking for something to get “oppressed” by because then people treat them like the best thing that ever happened in the world
It’s really a shame that BLM essentially became a terrorist organization that destroyed their own areas and then stole all that money from people who just wanted to see change and spent it on mansions and massive parties. Those areas are worse now then ever. Also that was a stupid quote by that coach. “All lives matter” includes black lives.
That’s a great village of about 100 people. I like the orchards. But there should be about 1000 acres of fields, like, really close by, not random trees.
Beulisunberg , after the last remaining adventurer of Kessler's companions. A half-elf named Beulah Sun, the partys Bard. Who talked the dragon into the position it holds now after watching all of her party die gruesome deaths. Talk about a nice time for a natural twenty to get rolled.
Be cool if you would maybe make up an Amazon shop or with list that would have all the pens and such you use a lot of. Would be great to grab some of the things you use.
Try it out yourself! Test some different approaches on a scrap sheet of paper. Maybe try keeping the general shape round, but instead of little semi circles, the trees are made out of more angular lines?
I'm obviously a long time late on this video but I was amazed at how "professional" those 2 little shades made this map look.
Suggestion: once you've inked the map, scan it in to the computer. That way you can print it out and colour the printed version so you don't mess up the original. Then, if you make a mistake, you can just reprint the map and re-colour.
