My long 1/2" Tekton is my leverage go-to beast. I have yet to break it even with 320 pounds of me standing on it. I split an 1 1/4" socket, but the ratchet held up.
I cannot speak for the other truck brands but when it comes to bolt spin on or spin off, I really appreciate the low backdrag on my 3/8 drive SnapOn dual drive locking flex head more than anything I think. I rarely lock the detents because I'm always swinging the handle in two directions and the detents alone lock well enough. I use the crap out of it and It was money well spent for a go to ratchet. People knock Pittsburgh but what they don't realize is you can buy the entire Pittsburgh collection for the price of a single truck brand which is just what I did a few years ago. You learn what patterns you grab and use the most and what features to look for before spending big bucks on a quality ratchet. Pittsburgh has left me with oddball patterns I rarely use and have gotten me out of a pinch a number of times. I can't see spending truck brand money on patterns I rarely use. Another reason I won't knock Pittsburgh. I've got my sights set on that Gearwrench 1/2 drive flex head with 24" handle for a semi breaker bar. Will be interesting to see how it performs and holds up.
I have a 3/8 inch drive flex head ratchet that I really enjoy. I've had it since the 80s I think, so well before all these really neat ratchet choices. I'm looking for a 1/4 inch flex handle, but for this application I don't need lots of leverage. I currently use my Mac tools 1/4 inch that's maybe 5 inch, it came with the set. I used to be a heavy equipment mechanic, but then I joined the military and sold everything but my 1/4 inch set. I have a bit of everything as my tools are a collection of Christmas, birthday and repair project needed tools since '79. I could listen to you talk ratchets and tools all day. I have tools from every manufacturer and they all seem to work for me. Thanks for making the video!
I bought the xp120 set few months ago after watching your videos, I have but them through hell, beat the sh*t out of them, really can't believe how good they are and four ratchets in the set for the price of a snap on 3/8.

For my 1/2" drive ratchets, I usually pull out either the Gearwrench locking flex head 84 tooth of the Husky locking flex head 100 position, both in long handle. They both have great torque application. The Gearwrench is a little longer (more torque) and the Husky has a lower swing arc (sometimes useful). In 3/8", my top 2 are both Matco long handled ratchets. One is the locking flex head (my first TH-cam tool win ever from Justin Dow!) and the other is the long-handled fixed head. If I need something a little shorter, I usually grab the Kobalt gearless ratchet. Ultra-low swing arc and totally silent operation. I don't typically need a 1/4" ratchet, but in the event I do, I'll grab my Vector long-handled flex head if I need a little more reach or the tried & true Craftsman fixed head raised panel ratchet. Still going strong after 35 years!
I like your options man, for me my favorite go to is definitely Duralast. In my opinion they are the "goldilocks" of hand tools. Cheap enough to buy, and expensive enough to maintain and take care of.
Believe it or not, I tend to use my HFT (Pittsburgh) flex-head 3/8th drive ratchet most often. The biggest reason is, I’m working on older, rusted, junkers for friends, family, etc, and frankly don’t want to beat up my nicer Snap-on or Matco ratchets. There are even times I use my vintage ratchets with much lower teeth count just because you can generate more torque than the higher tooth count ratchets. I have nearly 40 ratchets, so my goal is to use everything at some point just to validate the need of having so many in the box. Great video!!!
I'm surprised by saying this, lately my favorite go to is 1/2 ratchet is the long flex head icon. My go to 3/8 is actually the new black locking flex head husky. I have more expensive ratchets but these ones work well for most of what I do and is easy to get replaced if something happens. Like you in normally will just grab a flex head. Can't beat the snap on if you just need a nice strong fixed head ratchet.
ratchets are basically the only thing i am brand loyal on. I love snap on ratchets. have em from 1/4 to 3/4 inch and use em hard.that said my carlyle has been good too.
I love my matco 3/8 flex head comfort grip. But i got a used cornwell 72 tooth non locking flex head for cheap, and honestly thats my go to ratchet, its so nice and smooth and i love the detented flex head
I use to only use a breaker bar or the USA made 3/8” Craftsman ratchet but it’s shorter than standard so there is almost no leverage. I have learned to use the longest and smallest drive that will fit in a situation. Sometimes it’s my 1/2” drive 24” GearWrench 84 tooth flex head and sometimes it’s a micro 1/4”. I don’t hesitate to switch them out and I have a lot of good options. Although I honestly use my impacts as much or possibly more since they are faster.
I know this is old post but I absolutely love the wright contour grips. I'm thinking of re-buying the knurled grips I have into the contour versions of it.
I just bought the ez-red 3 set flexible locking ratchets. Pretty beefy ratchets that are also extendable. I just wish they had the quick release. The sockets are held in great but I had a problem removing one while working with dirty hands under my car. It took me a while to get the 10 mm socket off. Other than this I like them. I didn't have any and love how compact they can get for storage. The 1/2 is pretty chunky and heavy duty. But because they are extendable they are generally heavier than all normal ratchets.
When it comes to ratchets I either chose Snapon or the new style fine tooth Mac ones. Not because of the big names, I just really like the way they operate and feel in my hand. Great vid btw 👍🏻 greetings from Scotland 🏴👍🏻
If I had to splurge and get one ratchet(I work on mostly my truck and a 50cc scooter), what would you recommend? My favorite tool right now is from Harbour Freight for $30. Pittsburgh Pro 1/4 In, 3/8 In. Drive Long Reach Dual Flex Head Ratchet. It is by far the most useful tool I own. I use it literally for everything. Spark plugs, Head Gasket replacement, brakes... Aside from my impact wrench, this is with me all the time.
I seem to have a thing for the long ratchets. My old favorite was a 3/8 Craftsman long polished tear drop (44833) despite only being a 36 tooth. Just long enough for some leverage. I’ve since replaced it with a 90t Gearwrench partly because I seem to have misplaced the Craftsman. Recently though, I’ve found the ultra longs useful. Including having to use a 24” 1/2 drive on a 14mm wrench (very convoluted) to break a driveshaft bolt loose on a Frontier.
Haha ya I remember I never had long Ratchets growing up and always used cheater pipes. So it's definitely nice having so many different options available now.

My go to 90% of the time is my snap on fhl80 3/8 comfort grip. I also have it in a non locking flex head but honestly don't use it as much as I thought I would. Next is a snap on tl72 1/4. Again I have this in both locking and non locking flex head. I gotta say I'm not crazy about the snap on locking mechanism. Lastly 1/2 is a snap on sl80 or a proto 1/2. Both are awesome. I have a multitude of different tools but I really love snap on ratchets. I purchased the 3/8 New and every other ratchet came from eBay. My tractor supply picked up gearwrench recently and I'd like to try a 120xp ratchet.

Snap on is definitely my go to ratchet. Although the Milwaukee ones (hand tool, not the cordless ratchet[I do have one of those to and it’s great]) are really really nice as well, and I reach for it when I need a shorter 3/8 ratchet. The only thing I hate about snap on ratchets, is the fact that it makes 95% of other ratchets I use feel like inferior junk 😂
Have you tried the Black Husky 100 tooth 3/8" long handle quick release locking flex head ratchet ? I've been very happy with mine . I feel it's very close in design to the matco version except it has a quick release button which I prefer
Carlyle is such an underrated brand, I’d put most of their stuff in the high mid grade range, with some lines of tools being better than the premium brands
I actually do not care for quick release either. I believe a non quick release anvil is stronger (less material taken out). The other reason is dirt and grit can get in around that area. Like anything else, it's personal preference. My most commonly used ratchets are... *2004 Snap on 36 tooth 3/8 drive in the industrial black finish. It's been through pure hell and will not die... *SK 3/8 45170 round head - The design is timeless and very simple to service. It can be upgraded with a DT series head to double the tooth count for less than cost of another import ratchet. *Late '70's Snap on flex head long handle (s711a) 1/2 drive. This ratchet was passed down to me. It is an animal and the victim of many cheater pipe sessions. It's been apart twice to be relubed and contains the original everything in the head. If this ratchet will not remove it, you will probably need to go to a hefty air gun. Yes, I do love my USA stuff...
My top three of all time are definitely #1 my old milwaukee m12 3/8 drive electric ratchet (need to retire it and want to get a long head version but been to cheap since I'm not a professional) this is my go to for most jobs. #2 tekton 3/8 drive XL flex head quick release. This is my 2nd most used ratchet for everything from hard to reach to the messier jobs I don't want my milwaukee touching. This ratchet essentially is my muscle man and Houdini of ratchets punching above its weight and getting stuff most of my friends though only possible with a combo wrench. And #3 my carlyle 1/2 drive low profile 15inch 48 tooth ratchet. This guy is my problem solver. He was purchased during a time when I was upgrading old pickups suspension and adding lift kits too and quickly realized the old reliable tekton wasn't strong enough and not everything can be solved with a milwaukee Ougha-impacto-matic.
It's a toss up between my proto precision 90 ratchet 3/8 drive 13" flex head and my Gearwrench 120xp. If I want to put the wammy down on something I have a Williams long S52 1/2" drive. Even though it has a low tooth count, Im not afraid to torque something down with it or losen a stubborn fastener. I also have a proto 1/2" drive 90 tooth precision 18" flexhead on order. I'm digging the proto! I understand it's the same as a MAC axis?
Just wondering what's wrong with a quick release ratchet? When doing mechanical work with oily fingers, it really helps to change sockets quickly. I was trying to replace my old Craftsman 3/8" ratchet and was skeptical about swivel head ratchets. I wanted to get a Napa Carlyle flex-head ratchet but when I saw good reviews about Pittsburg Pro 3/8" swivel head from Harbor Freight, I bought it. It's cheaper than any other brand and comes with lifetime warranty made in Taiwan. I am surprised how useful and smooth it is. I am DIYer so I think it will last for awhile.
Pirouz Farhani nothing is wrong with a quick release ratchet. I personally just like the sleep design and feel of a non quick release. And ya no point in spending more then you have to if you can find a good tool for cheap and it works for what you need. 👍🏻
muzz3256 I’ve seen videos showing them to fail sooner that the non-quick release version but most reviewers are putting more torque on these ratchets than normal use would ever apply. I also just like the sleek design of nonquick release but don’t think the strength difference is a valid argument.
Best one I found for the money is the first gen taskforce 1/2 drive very well made It took everything i thrown at it but sadly i didn't get the 3/8 i regret but taskforce went crap now
Matco 88 1/2” drive 30” length locking flex head ratchet. I take it with me on long trips incase I have a flat and need to bust a stubborn lugnut or incase someone attacks me.
Great video thanks brother. Well I like your selection. I can't beat your selection. I go to my Mac 1/2 in got both fixed head and flex they are pretty long. I have in 3/8 in a older Snap on and 1/4 in would be a Snap on or a Stanley. I also have a Proto 1in drive the only one I have that size. I think I would like to try Gear wrench some day. Bro get the fixed gearwrench 120xp 24” I love the flex head gearwrench but for the 1/4 and 3/8 like you mentioned, when your grabbing a 1/2” it because you’re usually dealing with a higher torque application and you dint want that flex head moving. I have both the flex and fixed Handel gearwrench in the xl hands 11” 1/4, 18” 3/8 and 24” 1/2 amazing and all for less the the price of one regular long (18”) snap-on 1/2 drive 1/2 81271 (1/4 and 3/8 xl set ) 81364 (1/2 xl ratchet)
damn all that looks untouched brand new how do you do it.. everything I own even my new stuff less then year old looks like shit compared to that scratched up covered it grease and so on.
ryan dussel all of my personal tools are used at home. My job provides me with all of my work tools. So when I’m at home working I always take the time to clean them after a job. Mostly I just use wd40
Yeah I actually love the craftsman slim 84 tooth and the 75 tooth are pretty sweet also but they are very thick in the handle makes them heavy. I do have a craftsman extreme grip series 75 tooth with comfort grip that has an incredibly thin head design that also works great and the comfort grip is nice. For big torque I've got power built from orielys 24 inch long comfort grip that can really take some pressure. But overall just in general I love the feel of the ampro industrial ratchets 72 tooth very smooth action. I admit they look almost identical to several other brands I've seen tho I'm sure it's the same factory in Taiwan making them all. But they do seem to be better quality coming from Taiwan than china
I didn't see this video before I commented on the other =p but my favorite ratchet is a TONE RH3VHW its a 3/8 anvil on a fullsize 1/4 roto head ratchet with a nut bolster to put a wrench on. Its made in Japan and really light and I assume strong with that bolstered section.

Yeah ratchets, I have a bunch, can't find my made in the USA 1/2 Craftsman ratchet, thought I had it in my car, I'll find it when im not looking for it, I'm an old S-K kinda guy, my shop has them 1/4, 3/8, and half, the 1/4 was here when I started in 1978, bought my S-K 3/8 30.$ bucks and I said to self man that was alot of money. Now that same ratchet is over 60$, I do have gearwrench ratchets, 1/4 and 3/8, one of my favorite is a new Craftsman in 1/4 it's great for driving bits, I also have in 1/4 a Snap-on THLF72, a long flex-head comfort grip, probably the best ratchet I've ever used, I have a ratchet I'm trading in a 3/8 FLL80 and extra long, it's to long, I've never used it and came with a buy this and get this kinda deal, in 1/2 my favorite is a SL80A, snap-on, that's a bad ass ratchet.

I use a 1/4 “ snap on fixed. For my 3/8 I use a variety but my go to seems to be my sk flex head 10.9 “ handle. It’s a little bit lower tooth count but I don’t mind low tooth count ratchets because I been using them since I was really young. Also use a 30 tooth snap on fixed head that my uncle gave me. 1/2” I use a duralast long handle flex head and a Pittsburgh 1/2 breaker bar
Sounds like that matco 1/2 could use a dab of grease. Well as for me you know i love my snap on locking flex heads, was dissapointed no broken ratchets though lol

I use Carlyle every day at work and it holds up very well. And priced much better then snap on. I would only by the snap on if I found a really good deal on it.
Just a personal preference. I like to be able to just grab the socket and pull it off. Plus technically the ratchet drive portion should be stronger since it doesn't have to be hollowed out for the quick release mechanism.
TonyTheTechnician I have the Duralast version and the Wright 3430. The Wright one is like a piece of jewelry, it’s in a league all it’s own. But the Duralast is easier to switch positions and only a bit longer. Although I like the Wright 3430 more, I find myself grabbing the Duralast one more often.
This one time I was working in a barn with an old guy who was hard of hearing. I was working under a tractor fixing some wiring that has been chewed through and I asked him to "hand me the ratchet" a few seconds later he comes back from looking under the hood and puts something in my hand. I look over and he put some rat shit in my hand. I said "hand me the RATCH---ETTTT--- not rat shit damnit!" He was one of those guys you never knew if he was serious or not. He would mess with your head all day long.
You have so many ratchets. Do you really need to use all? I have watched your gearwrench review and if you can provide some opinionsfor me? Is 84t low profile head really useful comparing to 120xp. I saw there are 2 types of flexi head on 3/8 one with locking, one without. Is the one without locking feature easy to slip off the angle? And how much torque can 3/8 flexi head be afforded? Hi, This is going to sound like a really dumb question but I don’t really know a thing about sockets or stuff. I bought a 3/8 gear wrench socket drive for trying to replace my 02 sensor in my car. If I set it to OFF does that mean I’m loosening it or is it the opposite effect or something? Either way, thanks and cool video.
Right now my HF flex head and composites are my go to ratchets. I am looking to invest into a Milwaukee fuel ratchet. I really like the feature's of those Gear Wrench flex heads. Tony how do those compare to HF flex heads? I just might have to upgrade to the Gear Wrench ratchets.
Erik Crawley I had the hf ones as well and they weren’t bad at all. I believe the gw was better but it depends on if you want the 120xp or 84t. One has locking and one is semi locking. Both are great though. I think you would enjoy them
I’ve used the HF’s for 2yrs now and have been quite surprised by how much I like them! For me, the extra 12 teeth in the gearwrench are not worth the price difference.
Hey, I don't know a lot about tools, but I'm looking for a ratchet that has a lot of teeth as well as a very light "back stroke", is there such a thing? Max Torque isn't really much of a problem, I'd use a sturdier one for those. Price also not that important. I have no problem paying for quality, especially if it will likely survive me... :-D
What size 1/4? 1/2?? If you still haven’t got it get 120xp 1/4 gear wrench long handle you can find them 20-30 bucks amazon or hd online and I can tell you it just as good as the tool truck ones but if going like 1/2 look for a Bacho slim trust me on that not very popular in us it’s German but for about 40-60 bucks it’s got one the most compact 1/2 head I’ve seen plus it’s tool truck quality
You sound like FRM with that Milwaukee ratchet, but hey time is money even when your at home. I'm ratchet agnostic as long as the tooth count is high enough.

Tony, If you can get your hands on a set of Cornwell 100 tooth roto ratchets, I am sure you will change your mind on the roto ratchets. I was not impressed by the Gearwrench roto ratchets and I own nearly every single 120xp wrench and ratchet they sell. I found a set of 100 tooth roto ratchets that Matco sells, but turns out they are rebranded Cornwell ratchets. I freaking love em. The Porkchop it’s not that I don’t like them I just don’t think it’s necessary. Without it you have a slimmer head design and I’ve never had any issues with sockets falling off so I guess I just prefer them without it

Grew up using my dads SKs, always hated the triangle reversing mechanism. Had Craftsman until I knew better. Have a set of Carlyle 90 "extra" long cushion grips & 120XL extended length flex heads cushion grips in 1/4 & 3/8 - the 1/2 aren't available in cushion grip?

Trust me it's not hard to grab a little wd40 on a rag and wipe your stuff off after a job. I tell you one thing I don't take advice or reviews from people who treat tools like crap 👋

Lol they are definitely scratched. Maybe not the new Tekton ratchets or Carlyle ratchets bc they are brand new but I also have like 40 ratchets. Also tools aren't just for making money. They are for saving money as well. Trust me my tools at work don't look this good but that's just bc it's much harder work and a much faster pace. Where this is at home and it saves me money by allowing me to do all the work myself instead of paying someone else. So if I have the time which I do at home. I take very good care of my tools.

I refurbish vacuum cleaners as a hobby so a quarter inch is mainly what I use for that. I find that rotos and micro ratchets are the bomb.

I have found the 120xps to lack in strength, I’ve had much better luck with the 84 or 90 tooth GW ratchets. They’re great.

The biggest reason is, I’m working on older, rusted, junkers for friends, family, etc, and frankly don’t want to beat up my nicer Snap-on or Matco ratchets. There are even times I use my vintage ratchets with much lower teeth count just because you can generate more torque than the higher tooth count ratchets. I have nearly 40 ratchets, so my goal is to use everything at some point just to validate the need of having so many in the box. Great video!!!
The Snap On dual 80 is the best ratchet out there, hands down. But the gearwrench and tekton ratchets are close seconds.

I'm surprised by saying this, lately my favorite go to is 1/2 ratchet is the long flex head icon. My go to 3/8 is actually the new black locking flex head husky.
I have more expensive ratchets but these ones work well for most of what I do and is easy to get replaced if something happens.
Like you in normally will just grab a flex head. Can't beat the snap on if you just need a nice strong fixed head ratchet.
ratchets are basically the only thing i am brand loyal on. I love snap on ratchets. have em from 1/4 to 3/4 inch and use em hard.that said my carlyle has been good too.

I love my matco 3/8 flex head comfort grip. But i got a used cornwell 72 tooth non locking flex head for cheap, and honestly thats my go to ratchet, its so nice and smooth and i love the detented flex head
I use to only use a breaker bar or the USA made 3/8” Craftsman ratchet but it’s shorter than standard so there is almost no leverage. I have learned to use the longest and smallest drive that will fit in a situation. Sometimes it’s my 1/2” drive 24” GearWrench 84 tooth flex head and sometimes it’s a micro 1/4”. I don’t hesitate to switch them out and I have a lot of good options. Although I honestly use my impacts as much or possibly more since they are faster.
Agreed. Same here. I make it as easy on myself as possible. I never come close to a ratchets breaking point
You've gotta try the wright tool 2426 , their Contour grip is second to none and way better than snap on.
I know this is old post but I absolutely love the wright contour grips. I'm thinking of re-buying the knurled grips I have into the contour versions of it.
I just bought the ez-red 3 set flexible locking ratchets. Pretty beefy ratchets that are also extendable. I just wish they had the quick release. The sockets are held in great but I had a problem removing one while working with dirty hands under my car. It took me a while to get the 10 mm socket off. Other than this I like them. I didn't have any and love how compact they can get for storage. The 1/2 is pretty chunky and heavy duty. But because they are extendable they are generally heavier than all normal ratchets.

You have to try a Nepros ratchet made by KTC out of Japan. They make Snap-On rachets look like disposables.😎
When it comes to ratchets I either chose Snapon or the new style fine tooth Mac ones. Not because of the big names, I just really like the way they operate and feel in my hand.

Snap On dual 80 ratchets are the best hands down. But for someone who doesnt need snap on, many other brands are very good.
Agreed snap makes an amazing ratchet but those who don't need top of the line can be perfectly happy with many other brands 👍
Better than Proto Precision?
If I had to splurge and get one ratchet(I work on mostly my truck and a 50cc scooter), what would you recommend? My favorite tool right now is from Harbour Freight for $30. Pittsburgh Pro 1/4 In, 3/8 In. Drive Long Reach Dual Flex Head Ratchet. It is by far the most useful tool I own. I use it literally for everything. Spark plugs, Head Gasket replacement, brakes... Aside from my impact wrench, this is with me all the time.
I seem to have a thing for the long ratchets. My old favorite was a 3/8 Craftsman long polished tear drop (44833) despite only being a 36 tooth. Just long enough for some leverage. I’ve since replaced it with a 90t Gearwrench partly because I seem to have misplaced the Craftsman.
Recently though, I’ve found the ultra longs useful. Including having to use a 24” 1/2 drive on a 14mm wrench (very convoluted) to break a driveshaft bolt loose on a Frontier.
Haha ya I remember I never had long Ratchets growing up and always used cheater pipes. So it's definitely nice having so many different options available now.

My go to 90% of the time is my snap on fhl80 3/8 comfort grip. I also have it in a non locking flex head but honestly don't use it as much as I thought I would. Next is a snap on tl72 1/4. Again I have this in both locking and non locking flex head. I gotta say I'm not crazy about the snap on locking mechanism. Lastly 1/2 is a snap on sl80 or a proto 1/2. Both are awesome. I have a multitude of different tools but I really love snap on ratchets. I purchased the 3/8 New and every other ratchet came from eBay. My tractor supply picked up gearwrench recently and I'd like to try a 120xp ratchet.

Snap on is definitely my go to ratchet. Although the Milwaukee ones (hand tool, not the cordless ratchet[I do have one of those to and it’s great]) are really really nice as well, and I reach for it when I need a shorter 3/8 ratchet.
The only thing I hate about snap on ratchets, is the fact that it makes 95% of other ratchets I use feel like inferior junk 😂

Have you tried the Black Husky 100 tooth 3/8" long handle quick release locking flex head ratchet ? I've been very happy with mine . I feel it's very close in design to the matco version except it has a quick release button which I prefer

Carlyle is such an underrated brand, I’d put most of their stuff in the high mid grade range, with some lines of tools being better than the premium brands
I actually do not care for quick release either. I believe a non quick release anvil is stronger (less material taken out). The other reason is dirt and grit can get in around that area. Like anything else, it's personal preference. My most commonly used ratchets are...
*2004 Snap on 36 tooth 3/8 drive in the industrial black finish. It's been through pure hell and will not die...
*SK 3/8 45170 round head - The design is timeless and very simple to service. It can be upgraded with a DT series head to double the tooth count for less than cost of another import ratchet.
*Late '70's Snap on flex head long handle (s711a) 1/2 drive. This ratchet was passed down to me. It is an animal and the victim of many cheater pipe sessions. It's been apart twice to be relubed and contains the original everything in the head. If this ratchet will not remove it, you will probably need to go to a hefty air gun.

My top three of all time are definitely #1 my old milwaukee m12 3/8 drive electric ratchet (need to retire it and want to get a long head version but been to cheap since I'm not a professional) this is my go to for most jobs.
#2 tekton 3/8 drive XL flex head quick release. This is my 2nd most used ratchet for everything from hard to reach to the messier jobs I don't want my milwaukee touching. This ratchet essentially is my muscle man and Houdini of ratchets punching above its weight and getting stuff most of my friends though only possible with a combo wrench.
And #3 my carlyle 1/2 drive low profile 15inch 48 tooth ratchet. This guy is my problem solver. He was purchased during a time when I was upgrading old pickups suspension and adding lift kits too and quickly realized the old reliable tekton wasn't strong enough and not everything can be solved with a milwaukee Ougha-impacto-matic.
I use my locking flex head by snap on most but I have an old flex head sk that my grandpa gave me and that thing is a brute

It's a toss up between my proto precision 90 ratchet 3/8 drive 13" flex head and my Gearwrench 120xp. If I want to put the wammy down on something I have a Williams long S52 1/2" drive. Even though it has a low tooth count, Im not afraid to torque something down with it or losen a stubborn fastener. I also have a proto 1/2" drive 90 tooth precision 18" flexhead on order. I'm digging the proto! I understand it's the same as a MAC axis?

Just wondering what's wrong with a quick release ratchet? When doing mechanical work with oily fingers, it really helps to change sockets quickly. I was trying to replace my old Craftsman 3/8" ratchet and was skeptical about swivel head ratchets. I wanted to get a Napa Carlyle flex-head ratchet but when I saw good reviews about Pittsburg Pro 3/8" swivel head from Harbor Freight, I bought it. It's cheaper than any other brand and comes with lifetime warranty made in Taiwan. I am surprised how useful and smooth it is. I am DIYer so I think it will last for awhile.
Pirouz Farhani nothing is wrong with a quick release ratchet. I personally just like the sleep design and feel of a non quick release. And ya no point in spending more then you have to if you can find a good tool for cheap and it works for what you need. 👍🏻
Some say that the square drive is weaker because a hole is drilled into it. Is that true? I have no idea.
muzz3256 I’ve seen videos showing them to fail sooner that the non-quick release version but most reviewers are putting more torque on these ratchets than normal use would ever apply. I also just like the sleek design of nonquick release but don’t think the strength difference is a valid argument.

I have in 3/8 in a older Snap on and 1/4 in would be a Snap on or a Stanley. I also have a Proto 1in drive the only one I have that size. I think I would like to try Gear wrench some day. Bro get the fixed gearwrench 120xp 24” I love the flex head gearwrench but for the 1/4 and 3/8 like you mentioned, when your grabbing a 1/2” it because you’re usually dealing with a higher torque application and you dint want that flex head moving. I have both the flex and fixed Handel gearwrench in the xl hands 11” 1/4, 18” 3/8 and 24” 1/2 amazing and all for less the the price of one regular long (18”) snap-on 1/2 drive 1/2

Yeah I actually love the craftsman slim 84 tooth and the 75 tooth are pretty sweet also but they are very thick in the handle makes them heavy. I do have a craftsman extreme grip series 75 tooth with comfort grip that has an incredibly thin head design that also works great and the comfort grip is nice. For big torque I've got power built from orielys 24 inch long comfort grip that can really take some pressure. But overall just in general I love the feel of the ampro industrial ratchets 72 tooth very smooth action. I admit they look almost identical to several other brands I've seen tho I'm sure it's the same factory in Taiwan making them all. But they do seem to be better quality coming from Taiwan than china
I didn't see this video before I commented on the other =p but my favorite ratchet is a TONE RH3VHW its a 3/8 anvil on a fullsize 1/4 roto head ratchet with a nut bolster to put a wrench on. Its made in Japan and really light and I assume strong with that bolstered section.

Yeah ratchets, I have a bunch, can't find my made in the USA 1/2 Craftsman ratchet, thought I had it in my car, I'll find it when im not looking for it, I'm an old S-K kinda guy, my shop has them 1/4, 3/8, and half, the 1/4 was here when I started in 1978, bought my S-K 3/8 30.$ bucks and I said to self man that was alot of money. Now that same ratchet is over 60$, I do have gearwrench ratchets, 1/4 and 3/8, one of my favorite is a new Craftsman in 1/4 it's great for driving bits, I also have in 1/4 a Snap-on THLF72, a long flex-head comfort grip, probably the best ratchet I've ever used, I have a ratchet I'm trading in a 3/8 FLL80 and extra long, it's to long, I've never used it and came with a buy this and get this kinda deal, in 1/2 my favorite is a SL80A, snap-on, that's a bad ass ratchet.

I use a 1/4 “ snap on fixed. For my 3/8 I use a variety but my go to seems to be my sk flex head 10.9 “ handle. It’s a little bit lower tooth count but I don’t mind low tooth count ratchets because I been using them since I was really young. Also use a 30 tooth snap on fixed head that my uncle gave me. 1/2” I use a duralast long handle flex head and a Pittsburgh 1/2 breaker bar

I use Carlyle every day at work and it holds up very well. And priced much better then snap on. I would only by the snap on if I found a really good deal on it.

Why did you move away from quick release ratchets?
Just a personal preference. I like to be able to just grab the socket and pull it off. Plus technically the ratchet drive portion should be stronger since it doesn't have to be hollowed out for the quick release mechanism.

Have you seen the Duralast 3/8 in a 1/4 in body? Should check them out they are small. I like them get in some real tight spot

TonyTheTechnician I have the Duralast version and the Wright 3430. The Wright one is like a piece of jewelry, it’s in a league all it’s own. But the Duralast is easier to switch positions and only a bit longer. Although I like the Wright 3430 more, I find myself grabbing the Duralast one more often.

This one time I was working in a barn with an old guy who was hard of hearing. I was working under a tractor fixing some wiring that has been chewed through and I asked him to "hand me the ratchet" a few seconds later he comes back from looking under the hood and puts something in my hand. I look over and he put some rat shit in my hand. I said "hand me the RATCH---ETTTT--- not rat shit damnit!" He was one of those guys you never knew if he was serious or not. He would mess with your head all day long.

Hi, This is going to sound like a really dumb question but I don’t really know a thing about sockets or stuff. I bought a 3/8 gear wrench socket drive for trying to replace my 02 sensor in my car. If I set it to OFF does that mean I’m loosening it or is it the opposite effect or something? Either way, thanks and cool video.
Thank you and yes off will rotate it to the left to loosen. You might have to spray some wd40 on the sensor threads to break it loose

Right now my HF flex head and composites are my go to ratchets. I am looking to invest into a Milwaukee fuel ratchet. I really like the feature's of those Gear Wrench flex heads. Tony how do those compare to HF flex heads? I just might have to upgrade to the Gear Wrench ratchets.
Erik Crawley I had the hf ones as well and they weren’t bad at all. I believe the gw was better but it depends on if you want the 120xp or 84t. One has locking and one is semi locking. Both are great though. I think you would enjoy them
I’ve used the HF’s for 2yrs now and have been quite surprised by how much I like them! For me, the extra 12 teeth in the gearwrench are not worth the price difference.
Just curious if you could swap the heads on those two gear wrench flex head 3/8 ratchets so you could have a 120xp that locks in position

Hey, I don't know a lot about tools, but I'm looking for a ratchet that has a lot of teeth as well as a very light "back stroke", is there such a thing? Max Torque isn't really much of a problem, I'd use a sturdier one for those. Price also not that important. I have no problem paying for quality, especially if it will likely survive me... :-D
What size 1/4? 1/2?? If you still haven’t got it get 120xp 1/4 gear wrench long handle you can find them 20-30 bucks amazon or hd online and I can tell you it just as good as the tool truck ones but if going like 1/2 look for a Bacho slim trust me on that not very popular in us it’s German but for about 40-60 bucks it’s got one the most compact 1/2 head I’ve seen plus it’s tool truck quality
You sound like FRM with that Milwaukee ratchet, but hey time is money even when your at home. I'm ratchet agnostic as long as the tooth count is high enough.

If you can get your hands on a set of Cornwell 100 tooth roto ratchets, I am sure you will change your mind on the roto ratchets. I was not impressed by the Gearwrench roto ratchets and I own nearly every single 120xp wrench and ratchet they sell. I found a set of 100 tooth roto ratchets that Matco sells, but turns out they are rebranded Cornwell ratchets. I freaking love em. They are my go to over my 9 Gearwrench 120xp ratchets and plethora of other ratchet brands I own.

Why don’t you like the quick release ratchets?
The Porkchop it’s not that I don’t like them I just don’t think it’s necessary. Without it you have a slimmer head design and I’ve never had any issues with sockets falling off so I guess I just prefer them without it

Lol they are definitely scratched. Maybe not the new Tekton ratchets or Carlyle ratchets bc they are brand new but I also have like 40 ratchets. Also tools aren't just for making money. They are for saving money as well. Trust me my tools at work don't look this good but that's just bc it's much harder work and a much faster pace. Where this is at home and it saves me money by allowing me to do all the work myself instead of paying someone else. So if I have the time which I do at home. I take very good care of my tools.
